Modern Girl's Guide to One-Night Stands

Rate this book
One night of passion.

After dumping her cheating fiancee, straight-laced Julia Hopkins decides to focus on herself for a change. A weekend getaway with a friend and one-night stand with a sexy stranger was exactly what she needed to kick off her new life. It was her chance to be someone else if only for a little while. But Julia's wild night comes back to haunt her when she discovers the identity of her sexy stranger.

One night he'd remember.

Simon Shelton never forgot the passionate wild cat he'd met by chance, despite not even knowing her last name. She'd made quite the impression. So he was surprised when the quiet college professor his sister tried to set him up with turned out to be his Julia. Because of their past and the way she'd left without a word, Simon thought it would be best for everyone involved to steer clear of his sister's friend. But keeping his hands off the irresistible redhead was easier said than done.

An ok read but not what I was expecting; I guess I wanted a whole lot more. Seems to drag at times and it feels as if as soon as Simon and Julia got their act together and decide to give their relationship a go, the story ended. However I did love the friendship between the characters and the banter they share. Even though the book wasn't a very exciting read for me, I'll still recommend.

I really enjoyed this book. I found it cute and refreshing. Plus it was a standalone (it's been a while since I've found one of those)!'

I loved that Julie didn't play the poor me card the entire time. She sucked it up and moved on and Simon was just the right amount of hotness.

Overall Opinion: This one took me a while to write my review. Instead of writing it right away I ended up leaving it for a couple hours before I came back to it. I already am not feeling like this is a really memorable story in just those few hours. It was a little less than "just ok". I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. The ending really cemented the "not loving it" side because I didn't get my closure.

Storyline: This is Julia and Simon's story. Julia has a nasty breakup with her fiancé. Her best friend and colleague, Megan, talks her into the perks of a one night stand. Julia meets Simon in a hotel bar and they share some witty banter and end up going to her hotel room and heating up the sheets. Julia is gone the next morning when Simon wakes up, and they did not share any contact information. Months later when Julia is joining Megan at her lake house in Michigan in the beginning of summer -- she runs into Simon. Both of them are shocked and avoid each other at first. After they can no longer resist the temptation, they give into their attraction again. They deal with having an on again off again fling, have some internet chatting sessions, come to terms that they might want more than a casual fling with each other, deal with demanding jobs, deal with a sick parent...and the couple eventually finds their HFN.

POV:This was 3rd person narrative with the focus alternating on Julia and Simon.

Overall Pace of Story: Ok. Some slow points and then a majorly abrupt ending.

H rating: 3 stars. Simon. I liked how he was tired of the society status climbers and being a player. Ok.

h rating: 2.5 stars. Julia. She was ok...kind of boring to tell the truth.

Sadness level: Low. No tissues necessary.

Heat level: Moderate. The couple have some steamy times...just ok too.

Descriptive sex: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM:

Cheating:

Possible Triggers:

Closure: Zero closure for the couple. They are still together, yes...but so many unanswered questions! I need my closure people! HFN if that.

An Awesome a Read!

I loved reading Modern Girl's Guide to One-Night Stands, all about Julia & Luke & Simon. Julia and Luke were engaged and set to get married in eight months, she just picked him up from a three month long business trip to London. He hadn't even had the common curtsies to look up while she talked to him thumbing thru his emails on the way to the Chicago office. The car pulled up, he stepped out and said I'll see you at 7pm for dinner. Later she got a text, crisis at work don't wait up! Julia was pissed, but eventually got over it, made dinner packed it up and went to his office. He wasn't in their but she found him literally screwing his personal assistance in the board room! She got back in the car and told the drive to take her back to his place, asked the driver to wait, and packed her stuff and left that looser forever! The author wrote a very interesting story, and the characters brought said story to life! Julia moved in with her BFF Megan for a while, and they went to Vegas and stayed at the Harrington her favorite place! While their Megan had to leave to go to a literary conference, and told Julia to stay and enjoy the room for one more nigh, since it was paid for. But the reason she should stay was to have a one night stand, let go and try something different, let go of your funk, and then get on with your life! Read this book it will make you laugh, cry, sigh, shake your he'd and cum up a storm! The book is about two people one who treasures the other and one who makes a fool of the other! Then it's about two different people who hook up and spend an entire night together, and in the morning, one has walked away! Read this book and find out what happens when you have, a One-night stand! I absolutely loved reading this book, I hope you do as well!

I went back and forth over what to rate this one. I enjoyed the love story between Simon and Julia even though sometimes I wanted to shake some sense into Julia. Simon was great. I liked him from the beginning and thought he and Julia were a good match. It was just getting her to see it that took some time.

While the story was solid, I did have some issues with the book. Megan, Simon's sister, was downright annoying at times. I get that siblings can be that way, but sometimes I wanted to tell her to grow up already.

There were also some editing issues. Not huge, mind you, but the book could use a good proofread. There were quite a few missing words and some double punctuation.

Overall, I liked the story. I was invested in the characters and wanted to see them get their HEA. Will I read something else from this author? Probably. Despite Megan being extremely annoying at times, I'd like to see how her book plays out.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a sexy contemporary romance with lots of family drama.

I am struggling with finding eloquent words to describe how much I loved this book!!!

Unlike the previous book, I can really see myself in this character's shoes. My two most serious relationships (a marriage and an engagement) have ended with my husband/fiancé cheating on me. The hurt, the trust issues, the feelings of abandonment and betrayal, the feelings of inadequacy - all of these things are captured perfectly by +Gina Drayer. As is the knowledge that the cheater would have cheated regardless.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a dark depressing read, but Gina does a fantastic job of making you feel what her characters are feeling. Unfortunately for me, I haven't met a sexy one night stand to fix my problem, but one night stands aren't really for me. I'm covered under the final tip with my Modern Girl Choices, by the way! :-)

Can it be cute and hot at the same time?

I think I like Julia and Simon better than Matt and Beth! I thought Simon was kind of a Jackass in the first book but boy did he turn out to be caring, seductive, and a bit of dominant that we love to read about. Julia is how every girl acts after a crappy break up...your scared, you don't want to get hurt again. We have all been there. But life is about taking chances and you have to take it...
Gina Drayer has not disappointed in either of these books and I'm hoping there is a book about Peter...maybe with Megan? ;)

Another Sexy Sensual Story

The male lead was super. A great mix of strength and emotion. Not to mention sexy with blonde curls. Loved it!

This was cute. It had a different feel to it than the first one but it still had it's fun, flirty and sexy moments too. it was nice to see little snippets of Matt and Beth from the first book too.

I like this series on audio, I think the narrator does a great job. I don't see where any of the other books in the series are on audio but I hope author does them because I would love to hear them too.

I'm really looking forward to Megan and Peter's book. I'm sure sparks on going to fly!

I'm not a romance reader. I've had friends recommend romance books for years, and I could just never quite get over the cheesy machismo that most had. But this book. Wow. Beautifully told story. Maybe it connected because it hit a little close to home for me in many ways, but I couldn't put it down.

I loved this story!

Wow, this was an amazing read. From the blurb and the reviews I thought it would be the typical one-night stand to love story, but it was not. I was pleasantly surprised and you will be too, one click now you will not be disappointed.

Once again anyone who knows me know I am a sucker for a quick, fun romance and that is what this book delivered. I like to be taken away for a little while while I am folding laundry, making dinner, driving around town and this book did the trick.

This was a 3.5 - 4 Star listen for me until the very end... when there wasn't an end. I definitely preferred this over the first story but I also like to have some idea of the conclusion.

DEFINITELY worth the read

Julia and Simon's story was definitely worth the read. I enjoy reading books like this. Julia has just ended her engagement to a undeserving ass hate who didn't deserve her. Her best friend is feisty and tries to get her to loosen up while away on a trip. Megan tells Julia the best medicine for moving on is to have another man beneath her. Things take a turn never expected. Life is never expected. Lol. GREAT READ

Eh

It just didn't do it for me. I kept waiting for a big wow but nothing really happened. Good book, has a few loopholes and needs a bit of proofreading.
