In the wake of an epic battle with the Parthian empire, Proconsul Crassus's Roman army faces a crisis the likes of which Rome has never known. Centurion Rufinius, one of the few surviving officers, must ensure safe passage for his army and himself.
Facing turncoats within the ranks and temptation from a mysterious beauty promised to the king of a distant empire, Rufinius must fight for his life and for love. In cold-blooded slavers' pits and on bended knee before foreign generals, Rufinius will do anything to renew his men's faith in themselves.
Tested from within and without, Rufinius must learn to lead his men at a time when there is no best option. The first battle that must be fought is one of wills. And on the outcome will hinge the fate of empires.
Hiya, I'm a fiction author and I live in Sydney, Australia. I guess my best-known work is the series featuring Vin Cooper, a special agent in the United States Air Force OSI.
I have published eleven novels, which most recently includes the seventh novel in the Cooper series, the highly controversial KINGDOM COME.
I've recently discovered the joys of Substack. Come and take a look at davidrollins@substack.com where I'm also serializing BLOOD & EMPIRE, the sequel to FIELD OF MARS.
With the cover nicely decheesified, the adventures of Roman soldiers continue in the second volume of this trilogy. Defeated in the battle, taken as slaves, they now have an option of winning their own freedom by forming an small mercenary army and fighting in a war of foreign nations in the land of the rising sun. Pretty compelling reading for fans of ancient history. Wouldn't do as a stand alone really, reading in order is recommended.
Following the death of their leader the surviving Roman legions are placed in captivity and become slaves and marched off to be be sold. Thing are not going well for their captor and his world his changed when he visits the king. The consequences are another turn of fate for the Roman legions.
A good quick read that is enjoyable and different from so many other toga novels as it doesn't contain mountains of italicised Latin words. I'm really enjoying the story.
