I originally came across this book on TikTok, and the visuals immediately pulled me in. The aesthetic was what made me want to read it, so I went in expecting that same atmosphere to carry through the story. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like the aesthetic matched the actual story.

My biggest struggle was the relationship between Dread and Miriam. I never really felt the chemistry or emotional connection between them, so the romance didn’t have the impact I was hoping for. I wanted to feel that tension and pull between them, but it just wasn’t there.

The story also didn’t flow well for me. The writing often felt choppy, which made it difficult to stay fully immersed. There were also a few descriptions and terms that felt a little too contemporary for the world the story creates, and that occasionally took me out of the atmosphere.

I really wanted to love this one because the concept and visuals initially drew me in, but the execution just didn’t come together for me the way I hoped it would.

That being said, I absolutely loved the author’s enthusiasm in her posts. She seems genuinely excited about her world and her characters, and honestly, I think she’s adorable. Even though this particular book didn’t fully work for me, I’m still committed to the overall story and won’t give up on the series just yet.

ARC Review: I received an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Dread and Miriam had me from the tension alone. This is enemies-to-lovers with great banter, jealousy, denial, and a man who will continue calling a woman his “friend” while making it painfully obvious to everyone except himself that he is completely gone for her. Dread’s jealousy toward Amos genuinely cracked me up.

Miriam was probably one of my favorite parts of the book. She’s quirky, fun, and able to go toe-to-toe with Dread in their banter. I also really enjoyed watching Dread struggle with his attraction to her. His internal battle of why am I feeling this way about this woman? was so much fun.

My biggest issue was that I wanted MORE of that stage.

Dread fell hard very quickly, and I didn’t feel like there was enough buildup between attraction and deeper feelings. The chemistry was absolutely there, but I wanted more time for them to banter, resist each other, and gradually fall in love. Even when we finally got the spicy/“I love you” payoff, I wanted the scene to slow down and linger a little longer.

I felt similarly about the worldbuilding. The writing itself was easy to read, but I wanted more lore and background much earlier. For me, the world didn’t really start feeling developed until around the 69% mark. Once those pieces started coming together, I became much more interested in the larger world; I just wish I’d had that context from the beginning.

Also, the subtle Harry Potter references in some of the character names? Such a fun little touch.

Overall, I had a really good time with this one. The characters and their chemistry kept me invested, the ending landed for me, and I’m genuinely looking forward to book two. I just wanted the story to give both the romance and the worldbuilding a little more room to breathe.

If you love enemies-to-lovers, banter, jealousy, “she’s JUST my friend” levels of denial, and fantasy romance, this one is worth checking out.

ARC REVIEW:

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was initially drawn to this book (like other ARC readers) from the “dramione” type aesthetics. And it does deliver in that regard. We’ve got a broody Draco/Kylo Ren archetype with a sunshine x grumpy couple.

I like that author has fun ideas for her world in an original setting!

However…

The pacing was really off for me. Things happen really fast and it makes the mmc and fmc relationship feel a little arbitrary and lacking in connection/chemistry.

I felt like I needed more world building to understand the whole thing. 3/4 into the book and I literally couldn’t tell you about the kingdoms except there was dark and light and maybe the dark kingdoms don’t have fire? Do they have no light at all? Like is it electricity or magic? Idk that really threw me off tbh. Or that they don’t have the color pink in Dread’s kingdom?

One thing that maybe would have helped is that the writing was very “tell” rather than “show”. It made scenes fall flat when I could tell the author wanted them to be impactful.

I want to thank the author for the opportunity to read in advance and I hope she continues writing!

So I’m currently typing this before I fly due to the fact that I almost done with “He Who Fears the Light” (I think 50 pages?). I will try my best to include quotes that I absolutely adore and names/ places as best as possible with having limited access to my kindle.
This is an advanced reader review

Let’s dive into this!

Quote that has me a chokehold and should peak your interest in reading this book-
He kisses me like a man who is starving

Overall—
Right now, I can’t keep this book down and I’m already thinking of rereading it. The pacing is amazing for it being only roughly 230 pages. The plot is such a steady pace in which it feels unhurried and you can see the chemistry build between Dread and Miriam. It feels like a natural building of trust between the characters while they each struggle with what has been handed to them by others. Both characters have their reasoning as to why they act. Miriam being a breath of kindness in a cruel kingdom while Dread struggles to please his father yet trying to forge his own path. During this whole book, it felt like Harry Potter and Star Wars had a child while keeping a sprinkle of magic.

Plot—
When I first started reading, it was interesting the sharp divide of what is allowed within the kingdom but the stark contrast between neighboring kingdoms that harbor the same darkness.
Miriam’s kingdom, Ire, was ruled under strict rules, it still allowed for warmth and love to occur between its people. It was a just dark kingdom in which the princess, Elowyn, had treated her like an actual sister instead of a servant while the king was never cruel to his family nor his people beyond what was needed to enforce.
For Dread’s Kingdom, Vantros, it is a completely different story since it ruled by an iron grip of a cruel king, Mordaine. His thirst for power is what causes the union between Dread and Miriam (a false Ire princess) to occur due to him wanting to kill any resistance for lightbringers.
Now you may be asking— what is a lightbringer? Great question, it is someone that brings relief to a kingdom and shines a light into the darkness (sorry but I’m not giving away all the spoilers). It is a central point of the story due to King Mordaines power thirst trip and having the ultimate control over his subjects. His control gives the same impression as an abusive partner trapping a person in which they think it’s the only way they will receive love when it’s not.

Characters—
Miriam
She’s is the personification of “glass is half full” and golden retriever energy wrapped up in one. She goes out of her way to know the staff of Vantros and wishes for the union between her and Dread to succeed while helping the kingdom thrive when they take over. Absolutely love her. Totally gem and deserves forehead kisses.

“Hope that even when you lived in darkness, and it was comfortable, you never had to be content. You could find the joy to coexist.”

Prince Dread
Oh sweet cinnamon bun. 100% damaged Kylo Ren and Malfoy needing to uphold his family’s legacy. He has some noticeable mental disorders which I love considering what he has undergone by the hands of his father. The struggle of him deciding to make Miriam happy and making his father proud. The way this man YEARNS is an understatement considering it’s equal to the same yearning of Kylo is towards Rey. *chefs kiss*

“I hunger for her the way a dying man thirsts for water, yet every moment spent near her feels dangerous.”

King Mordaine
I will say this as kindly as possible- he will be the only reason why public executions of political figures need to EXIST.

Dramione girlies, I fear this one may be for us. 👀

Dread??? Sir. The INNER TURMOIL. The suffering. The way the King treats him??? Absolutely heartbreaking. I just wanted to wrap him in a blanket and tell him everything was going to be okay. 😭

And Miriam is just LIGHT. ✨ Her curiosity, her bravery, her determination—I loved her so much. She has that perfect “I’m going to keep asking questions even when everyone tells me to stop” energy, and watching her navigate Dread was SO GOOD.

The dynamic between these two had me INVESTED. Give me the tortured, emotionally damaged man and the brave woman who sees more in him than everyone else does and apparently I will eat it up every single time. 😂

I really enjoyed this book, and that ending?! Excuse me??? I NEED THE NEXT BOOK IMMEDIATELY.

Dramione fans who love a little darkness, yearning, morally complicated characters, and a heroine who isn't afraid to poke the bear… add this to your TBR. 🖤✨

He Who Fears the Light by R.E. Wells

⭐⭐⭐⭐

Closed-door romance isn’t typically what I gravitate toward, but He Who Fears the Light reminded me that intimacy can be conveyed in so many ways beyond what’s on the page.

If you’re someone who looks for spice in your romance reads, do keep in mind that this is a closed-door story. That being said, the tension is absolutely still there, and I never felt that the story was lacking because of it.

What I appreciated most was the emotional depth of the characters. I genuinely felt for them. Their warmth, their sadness, and the tenderness woven throughout their interactions made it easy to become invested in their story.

I particularly appreciated Prince Dread’s characterization and the incorporation of OCD into his story. As someone who could personally relate to that aspect of his character, it was refreshing to encounter representation that I don’t often see explored in fantasy or romantasy. My one wish was that we’d gotten to see just a touch more of his compulsions on the page, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how he continues to navigate and work through them in the next book.

And perhaps it’s just the Dramione reader in me, but there were some very subtle Dramione vibes woven into Miriam and Dread’s dynamic that helped me bond with them even faster. That’s certainly not to say you need to be familiar with Dramione to fall in love with these two, but for those of us who know, it was a lovely little bonus.

Ultimately, there’s something particularly beautiful about a romance that can make you feel the connection between two people without needing to show you everything. R.E. Wells has given us a story with heart, and I’m looking forward to returning to this world.

Thank you to the author for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I couldn't put this book down! The plot held my attention, there were twists I didn't see coming, and I finished with about a million questions. The mystery surrounding the world and its history kept me intrigued. I'm already begging for book two.

Dread was easily my favorite character. He's such a tortured soul, and his story was genuinely heartbreaking at times. I loved watching the beginnings of his character growth. Miriam was genuinely kind with a healthy side serving of sarcasm. Their banter! Loved it!

The romance is enemies-to-lovers and definitely a SLOOOOOOOW burn, which I really enjoyed. I would've liked the enemies stage to last a little longer, but the transition still felt believable. There was plenty of tension and chemistry, but their relationship still has so much room to deepen as the series continues. I'm here for it.

There were a few things that kept this at 4 stars for me. The book was such an easy read and flowed really well, but it took the better part of the book to get the full picture of the worldbuilding and lore. Once it started coming together, though, I wanted more of it.

I also wanted a little more time to connect the dots leading up to some of the bigger realizations. Sometimes the characters seemed to reach an answer before I felt like I had enough pieces to get there with them. There were also a few dialogue lines that felt a little choppy.

But none of that stopped me from flying through the book. The characters kept me invested, the mystery kept me asking questions, and I NEED more Dread.

Bring on book two!

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I had the opportunity to be an ARC reader for this book. Thanks to R.E. Wells, I got to peak into Prince Dread and Miriam's world a little early.

I read it in 4 days because I didn't want to rush through it, but it can easily be a day's read if you have the time.
It is written with the POV bouncing between the two main characters - Dread and Miriam. There's definitely some pros and cons in this style of writing.

Yes, it is a slow burn, but it also felt rushed. Right when I thought there was going to be a moment where we would get to see another layer of their relationship opening up, it felt rushed. Not ever book needs to be 500+ pages, but these characters deserve their day in the sun.

Jealousy? Miscommunication? Of course it's lightly dusted in there. I wish there was more nods towards those interactions in the POV of the opposite character to see how they felt about those moments, but I think there is still time.

The banter? I giggled almost every time. Dread was most definitely not prepared for Miriam! And you just know he liked it- every single time. Those moments were not cut short or rushed, and they kept me on edge to see what happened next.

I know this is the first book of this series. Which is good, cause I have so many questions. There are a lot of opening to keep the story going- especially that very last scene. It's just not fair to end a book like that..

I received this as an ARC read, but these are my personal opinions. For me, this book is a 2.5 star read and I do want to thank the author for sending me a copy of this.

I want to start with the positives. I really like the story that's being told here. It's different from other stories that are written to excess. It felt fresh and exciting in that way and I do really love the plot twist. It's creatively told and I liked the dual POV so we got insight into both characters' feelings. I will say I do struggle sometimes when stories are written in first-person present tense, however, and I feel like it's a tricky POV to write so I commend the author for choosing that style. It was also a quick read and I managed to knock it out in a few short days (I would have been able to read it in a couple hours if I had the dedicated time without work and life getting in the way).

There are some great tropes in the book: enemies to lovers, grumpy sunshine, slow burn, arranged marriage. All things I love to read. I also really liked how there was a shared love of reading between Dread (MMC) and Miriam (FMC).

Some of the struggles I had are with the pacing and the structure of sentences. I felt like a lot of the sentences felt surface level and I wanted deeper thoughts. I yearned to feel a stronger connection to the characters and I found that not quite where I would like it to be. I also felt like I needed more world-building earlier in the story. We get some later on, but I felt like I had so many questions about the world itself that I still don't know the answer to. Perhaps, that's something that the author plans to address in subsequent books in the series, but it felt a little like I was thrust into the deep end not knowing how to swim and I needed the guidance of world building to show me how.

I also struggled to connect with the Miriam. She felt too trusting and naïve and it made it hard for me to feel things for her. I do feel like she had chemistry with Dread, but I needed more of it. And more build up of their relationship. It felt like both of them fell quite quickly and I needed more organic reasons why they were falling. In the beginning of the book, I really didn't like Dread. I do like that his character grew as the story progressed, though. I like how the author touched on OCD and showed signs of Dread having OCD, but I needed more of that. As someone with OCD, I wanted to connect more with that and it felt like it was thrown in without depth.

Thank you to BookFunnel And RE Wells for this ARC copy in exchange for my honest review.

3.75 ⭐️

I have been really excited for this release.

This book is a fast paced slow burn (if that makes sense). The book moves quickly, which is great for me because I am prone to get bored with long drawn out books.

There was some scenes I wish we would have stayed in and explored a little bit longer, but I can respect why we didn’t.

MMC-broody and conflicted
FMC-sweet and kind

The MMC’s internal struggles and self doubts are relatable; to read how he struggles on how to react and feel about someone who is genuinely kind.

I am trying hard not to give too much away.

I say if you are into internal struggles, magic, and fantasy but don’t want three 1,000+ page books to get to the point this is the book for you. This is the first book so there is another, but the ending of this is satisfying.

I will be buying the physical copy and I will continue on to the next book. There are a lot of questions going into the next book. I’m excited to see what happens.

I received this book from the author for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This book is a fantasy story that gives you the redemption story you wanted for Draco Malfoy or even Kylo Ren. I feel like the title of this book draws you in and really makes you feel how the main character, Dread is feeling/battling. This story embodies romance, intrigue, self realization, and yearning.
My heart just broke with all that Dread had to deal with because of his Father. I loved the character of Miriam as she figures out her place and how she is supposed to live in a world of no light, even though her heart yearns for it.
This book had me making guesses of who was a light bearer and what will that person be able to do. There were many a chapter that I couldn't stop at the chapters end because I HAD to know what was going to happen next. I am very excited to hear that there will be a book 2.

ARC REVIEW ★ ★ ★½

Big thanks to the author for sending me an advanced reading copy in return for an honest review! All opinions are my own.

I enjoyed reading this book and following the evolution of Miriam and Dread’s relationship. The alternating POVs give you a better understanding of both characters. Prince Dread‘s monologues give you a clear picture of the inner turmoil he feels between his responsibilities to his Father and who he wants to be. I like that they are foils of one another and bring out a version of each other that no one else gets to see. It almost had that Beauty and the Beast feel. The only real downside was that the worldbuilding felt a little lacking. I feel that I would have been more invested in the characters had there been a little more detail with the backstory and more interactions with each other because when they were together the banter was chefs kiss! All in all I enjoyed reading and watching their story unfold and look forward to the next book!!

Firstly, let me say thank you to this author for my arc copy!

This is like a dark fantasy romcom. The topics get heavy and hard, but I also found myself laughing hysterically throughout the book. Then I would be teary eyed bc my heart broke for these characters. I loved this book. I read it easily in one setting. I really loved our fmc, she is so different from many of the female main characters. She was very soft, sweet, and silly but I loved it so much. My heart broke for the mmc. Everytime he would panic or have an episode, my heart just broke for him. I loved his and the fmc's dynamic. I love how through everything she truly saw him. Ahhhhhh its so good and now I need book 2.
Also this is not a spicy read, but not one time did I feel like I missed it bc the tension and yearning was just so good.
Pick this book up! It releases 10/31/26

ARC Review: I received an advance copy of this book. Thank you R.E. Wells for trusting me with it.

I saw it on tiktok and the promotion caught my attention immediately! I'm a DRAMIONE fan and this book gave the vibes so I had to read it and read it I did.
From the moment I started it to the moment I finished it I couldn't put it down, the slow pace romance, the plot twist (i was shocked for all of them, definitely not what I was expecting!!!) Had me on a chockhold.
I was a bit disappointed with the final because it felt to soon, I wish the book was longer (you will understand once you read it)
Overall I gave it 4.5-5 star rating with my only issue being the end 🤪 that cliffhanger had me swiping the page on my kindle trying to get more 😅.

Again thank you so much R.E. Wells for allowing me to be one of the first ones to read it... and ofc my physical copy has been pre-order.

Omg this book I couldn't put it down. The love story, The plot, the twists Was absolutely chefs kiss. This was my first arc read and I'm so glad it was cause way to start it off with a BANG. I thought this was a good pace but THE ENDING What a cliffhanger. OH MY GOODNESS I was screaming when in ended in my car and my husband thought I was crazy cause I didn't want it to end especially at that point. Also seeing the struggles and growth of the two characters was beautiful. I'm a mom who has sensory issues and so don't my three kids and seeing Dread go through what he did it was nice to be able to relate to a character. ?(even though I'm a woman hehehe) This book is a must read especially if you love dramione coded books. like myself. WELL DONE CANT WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK HURRY HEHE

Wonderful story with such an interesting magical world!
Story moves a little fast at times but at the same time Dread and Miriam have such a push/pull relationship at first that their slow burn is just everything. The mistrust from Dread as he fights his inner demons and voice of his father from everything good and light that Miriam has to offer! My heart just breaks for him so. Many. Times.
It’s a near end scene so I can’t say much but there’s a moment with Dread that is my absolute favorite because of how it’s described, all I’m saying.
I think the only thing stopping me from rating this higher is I wish for more backstory/world building with specifically the magic. Maybe we’re saving it for book two which I totally get then! But it just felt a little lacking here.

This book was a beautiful story that was a visual representation between light and dark, goodness and evil. Dread, the MMC, wasn’t your typical prince, physically strong or with skill in battle. His strength lies in his inner man, even if it’s hidden by being raised under the malicious hand of his father. Miriam, our FMC, is the type of person you meet and you’re immediately drawn to. She has an inner light that shines even in a kingdom that’s inner darkness has become manifest. The book ends pretty much right after they get married and ends with a small cliff hanger. There is no language and the wedding night was implied but not detailed at the end.

ARC Review: Overall I enjoyed the story line to He Who Fears the Light!
I liked Dread and Miriam’s banter.
Also was cool to see the little Harry Potter references! Those little moments were fun to come across, especially as a Harry Potter fan.
I really liked having both POVs too. Getting to experience the story from both Dread and Miriam’s perspectives made me enjoy their characters even more.
My only thing was that I wanted a little more backstory. I found myself wanting to know more about the Kingdoms and characters. There were times I thought there could have been a little more detail.
I had a fun time reading He Who Fears the Light, and I’m glad I got the chance to read it early!

I absolutely LOVE Dread and Miriam. Their chemistry is amazing, and their character ARCs are perfect! And the world building?? So good! The struggle between dark and light is so poignant and beautifully written. The whole premise of the story was creative and new and exciting. All I have to say is, there better be a sequel because THAT ENDING. I still have so many questions!! Does Dread find out Miriam's secret? Do they defeat his father? Do they save the villagers??? I need to know!!!

I loved this! Give me a tortured MMC and a fiery FMC and I’m all in! I truly loved how quickly this book moves- you don’t get bogged down in too much detail or build up- it’s right to the action! This was truly such an easy read and kept me engaged the whole time. I felt like I knew where the plot was going, but it surprised me in such a good way. As a Dramione fan, I felt like this had just enough of my two fav lovers, but didn’t feel overdone or predictable. Can’t wait for book 2! THANK YOU TO THE AUTHOR FOR THE ARC!

The story just didn’t quite work for me. I had a hard time getting into the flow because the writing often felt a little bit all over the place, which made it difficult for me to stay fully immersed. There were also a few descriptions and terms that felt a bit too modern for the world the story was trying to create, and those moments pulled me out of the world building.
I really wanted to love this one because the concept and visuals immediately caught my attention. There is so much potential here!

Jealous, possessive, and completely undone—Prince Dread and the princess he was never supposed to want. 🖤

This is a story about a cold, brooding prince who wants nothing to do with his new betrothed and a princess determined to bring her warmth and light into his dark world—and a kingdom that desperately needs it.

The twists kept me turning the pages, and I really enjoyed the enchanting magic system and the dark, corrupted history of the kingdom. There’s plenty of mystery, secrets, and tension woven throughout the story.

Enemy to lovers are my favorite and there’s just something special about Prince Dread. His character development was 🤌🏼. There was no spice in this book but the tension and build up was fantastic.

ARC review: Absolutely LOVED the book, it kept me on my toes and wanting to read more. I loved the way the fmc held her own in every situation she was put in. The inner monologue of the mmc had me rooting so hard for him. The way these characters are so opposite yet fit so well together is crazy. I am typically not a girl that enjoys a slow burn but this was done so well that it didn't even bother me! I am SO ready for book 2.

First book I've read by R.E Wells and I highly recommend. I loved everything about this book.

enemies to lovers
arranged marriage (but he falls first under denial🤣)
grief representation
anxiety representation

It pulls you in from the first chapter making you want to know what's going to happen for both Miriam and Dread. The ending makes me think there's room for this to be the start of a series and I could see myself enjoying hearing more of this story.

First and foremost, I want to be honest in my review as I promised to be for being an ARC reader! I really wanted to love this book because the premise immediately caught my attention. The idea behind He Who Fears the Light is genuinely so interesting, and I still think there’s a lot of potential in the concept! Unfortunately, the execution just didn’t quite work for me personally.

I struggled to really connect with the writing and found it a little choppy and inconsistent at times, which made it difficult for me to get fully immersed in the story. I think I would have enjoyed it a bit more with more world building and a deeper backstory, as I was left wanting to understand more about the world and the characters in general.

I also found some of the relationships and trust between the characters developed a little too quickly for me. Even though slow burn was the vibe between Dread and Miriam, it still felt a little rushed in the scope of slow burn. I wanted more time to see those connections build naturally, especially when it came to the romantasy elements of the book.

That being said, I really don’t think the story is the issue here because, honestly, I love the idea behind this book. It just didn’t grab me in the way I’d hoped and unfortunately I found my attention drifting quite a bit while reading.

I know this is an ARC, so these are just my personal thoughts and experiences with the book, and I’m sure there will be readers who connect with it much more than I did. 💕 I’m glad I gave it a chance, but ultimately this one just wasn’t for me. Overall rating for me: ⭐️⭐️.5/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
