I literally love every other book by Roxie Ray, I recommend everyone read all of her books! But this one felt so AI written with the dialogue it was barely readable.

This book wants to be a shifter romance, and technically it is. But mostly, it’s a book about people who need therapy, and then go to therapy. It gets a +1 for the banter, comedic timing, and therapy, but overall the story isn’t much to be excited about. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone, but I do think everyone should go to therapy at least once in their lives. And once again, I should know better than to fall for the kindle unlimited book ads I get in my social media feeds.

This book is not romantasy or paranormal or even a shifter book. She could have taken the little parts about Liam being a shifter out and it wouldn't have changed the story at all. It is a cozy romance with each of them having personal issues and needing therapy.

This one is really difficult for me to review because I genuinely liked the premise, but unfortunately, the execution just didn’t work for me.
We follow Zoey Yates, a woman who has spent most of her life being the person who fixes everything and takes care of everyone else. She keeps people at a distance, struggles with trust, and definitely doesn’t know what to do when someone starts showing up for her. Enter Liam the wolf shifter she somehow lists as her emergency contact after knowing him for approximately six hours. When the hospital actually calls him, he immediately shows up, and what follows is supposed to be the beginning of Zoey learning that maybe she doesn’t have to handle everything alone.
I actually really liked that setup. I also appreciated that both Zoey and Liam had their own mental-health struggles and that Liam respected Zoey’s boundaries instead of constantly pushing her. Unfortunately, I kept waiting for the story to really go somewhere, and for me, it never quite did.
At over ten hours, this felt much longer than it needed to be. There was a lot of filler, the pacing was extremely slow, and I struggled to figure out what the main storyline or conflict was supposed to be. I honestly think this could have been a much tighter five- or six-hour audiobook without losing anything important.
I also went into this expecting the wolf-shifter aspect to play a much bigger role. Liam being a shifter felt almost incidental to the story. He only shifts a couple of times, and the paranormal element never became as important to the plot or romance as I expected based on the title and premise. I kept waiting for more of that world to develop, but it just never happened.
This was my first book by Roxie Ray, and overall it felt very bland and slow for my personal reading taste. I had a hard time staying focused, and there were several points where I considered DNFing.
What ultimately kept me going was the audiobook narration. Sadie Provost and Jack Thompson did a fantastic job and made the listening experience much more enjoyable. If I had been physically reading this instead of listening, I honestly don’t think I would have finished it.
There were pieces here that I liked—the premise, Liam showing up for Zoey, the mental-health representation, and the idea of someone who has always been the caretaker finally having someone care for her—but I needed a stronger plot, significantly tighter pacing, and a lot more wolf in my wolf-shifter romance.

I only finished this book because I started it and I wanted it for my book challenge number. The sex was awful. The relationship was weird. If I would like to be in therapy, I would just make an appointment with my therapist… plus who wants a relationship like that? It honestly was ew.

My Emergency Contact is a Wolf Shifter was a fantastically written, character-driven story. It's about making connections, asserting boundaries, and figuring out the needs of others as well as yourself. It just so happens that the MMC is a wolf shifter. Liam was amazing. He showed up when he was needed, understood boundaries, got consent, and handled everything with care. I enjoyed his calming presence. Now Zoey, on the other hand, was very much a black cat. Heck, she was even cranky with herself. Zoey is very capable but has her walls up because life has taught her the consequences of not doing so. It was interesting seeing Liam get past her defenses. This was a fast-burn; however, it was the romance that drew me in. Liam is doing little things for her. Zoey sees Liam clearly and lets him know it was okay. Ugh, it was everything.
This book had some of the best banter. It just flowed between all the characters. That includes Bobbi and Markie, who were fabulous. Bobbi is an eleven-year-old who lays down truth like it was wisdom, and Markie, Zoey's foul-mouthed parrot, who says the darndest things and has excellent timing. I enjoyed the humor. I have no idea how this book is rated so high. There were many words, yet nothing really happened in the book. I wanted to DNF at 55% and kept going. I shouldn’t have.

Dnf at 30%.
I'm 30% in and there have been exactly 2 lines about this male love interest being a shifter. Once early on where the FMC and her work friends are swimming in a lake and the guy, a complete stranger, casually just mentions that he is a shifter only to receive zero reaction (as if that's just a completely normal thing) when there has literally been no indication whatsoever that this world is anything outside of our existing human world as readers. And the second time was while he is cleaning her bathroom in her new apartment after being called on to care for her over a potential head injury, and she just references out of nowhere that she "thought [he was] a wolf, [n]ot a domestic cleaning service."
I'm sorry what? After the first reference, I gave it a chance thinking ok, we'll get somewhere and he'll spill the details about this secret supernatural life he leads after she's in too deep to want to run for her life, but nope. Apparently this is just a thing in this world that warranted no explanation to the boring mere mortals engaging the tale.
Honestly, with the amount of times the author uses "shifter," "shifting," "shifted," or some variation of the root word at hand, you would think there might actually be some significance to its inclusion in the title. And maybe there is but I'm not invested enough to find out.
Also, there were a lot of editing issues. Lines repeating, grammatical issues etc.

I tried once again with a Roxie Ray story, and unfortunately, I just don't think this author is for me. While the story concept is always intriguing enough to draw me in, I find the execution hard to follow and often disjointed.
Goodreads does state that Roxie Ray is a pen name for a group of friends. Unfortunately, it really does feel like multiple people wrote this. The flow is off, and the repetition is a bit too frequent.
I also found that all the characters, including the bird in this installment, felt a bit too similar, with barely any difference between their personalities as they all spoke and acted the same. To really get into a book fully, I need characters to feel distinct, I need their differences and similarities to strengthen the bonds between them. Unfortunately, it felt more as if the "fated mate" aspect was driving the romance rather than the relationship itself.
While I applaud the use, once again, of neurodivergent characters, mental health, and therapy, I was disappointed by how one session of therapy seemed to solve everyone's issues immediately. I would have liked to see a more realistic progression.
I'm not sure if I'll be reading another one in the future. While the titles always draw me in, my feelings each time have been pretty similar. It may be time for me to step back and allow others to discover these books through fans of the author's writing.

I listened to the audio and I felt it was pretty long winded at times with repetitive things there are a lot of chapters that don't move the story forward much if at all and I don't think that the book needed to be this long a lot could be edited out without losing anything crucial for the story.
While the story was cute and cozy, I didn't really feel much was happening most of the time and I thought of giving up on it a few times while listening because it just wasn't holding my interest I didn't see what the point was for Liam to be a shifter for the story other than for the parrot to shout "DOG" at him constantly.
There isn't much world development on the shifter side and it was really just a real world romance meets a counseling session . I did appreciate the mental health representation and I felt it was necessary for Zoey since she was a doormat to her mom.
I was looking forward to listening to this one but unfortunately for me it just fell flat. The narrators Sadie Provost & Jack Thompson were awesome and I don't know if I would have finished this one without them.

She meets Liam at the small mountain resort and their chemistry is electric. She is injured and Liam takes her to the nursing station for treatment. They end up soending the rest of evening together and then Zoey goes on her way. She is moving to a nearby town with her larger than life parrot Markie and his big personality, and meets the neighbor’s child Bobbi.
During the visit, Zoey takes a spill from the ladder, uhhhh ohhhh and ends up in the hospital, and Liam, who is listed as her emergency contact while she was at the resort, is called and he goes to the medical center for her.
The romantic, charming and sweet comedic aspects of the story are in full bloom as the two figure out what they want and how it works since neither have been in relationships, due to the collateral damage of their early childhoods.
There is a wonderful support system and community that supports them both as they learn about love and life together, working through mistakes and flourishing as a couple, and is an absolutely worthwhile read

I just realized why this author is such a hit or miss for me. It's three authors sharing one pen name.
In this case, I wanted to like it so much. But, when you have people in a hot tub with just their underwear on one moment and then in a bed in the next, all I can think about is how the bed is getting damp and y'all haven't dried off and are your feet filthy after walking down a path without putting on shoes and you're going to get everything so gross... and not on a good way.
This woman has bright blue-dyed hair and she's blithely in a hot tub with it down!? Also, didn't she just sprain her ankle? What do you mean she straddles him? What do you mean she immediately goes in a hot tub without icing it first? What do you mean he traces her silky skin and sticks his hand up her bra? She's soaking wet (once again, not in a good way) so she isn't silky smooth. She's wet and nothing is smooth over wet skin. What do you mean you didn't put on shoes or pickup your clothes from beside the hot tub?
I can't with this.

The dialogue and some of the lines just read really flat and blunt. They didn't really have any personality in their dialogue, and some of them felt the same. The fact that Liam was a shifter was only really mentioned a few times and wasn't even that important.

Once I opened this, I didn’t want to stop reading. I found Liam and Zoey entirely relatable and I thoroughly enjoyed their story.
I was celebrating every win and worrying with every stumble. Just, all the feels with this one. I loved it, another great read.

I’ve read a few of the authors other books, and they’re pretty reliable. Short, easy reads. A bit cozy. Usually funny with some spice, and this one is the same. MMC definitely would’ve been completely forgiven right away and excuses would’ve been made for him in other similar books, so it was nice to see him accept the need to change.

Knocked it out of the park
Just like 'Accurate by Accident' (which i also love), this book has neurodivergent characters. This book deals with that in a more quiet way, but also in more depth. The characters are attractive and appealing. Is like to meet them in real life.

Hitting home
This book hit home so hard with the mother and my husband. It had me in all the feels. I literally picked the book by it's cover and it did not disappoint. Beautiful with great great. And Bobbie is the best

3 stars. It was just ok.. not super in depth story. The OCD of the characters was kind of annoying. It wasn’t really a shifter story.
