For as long as the town could remember, it told the same story about the woods beyond Bennett Manor. Something lived out there, past the tree line. Legend said it took who it wanted, when it wanted, and it never gave them back. It's the kind of story told to children to keep them from wandering too far... the kind of story some adults never stopped believing.
Zara Bennett swore she'd never set foot in Bennett Manor again. But her husband is gone, her son needs somewhere safe to land, and the only path forward leads straight back to her childhood home—back to everything she thought she'd escaped.
Yet, for as unnerving as that old house and those woods are, they share the land with a far more infamous terror. Deep in the trees dwells a legend the locals still refuse to speak of. Not because of some silly name you're supposed to say three times in front of a mirror at night, but because of her history—what she had done, and what she might do again.
That's why they're called stories. And most stories call her witch.
Me and My Shadows is a debut psychological horror novel about the stories a town tells, the ones we outgrow, and the ones the woods never give back.
The Kelly Twins are Kevin and Michael Kelly, identical twins from the South Side of Chicago who have been making things together since before either of them could write. They grew up on horror—the paperbacks passed back and forth, the movies they weren't old enough to watch, the stories they told each other in the dark and made worse on purpose. Four years ago, they started building one of their own.
Kevin lives with his wife and daughter. Michael lives with his wife and six children. Between them, they're never short of material.
Wooooow!! What a debut novel this was!!! This is one of my favourite ARCs I have read so far. It had absolutely everything.
It was psychological, creepy..the scene was set! It was eery as hell. Got me jumpy sitting on the couch, looking behind my shoulder.
The story was well thought out, characters well developed over both timelines. It was a slow burn without being boring at all and everything unfolded at the end beautifully. There was still twist after twist happening at 98% into the book! MAD!! I did not expect anything that unfolded. Absolutely speechless!!
The characters are realistic and their struggles with past mistakes and expectations feel genuinely authentic. Written in a simple yet impactful style, this book offers a powerful look at personal growth and resilience. It is highly recommended for anyone looking for a strong, character-driven story.
Okay, first of all- I don’t typically read horror or thrillers, but this book had me on the edge of my seat the entire time! I loved the dual timeline and definitely got a bit of a Haunting of Hill House vibe from it.
SO. MANY. TWISTS. Every time I thought I had things figured out, there was another surprise. By the end, I was genuinely shocked I did NOT see that ending coming.
I came across The Kelly Twins on TikTok & instantly loved their vibe as a spooky girl so I HAD to read Me and My Shadows when it came out. This story was exactly what I was looking for from start to finish. I absolutely appreciate the twists & turns throughout this book that can be quite difficult to nail. These guys made me love as well as despise the characters. There were a few moments where I thought I had something figured out only to be led down a different path or to learn something new about a character that had my opinion of them changing.
I admit that I read through this in about 5 days. That's actually a good thing! If it takes me a long time to read something, it's usually because I put it down or I simply do not enjoy the storyline, but not with Me and My Shadows. I LOVE how this was not a slow and boring read (having AuDHD, it kept me engaged throughout). The only thing that I felt that I didn't like was finding the trigger warnings at the end of the story. I think that this can be done in a way at the beginning of the book so as not to spoil anything whatsoever for the reader. Doing so gives a reader the option to continue with a story based on their comfort level. All in all, I cannot wait to see where The Kelly Twins take their readers next. Bravo fellas!
I received an ARC copy and dove straight in. This book reads as though it could be a movie, and honestly I love when a story is written this way. It makes it easier to follow along and picture the scenes unfolding with clarity.
Me and My Shadows follows a family cursed by local legends of a witch trapped and lurking in the forest. This book is genuinely SCARY. Several times I had to sit up and lock in because a shock factor would drop at any moment. I was able to predict the smallest sliver of the growing plot twist. The rest smacked me in the face and the ending is DIABOLICAL! And yet it wrapped up perfectly with no loose ends.
I been on the hunt this spooky season for a book to be actually scary. This did the job. I am so surprisingly taken aback by this book and I’m so glad I had the chance to read it. THIS IS A MUST READ 👏
Me and My Shadows by The Kelly Twins is a must read psychological thriller!
Following Zara’s story as she moves back to the Manor where she grew up comes with more than one twist! Hearing about local legends is one thing, but Zara is actually living them. The story had me questioning what was real and what wasn’t, and I couldn’t wait to see how everything would unfold.
If you love psychological thrillers, creepy legends, and plenty of twists and turns, add this one to your TBR!
