My reaction to Cougar: description

My reaction to Libbie: description

SMALL SPOILERS ALERT

This was the first "steamy" romance novel I've ever read, and I was a bit disappointed that the moment that the entire book (aka the passionate love scene between Libbie and Cougar) led up to a) was nearly at the end of the story and b) ended with bad feelings between Libbie and Cougar. And the bad feelings happened, or more so the hurt Libbie caused Cougar at any point in time in the book, was because of one thing: Her insufferable pride and stubborn heart. In Francine River's romance novel Redeeming Love, the stubbornness of Angel made sense. She was bitter because she was embittered by life and the horrible things that happened to her growing up as a child prostitute. Angel knew what it was like to be used by men for pleasure, and she became a shell of a woman, never revealing the brokenness inside of her as she hid behind stubbornness, anger, and bitterness. Sadly, that wasn't Elizabeth Winters at all. She was stubborn because of her horrible personality, hating the idea of being tied down to a man in a time where there really wasn't anything else for a woman. This caused for countless moments where you really felt annoyed with her, but you have to applaud Georgiana Gentry for writing Cougar to be just as stubborn and willful as Libbie so that the two strong forces can clash, instead of one completely tearing the other down the entire time. And Cougar had several moments of reason and clarity when he could have made Libbie's stubborn moments worse, but instead said nothing or said little.

Aside from Libbie's horribleness, I loved all the plot threads that we all KNEW would connect, and we were excited to see how they connected. They were done expertly well and were very satisfying once they played out. The plot twists, while hinted at and therefore not totally shocking, were still very cool to see. There were a few moments that I was upset that the whole idea of rape was downplayed and molded into something that wasn't a big deal, but a later happenstance brought the proper emotions towards such a horror, so it didn't turn out all bad.

So, in essence, this book was very enjoyable. I loved the history brought to life, giving us the sad details of the Battle of Cibecue Creek, the animosity between natives and non-natives, and the fact that people hired by the US government to send supplies to Native American reservations and tribal groups were crooked men who ended up selling the supplies to third parties, leaving the Native Americans without the provisions promised by the government that proclaimed peace towards the tribal groups. The irksome character that is Libbie was balanced by the equally strong-willed and passionate Cougar, and the story (while tedious in some parts because of Libbie) was exciting and lovely at the same time. While I would recommend Redeeming Love over this book any day, I loved the passion between Libbie and Cougar, but I loved the heart and spirit of Cougar all the more.

TW: suicide

Oh my gosh. This book. The romance. The setting. The tropes. *chefs kiss* 😚 A white women who goes out to “Indian’s land” to visit her fiancée and has a love at first sight moment with an Indian named Cougar even though she is betrothed. He gives her his necklace (a tribal Apache Tears necklace) as a symbol of his undeying love and as protection for her on her way back home BUT her fiancé finds out and tells Cougar she threw it away and made fun of him. Soooo Cougar is out for revenge on the two faced women thinking she betrayed and rejected him. BUT THENNNNN a year later she comes back to see Cougar and ….. HE KIDNAPS HER OUT OF ANGER! 😱

YALL. It was so good.

A bodice riper romance… literally….. two times.

We got to see major character development with our heroine. A rich 1st class white women embraces Indian culture. A strong, loyal hero who would do anything for her. UGGGHH!!!

❤️What I love: the author did her research, incorporated bits of history, visited Indian reservations, and consulted people from the Indian culture. Yes yes yes sis!!!

❌What I disliked: THE BOOK NEEDED TO BE LONGER!!! Another 100 pages to wrap it up would have been perfect. I have more questions and I needed the book to end wrapped up with a bow. 🎁

📖Tropes: forbidden romance, western, enemies to lovers, bodice ripper, travel, love at first sight, kidnapping, body guard, culture differences

Libbie Winters is a rich girl orphaned by the death of her parents and left in the guardianship of one of her Mother's friends who has abused and misspent her inheritance. Her guardian works to wed Libbie to a well known rich family through a military man named Phillip Harrington, a self-absorbed jerk who is looking forward to taking over Libbie's fortune. Libbie's guardian sets up a trip to Arizona to meet him at the fort where he is stationed and she instead becomes fascinated with Apache scout nicknamed 'Cougar'. Libbie eventually finds herself in the midst of the Apache rebellion as a captive who comes to find more connection in the tribe than she has ever found before. Torn between two very different cultures she is forced to examine what she really needs in life to be happy . As usual this author does not disappoint with her level of historical research of the Apache rebellion, part romance novel part history book which I enjoyed.

Trigger warning for rape. I don’t know why we ever thought it was OK to write romances where the hero rapes the heroine.

I've read a few of these books from the Panorama series and find them all good to read. This is no exception. He's a half breed Apache while she is a spoilt little rich girl. He meets her and ends up giving her his Apache Tears necklace to protect from any Apache up rising. Thinking he has been betrayed by her, when the chance arises, he captures her and uses her as ransom to gain money for much needed supplies for the Apache. Carefully laid plans end up going astray when love is involved.

A few twists to the storyline kept me guessing and the love scenes were fairly steamy. It was overall a good story.
