Bezabh was never meant to see the world's pleasure. Maybe the things we do in life are predestined by an ever-silent conceiver of our being. Maybe Bezabh should have stopped listening to his heart and bow down for the ways of the People. Maybe Bezabh should, with everyone else, call Gudu Kasa a crazy freak and not like Seble believe he is a man of truth. Love Until The Grave. Thanks to Hadis Alemayehu
This is a true masterpiece. The best part of it; it was inscribed and given to me from someone very special. Luna.
BEFORE READING THE BOOK, I ADVISE YOU TO GET THE NARRATION OF THE BOOK BY WEGAYEHU NIGATU AND READ WHILE LISTENING TO IT.
As a kid, I remember listening to the narration by Wegayehu Nigatu on Sunday nights. He brought the characters to life. I recently got a hard copy of the book this summer and reading it was a joy, savoring every single page. The dialect is a bit difficult to comprehend at first.
The book mainly tells a love story in feudal Ethiopia between a young man, Bezabih and a daughter of a Commander of the Vanguard, Seblewongel. They fall in love and keep it a secret which eventually comes out and leads to a series of unfortunate events; events which i fear will be spoilers to the book.
Overall, it is a classic Ethiopian literature, a novel so eloquently written. An absolute must read!

I remember when I was little(8 or 9) listening to the audiobook on the radio with my mom and talking about the characters, and I remember thinking this book is overrated. I recently read the book (age 21) and I found it better than I remembered. I believe your age plays a significant role in much you enjoy or appreciate the book. Now I don't have a word to describe how amazing this book is. Hadis Alemayehu is generous. this is my second favourite Amahric book. Oromay by Bealu Girma being my number one.
One of the best book ever written. I have cried for a whole day after finishing this book. I don't want to spoil it for anyone but if you are interested in romance and tragedy while learning about the way people used to live, how families arrange marriage for thier kids how lower class people were treated in the older days of Ethiopia( still do in some parts of the country) this is the best book ever. I suggest it for everyone.
To think of this treasure as a love story only would be a terrible misrepresentation. It has an incredible love story, yet this is also a novel of freedom, slavery, feudalism, religion, society .. etc.
- Bezabih - በህግ አግብቶ ለመኖር - wants to be free from የስዕለት ልጅነት - Seble wants to be free as far as የባርያ ልጅ መሆንን አብዝታ እስትናፍቅ ድረስ - from ትብትብ traditionalism that cost her life, enforced by parents who didn’t give a rip about her well-being—only about their vanity. - ባላገሮች want to be free from ጨቋኝ feudalism.
One of my favorite parts is when የባላገር አመፅ raises up against ፊታውራሪ መሽሻ. You will find an exceptional conversations between them. ልጄን በዛብህ 'እርስዎ' ሳይል አወራ ብለው የሚበሳጩትን ፊታውራሪ የባላገር ወኪሎች were whipping them with the hard to swallow truth. Great stuff.
There is a lot to say about this fiction.
You don't want to miss የሀብትሽን ጨዋታ You don't want to miss የበዛብህን ገራምነት You don't want to miss የአበጀ በለውን ጀግንነት You don't want to miss የጉዱ ካሳን ሂስ You don't want to miss የምስኪን ነፍሶችን ፍቅር You don't want to miss lots of things!
