If you're reading this you probably know where this comic run comes from and that this book takes place in the (old/discontinued/”Legends”) Star Wars history... But I'll go ahead and fill you in a little bit.

This was originally published by Dark Horse Comics under the series title of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but since Disney bought Star Wars, and Disney owns Marvel, they decided to republish Dark Horse's Star Wars comics under their new Epic Collection series. Also, Knights of the Old Republic comes from the video game(s) released a long time ago... in a galaxy far, far away -- okay, come on! I had to!

Anyway. I should say this edition has been beautifully reprinted and, even if you have the old Omnibus edition or the individual volumes, is well worth the purchase.

Without further ado: the content.

The story itself is entertaining, pretty straightforward, and well executed. It was probably just me, but it did take me a while to get into it (about the first six issues out of the 19). The story mixes in some elements of good political thriller and Jason Bourne-esque chase scenes… with Jedi. So yeah, those are some awesome high points right there.

I was also impressed with how much it could feel like Star Wars even when it’s supposed to take place about 1,000 years before Episode I. The characters develop well and are reminiscent of certain characters in the Original Trilogy and some remind me of characters in The Clone Wars TV series.

Zayne Carrick, the main character, is a young (mildly inept) Jedi who is framed for murdering his fellow Padawan classmates on the night of their graduation. I think he is best described as Luke Skywalker in his personality and slowness to understand the Force. But he, like Luke, can also have his moments of awesomeness. Again, the similarity to Jason Bourne pops up in him occasionally too.

However, I wasn’t big on the way the book ended. After some more exciting parts, it felt like it all ground to a halt. And in the worst way possible: with “romance”… and not any good kind either. It was just random, contrived, and felt like it was just another way for the artist to have some fun putting the main female character in some very skimpy clothes. It was maybe just a bit worse than Leia at Jabba’s Palace, but not as bad as some of the Clone Wars DH comics. But it just felt so wrong for the character and story in general (plus it’s just plain uncomfortable). Heck, the characters actually point out the characters clothing. I don’t know. That just doesn’t seem like Star Wars to me. (Even though it looks like it’s been a habit of Dark Horse Star Wars artists to put women in the skimpiest clothing possible.)

All in all, even with some of its shortcomings, the book is well worth the read and I personally look forward to completing the series.

It is finally done. A comic that I have been dying to read for ages, but I have waited for the rest of the KOTOR comic run to be reprinted so I could afford it.
This review is just a quick summary, because I have already done more detailed reviews for the individual story arcs collected here.

CROSSROADS(5 stars): A great sampling for just a one-shot, and a rousing start for a very long-running series. It does a great job intoducing Zayne Carrick, the protagonist. He is incompetent as a jedi, but his determination to do the right thing makes him endearing. (My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...)

COMMENCEMENT(5 stars): One of the greatest star wars comic book story arcs I have ever read. The story is thrilling, the characters (especially Zayne) are fantastic, and the artwork is great. It also has two of the greatest moments I have ever seen in star wars comics. (My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...)

FLASHPOINT (4 stars): It doesn't quite live up to the impossible standards set up by Commencement, but it was still a great continuation. The worldbuilding is interesting in the "Flashpoint" story arc, and "Reunion" is a fantastically done change of pace that develops Zayne further and does a good job setting up future threads. (My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...)

DAYS OF FEAR, NIGHTS OF ANGER (4.5 stars): A very strong, character focused pair of story arcs that also works excellently as a capper for this collection. The established characters are developed very well, and we are introduced to some interesting and/or entertaining new faces. There's some great connective worldbuilding at play as well. (My Review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...)

THE CONCLUSION: Final rating is 5 stars.
John Jackson Miller's Knights of the Old Republic has consistently impressed me. Both because this series is so kriffing good and that cliffhanger at the end of volume 3, I am eager to keep going. This has everything a star wars fan would want from a comic, particularly those who are fans of the Old Republic Era and/or the KOTOR games. It has a gripping story filled with interesting twists and turns. The characters are wonderful- entertaining, relateable, complex, and often a mix of all three. The writing is a brilliant blend of nail-biting tension and hilarious comedy, but feels perfectly like star wars with the sum of its parts. The worldbuilding is very well executed- Miller has established a setting that not only is well connected to Tales of the Jedi and the KOTOR games, but stands out quite well on its own.
I implore you- PLEASE read this series. This is some of the best material to ever come out of Star Wars, and I pray to the force that these comics continue to be as amazing as they have been for the first 18 issues. Despite his shortcomings, the force is strong with Zayne Carrick, and even stronger with his story.

I just don't like this style of comic. I should love it, Its Star Wars for god sake but man, I just didn't enjoy it. the stories fell flat to me. Perhaps I'm in a reading slump, too. I haven't enjoyed the last few comics I've tried to delve into.

John Jackson Miller and I don’t have the best history. Yes Knight Errant was ok and was at least readable with a decent storyline, but Lost Tribe of the Sith, his collection of interrelated stories chronicling the rise of the Sith empire, was a huge bore and total waste of time. I had fears that, even though Miller is known as one of the greats when it comes to the Old Republic storylines, Old Republic, vol.1 would be more of the same convoluted storylines and characters that I hated.

This is one of those times I’m glad I was wrong. OR, vol.1 is great and is easily one of the best graphic novel storylines and collections since the entirety of the original Legacy arc by Jon Ostrander.

I like this first volume of the OR because it’s just a lot of fun. The overlapping stories of Zayne Carrick trying to clear his name and the Arkanians attempt to rule the galaxy, all set amongst the backdrop of the Mandelorian War, made for enjoyable reading and a plot that actually made sense, and, better yet, actually worked in the grand scheme of ancient Star Wars lore. The artistry was also some of the best since Duursema’s in the previously mentioned Legacy. Though there were 3 or 4 different artists throughout the entirety of this collection, they all flowed together fairly seamlessly and only added more depth and color to Miller’s original plot.

I’m pleasantly surprised just how much I enjoyed this first collection of the Old Republic. Onward to vol. 2 I guess.

This is hands-down the best collection of Star Wars sequential art that I have read. I enjoy the setting (the years leading up to the Knights of the Old Republic video game), the story, the characters and the world building.

Zayne Carrick is a good protagonist - a Jedi padawan who's nowehere near as perfect (and therefore dull) as most Jedi, and who doesn't fall into the category of "edgy-flirtation-with-the Dark-Side-of-the-Force" hero either.

And his sidekick (although he would certainly not describe himself that way), the Snivvian con-man and huckster Marn Hierogryph, is one of my favourite characters in all the Star Wars Legends continuity. He's so delightfully self-centred and optimistic about making a buck, it is impossible not to enjoy him whenever he's on the page.

Add to that a couple of Arkanians, Jarael and "Camper", a renegade Mandalorian, and a loadlifter droid with PTSD, and you have a thoroughly interesting crew to follow.

And the villains are great, too. Mandalorian invaders, clumsy Ithorian bounty hunters, oligarchs, Republic Admirals, and most importantly of all, self-righteous Jedi prophets.

All the elements of these stories fit together splendidly, and John Jackson Miller's plotting and character work is perfectly complemented by the lovely artwork, particularly when it's Brian Ching, who gets Gryph's expressions absolutely spot on in every frame.

I definitely going to order The Old Republic, Vol. 2, because I have to know how the story continues.

Recommended for people who love Star Wars. It's as simple as that.

I just don't like this style of comic. I should love it, Its Star Wars for god sake but man, I just didnt dig it. I have never liked this style of comics its always been dry to me and I always start thinking a fiction book would of done this better. My imagination is better than the art and thus makes the whole thing seem less. Add to the fact that its a "Legends" book so a lot of the details are off, especially with the mandalorians and it just didn't grip me.

Things I liked: Gryph, Star Wars, a few of the action sequences
Things I didnt: Just about everything else. This would of been better served as a cartoon or an actual book.

I have always been a Star Wars fan and I love how these graphic novels and books give us so much more of that Galaxy Far Far Away. Zayne’s journey has proven to be one bad situation after another but I am super excited to read what happens next!! A must read for fans of Star Wars!

May the 4th be with you all!

This One is a real star wars deep dive, so caveat eMptor to casual fans.

these stories are set one Millenia before the battle of YAvin, so have Limited relevance to the movie plots, But it has many of the bEst elements of the univeRse, including an inTriguing hero, zayne, who is not exactly force aDept, but seems to be A coNfluence poInt for major Events in the force. there are aLso loveable droIdS, goofy sidekicks And faLliblE ship, and a mechanic capable of coaxinG said ship through an asteroid belt. thE story certaiNly takes its time to Develop, and this is fair enough in terms of being a major timeshift from the well know events to come, but i would have been sated if the book had finished after the major battle scene and issue 16, rather than tacking on another new story plot. there are also a fair few moments played for laughs, which build up the bonhomie between these new comrades, like Gryff, but probably could have used a good editor- normally even in a trade, you get a feel for what would be a well paced single issue, but i was a bit lost with the pace, and it wasn't often because i was hanging on to my hat with dazzling story threads.

the major battle is satisfying and the overall feel for what miller set up is positive, but the length and pace (like this review probably!) meant this is no rave review.
not sure if I'll stick with the old republic, but bound to keep poking around the new and recently re-released star wars stuff from marvel.

In a distant part of the galaxy wages a war between the Republic and the Mandalorians. The Jedi are divided about what to do, but for Zayne Carrick that is a far off concern. He is not the most promising Jedi candidate, in fact, disaster seems to dog his heels wherever he goes. Then the most heinous of betrayals occurs; the Jedi Masters kill their Padawan students, and frame the only witness, Zayne. Now he's on the run, determined to get justice while avoiding capture and the larger war. In his haste to escape Taris, he sweeps up several others, the criminal Marn, and two Arkanian offshoots, Jarael and Camper, who have their own enemies to hide from. The story and characters develop at a steady pace, even with all the crazy circumstances. The visual aspects of the action are fairly restrained, but this comics strength is in the character art, there are a lot of raw expressions. Prophecy is at the root of this story, and by trying to avoid this disaster, they may have made it self-fulfilling.

This is Epic Collection was great. It maintained the same characters and central story, which some of the others do not. The art work and style also stayed the same excellent quality.

Story wise there is a lot to love, despite having a Jedi main character these stories read a lot closer to a narrative centered around a smuggler. If you are looking for a story with great characters, some nice action, smuggling, but that does not connect to the movies in anyway, look no further.

My biggest complaint is that it ends on a cliff hanger, and the next one is not out yet! The Jedi rules also seem drastically different from that set in previous SW fiction I have read, but oh well.

UPDATE: Started the next volume and loving it. Would recommend this to any Star Wars fans!

I liked the way it started, as a kind of sci-fi murder mystery. . . but it went all over the place after that and never actually tied up any of the interesting threads from the first 2-3 issues. Artwork was good, but not consistent.

This was a decent volume and I kinda enjoyed it though it will take time to get used to this writing style and a lot of planets and concepts being thrown at you and sometimes it feels a lot but its still fun to read and I love the character of Zayne and how its all set up and what it is leading to.. also read the tales of the jedi collections before it as they reference Exar Kun and the sith war incidents a lot and I love it from a completionist pov.

So yeah a lot of plot points being set up here and there but it looks like its building to a great thing with Zayne and the mandalorians attacking and the secret of all the characters and what it will result in ultimately and I am excited to continue reading this!!

John Jackson Millers Knights of the Old Republic comic series is one of the best Star Wars comics ever. This series really benefited from having only one writer. Many of the Star Wars comics are miniseries of only 6 or so issues, and the ongoing series don't always run for that long. But this series ran for a good while, and this allowed it to pull off epic, long story arcs in a way that makes you feel like your watching a tv series, and I really like that and wish other comics would do that.

The characterization here is probably some of the if not the best I've read in star wars comics so far. Practically none of these characters appear in much material outside of this comic series, yet by the time the whole things over they felt to me just as if not more iconic. This story also often veers away from and subverts the typical tropes that Star Wars often ends up in. Zayne Carrick, the protagonist, is maybe the one star wars protagonist who is not a force prodigy. In fact, he's downright bad at using the force! I really like his casual and down to earth demeanor and sense of humor as well. I also like how this series subverts the typical Jedi apprentice turns evil and fights master storyline we've seen over and over again.

Also, like, I actually liked the romance in this series. And the love triangle. Which is really really bizarre of me to say because I typically can't stand that stuff.

This is definitely one of the best prequels I've read, in that it barely feels like a prequel. Its its own story. I hadn't even played the game when I read this but it still felt fully fledged to me.

While reading this series, I felt like John Jackson Miller was really thinking about the world, how it works, what would be an interesting story to tell. The worldbuilding is really good. This series overall just has a higher level of quality then most star wars comics, with a sense of a really strong attention to detail.

So why four stars for this particular volume? Well, while the first two arcs are amazing (especially Commencement, which has the structure of a really good pilot episode), the quality declines over the course of the volume. I remember the beginning issues of the Adasca storyline as being especially slow. Overall though, great start to a great series.

Knights of the Old Republic was a fifty-issue comic series produced by Dark Horse comics from 2006 through 2010. It follows the adventures of Zayne Carrick, a Jedi Padawan framed for murder by his masters, in his quest to clear his name. Along with Legacy comic series, this is one of the best Star Wars comic series ever.

This collection, published by Marvel after they gained the Star Wars comics license, contains issues #0-#18. This launches the story and is highly engaging with (except for a few issues) excellent art. Set at the height of the Mandalorian Wars, this is an epic tale with a simple fugative story at its heart. While it's an excellent story that be comsumed on its own, if the reader has played the two Knight's of the Old Republic (KOTOR) games, there are tons of easter eggs what with the Mandalorian Wars being a major part of the games' backstory. There are major appearances by Revan, Malak, Admiral Karath and Carth Onasi (from the first game) and minor appearances of the Jedi Council from the second game. There are plenty of other references too, but I won't list them out here.

This collection includes the various Holo-net News Reports that were part of the original issues but weren't included in the Dark Horse Trade Paperbacks. Also, on a second read-through after completing the series, it's fun seeing the clues leading up to big reveals in both the first finale (Vindication) and the second finale (Demon). Thus, excellent story and excellent art make for a really fun story to immerse oneself in.

I've been wanting to read this series for nearly 2 decades.... finally got to it and I'm super happy I did. I'm a huge fan of the KOTOR games so getting to see characters like Carth Onasi was great. Obviously any Star Wars fan wants to read about the Mandalorian Wars and see 3600 year old "Mandies" in action.

The art of the Mandalorians, such as Rohlan, Mandalore the Ultimate, the shock troopers and the Neo-crusaders is awesome. The art of the series overall is amazing and does make you long for those Dark Horse days in Star Wars again.

The story of the series overall was decent but a little bit boring and slow to start, until we got to the later arcs. My favourite arc is definitely the one that this volume ends during, which is the Adascorp story. It was really cool how they brought in the Exogorths... where else in the EU did we really ever get anything with them?

One thing I've really been waiting for is if we get to see Revan and Malak... I thought I remembered reading back in the day that they're in this quite a bit. I have volume 2 ready to go so we'll see!

FYI these take a while to go through since there's a lot of dialogue and 19 comics per volume.

This has been on my list forever but has been perpetually out of print despite the change in publisher.. Finally found some decently priced copies of the first two volumes, and I couldn't be happier. I haven't delved into the world of Star Wars in a while, but KotOR has always been one of my favorite entries. This book really recaptures some of what made it great, while also entirely being its own thing.

We enter the story through a young Padawan, whose relationship with the force is so thin, even he doesn't believe he'll be knighted in the upcoming ceremony. When he gets there a few minutes late, all his peers are dead at the hands of their Jedi masters, who had a vision that they'll bring on the return of the Sith.

This sends us on a journey full of political intrigue and conspiracies, hardships and new found friendships. It really expands on the game's lore, putting the Mandalorian War front and center. We visit a few different planets. Our characters are a bunch of misfits, all running from the law for different reasons, who stick together when it matters most.

It's got a bit of the Firefly vibe. Outlaw space opera with a pretty light tone. I'm digging it a whole lot

I give it a 7.5/10.

I'm a big fan of the video game Knights of the Old Republic, so I always wanted to read these series. And I was delighted to find many of the game characters here too.

But I had a rough time with it. This is the story narrating the adventures of Zayne Carrick, a young annoying padawan who gets framed by his master so he decides to set the record straight. Avoiding the use of violence, during one of the most violent eras in this universe. This makes the story a little too annoying and unrealistic.

Zayne Carrick reminded me of Yorick from Vaughan's Y The Last Man. Two annoying young men. Except Vaughan's stories and dialogues are so interesting they keep you turning pages all the time.

But don't get me wrong, the story has some really good elements. Some characters are great, the plot on itself is interesting, there are many mysteries to solve.

Recommended to all Star Wars fans, specially Old Republic ones.

I've never been overly familiar with this time period of star wars history. And a story following an annoying teen jedi that I have no real investment in does nothing to get me excited about this comic.

Sure the artwork is good, but the storyline does nothing to grab me, and with this series being so long and knowing it's one of the last legends comics I have left on my list, this is the first time I havent felt like I want to go back to keep reading.

I'm gonna finish the remaining volumes, even if I just skim it to get to Legacy my last series, but I have no enthusiasm for this series so far

To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this book. A classmate of mine recommended any of the Marvel Star Wars collections so when I saw this at the library, I decided to check it out. I'm really glad I did. I enjoyed it quite a bit. The story and characters are engaging. While the plot has a lot of things going on, it is written in a way that makes it pretty easy to keep track of everything.

I'm not a comic book or graphic novel aficionado so I don't know how this compares to "the state of the art" for comic books and graphic novels but it was certainly entertaining enough for me. I plan to continue reading more of the books in this series.

I really like the plot of this series, and the ending of the first issue got me immediately hooked. Zayne Carrick is a fun character, and the backdrop of the Old Republic era with the Mandalorian conflict going on is cool. The story itself is a bit choppier than I'd like, however, and the actual dialogue in the comic is hit or miss. In particular, there are a lot of jokes that didn't land for me, and a lot text blurbs that felt unnecessary. All that being said, the plot is a ton of fun and is very interesting, so I would recommend this to any fan of Star Wars and especially those that like the Old Republic.

John Jackson Miller and a slew of WONDERFUL artists have created a wonderful young Jedi and his unexpected group of misfit friends who I am growing to love with every page. Not to mention cameos (and longer guest appearances) from KotOR legends like a favorite of mine Carth Onasi who grows to be an even bigger favorite after the second to last arc in this book (Days of Fear). Highly recommended to Old Republic era fans or just Star Wars Legends fans in general, this is great stuff and I am so ready to start volume 2!

My family has been watching The Mandelorian, and our resident Star Wars expert recommended this book as a background in understanding Mandelorian customs and history. It doesn’t do that, exactly; I’m thinking that the next volume might. Instead it’s a space noir about a kid wrongly accused of murder who has to find the truth while on the run from the killers. Fast-paced, clever, and fun to read until it starts getting bogged down in subplots toward the end. I might have to read the next volume because I’m likely to be quizzed…

As a fan of Star Wars: The Old Republic I picked this up on a whim when I spotted it a con, not expecting much from it - well, let's just say that I was pleasantly surprised! The story's quite gripping, full of subtle but compelling references to KOTOR lore, and features some genuinely exciting moments, though it loses some momentum towards the end of the volume. Still, I immediately ordered the other two volumes, because now I want to read them all!

I began sampling the old Dark Horse Star Wars comics once Marvel started rereleasing them in these Epic Collections. So far, The Old Republic has been my favorite. Partly because it is the vision of a single writer and story arc as opposed to disparate tales collected together, partly because it is removed from the Skywalker saga but still feels very much like Star Wars, and partly because it's just fun.

Set thousands of years before the movies and just a few years before the video game series of the same name, Knights of the Old Republic is a buddy-cop action-comedy set in the Star Wars universe. This first volume collects the first 18 issues containing several story-arcs that are super fun to binge-read. I highly recommend the series to anyone who loves the movies or the KOTOR video games.

The main plot is long and drawn out- that is both good and bad. Bad- because it is never resolved in this book, good because it imitates life. The problem is, I read these sort of books to "escape" life's dreariness, not to continue it. Good artwork, nice peripheral characters [actually better than the protagonist] and decent adherence to what we know of the Star Wars universe.
