Rate this book
Heartache. Betrayal. Forgiveness. Redemption... It's time to head back to Magdalena, New York, and spend a little time with the people we love to love and even a few we love to hate.A lot has happened since readers left town in A Family Winter!Bree Kinkaid is dealing with heartache and betrayal the only way she can—denial. Her friends can’t help her, she won’t listen to her parents, and she rejects offerings of support and sympathy from the town as she attempts to hold onto that magical life she wanted. But when a stranger shows up at Bree’s doorstep with information about her husband, she can’t pretend any longer. And in case you were wondering what happened to Gloria Blacksworth’s notebook, it’s still resting in Nate Desantro’s desk drawer…but not for long. Gloria might be dead, but the notebook continues to leak distrust and ill will into the community, and someone’s got to stop it! There might be only one person in town equipped for the job—any guesses? We’ve also got a new man in Magdalena, one badly in need of a second chance…Grant Richot sprinted through life, a boy wonder with talent, intelligence, confidence, and charm. He never doubted the world awaited him, just as he never doubted the right woman would come into his life—but only when he was ready for her. Anyone before that was simply preparation for the one.How wrong he was.Years and a tragedy later, Grant arrives in Maggie Finnegan’s hometown of Magdalena, New York—broken, uncertain, and searching for that second chance with the woman he cast aside. But Maggie’s no longer naïve and impressionable; she’s a confident, competent widow with a child, who has more at risk than another broken heart… For a richer “A Family Affair” reading experience, make sure to read Pulling Home, Book One of That Second Chance series. It is the prequel to A Family The Promise, where you’ll learn Grant Richot’s story. Big, dark secrets about his family are revealed in this book, but that doesn’t mean he knows about them…but it also doesn’t mean the reader can’t know, right?!See you in Magdalena!Truth in Lies Book A Family AffairBook A Family SpringBook A Family SummerBook A Family FallBook A Family Christmas, a novellaBook A Family WinterBook A Family The PromiseBook A Family The SecretBook A Family The WishBook A Family The GiftBook A Family The Weddings, a novellaBook A Family The Cabin, a novellaBook A Family The ReturnBook A Family The ChoiceBook A Family The ProposalBook A Family Bonus ScenesBook A Family The HomecomingBook A Family The A Family Affair Boxed Set (Books 1-3)and Meals From A Family Affair Cookbook

Mary Campisi is the author of over 40 emotion-packed novels that center around hope, redemption, and second chances.

Mary should have known she'd become a writer when at age thirteen she began changing the ending to all the books she read. It took several years and a number of jobs, including registered nurse, receptionist in a swanky hair salon, accounts payable clerk, and practice manager in an OB/GYN office, for her to rediscover writing. Enter a mouse-less computer, a floppy disk, and a dream large enough to fill a zip drive. The rest of the story lives on in every book she writes.

When she's not working on her craft or following the lives of five adult children, Mary's digging in the dirt with her flowers and herbs, cooking, reading, walking her rescue lab, Henry, or, on the perfect day, riding off into the sunset with her very own hero/husband on his Ultra Limited aka Harley.

A family Affair series is truly one I have enjoyed over the years. It is always great to see updates of past couples I have read about. Bree who we have met in previous books is dealing with a two loses, the sudden death of her husband Brody and finding out his betrayal in his marriage to her. So begins this story of Bree coping with the loss and shock of her husband and having to deal with the town knowing of his infidelities. We also get in this novel a second chance story. Maggie has been coping with the loss of her husband and raising their son. Unbeknownst to anyone her son William did not belong to her husband but her past love Grant who she met in college. Grant was studying to be a doctor and had no interest in being a parent. She left college and came home never to hear from him again until he shows up in Magdalena and find out she never miscarried. I always enjoy getting more than one storyline in my novel and this actually had a a little more than two. Would have loved an update of the characters because the epilogue was kind of short but since this series is now up to book#20 am quite sure there is more of a conclusion of some things that were brought up in this novel.

Wonderful

Grant Ricot has come to Magdalena for his second chance at love with the only woman who had ever truly had his heart. As always, a wrench has been thrown into the mix. The wrench being his sister...who also throws a wrench in another individuals life.

Gloria Blackwell is at her tricks from the grave yet again. And that notebook? Pop has agreed to read it and do damage control...or hopes to.

So there is much in store for the town of Mag and always some truth, lies, we option and redemption. But almost always forgiveness and love.

On to "Second Chances: The Way They Were" before book 8 in the Family Affair series.

I'm reading the boxed set, but am choosing to review the books individually.
I like how Mary has chosen to focus on the 'second string' characters for this set of books. I'm not sure exactly if I should be reading the original full series in-between or first or if it doesn't matter. Each book is fairly stand alone, with connections to previous characters. So far as I am beginning the third in the series, each is as enticing as the one before. I liked this particular story because of how the truth finds it's way out. I think this will be a recurring theme. They are somewhat 'soap operaish' however I find that highly enjoyable.

Anyone with a mother as obnoxious and without decent boundaries as Lorraine Finnegan is, who chooses to maintain a close relationship with her, is an idiot. I have too many good books waiting to waste time with this one.

Sorry, Ms. Campisi, I used to like your books but will not be reading more. You are writing about unsavory people as though their actions do not actually have negative life-altering consequences. Maybe you believe everything turns out okay in the end, but hanging out with bad people more often brings good people down than raises the bad ones. Good behavior is harder than bad and as water flows downhill, laziness usually beats effort.

Many aren’t surprised about some situations occurring, while a few are intensely upset that offenses happened as they did. The good thing is the optimism with goodwill to go onward with the values they continue to have.

My home away from home

This town that is featured in this book series is one I desperately long to live in. You probably won't find a place in reality where a whole town helps you shoulder your burdens and works toward a solution to a person's problems. This is what Magdalena is all about. Finding love, second chances and true friendship are common place. The characters are ones you truly care about and root for. Just like any town Magdalena has its "bad eggs" that like to cause trouble but, trouble is quickly overcome for eventual happy endings(which are my favorite kind). In this installment hard truths are faced(bree's cheating and now dead husband) and are resolved to be overcome and long lost love is found again. However there is another new person in town that could mean trouble for the newly happy couple when she threatens to reveal a secret from the past. There is trouble brewing in the form of gloria blacksworth's notebook that will be addressed in the next book which i can't wait to read. This one ends in a cliffhanger just like the last one. Mary Campisi you sly woman. As always I highly recommend reading this whole series.

OMG I loved this book like do all Mary Campisi's book, I just couldn't stop reading until I finished the book, before I knew I'd half the day had gone but what way to spend your day off back in Magdalena :)
I would recommend you read the AFA series and pulling home as mary has very cleverly brought characters together from these books/series.
This book answers so many unanswered questions but also leaves you hanging and wanting to know more, I love how mary has a way of making you look at your own life, believes and how you treat others, makes you think about how you would react in the same situation .
SO CAN'T WAIT for the next installment.

As with all of the books in this series, I truly enjoyed this story. The characters are weaving through the pages and the streets of Magdalena with a bit of mystery and the complications of life. I look forward to the next book in this series, and to unraveling the secrets of that nasty notebook!

I love the stories about the people of Magdalena. There's love, laughter, tears and the possibility of second chances. Pop Benito watches over all of the townspeople. Can't wait to see what happens with Miriam in the next one.

Interesting story about love lost and found. It gives insight into other characters like Bree, but not enough; hence, the four stars.
