The unputdownable feel-good romance from Portia MacIntosh, perfect for fans of Rosie Blake, Sophie Kinsella and Lindsey Kelk.It was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime…
In reality it was a business trip, prettied up as a romantic mini break, but the man behind the wheel was meant to be Candice Hart’s boss and (married but separated, I swear!) lover. Not Danny the new guy!
Not only is Candice faced with a new driver, but the office’s far too handsome hipster expects her to share the cramped space inside his “fully” restored VW Beetle, aka The Love Bug, and put up with his constant opinions about her life…
Before long she is tired of playing the ‘good girl’ and, with Danny’s help, is determined to finally show the world the real Candice Hart!
Don't miss this hilarious new novel from bestselling author of Bad Bridesmaid
Portia MacIntosh is the bestselling author of over 30 romantic comedy novels.
From disastrous dates to destination weddings, Portia’s romcoms are the perfect way to escape from day to day life, visiting sunny beaches in the summer and snowy villages at Christmas time. Whether it’s southern Italy or the Yorkshire coast, Portia’s stories are the holiday you’re craving, conveniently packed in between the pages.
Formerly a journalist, Portia has left the city, swapping the music biz for the moors, to live the (not so) quiet life with her husband and her dog in Yorkshire.
Every now and then I break out from my love of crime, horror and psychological thrillers to read a bit of chick-lit, or choc-lit, whatever you want to call it. For me, it is the ultimate reading palate cleanser. Nothing too heavy, nothing too dark. A bit of fluff.
Portia Macintosh is a great writer, I loved and laughed so hard at her book Bad Bridesmaids so was keen to read this when I saw it on NetGalley. It did not let me down. It was devoured in one sitting as very easy reading with a fun plot and characters you could not only relate to but really laugh at and with.
The basic story is this: young woman is sleeping with married boss for a year in secret, sexy new young guy joins IT department and won't stop making moves on young woman, young woman finds him annoying. Boss gets jealous. A secret is revealed and by pure circumstances beyond control said young woman ends up on a week long road trip with annoying (but gorgeous) IT guy.....let the fun begin!
It was just a brilliant read, lots of very down to earth funny moments that many women and men could relate to, real life mishaps and situations. I loved following the road trip and seeing what eventuated as they were thrown together in his banger of a car. Some of it was just hilarious, a lot was heart-warming and yes, I was cheering for certain outcomes in this one.
You will never look at getting a tattoo the same way again!
4 Paw Prints from Booklover Catlady, a lovely book, lots of fun and very easy to digest. Was not bored for a second. Loved the ending.

Candice has been having an affair with her married boss, Will. He has promised her a week long road trip (masquerading as a business trip), to sort out exactly what is happening between them. Will also seems to have a bit of a controlling streak and has slowly transformed Candice's personality into how he thinks a girl should act.
However the night before they are due to leave on their trip, Will pulls out but tells her to take someone else from work. Just to annoy him, she picks Danny, the new guy. This is the IT geek, who on his first day in this new job, asked Candice out on a date! She finds Danny oddly irritating but knows it will drive Will crazy!
And so Danny and Candice travel around the UK, in his car "The Love Bug" a marginally more modern version of "Herbie, the love bug". Danny has one aim for the week, and this is to break Candice's "Stepford wife" persona and to find true girl within her.
I loved every second of the road trip, it is full of laughs, embarrassing situations, dubious decisions, a small bit of food poisoning. Watching Candice slowly unravel into a much more rounded person is fantastic to see, but its Danny that really captured my heart and imagination. He is a cheeky Geordie chap, clearly a geek but with a body to die for. He was definitely a very enjoyable book boyfriend to make the acquaintance of.
Drive Me Crazy, I read on a Sunday afternoon thankfully, as I didn't want to put the book down at all. It was so enjoyable and was a pleasure to read. I can't believe this is the first book I have read of Portia's and makes me know I really should read at least the other that is lurking on my kindle!
Drive Me Crazy is a brilliantly fun story, that is incredibly entertaining, and highly enjoyable.
Thanks so much to Netgalley and Carina and Portia MacIntosh for this review copy. This was my honest opinion.
Guys, if "Drive Me Crazy" is still sitting on your kindle, un - read, then please read it asap! I can't believe what took me so long to start this novel, I'm truly angry with myself - this is a gorgeous, light, heart - warming read that makes you long for more from this author.
So. At the beginning I really only thought, what the hell...? Candice, are you for real? I truly couldn't encompass how a young, intelligent woman can let a man to boss her around so much, decide what she should wear, eat, say and how she should behave... I can understand affair, I truly can, even if I don't support it, but I absolutely can't bear women that are like mimosa, going and doing only this what their man tells them to. And let's be honest, Candice was like this. But! Oh, don't be mistaken, and have patience, because Candice is going to let her hair down (literally), and how...!
I am sure that drawing Candice like this was intended by the author. You know, you start to think no way, Candice, no way, and than the lovely Portia just bang, bang, bang, put Candice in totally new light, let Candice show her true colours and our feelings, like, rotate 360 degree. Because Candice is THE ultimate heroine and I just truly loved her.
And oh my, Dan. He annoyed me so much at the beginning, with his Peter Pan approach to everything, but I quickly changed my opinion about him. He might have not been visually my favourite hero, but inside he was absolutely hilarious, funny, smart and life and soul of the party - believe me, having Dan at the most dull party will change everything and make it the best one in your life! Who would think that this irritating IT geek will turn out into such a great guy with imagination - let's just shortly stop at and admire his beloved car, VW Beetle with the name "The Love Bug" :)
I'm not sure if we should compare Dan and Will, Candice's boss from hell, with no morals, no back - bone, with nothing in fact, who was as unpleasant as possible, really. Dan was so easy - going, down - to - earth, and in fact, after a while, I started to like his YOLO attitude, it is, in fact, true, right? And in contrast to Will, he encouraged Candice to throw off the shell she was carrying (ie. the old - modern clothes, the no - swearing, the tight plait) and start to be herself again.
I loved following Candice and Dan on their road trip and couldn't wait to see what more is going to happen and what kind of embarrassing situations they're going to put themselves into, or what kind of troubles they're going to cause, and what's going to happen in "The Love Bug" with only one door working. And I was not disappointed, as the situations were mostly hilarious, but also warm, full of emotions and even if they were so funny they felt also realistic, they were so easy to imagine.
Also kuddos to Portia for making her characters so lively and dynamic. I adored what she did with Candice, who turned out from this sad, fake girl sitting in a job that she hated into a woman of her own, a spontaneous, funny girl. It was a great joy to rediscover the real Candice. Dan was also such a surprise, you would expect a stiff IT guy and you got a sexy, gorgeous, smartass, funny man. The relationship between those two felt so honest and genuine, nothing was too forced, and they were not afraid to quarrel, fall out, offend and tell each other what they think.
Because I really like books set on the road, I liked the idea of this story. And methinks that with so many novels with similar plots (girl falling in love with her married boss, swallowing all the lies and almost changing her personality, then girl, because of the circumstances, being forced on a trip not with the boss but with the other guy) it isn't easy to write something as fresh, funny and unique as "Drive Me Crazy", because yes, the adventures of Candice and Dan were hilarious and I couldn't stop laughing. And I, for sure, won't look at tattoos the same way anymore! And also at pugs. Or big cheeseburgers. Really, believe me, when the fun started there was nothing stopping it, and I can't express how much I enjoyed this book. It is full of joy and laugh, embarrassing situations, and Portia MacIntosh has this incredible talent to change every situation, even the most usual and casual one, into a hilarious scene that had me in giggles. Who would thought that a normal food poisoning can be so entertaining? Or smuggling a dog in the hotel?
I am for sure going to dig around my kindle in the search for Portia's previous books, I really can't believe that I haven't read them yet! About time to make up for it! "Drive Me Crazy" had everything that I so like in my books - it had larger than life characters, original plot, a lot of fun but also some tenders moments, it was full of incredible one - liners and realistic banter between the characters. If you are looking to spend some entertaining hours in a great company, don't hesitate and read "Drive Me Crazy", I'm sure you're going to love it!

2.5-2.75 - Always was, and still am, a huge Macintosh-fan, so even when this wasn't quite to my liking, I still found just about enough LOL-s to make it worth reading. My "issue" with this book is mainly that I couldn't connect with the characters, much due to them being so young (or me stating to get old) and in very different places in life from me. Also, the main concepts (affair with a married boss + roadtrips + "enemies to lovers) made this feel very "recycled", lacking in originality and depth.
There are several genuinely comical scenes that made me smile and laugh. But except from those, I'm sorry to say, this wasn't really anything. There's not even that much of a story (beyond the m.c. realizing that she's most her true self) - and at times it felt like just a bunch of funny scenes looking for a book to fit into rather than a well thought out story with a plot that actually goes somewhere.
Light language that flows well and the writing style brings out the humor very well. But, again, it lacks an actual story, in my, unprofessional opinion. If I were a new reader in general, or to the rom-com genre in particular, I probably would have enjoyed it more. But having read a lot, this was all to recognizeable and predictable.
There's one thought that is currently bouncing about in my mind, and has been doing so since I finished reading Drive Me Crazy. and that is that Portia Macintosh's book just keep getting better. I've adored all of Portia's previous novels that I've had the pleasure of reading - Between a Rockstar and a Hard Place, Bad Bridesmaid - and so I just couldn't wait to get my hands on her latest Drive Me Crazy. I completely adore the cover for this book, it's so fresh and vivid, and with that skyline in the distance, it just threw up a ton of possibilities for Portia's brand new characters who, by the way, I LOVED!
What I adore about Portia's characters in her novels, specifically the heroine's, is that they are always sassy, smart and perhaps not at the beginning, but by the end of the book, stronger than they've ever been before. Portia introduces the reader to Candice Hart, and as soon as the novel opens and the story begins to unravel, it becomes immediately clear to the reader that Candice is in a rather uncomfortable position, physically and emotionally. Physically in the sense of being sprawled across Will, her boss's desk, and emotionally in the sense of being the 'other woman', which it becomes evident she is not happy about. Who can blame her? After an impromptu caller knocks at Will's office, Candice is shoved beneath the desk to be hidden from sight and this is how their relationship has been working for a long time now. Candice's internal thoughts, not forgetting her dialogue, emphasised to me just how sick of this fooling around she was becoming. It was obvious that what poor Candice wanted, more than anything, was to be able to walk with her head held high, with Will beside her, finally showing the world that they are an actual proper couple, rather than the dirty sneaking about that is truly beginning to grind her gears. I warmed to Candice's character immediately. I've never been in such a position myself but with Portia's brilliant prose, I was able to easily place myself with Candice's shoes and I couldn't blame her for wanting more. I mean, who on earth would want to be shoved ungracefully beneath a desk? It's hardly going to make you feel like a lady, is it? So, I was completely behind Candice's decisions from the beginning. I pretty much cared about her from the get-go. As I read about her thoughts, emotions and her ideas for the future, a shared future with Will, I just wanted to cuddle her up and perhaps steer her in another direction, a happier, more promising one. Will was dirty dog, and when a titbit of information is revealed to Candice in regards to Will and his wife? I absolutely hit the roof on Candice's behalf. I mean REALLY, WILL?! REAAAALLY?! YOU'RE GOING TO DO THAT RIGHT NOW?!?! Argh, rage! Portia was such a gorgeous woman, inside and out, with a heart of gold, despite having such a tragic past. She was so besotted with Will, and the author achieved such a fantastic hook between Candice and Will, describing to me perfectly how Candice felt towards him. Will had such a hold over her and I was desperate for Candice to break free, but in two minds about whether she'd have the strength to actually do so. Will was very controlling in terms of Candice's life, especially in regards to her watching figure and being careful about what she ate. I hate to see it but the girl had it bad, and I hated Will for having her wrapped around his little fingers so tightly.
There were so many wonderful, engaging characters within Drive Me Crazy, all funny and charming in their own ways, but what I loved most about this novel was the adventure of self-discovery that Candice ends up going on. It was incredibly heart-warming, and the transition of Candice's character from beginning to end was beautifully achieved. With the help of annoying (yet bloody gorgeous) IT geek Danny, Candice sets out on what was supposed to be a romantic getaway, organised by Will, until he is needed by his wife, meaning he can no longer join her on the trip. I was absolutely THRILLED when I realised that it would in fact be Geordie guy Danny who'd be accompanying Candice on the trip, and with the slightly bad vibes between them, I just knew it was going to be the trip of a lifetime that could perhaps show Candice that she could enjoy life without a dirty dog beside her, and perhaps a handsome, geeky, Geordie guy instead. From drunken tattoos to honeymoon suites, a relationship between Candice and Danny begins to slowly build, but friends or something more? Who knows. Maybe Candice will never be able to get over Will, but she sure as hell is going to enjoy herself on this trip, Danny will make sure of it.
Ultimately, Drive Me Crazy is about letting go of the things that hold you back from being the person you truly are, about screaming out "YOLO!" and enjoying every single second of the life you are given. This story was inspirational in more ways than one, making me want to set off on my own journey and see where I'd end up. It's about taking chances, believing in yourself and even, if needs be, throwing out a few expletives. Life was made for living, and Drive Me Crazy beautifully enforces that upon the reader, as well as taking us on a trip with two hilarious characters who don't realise quite how much they each need the other.
Becca's Books is awarding Drive Me Crazy by the fabulous Portia Macintosh with FIVE SCRUMPTIOUS CUPCAKES! Like I said at the beginning of my review, this author's books are just getting better and better, more enjoyable as each one is published and I cannot wait to see what Portia Macintosh gives her readers next. Hopefully more sassy heroines, and definitely more gorgeously geeky heroes!
I was worried during the first half of this book with the toxic characters, but the second half made up for it. This one was genuinely funny. It would’ve easily been five stars if it weren’t so much talk of dieting.
4.5 stars 🌟 I did not love the first part of the book when her then boyfriend was making such a fuss about her weight and what she ate, but the rest of laugh of loud funny and so cute!
Candice Hart’s parents both took seriously ill whilst she was finishing sixth form. She didn’t go to uni, instead staying at home, getting a job and caring for them. After first her un and then her Dad died, she was alone. Her boss, Will Starr, started comforting her and saying he loved her. she was naive enough to be taken in by his “my wife doesn’t understand me” lies.
Danny Wright is the new IT guy. He asks Candice out the first day he see her, which is also his first day in the job. Will is jealous but knows he’s planning spending a week together with Candice touring other factories in the Starr company. The best laid plans, however, don’t always work out and Will receives a phone call that has him cancelling their tour. He suggests that Candice go with someone else so she chooses to go with Danny. having made her choice will she live to rejoice or regret it?
What a lying deceitful, throttle worthy boss Will Starr was! I really hated him and his attitude to female staff, just as the author intended. Danny, however, was a dream male - straight talking, caring, honest and handsome, too. I enjoyed how he encourages Candy to ditch the false persona she’s created to appease Will and to be proud of herself rather than trying to change into someone she really isn’t. I don’t particularly appreciate some of the language used but it seemed appropriate in context and wasn’t used to upset or in an inappropriate manner.
After a start where you feel like trying to alert Candice to how she’s being used whilst also ensuring Will can never abuse his post in the company to enable him to manipulate and sexually use his female employees like this again. I actually hope it acts as a wake up call for any young ladies being manipulated in a similar manner by their sleazy boss or married boyfriend. I loved Danny. He’a a great character, encouraging Candy to be herself and giving her the courage and support to do so. This is a great read I highly recommend!
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley too, for letting me read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Not reading the blurb of the book before reading the book turned out to be a jackpot with this one! I had no idea what i was expecting and the book was a laugh riot with just the right amount of romance, banter and fun. It was tough to read the initial chapters where Candice was a naive doormat and yes, you knew everything that was going to happen before it happened but it is to the author's credit that it did not diminish the reading value. The leading man was such a fun loose cannon. There was no drama, angst or misunderstanding before the couple gets together and I love that the best. My first by the author and won't be the last!
We've gone from one man negging and manipulating her into being a Stepford wife to another man negging and manipulating her into being what HE wants. Coworkers don't generally dictate to others how they should dress sit and act.
This is toxic af. DNF because of extreme assholery.
Brilliantly written, a wonderful story that just proves that no matter how bad things are, anything can happen to turn it around. Perfect for a feel good read
Sadly, I was very underwhelmed by this book. I still enjoy MacIntosh's work, but this particular book didn't really do it for me. The romance wasn't bad, per se, but the heroine was on the stupider side. Everything was pretty predictable, but I could have overlook that if there were any other element that swept me off my feet. There really wasn't. The comedy didn't speak to me this time, not really, and the scenes with Danny's family didn't really warm my heart. They were a weird bunch.
So, the book is about a woman named Candice, or Candy, as Danny calls her. Candice has an affair with her boss, Will. Will is married with kids, but he swears his marriage is over. He and his wife are just not divorced yet. Candice knows Will's wife, and she knows she is a very classy woman, she changes herself to be more of Will's type. She stops swearing, she buys herself classic-looking boring clothes, and she, basically, allows Will to groom her.
The relationship breaks when Candice finds out that Will's wife is pregnant with yet another baby. Candice expectedly break up with Will, but there was a business trip that they were supposed to go together, and she doesn't want to give up on going, becasue she doesn't want Will to think that she is upset over their break-up. So, Candice decides to go, and she invites the new IT guy working at the same company as her, Danny to come with her. Danny was asking Candice out from the moment they met each other, so he says yes. But all the reservations were made for a couple, not for two friends on a business trip. Danny and Candice have to stay in the same room for the entire trip, and they cannot help but get intimate.
As I said, all felt pretty predictable, and the romance was fine, but the comedy fell short, for me. One little surprise was to learn that the only women in Will's life weren't Candice and his wife. He was cheating on his wife with Candice, yes, but at the same time, he is cheating on Candice with the cleaning lady.
P.S. There was one scene that Candice needed to have afinal conversation with Will. That is understandable. Danny didn't want her to talk to Will, which is also understandable. But Danny left Candice behind when she didn't change her mind about talking to Will, which isn't fine. It bothered me that he was ready to leave her in a moment's notice, when she did something that he didn't like.
Everything about this screams that I shouldn't like it, but I fell completely in love with this quirky romance.
Candice is having an affair with her boss and she has fallen hook, line and sinker for his line that he and his wife are only together because Starr Haulage is a "family business". I'm not entirely sure whether Candice is naive or desperate but as a start to a book it put my judgmental hackles up. As the first few chapters progress you see how manipulated she is and how she changes her speech and her dress to please this middle-aged man, allowing him to completely dominate her life - the reason a week long business trip where they can experience a "normal relationship". I would normally give up at this point and ditch the book, somehow Portia McIntosh kept me reading.
I am so glad she did.
There is just something so charming about the whole thing - watching Candice blossom under her friendship with Geordie Shore when they are forced to take the business trip together is actually rather marvellous. I don't know if it's the time of year (read a few days before Valentine's Day) but this book gave me the warm fuzzies and made me chuckle. Yes, some of the scenarios are so far fetched as to beggar belief but there is so much heart within these pages you just find yourself going along with all.
The pacing is fast and there is a fair bit of internal monolguing from Candice (which normally irritates me) but it just works. It really, really shouldn't and I am sure even the most laissez faire feminist would have palpitations at the contents but, it is FUN and what more can you ask for?
Another winner from Portia MacIntosh. A light-hearted and funny story about a young woman, Candice, who has been having an affair with her boss for a year. She has moulded herself to be everything he wants her to be. She dresses to please him, eats what he tells her she should and spends her life waiting for the moments they spend together. Of course Will has told her his wife doesn't understand him, they don't live as man and wife and it's just a matter of time before he leaves so that he and Candice can be together. Candice believes every word Will tells her, until on the day they are meant to be going away on a romantic holiday disguised as a business trip, Will's wife is taken to hospital to give birth to their baby. So much for not being together as man and wife. In a fit of pique Candice announces she is going on the trip and taking the annoying new IT guy, Danny, with her. Danny is is a bit of a Peter Pan character and is rather irresponsible in his lifestyle. During the trip he encourages Candice to let her hair down, or at least change its colour. lift up her hemlines an end even get a tattoo. They get into some hilarious situations together as they travel around the country staying in posh hotels that had been booked by the boss. Danny is in her corner even though he comes across as reckless and guides her towards finding her true character and personality, one that is not influenced by trying to be everything Will wants her to be. I won't spoil it by telling you how the story ends but I imagine it will be all you expect.
I’m a big fan of Portia McIntosh and this book didn’t disappoint, although the lead character (Candice) in the early pages had me sighing in frustration at her acceptance of the way she was being treated by her ‘boyfriend’ and married boss, who was (allegedly) separated from his wife but staying together to keep up appearances for the sake of the company.
Once the book really got going I thoroughly enjoyed it, although, if I’m totally honest, not quite as much as some of the others from this author that I’ve already read.
Danny is everything you want from your leading male (in fiction and in real life!). Good looking, funny, charming and entertaining……..and slightly wild at heart but with a good heart!
It’s a good light hearted Chick Lit book and I would certainly recommend it for the beach!!
I didn't mind this. It was not exceptional and I think the author has written better but it was entertaining for the most part. The road trip premise was probably my least favourite part of it, they covered that much of the country they would have been knackered. It was a lot of driving. If I think about the actual logistics of it I get annoyed so I have to pretend that actually it's not really that far and that when I was 25 I could drive for a few hours and then party all night and then do it all over again the next day and not get breathalysed and not just be shattered and miserable the whole time....
Easy reading. Candy was a good lead character…a girl who is/has made some mistakes, wants to please everyone and has lost her way a little. Cue ‘Geordie’ a cheeky chappy, live life to the full kind of guy. I loved Geordie throughout the book and found him to be a ‘Peter Pan’ like character. My only issue with his was when he wanted Candy to ‘change’ her looks and picked out her clothes (which were of course OTT)
All in, I dont feel like I’ve lost any time by reading this book, it was enjoyable though maybe a little forgettable.
"unputdownable feel-good romance" NOT. This book made me feel like I needed a shower to wash off the icky feeling, and I gave up about halfway through. The last straw was
I’m struggling with this one. On the one hand, as well written and constructed as the rest of her books, but just couldn’t connect with the characters. Well, mostly the main female character. She was almost *too* broken for me, and I found it hard to relate to her. As it was all written from her POV, it tarnished all the other characters for me. Otherwise, good pace, plot and development.
3.5 stars. This is a fun contemporary romance. Danny and Candy are unique characters who have interesting adventures while on the road during a “business” trip. They have good chemistry and are extremely likable and relatable. Some of the plot didn’t really make sense but all in all it was good fun. Received through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
The book is funny and nice. I felt it was kind of misogynistic at times, the internalised misogyny was pretty obvious. But it was nice I guess, might not re-read it though. The starting of the book was so slow, I almost DNFed it.
Barely 3 stars - not her best but I still listened because I loved the Mancunian accent of the narrator! Plus, there were a few outlandish situations that made me laugh so it was a successful rom-com. Lots of swearing which got old after a while.
Maybe I am as uptight as Candice at the beginning of this book, but all that "fun" they seem to be having on the road trip sounds awful. Also, Danny is so annoying.
