Rise of Vaelus is a dark epic fantasy about how a wounded child becomes a threat to an entire world. In the realm of Solara, humans are created without innate magic, but later receive living spellbooks that develop according to their experiences. Vaelus, descended from the god Orethos, is born with the unique ability to absorb life, magic, and power—a gift that manifests violently because of his abusive upbringing and isolation.
As Vaelus grows, his pain turns into obsession. He develops increasingly dangerous abilities—Absorption, Retention, Merge, Continuance, and Inheritance—and eventually builds the Maw, a fortress and organization dedicated to discovering a way to defeat death itself.
Opposing him are the Eternal Three—Valkour, Aurensyl, and Baldwin Blackmane—immortal human guardians created by the gods to protect humanity. Their strengths represent three different forms of force, knowledge/organization, and secrecy/precision.
The story ultimately becomes a massive conflict over the thirty-seven divine obelisks surrounding Solara. Vaelus discovers that he can corrupt their protective magic, eventually wounding fourteen of them before the Eternal Three stop him. A century later, a fifteenth has been corrupted, but twenty-two remain clean, suggesting that the war is far from over.
