A car accident changes everything…

A computer hacked hospital blood test confirms that Dr. Toni Parthen carries a gene that’s the key to salvation for a unique race of human beings. Abducted to a secret, underground community, Toni is asked to do the unthinkable: procreate with a man from a race called Vârcolac—a species that must consume the blood of other humans to survive. Then bizarre turns dangerous, because a new, mysterious enemy also wants her special DNA, and Toni finds herself in the middle of an all-out war to possess her.

Destined to be alone…

It’s the job of Jaċken Brun, leader of the Warrior Class, to keep the captured women safe from a demonic race of humans who rule a neighboring part of their underground world. His challenges multiply when Toni inflames the women into mutiny, and then there’s his biggest problem…his growing desire for the infuriating woman herself. Afflicted with a dark genetic makeup, Jaċken can never be with a woman. But that doesn't stop him from chasing after her when the new enemy faction unearths Toni and drags her to their hidden lair, where they’ll inflict an unspeakable cruelty on her to gain access to her valuable genes.

It will take every warrior skill Jaċken owns to save the woman he loves, but only if he can find her in time….

DNF at: who the hell knows? I was so relieved to stop reading this I didn't even bother to check.

Had I been in my normal nearly-sane mode I would have noticed it. Had I not been in my damn-I’m-so-exhausted-I-can’t-think-straight-I-need-to-sleep-for-three-months mode, I would have noticed it. But I didn’t.

You're wondering why I'm currently eyerolling at myself, aren't you? Here's why: this book had been on my Kindle for ages. I vaguely remembered it was about vampires and even though I’m no fangbanger like some of my dearest friends , I thought to my little self: “hey, what’s the worst thing than could happen? This is only a book after all.” Well, here’s the worst that could have happened: this could have been YA. Or Romance. Or YA Romance. Hey, it could have been a Freaking Paranormal Romance, too. Not as allergy-inducing as the previous two, but still. Sigh. A Freaking Paranormal Romance it was. Damn, I’m way too tired for this shit.

✘✘ I think it is fair to say that this book has the stupidest storyline I ever came across. Oh yes, most definitely. This book is about a bunch of super macho asshole vampires unique race of human beings *eyeroll* who live in some kind of secret underground town/bat cave/whatever. They need to consume the blood of other humans being to survive, but don't you call them vampires, these guys here have absolutely nothing to do with pathetic bloodsuckers. Please don't insult them, they're a Super Cool race called Varcolac. That sounds suspiciously like an antibiotic name to me but hey, what do I know? Anyway, the Antibiotic Dudes Varcolac guys kidnap human women who have a particular type of blood. Then force them to live in their happy little underground community. Yay! Then force them into marriage with one of the Super Antibiotic Dudes from their Super Warrior Class. Double yay! Then force them to have kids together so that the race can live on. Triple yay! You think we got ourselves a winner here? Wait, it gets better! Because you know what's really great about this story? It's that most of the abducted women are super-duper cool with the way they are treated by the Antibiotic Clique! Well okay, they don't like it much at first but who wouldn't love to be forced into marrying to a Super Sexy Macho Asshole? Especially when all that is expected of you is to be his dedicated broodmare. That's pretty irresistible, if you ask me.

Yes, feminism just committed suicide. Again. And it shouldn’t come as a surprise to you. No it shouldn't. This is PNR after all.

✘✘ Surpringly enough, I will not be adding the female lead in this story to my favourite kick-ass heroines list. Flabbergasting, is it not? I mean, she is everything I love and want to read about. Page 2: she refers to her (BIG) breasts as the Girls (yes, Girls with a capital G). And here I am, thinking: “oh, this is going to be good!” ← simultaneous translation: "do I shoot myself in the head right now or do I wait for a few more chapters?" But wait, it gets even better. Because not only is our dear heroine Big-Breasted, she’s a total Blonde Bombshell too. With a Hot-As-Sin Body. And she smells so freaking good she has the whole Antibiotic Clique going totally nuts (meaning they all want to jump her on the spot) whenever she shows up (I kid you not). But hey, it's not her fault. It's all because of Freaking Pheromones, you see. So the resident batcave MD/scientist/whatever gives her some kind of stinking mud to put behind her ears to lessen the impact of her oh-wow-you-smell-so-freaking-good-I-want-to-do-you-right-here natural scent.

But hey, it’s not ALL bad. Because she may be a Blonde-Sex-Bomb-with-A-Killer-Body-and-a-Pair-of-Big-Girls but she also has a brain. Yes she does. Please refrain from fainting. She's actually a freaking haematologist (wow wow wow, big word alert!). And, I quote, behaving idiotically isn't her usual style. Seriously? A Sensible Super Hot Woman with more than two grey cells? Nah, I don't believe you, there is no such thing.

✘✘ I'm pretty sure you're anxious to hear about the Super Antibiotic Dudes Varcolac Warriors at this point. And who wouldn't want to? I mean, they do ooze maleness through every single pore of their to-die-for physiques: chiseled face, broad shoulders, solidly sculpted/well-defined/smooth chests, ripped abs and powerful muscles... They are all ridiculously gorgeous and have enough innate sex appeal to melt iron. And they wear black shorts styled after Calvin Klein boxer-briefs. AND the trim cut of the shorts emphasizes each man’s potency in a manner that gives the impression of straining seams and near-popping front laces. And they're horny all the time. Damn. Where is this secret Antibiotic Community and when I can move in? No wonder the women in this story don't mind being pushed around by this bunch of overbearing, controlling, dim-witted mega assholes. And no wonder they don't mind being turned into breeding rabbits against their will. I would too, given the chance. No one can resist such Damned Hot Bastards.

✘✘ You think it doesn't get better than this? Think again. Because you haven't met our hero yet. Not only does he have the required built-in Mega Warrior Hotness, he is also the biggest asshole of them all. Obviously. He is Raw. But it's not his fault, you see. Because there is a hurt child inside of him, a boy who doesn't want to feel so alone. A boy who spent his childhood being scared, lost, vulnerable and just trying to survive. No wonder our dear heroine falls for him so hard. His unlikeable, domineering, bastard persona is nothing but a front to hide the broken, lonely little boy inside him. Who wouldn't want to be his broodmare? But you know what makes him truly irresistible? He is a 56-year-old virgin with the body of a 30-year-old Navy SEAL. I. Kid. You. Not And this is when we find out why the Antibiotic Clique Varcolac Super Dudes are horny ALL THE TIME: they can't have sex until they find their mate. And despite being their Super Hot Irresistible Selves it looks like it takes them YEARS to find said mate. No wonder they end up kidnapping most of them. Can you imagine walking around with a hard-on for YEARS?

And this is where our dear heroine experiences an enlightening moment. Because until she met her Antibiotic Warrior Dude, she'd never understood the male obsession with virginity. How it was that the moment a guy found out a girl was a virgin, the first thing he wanted to do was take it? Boy, oh boy, does she get it now. From the minute she finds out our hero is –hum- sexually inexperienced, all she can think about is jumping his bones and plundering his virginity all to hell like the worst sort of pirate wench. Okay then. To my credit, I got as far as the deflowering of the Super Horny Super Sexy Super Antibiotic Warrior Dude. And then I gave up. Because I got tired of screaming internally. And Because there is only so much shit I can take.

ETA: after reading this review some of my dear friends have been trying to convince me that there is such a thing as non-crappy/infuriating PNR out there . Since I'm the adventurous type I've decided to challenge all you PNR Freaks to find a Freaking PNR Novel I will actually Freaking Enjoy. Actually no, scratch that. At this point I will settle for a Freaking PNR Novel I will neither hate nor DNF. So? Who will be brave enough to send me a rec? Just remember that doing so implies willingly submitting yourself to the infamous Robin Penance Thing: if I hate the book you recommended you will have to read any book of my choosing. Now shudder.

So much potential. So much fail.

I'm honestly surprised this has so many 4 and 5 star reviews. Although most of them seem to have received this book for free through good reads or directly from the author.

The story telling is disjointed. Jumping scene's. The female characters are just awful. Every single one of them is riddled with insecurities but not in any compelling way.

Their POV analysis of themselves reads like a text book. Then they decide to be stupid, put themselves, their children and their entire community at risk just to teach the men a lesson. I was honestly hoping at least one of them would be kidnaped by the villains just to teach the women a lesson.

The story telling was frequently immature. From a love scene referring to a breast as a boob, to a scene where the men get drunk and light their farts on fire, to a villain calling someone a fudge packer, who talks like this?

I can not decide if this was written by someone who fancies themselves an armchair psychologist or a frat boy. Either way I will not be reading anymore from this author.

Favorite Lines “You’re Nurse Fine Ass!”

“Other divorced fathers saw their children, right? Weekends and every other Christmas, half of summer vacation. So it must’ve been me, don’t you see. I’d done something to drive him away.”

“You Vârcolac males like to make us Dragons think we’re so special to you, but the truth is,” she lowered her voice to a hiss, “we’re not even worth the effort for you to fight for us.”

“I didn’t get it before. I wasn’t listening, either, but I’m sure listening now.” Keeping an arm around her shoulders, Arc started to lead her toward the double doors. “I suggest everyone in this room start doing the same.”

“Our whole lives, both of us have been the square pegs in the round holes. We’ve never fit in.”

“Are you going to make me sit on you until you agree to bond with me, Jaċken? Because I’ll do it. You know I will.”

“Two against the world, Mrs. Brun. You and I. For always and forever.”

What a fabulously funny book! There was so much going on in this book and I didn't feel overwhelmed I loved it. This book is different from others because it didn't end after the smoking hot alpha male got the girl it kept going!
I won't bore you with details but, I will tell you this has races I've never heard of, heroines who use there minds to win, and hero who may be tortured by their past but love helps them face their future. This authors does an amazing job of bring her world to you and making you want to stay. I didn't stop once I opened my iPad when it was over I ran to authors website and found when the next book was coming out. I can't wait to see what paranormal stories this author comes up with next.
Everyone needs to give this book a chance you will be laughing at loud and loving this world!

When I read some of the reviews. And they were like it's better than the Black Dagger Brotherhood. I was like OMG!!! I love that series, so I must read this. My opinion is its not better, not by a long shot. But then again I hold BDB on a pedestal. Please don't misunderstand this is a great series and story. The characters are well defined and its an easy read. I wanted to know what was going to happen the whole time. I also am going to start the second book in the series. So all in all great story and I like it!

Dr. Toni Parthen is a blood specialist who occasionally assists law enforcement with homicide investigations. One night, after leaving a crime scene, she is involved in a car accident that lands her in the hospital. Then, as if things couldn’t get any worse, she is drugged and abducted by a group of men during her recovery. The leader of the group, Jacken Brun, isn’t truly a man at all, but the leader of the Varcolac -- a warrior class of vampire-like beings, who are on the edge of extinction.

Jacken's job is to assist in preserving the Varcolac race by capturing and protecting women who carry a special blood chemistry. Toni discovers the truth as she awakens in a secret, underground village. She has a tough time coming to grips with her bazaar new predicament, and is further perplexed by the attraction she feels toward the enigmatic Jacken. Still, she is determined to escape. But beyond the village, new dangers are lurking.

This is a fantastic debut novel, that left me wanting more! The characters were wonderfully written, and played an intricate role in the story. The camaraderie between the warriors was wicked cool, with Toni being by far my favorite character in the novel. She was the epitome of a great heroine: intelligent, witty, strong, and with a dash of snark. She refused to allow anyone to intimidate her, which made her the perfect match for Jacken. He, on the other hand, had no clue how to handle her.

Toni's presence created all sorts of mayhem and hilarious situations. Upon learning that she was being held captive for the purpose of breeding, she responds, "You’ll excuse me if I decline your invitation... having turkey blasters filled with 'vampire' sperm stuck up inside of me isn’t particularly my idea of a good time." Ha! Nor is it mine, Toni.

Despite their tactics, I couldn't help sympathizing with the desperation and desire of the Varcolac to preserve their race. They were by no means horrible toward any of the women captured. Instead, they showed kindness. I found it fascinating that this small community of powerful and ancient beings had been relegated to the shadows, and to living as cave dwellers. Their culture, and the bits of history uncovered were intriguing and beautifully descriptive, giving the impression that things were not always this way for the Varcolac.

The Bloodline War is a fantastic novel filled with wit, action, and adventure. I definitely recommend this story to anyone who loves paranormal romance.

Strong females, powerful men who are brought to their knees by these women, sound good? What if I added action, intrigue, a kidnapping or three, hysterical moments that make you laugh out loud, tender moments that will warm your heart and intimate moments that will cause global warming? Sound like this may be a good read? Kick in dragons, vampires and demons for good measure and what you get is Tracy Tappan’s Bloodline War and one fantastic, fresh take on paranormal romantic intrigue!
Did I mention that every single male was huge, hot and powerful, yet had personalities that almost had me laughing one minute and crying the next; they were so “real “and loyal to each other. Their sexual activity was based on whether they were mated or not, so no manwhores here!

Toni is a beautiful woman, but along with her brother, never quite fits into that pigeon hole of life. She has her job, her brains, the poor choices she has made in the dating arena to contend with, but all of that becomes history when she is kidnapped and taken far below the surface of her world and plunked down in the middle of a secret world of people of myths and legends, or so she thought. Headstrong and brave, she wants to go home, to be freed, but nooooo, she is told she is a descendant of dragons and only her special blood chemistry can help a dying race, the Varcolac procreate. She can have any man she wants, except for the one who has caught her eye and her heart. Jacken is not allowed to breed, as his bloodline is considered tainted, even though he is one of the strongest warriors, it is forbidden. The Varcolac are not the only ones who want Toni and her “imprisonment” is for her own good, too bad she doesn’t agree and gets all of the other women to stand up to their men and go to the surface in protest, taking their children with them. Will there be a standoff at the O K Corral? Will the leader see thee is a better way to keep his people alive? Will Jacken and Toni remain forbidden to share their love?

Tracy Tappan has a hit series on her hands that is full of action, great characters, snark and attitude while her crisp writing style has built an underground world that almost breathes, it feels so real! Her ability to dole out nuggets of information is brilliantly paced. I’m on board for more in this series after such a fabulously fresh foundation.

I received a copy from the author as part of The Bloodline War Tour & Giveaway stopping at Tome Tender April 16, 2014 in exchange for my honest review.

This book is odd. The writing style was difficult to get into at first. It reminded me of JRWard Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Except in this series, the writing perspective comes from multiple characters that it is difficult to keep them straight and remember who is who. This book is about a 'vampire' race who is dying out and kidnap 'dragon' women to reproduce with. The concept of Stockholm syndrome plays a big part in this book because these idiotic women end up falling in "love" with the men who kidnap them after a couple weeks/months, marry them, and then have there babies. As a reader, if you can get past this ridiculous notion for a story plot, then the book is alright until you get half way in. Then the writing changes and instead of reading about grown men, which you are, the immaturity levels drop to high schooler boys. And not to mention the beyond awkward sex! The author struggles to give each character there own personality and voice. In the beginning of the book, Tappan does a nice job but again around the half way point all the characters sounds the same and have the same language/sense of humor/etc. there was also a strong Christian overtone to the story- where the good guy 'vampires' remain vurgins until they find there love and then mate for life. And the 'dragon' females have horrible unsatisfactory sex that leaves them feeling bad about themselves until of course they find there 'vampire' husband and then it's amazing and perfect.... Really?!?! Overall, this book was just to ridiculous to finish.

Tracy Tappan is a new author to me. I picked this book up because of the dark aspects of the story, it sounded interesting to me. As Tracy is a new author to me I kinda went in cautious but to my surprise this was a really good book. Lots of action, virgin males, kidnapping, evil creatures, hot sex, and an interesting story line.

The only reason I am giving it 4 instead of 5 is the author put a lot of focus on the other characters in the story, way to much for my liking. To me there just wasn't enough time put into the main characters. (it was still good but I think I lost some "could of been" valuable info) I think I would of connected better to their budding relationship if there was more focus. Yes I am greedy like that, I NEED to know everything about them!

I think I got to much info on Kimberly and her man which I didn't want since it wasn't their story. (Arc and his woman also but not as bad as Kimberly).

I really liked the authors writing, it flowed well with me. She wrote great characters (At least I was not annoyed to hell and back with the female lead character Toni and I find that ALOT of authors write some annoying ass females).

I can't wait to dive into the next book and see where its headed!

Since the first of the year, I have read well over 100 books. They ranged from short stories to over 800 pages. They covered the entire spectrum of the romance genre. They were written by debut indie authors and best selling authors like J. R. Ward and Nora Roberts. Some were exceptional and will grace my library for decades. Some I have already forgotten. I can say with no hesitation and no qualms whatsoever that The Bloodline War is the BEST book I have read this year to date. It was soooo hard to keep this review under wraps until the post date because I wanted to grab people, and tweet people and say READ this book!! Read it now, now, NOW!! I was literally doing a happy dance through most of the story.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review (Lovers of Paranormal). I started and finished this book today. I absolutely loved it! To me, it's slightly reminiscent of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood, but I actually preferred the Varcolac to the Brothers. The women are strong, the men are hot and the action is exciting. I will definitely be looking out for the next book in this series.

I was given this novel in exchange for an honest review (LOP)
WARNING THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!!!!!

To start off I would just like to thank that author for sharing this novel with LOP and for writing it in general. This was an amazing novel, it had just the right amount of twists and turn to keep you on the edge of your seat without confusing the reader. The writing was also spectacular, the imagery allowed for a virtual movie to play within my mind of what life in Tarana would be like. I especially liked imagining what the men would like like ;).

At the beginning of the novel you are introduced to Toni, she is a blood doctor who after a car accident was hospitalized and discovered to have a variant in her blood called peak 8. This variant allows her to reproduce with Varcolac’s, AKA vampire. Her “race” is known as dragons for the dragon tattoo that is usually upon their backs in some form or another at birth. When the underground community of Varcolac’s became aware of the peak 8 in her blood they set into motion to obtain her and bring her back to Tarana to hopefully mate with one of their warriors to help prevent their race from dyeing out. This plan kind of back fires on the leader of the town Roth. For starters when she is first told about the Varolac’s she didn't freak out in the normal way she actually took an envelope open and threatened to cute Dr. Jess (Varolac doctor) throat with it. This was one of her first conscious interactions with Jacken, he was the one who disarmed her and placed her rather abruptly in the chair in front of Roth’s desk. I found it quiet comical that someone who is betrayed as such a rational mind would believe that threatening 3 huge men with an envelope opener would achieve the escape she was craving. After this amazing stunt of hers that had me giggling for about 20 minutes, she was introduced to her “mating” options, which all have their own special abilities.

The next part of the novel that needs to be discussed because it was absolutely scandalous and AWESOME! After the talk with the other 5 dragon women and Kimberly coming up with the plan to steal a warriors key card so that they could escape topside, Toni took action. Unfortunately she ended up in Dev’s room when he was showering and did not make it out before he came out soaking wet and as naked as the day he was born. Just the imagery conjured from the words used within this “scene” almost damn near took my breath away, with how Dev was described he is an absolute knockout like mouth watering make you stupefied knockout. After escaping from Dev instead of running back to her room she dodged into the room next door which ended up being Jacken’s room. Being the guarded man that he is his first reaction was pretty much why the hell are you in here and get out. With not knowing his past or what the stipulations he has to stay within the community his reactions always seemed like they came from a dark and angry place. Within this interaction the author gave you a very brief but heart wrenching view into part of the past that helped shape the “man of steel” that Jacken has been portrayed as so far. With this glimpse into his past you are also blessed with a glimpse into Toni’s past which causes an unexpected bond to form between Toni and Jacken.

Well, the major event in this novel for me was when Toni escaped her protective detail while on a date with one of her mate chooses. With the size of these men you would think that she would not be able to do this but it is amazing what someone to do to a guy when they knee him in the nuts. Before this Jacken and his brothers were all put on leave because their little brother lost control when he got a whiff on the smell Toni gives off. It so happens that Jacken and his older brother, Nyko were at the bar in which Toni and her date came too. By now you have become aware of the feelings Jacken has towards Toni, feelings in which he believes he can never act upon because of a vow he made. It really shows how powerful her unmated scent is when almost every male within the bar curled up in a combination of pain and ecstasy when she walks in. In this part the author shows you another connection forming between Jacken and Toni, this happens when she comes over to his table and hands him two ibuprofen since he looks like he has a headache. If only she knew that it was her that was affecting him so much, he was having a mini pity party because he could never have her. Even though Jacken pushes her away he is the first one who leaps to action when she escaped. He was also the person who found her within the bar in their “slum," he tried everything to get her to come back with him. He even shared another piece of his past, that he knew how to felt to fell trapped, with this you can almost see a visible string forming between Jacken and Toni but Toni ends up running out of the bar. This caused an entire other set of problems when the Om Rau from the other side of the hell tunnels smell her and figure out she is unmated. After this Lorke comes and gets through the gate and almost successfully steals Toni away. Jacken screams at Dev to get her out of here but when Dev picked her up and ran for the mansion Toni decided to play doctor and grabbed his nuts and squeezed causing them both to go tumbling onto the ground. The descriptive words used to describe how surprised Dev was by this action has me laughing, I could picker the face that Dev gave her. After this funny episode you are thrown right into the mist of a battle with Lorke, who is one of the leader of the other town. After breaking through the gates he throws a Batani Blade at both Jacken and Toni. Jacken dodges the blade and Dev jumps in front of the blade that was heading for Toni. When it smacks into his shoulder Toni witnesses first hand the damage that a Batani blade can do, it blows Dev’s shoulder to pieces and even when Dev tells her to run she can’t. Toni is paralyzed with fear and so was I, I wanted so badly to find out what happened but at the same time didn't want to turn the page. When Lorke grabs her and gives her one mean uppercut to the chin my heart stopped, my first thought was this cannot be the end, Toni can’t be taken not when the bond between her and Jacken is starting to get even stronger. Then Jacken comes to her aid and starts throwing daggers at Lorke to get him to let her go, when he finally vanishes back into the hell tunnels Toni is left beaten and bruised. All she wanted was Jacken to come to her and comfort her but he was too inside his own head to do anything for her. Later on you get to see how much he beats himself up for this and it is enduring that inside that hard exterior is a man who wanted nothing then to be there for her but couldn’t.

When Jacken makes her stop crying it was amazing the reaction he had, it was like a little kids excitement after saving up enough money for a toy they wanted. He felt on top of the world and they have a very touching moment that made me hold my breath to see what was gonna happen next. But unfortunately at that time nothing happened because you were once again slammed by a heart wrenching piece of Jacken’s past, Lorke was the man who did the tattoo parties that left him scared, Lorke is Jacken’s father.

Then Toni finally starts to believe that Varcolac’s are real and that everyone here was not just pulling her leg. This revelation came by when she went to the hospital to see Dev after the attack from Lorke, she witnessed the amazing healing power of a pure breed Varcolac when Dev’s shoulder was almost completely healed in 3 days. After realizing this she took off and demanded to see Jacken since she was once told that Jacken and his brothers are the only ones who can control their fangs. After barging into his room she demanded to see his fangs and at first he refused and said it was not a good idea since it would be an intimate act between him and her. In the end he ended up giving in and letting her see them, she shoved her wrist in his face so that her scent could help him elongate his fangs. When his fangs were out she examined them and found out that they were hollow so that the Finta can come out allowing the giver of the blood to not feel so much pain once this substance is within their blood stream. After seeing this she tries to get him to bite her so that she can feel what it is like since the other dragon women told her that the Finta causes great sexual pleasure. The scarred boy backing into a corner reaction for Jacken was hilarious. Then the author sends your emotions for another roller coaster ride when you learn the exact implications of the vow he and his brothers took. He can never take a mate, since his genes cause the aggression gene to go through the roof. This was like a sucker punch in my gut, I wanted Jacken and Toni to be together so bad and it was even more heart wrenching when Toni walked out and told him that he was not the only one with a lonely life ahead of him.

Well, the next thing that had me laughing myself off my bed was when Toni was injected with a drug that made her go gaga for the first men she sees. She was drugged by the topside Om Rau and the guy buggered it all up and allowed Jacken to be the first man she saw. This caused her to jump on him and try to have her naughty way with him, for the first bit of this interaction Jacken was trying to get her off him but then Dr. Jess came in and shot Jacken with the drugs that were meant for Toni. This caused him to go full Rau and started trying to bite Toni, this of course caused an up roar and when it was over Toni and Jacken were called into Roth’s office and told that nothing of it was real. Except Toni held part of her awareness through the entire experience so for her the feelings she had were completely real. After this incident Toni completely extracted herself from the community giving the dragons the opportunity to escape with the help of Toni’s brother, Alex. Alex hacked into the communities computers and sent beth and Kim a machine that would allow them to get past the security boxes. Beth decided that she would be the one to stay because she needed to be able to confront her fear of confrontation.

When they are topside Toni and her brother discover that they are from a royal line of fey. With this knowledge they called a meeting with Roth and Toni demanded that Jacken come. This had me wondering why Toni is requesting Jacken when we were lead to believe that they could never be together. As the meeting progresses everyone is made aware of the unique blood line that Toni and Alex come from and that with this Toni can be a leader in Tarana without disrupting their culture. This also sends Jacken for a loop. After everything is agreed upon Toni turns to Jacken and tells him that she wants to be his mate but she needs to know that he loves her before she will return to Tarana. After some grumbling he finally admitted that he was completely in love with her. Then a huge curve ball is thrown at the readers, with Toni’s unique blood line she is able to reproduce with Jacken without their children being aggressive. Once they are back in Tarana Jacken and Toni are finally able to be together but Jacken has kind of a mini freak out. The scene of them being together for the first time and everything else that happens (gotta read the book to get the sexy parts ;) ) Toni’s dragon birth mark come out in full force. Bring her to Dr, jess they find out that the finta that comes out of Varcolac’s fangs helped bring out Toni’s Fey powers.

After finding out that she was ovulating and being attacked by a glazed out and full Rue Toni runs to the surface and sees her mom. Without the knowledge that Jacken needs to feed every 2-3 days Toni is unaware that he is almost in blood coma until a group of warriors come into the bar in which she is with her mom. From the knowledge her mom gains, she tells Toni that ever since she gave her baby away in high school she has been closed off and has pushed people away including her. Toni’s mom believes that this is what she is doing to her husband and gave her a photo of her and her baby so that she could tell Jacken about it. After their reunion and their talk about the baby she gave away the top side Om Rau barge into their hotel room and take Toni hostage. When they get to their home, Ren (top side Om Rau) tries to rape Toni but is interrupted when her husband and a group of warriors come to her rescue. You also find out that Toni is able to remove the immortality rings that the topside Om Rau wear. She also comes to know that the man who is responsible for kidnapping her and telling one of his men to get her pregnant her was her own father.

At the end you see that Toni has been able to bring more dragon women to the community without kidnapping them. As well you learn of the reason who Kim has a barrier between herself and her husband sledge. A previous boyfriend beat her and ended up killing her unborn child, the reaction you see from Sledge shows his love for her. He is tormented by what this man did to his wife and in the end got ahold of the guy and made sure he would never place football again. Kin was also able to get a john with Bitterman, Zanhuch and Pickett as a junior associate and you get to see her and Sledge’s relationship flourish.

All in all I cannot believe the quality of the writing in this novel. The descriptions are spectacular and the interwoven layers of conflict, love and friendship keeps the reader on the edge of their seats. I will definitely be following the publication of this author, Her book has quickly made it into my favourites list. I look forward to reading it again a month or so. Loved it and would recommend it to anyone if they are searching for a read that pulled on your heart strings, keeps you in suspense, makes you laugh, makes you cry and/or makes you want to never put it down. Thank you for sharing your talent for writing with the world as well as LOP. It was a honour to read your novel and an even bigger honour to review it.

Ummm, okay, what the hell just happened? I think I'm in the Twilight Zone or something! I was seriously hating the characters, like, for real! I almost quit the book! But Tracy Tappan must be a damn witch because I ended up absolutely loved this son-of-a-biscuiting book!!!!!

Toni, the heroine, was a totally awesome character. She a blood doctor and dang, she was one cool customer! At the start of the book, Toni had been pretty unlucky in love for most of her adult life but she finally agreed to go on a date with this cute, sexy, sweet homicide detective who had been asking her out for a while. I was excited for her about the date but a terrible accident happens and her whole life changes. Toni ends up in an underground community filled with the Varcolac, a friendly vampire-like species. I was so glad that she held on to her skepticism for most of the book because I was pretty pissed at the Varcolac men. What they were doing, abducting human women and bringing them to live in the community, was sort of understandable but horrible. So I was thrilled that she didn't just give in to their hotness like I expected she would. I loved how devious she was in some of her plots to escape the underground world where they all live. She was equal parts smart, brave, and stubborn! I really liked pretty much everything about her!

Jacken sounded like he would be a scary-ass S.O.B. He was a total badass and he was actually not very nice at all, especially not to Toni. Somehow though, it was really difficult to dislike him. So much of what I hated about the Varcolac wasn't really about Jacken and it certainly wasn't anything that he would have been able to change. He was sort of a silent sentinel for the first half of the book so it was a little harder to get a bead on him. I thought that a lot of Jacken's thoughts were hilarious and some of them were a little sad (he had a horrible childhood). It was pretty cool that it seemed like he didn't have a sense of humor when he actually did. Plus, he was way more than just a hot, muscley jerk - he could be sweet and understanding. Of course, that side of him doesn't really show until later in the book but it was so great to finally see. Even after his softer side comes out, he's still an impressive alpha male, and that's really what I like!

I would say that the Sexy Time was definitely concentrated in the second half of the book so dirty girls will need to be patient. But there is a payoff in the form of some SERIOUSLY hot Sexy Time, so it's worth the wait! There wasn't a lot of obvious romance happening throughout the book but I found myself falling for Jacken, just like Toni was. The way she sort of "handled" him and managed to get information about himself from him was sly AND sweet. But it wasn't only about Toni and Jacken's romance. Two more already established couples go through some issues and it was really cool and actually a little moving at how their stories played out. I thought it was going to be distracting, reading about three separate couples, but it definitely wasn't. I was never confused about who was who and it was super easy to keep up.

Now, I want to be clear that I HATED all the men in this book and I wanted to throw my Kindle across the friggin' room. Full on hate, I'm telling you! THAT is why I'm convinced that this author is a witch or a sorceress or something magical because I can't EVER recall a time that I did such a 180 in how I felt about a book or its characters! I mean, these a-holes are abducting women off the streets, taking them from their friends and family, so that they can effing mate with these dudes in this underground community and start popping out kids?!?!?!? Are you mother effing kidding me!!?!? I was beyond positive that this book was going to go in my Hate pile but I kept reading because I wanted more evidence of how horrible these guys were. And then BOOM! I'm starting to fall for one of them, just like the heroine and I'm ABSOLUTELY loving this book! It's impossible, I tell you! There were tons and tons of laughs, lots of action and fighting, a little bit of sweetness and plenty of hot guys with bulging....muscles! I just cannot say enough good about this book. If you are even a little bit of a fan of paranormal romance, I want you to go, right now, and get this book and try it! I've already started Book 2 and I just went out and got Book 3. I'm already addicted!

Stockholm, abuse at best

So, so very bad. I passionately hated this book, so there was passion at least. I haven't read JR Ward's BDB series, but if this is what it's like, then I'm better off without.

This book was about a bunch of virgin vampire men kidnapping special 'dragon' women and keeping them prisoner until they can be either raped or 'willingly' bred to have vamp babies, in a nutshell. The males vocab is childish machismo and the way they talk about women is repugnant. I honestly wanted the vamps to go extinct. Good riddance. In fact ALL the prose is full of jargon and is difficult to understand unless you're familiar with vague British slang, I guess.

Add to the crass vocab some weird phrases like, "...her eyeballs flexing in terror against their sockets." (Trying way to hard to sound like prose) And "...his young face looking knackered from his long stint of vigilant camping out." What? How about "Her eyes bulged." Or, "he looked exhausted after his stakeout." Simplify. Clarify. Stop trying so hard that the text becomes impenetrable. Then there's, "Red caught Black a perishing smacker on the jaw." I honestly at first thought HE KISSED HIM! How about, "He slugged him on the jaw?" A perishing smacker? Really?

The vocabulary the author used was so colloquial and full of dense slang and misogynistic verbiage, I half wonder if the author doesn't respect women either. The demeaning way women are presented, not only in dialogue, but also in later chapters when they are supposed to be making a stand, is shameful. A woman runs away and all the bad things that happen when her kidnappers come after her, are blamed on her and she just takes it. Emotional blackmail, anyone? This was abuse. Plain and simple. These women are doormats and twits, who we're told (I’m not convinced) are super smart, strong, and beautiful (cuz they're blond.) gesh? Really? This again. They are beautiful because they are blond? Yeah. Okay.
I’ve seen unattractive blondes and stunning brunettes and redheads. But “ok whatever?”
At the end, when the victims, I mean “dragon-wives”, are supposed to get their comeuppance, the author actually skips the scenes and just refers back. That was the ONLY reason I finished this book. I wanted to see if she redeemed the situation. I didn't get to. Instead I just got to read about the MC making meatloaf and peeing on a stick. The most anticlimactic ending ever. Then, more despicable portrayals of domineering (not at all dominant) men with weak-willed, enabling women. Shameful.

And the sex scenes. Blech. Bile filled my mouth over a few of the descriptives. I can't share them here, but SO nasty, their almost comical. And weird. Truly, grotesquely weird. Shiver.

So nope, never reading this author again. Gave me the creeps. If you're looking for strong resilient heroines and honorable, alpha heroes, you will NOT find them here. “Move along lil doggies. Move along! Nothing to see here”

Different take on vampires.

This is one of those books that I find difficult to review because while I loved the synopsis and it started really well, the idea behind it was interesting and I appreciate its difficult to be truly original when there's just so many similar books out there but this was working well, I had a few issues along the way, I know, I know, when don't I?
Dr Toni Parthen is a blood expert which means she gets called out to lots of weird occult cases but work aside her life is not great, she doesn't have much luck with men in fact she's stopped dating altogether, she also has issues around her father's abandonment back when she was six, he divorced her mother and her and her brother Alex at the same time since she hasn't seen him since.
On her way home after being called out to yet another weird case Toni is involved in a car accident, she's then abducted from the hospital by what she believes to be 'schizoid delusional freaks who appear to have formed a cult'
Toni discovers she has special DNA her blood contains the elusive Peak 8 which means she's one of the few compatible females that can mate and breed with the Varcolac (vampires to us) and that's the reason she's been kidnapped. The Varcolac are exceptionally attractive and while all the men are incredibly hot Toni finds herself inexplicably (in her opinion) attracted to the man who kidnapped her, Jacken, but Jacken is not her list of potential mates.
Toni it appears is more special than she realises and therefore there's more than the Varcolac after her and until she mates she's vulnerable but how can they expect her to mate when firstly the one she's attracted to is not interested plus why would she want to marry into a delusional cult.
I had several problems with this book, first was the women, they seemed intend on putting themselves, their families and everyone else at risk, I just couldn't understand this, they're mated and have children why would they do that...and Toni while she wasn't exactly a TSTL female she seemed to almost have a death wish, running headfirst into danger at any opportunity.
I don't want to make this a spoiler review so I'll just say there were no surprises, people were who we knew they'd be and things turned out as expected, which was a bit disappointing.
This was a nice enough read, annoying women aside, but I can't see myself continuing on with this series.

The Bloodline War
By Tracy Tappan

This series kept coming up on my Facebook feed. It irks me to no end that Facebook puts “suggested pages” into my feed. I follow several authors but that doesn’t mean I want advertisements on my feed…but anyway, I finally looked at the series. There were all kinds of hype comparing it to BDB by J. R. Ward and other famous paranormal authors. I read some of the reviews and purchased the book.

Toni Parthen is abducted by a species that must consume human blood to survive. She carries a gene that only a rare few have which can save the species from extinction because they can only breed with someone who carries her rare gene. After her initial fright, she finds that they aren’t really bad people but abducting people hasn’t endeared them to her.

Later she finds out that there is another species, more akin to demons, who also need humans with her rare gene to breed but these demons, if they ever got ahold of her, would imprison her and use her as a breeding machine. They have no ethics or morals and they are the enemy of the species that now holds her.

Jacken Brun is a warrior who is in charge of abducing Toni and making sure she is safe. Jacken is part demon so he cannot ever breed with anyone but Toni is a special kind of human. Not only can she breed with the vampires but she can breed with Jacken too.

The breeding part really was a little too much for me but I went with it just to read the book. The story of the war between the two species was interesting and I liked the developing plot enough to finish the book and start the second book.

It was the second book in the series that made me stop reading the series. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t good either. The warriors are all macho men and the women are all sweet and nice…and that is the problem. I hate sweet and innocent characters. I like flawed and realistic characters. Also, all of the men are virgins because they can’t have sex unless they mate or something like that. The bad guys can rape and do all kinds of bad things because of their genetic make-up but it was hard to understand. Something about everything seemed too contrived to me from the sexual tension to the personalities of the characters. It might not bother other people but it does me so I couldn’t continue reading it.

I received this book from the author and the Lovers of Paranormal group in exchange for a honest review.

My thoughts: I debated between 2 and 3 stars, but eventually settled on 3. The storyline had no flaws in it. The only problem was the romance was a bit rushed. There needed to be more scenes between the hero and heroine. The secondary characters added to the storyline. I can definitely see a lot of sequels in the future.

The Hero: I felt a little sorry for him. He grew up with an abusive father and I don't think he was ever shown any real love. Even in the community he is in, Roth (the leader) made him promise to be celibate. You can see how lonely he is, but he is so loyal he never breaks his promise. I thought it was so cute how he like old Hollywood movies. The heroine had to pretty much force him to admit he loved her.

The Heroine: She has had a string of disappointing relationships and has all but given up on men. She is drawn to Jacken because of their shared loneliness. I liked how she pursued him and never gave up until he was hers.

The Story: Toni is a doctor(blood expert)who is called to an unusual crime scene. The body of one of two potential kidnappers has been drained of blood. After examining the body, she tells the detectives to get an autopsy done. She leaves and is involved in a car accident that lands her in the hospital.

As she is recovering in the hospital, she is kidnapped. Jacken(the hero) and his fellow Varcolac(vampires) are sent to kidnap her and bring her to the underworld where they live. Toni's blood carries a bloodline that is key to the salvation of their race.

She awakens in a strange world and is taken to see their leader Roth. He explains that she will get to choose from 3 mate choices. She promptly rejects this and wants to go home. Being a doctor, she has a hard time believing any of this. It takes her a long time to let it all sink in.

The rest of the book deals with Toni and Jacken's eventual HEA and the revelation of Tone's hidden parentage.

What would it be like to discover that there’s an entire race of creatures, human but yet not, who live beneath your city? To awaken from a car accident to discover that you’ve been abducted by said creatures and sequestered in their top secret community? That the reason for your abduction is that you carry a unique gene that this race of not-quite-humans needs to breed into their line to ensure their very survival? And then things *really* start to get strange!

The Bloodline War, the first book in The Community Series and author Tracy Tappan’s debut novel, puts a fresh spin on the vampire mythos. The author does a great job introducing and explaining her variation on the classic theme. Toni (aka Dr. Parthen) is a fun, feisty, sarcastic, and snarky heroine, and the rest of the cast of characters are also well-written and believable (although not as fun as the good doctor). You’ll find yourself rooting for the star-crossed lovers, frantically flipping the pages to see if they’ll be able to overcome all the obstacles that stand in their way.

There are (at least) two more books upcoming in this series, thankfully, because I’m very interested in where the storylines go from here and what’s up next for Toni and Jaċken. (The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, so be warned! The odds that you’ll be eagerly awaiting the release of the second book after reading this one are quite high). I’m hoping the author plans to expand the roles of some of the secondary characters in the upcoming books (she mentions in the Author’s Note a couple of characters that will be featured in the second book, but there are several others I’d be interested in reading more about as well).

A great blend of paranormal horror, action/adventure, humor, sweet romance, and a fair bit of spice and sexual tension. Even if you think vampires are overdone, don’t be frightened away – because this is a vampire love story like you’ve never read before.

I received this book for an honest review.
I loved this book!! "The Bloodline War" From the opening chapter, I was hooked and the amazing things is it kept getting better.. The Author, a very talented writer has created this complex and mystical world full of paranormal creatures Vampires, Demons and Dragon Women, with magical enchantments and of course romance... As a huge fan of vampire novels, I fell in love with the dark and dangerous vampires in this story, but was also thrilled that the females, were strong and fierce characters in their own way!!

The storyline centres around a group of Varcolac AKA Vampires! After becoming almost extinct the species has moved to America, trying find a way to increase their population. With the help of their doctor they discover a specific Gene (peak 8) in certain females that allow the Varcolac to procreate with. The Leader of the community a harsh man trying to rebuild his race has a plan...Find females with the correct Gene sequence, Kidnap female and bring to community, find a suitable male Varcolac to mate with and have babies, see saving their race....
Enter Dr Toni Parthen, Dragon Woman and Jacken Brun Varcolac male and leader of the warrior class, who's job it is to protect her from the nasty bad guy demons who will try and capture her until she finds a mate, and there very explosive roles in the community... Is it that easy? Of course not but you will need to read this amazingly brilliant novel and find out.

This story contained action, intrigue, suspense, humour ( laugh out loud moments) and a few steamy, sexy moments. A story with many characters that I would love to read more about.
I highly recommend this book to all paranormal and fantasy fans.

Thank you Ms Tappan You have a new fan..
I cant wait to read the next novel in The Community Series.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! (And boy, can Tracy write a hero!)

The story was so full of twists even from the very first chapter. I thought I knew the direction it was going, (because I have read my fair share of vampire novels), but I was completely wrong. That's what was so refreshing about this book. Also, the mythology surrounding the vampires is unlike any that I have read before, which was also refreshing.

I also like how not just the main characters were featured in the story. I learned about the lives of other minor characters who, hopefully, will get their own books in the series! Each male was SO alpha, and yet so devoted to his woman, family and duty. I also want to know what happens not only with the war itself, but with the singles who are still single at the end of the book!

Jacken is one of my all-time favorite heroes. He is so dark and tortured, and yet it's clear that he has so much good in him that just needs a way to come to the surface.

I would absolutely keep reading this series. Tracy is a very talented writer; not only is the book well-written in a technical sense, but she had me almost chomping at the bit to see what happened next! I found myself limiting the number of pages I read to make the book last longer, but before I knew it, I was done!

I am eagerly awaiting the next installment, and I am now a HUGE Tracy-fan!!!

For a good time, call Tracy Tappan.

I found the Bloodline War in an email from one of the free Kindle book sites. The main reason I actually read it is that my friend's book club was reading it and the reviews were very favorable. I am glad that I did. I started and finished it in one sitting.

The Community is the last alcove of the Varcolac, who live in the natural caves below San Diego. On the verge of extinction, the Varcolac must kidnap and assimilate human women with a certain blood chemistry. Called Dragons, these special women hold the key to successful breeding with the Varcolac. Dr. Toni Parthen is their latest "guest." Her wit and intelligence...and complete disbelief in the situation...lead to some fun dialog.

Jaken Brun, leader of the warrior class, has his hands full with Toni, when she and her fellow Dragons stage a coup. Due to his genetic make-up, Jaken is not allowed to mate, so of course, Tracy and he are immediately and hotly attracted to one another.

If you like fun dialog, interesting characters and some good old fashion action scenes, grab this book. It kept my attention from beginning to end. I sat down, intending to read for an hour and did not stop until I had read the last word. My only issue is that the next book has not come out yet.

Got this book for a first read through Goodreads
The Bloodline War by Tracy Tappan
I really like the way this author wrote this good it was a fantastic tell.
Dr. Toni is a blood analysis and helps special cops investigate unusual deaths. At her last investigation she is in a car accident and gets kidnapped by one group

and battles the other side to hold on to her. Toni is also targeted because she has a special gene in her blood that to different groups want her for. One the dying

out underground people called Varcolac last of a Bloodline we would call vampires. They have kidnapped 8 women and these have found mates and love. Not so

easy for Toni as the one she loves is forbidden to love at all. Toni and Alex chance the way the Varcolac think about life and try to help the race to survive The

other is Fey a group that wants her power because of dragon bloodline. Evil and cruel these are demons who will stop at nothing to get Toni and force her to

breed for them. There is lust , battles, kidnapping and love found for her and her brother Alex. After all is understood but the story does not end here and more

problems will arise in next book I am sure

This is a stand-alone, multi-POV, steamy, paranormal romance. It was well-written, excellently plotted (very complex too), and the pacing was perfect.

I picked this up because of the awards and recognition it's received, and I was NOT disappointed. It's such a different type of vampire story, with just the right amount of ancient history and culture mixed with the modern. The different types of paranormal creatures and world they live in is set and described so well, that she could spin off tons of stories from this series. It doesn't drag out either -- as if this particular plot had to last several books...just to make it a series.

In the beginning, I was a little fearful that the multiple characters and multiple points of views would get confusing, but it didn't. I was lost in the story just from the sample I downloaded, and I didn't look back. I downloaded Book 2 as soon as I finished. I stayed up till the wee hours of the night to finish, and within 2 days, I was done. Can't wait for Book 3!

Oh, and after reading the ebook, she gives you a link to sign up for a free short story.

I highly recommend this book....she's one of my new favorite PNR authors!

I hadn't heard of this book before winning a copy on a goodreads giveaway. Thank Goodness for that! Can't imagine having missed it. So happy I entered this one cause I'm definitely in it for the long haul. When does the next book come out? Original storyline that still has all the power, sex, humor, action and my very much needed HEA for the leading lady....(well so far at least)... So very refreshing to have the beautiful heroine a strong female, I can't stand weak ones that make mistake after mistake! In fact all the women are beautifully written, each unique. And I immediately fell in love with most of the male characters. I love the level of the unmated men's sexual experiences, that was new and enhanced my attraction to them tenfold, if that was possible. Jacken can hold his own against the best of the black dagger brotherhood or any of my favorite lords of the underworld! I'm still swooning over him. And Thomal. And Dev. And etc......Great read! Thank you....and please keep them coming......

I bought this book because of the many readers saying how much like BDB they are. I agree. They are similar but different at the same time.

I love the vampires and the idea of a community, there are many difference between BDB and this series, I suggest people read them to find out what the differences are. I have to say I really struggled with the place names and old history wording, they are quite difficult to get my head around but I didn't let that bother me. I loved Jacken and Toni's sotry, it was fun. I like that this author doesn't dilly dally around with feelings. Does he like me, doesn't he like me. There just instant sexual attraction and 'you are mine'.

It's a great start to a sexy series.

Tracy Tappan is a breath of fresh air. The Bloodline War was an exceptionally great read that held my attention from the first chapter!

Unlike some novels the first chapter grabs your attention and says "shut up, sit down & read. I didn't get bored, there was no putting this book down, I wanted/needed to know what was going to happen next".

If your looking for a book to spend a day lost in this should be your go too, it was simply too yummy to put down. I can't say anymore read it!

But I will also add that it was written well, I found the storyline to have a solid back bone. The book flowed perfectly off the pages!

I kept seeing this series compared to J.R. Ward's "Black Dagger Brotherhood Series" (which I LOVE), so I finally decided to give it a try. As a writer myself, I don't have a lot of time to read for enjoyment, and I don't waste my time on books that don't keep my interest, but as you can tell from my rating, this one did. I really enjoyed it! It was a different twist on the vampire storyline, and quite imaginative. The characters were great, all very distinct, and you really got a good picture of their different personalities. And the guys are HOT, HOT, HOT. I've already purchased the second book and can't wait to read it! (Slow clap Ms. Tappan.)
