Marine Snow: A Deep-Sea Horror Novella

Rate this book
In 1973, Owen Vance was rescued from a drifting cargo ship in the middle of the Pacific.

He was the only man left alive.

At the official inquiry, Owen told them what they needed to the engine failed, the crew succumbed to thirst and despair, and a storm swept eleven men into the sea.

For thirty-eight years, he has lived with the truth.

The MV Nicobar left the coast of Peru carrying thirty-one people across an ocean that had gone strangely empty. No birds. No dolphins. No fish beneath the surface. Then the engine died.

Soon, patches of the ship's steel turned impossibly cold.

A sailor vanished from an empty deck.

The echo sounder began detecting something enormous directly beneath the hull.

Something that had risen from miles below.

As the stranded crew seals itself inside the ship, men continue to disappear. Then voices begin calling from the water—voices belonging to people Owen knows are already dead.

And whatever is beneath the Nicobar is getting better at speaking.

MARINE SNOW is a claustrophobic deep-sea horror novella about isolation, starvation, an ocean stripped of life, and something ancient below the reach of sunlight that has finally come looking for food.

Bone chilling

Sometimes you pick a story that seems to be the usual scary story. Then suddenly it has you by the throat and won't let go. This is one of those to me. There is a level of terror that just creeps up on you. The more you read the more you feel the tense developing. Inside yourself you want to say okay this is creepy and I think I will stop. However, you know you can stop you have to see this to the end. Nightmares be damned I will see this to the end. Now I am glad I did, because good is good no matter how creepy.

I very much enjoyed this novella.
It’s a quiet, creeping horror story.
An implacable being of cold and silence, slowly picking men off their ship, stranded and becalmed, without power in the middle of the vast Pacific. But that’s not the horror of this story . . . it’s something worse . . .

There is an innate fear of the deep sea in all of us. This book does nothing to dispell that fear. It creeps up on you with a dread that is as inevitable as the tide. Wade in but 'ware the sounds beneath the waves.
