"I just want to be happy." ........

A 3.5 star read.

A genuinely entertaining read with characters that are flawed in a very real way. Still, I can't help but feel this is a poor man's Criminal Minds.

What was thought to be a murder mystery was more one guy's monologue on his commitment phobia, including his marriage, divorce, affairs and subsequent relationships. There was too much Brandon and this took away the thrill of the book. And that was disappointing. It could have been a better read.

Nice read

This was a good mystery that kept me turning the pages until the end. The story involves a serial killer who dresses his victims in a wedding gown and poses them in the bathtub. A group of FBI agents known as The White Knights are called in to investigate.

I enjoyed the plot but the characters were what made it happen for me. Jack, Brandon, Zach, and Paige each possessed their own set of skills that combined to make them successful. Together they work to ferret out the guilty party and bring him to justice. Very well written. I recommend to anyone who likes a good whodunit!

Special Agent Brandon Fisher receives a message from his ex-lover, partner, Paige — to suit up and be ready to travel within minutes to Grand Forks, North Dakota. The FBI Team, which comprised of Senior Special Agent Jack Harper, Zachary Miles, and Paige Dawson, have been alerted to a murder that looks like a serial killing. They find the body of a female, Tara Day, in her wedding dress in the bathtub with her wedding ring finger severed and laid out on her dress. She is beautifully made up and looks like she is smiling in her sleep. She was killed by compressive asphyxiation. The killer sits on the victim and their arms and then sits on their solar plexus. Apparently there was another murder with the same MO, exactly the same day one year earlier. Both females lived within minutes of each other, and both were engaged. They both frequented the same bar, were very pretty, and were described as very flirty and needy in having to be in a relationship with a man. Within a week there is another murder with the same MO. The killer is escalating in his time span for the killings. This type of killing definitely seemed to be very personal to the murderer. Who is he or she? What could be so personal that the murderer would kill these young women? Will they find him before he kills another unsuspecting victim? How is he connected to these victims? They seem to know him, or he would not be invited into their homes. The FBI Team work with the local PD for days on uncovering clues into each of the victims lives, interviewing ex-fiancés, friends, colleagues, and their parents. The clock is ticking. Can they stop another murder, when they are having a hard time figuring out who this person is? This is a very fast-paced book. The law enforcement procedures keep the reader glued to the pages. The plot is great filled with consistent mystery. The development of the characters is great as well. The author portrays everyone’s strengths, weaknesses, and faults, so the reader can really relate to them and what they are dealing with in the book. I really enjoyed this book very much and am looking forward to the next book by Carolyn Arnold!!

Although the killer is interesting the FBI team consists of some of the mostg annoying characters ever. Brandon the newbie is just aggravating. He thinks he is a real stud muffin having had an affair with the older beautiful member of his steam. The rest of the team is pretty much a riff on Criminal Minds. It is populated with self centered know it alls. The other law enforcement officers include yet another love interest for Brandon's jilted lover as well as the usual resentful territorial cop. the dialogue is trite and thereare too many info dumps. I slogged through it but wasn't impressed.

Good book

This book was good but wasn’t thrilling. It just didn’t have the page turning excitement in it. Just my opinion though.

I was torn between which way to round my 2.5 stars. For now, I went up since as a mystery isn't wasn't awful and I am coming in on book 4. Why this was the loss leader of the series at zero dollars on Amazon right now I have no idea but I only picked it up because of my read a book in all 50 states challenge and North Dakota is hard. That said, this was a master class on how to make a setting so bland it doesn't matter. Seriously, Arnold could have just not bothered to say where these FBI agents were because the setting was so nonexistent.

Also I hadn't even noticed the author's name when I snagged this for the challenge and was sure it was written by a man until I came to do this review because holy hell the amount of toxic masculinity, misogyny and landing hard on negative homosexual tropes is through the stratosphere.

It was told in three main points of view, Brandon's which was first person, the killer's and Paige's (both third person). Sadly I thought this could have been a much stronger or at least less toxic and misogynistic story if he was gone. I wouldn't have missed him in the least. But this is his series. Oh goodie.

Brandon, a probationary special agent is sent with the big boss, Jack (Mr. cold and emotionless), Paige (the 40 something but hot for her age former lover of Brandon) and Zach (genius) and Nadia (who's back home I think as she's the computer whiz). They're in North Dakota after a second woman has been found in her bathtub in a wedding dress with her ring finger cut off.

So we at least have an interesting serial killer in that aspect. And the police procedural side of it was interesting enough for the first half but then things just go off the rails. Even though Brandon has ‘moved on’ (and is sleeping with another woman in law enforcement back home) he’s a jealous little jackass when Paige goes out on a date with the local detective on the case. So jealous that literally everyone sees it. By the end we’re constantly hearing how he’s Mr. No-Commitment and what a shame it is all women just want to get married.

Yeah not so much dude. But that is the theme of this, all the victims absolutely were man crazy and marriage crazy and the prevailing theory is this is what all women are like (even if Paige weakly protests it) which is why I didn’t think this was written by a woman. Brandon is just gross about it. Paige, for her part, starts sleeping with the detective and allowing it to distract her from her plans. Real professional there. If all the sexual shenanigans were cut out between Brandon, Paige and the detective this thing would have been a novella.

And it loses further points for being lazy when it comes to why all these women would trust this guy so much leading us right into some homophobic plotting. I don’t see me continuing with this series.

Slow Build

This book of the 6-part series was a little slow and I struggled to stay awake while reading bits of it. Compared to the other books so far, this one doesn't contain the intensity and dread to the degree that keeps your attention span. I found my mind wandering a bit and before I knew it, I had fallen asleep. I had to go backwards in my Kindle 3 times because I fell asleep during the auto reading feature which went to the end each time while I was oblivious. Lol. The plot is good, but as in book 2...the character development seems labored and sparse. We do see shades of personalities, but the meat of our main characters seems like an unending cliffhanger which is frustrating at times. Still, there are clever elements such as the killer's identity being mixed up and the explanations of some criminal investigative techniques. Pretty good and I will continue on to book 5.

It’s been exactly a year since Cheryl Bradley was found dead in her bathtub, dressed in a wedding gown with her ring finger severed. With no leads and no more evidence, the case had gone cold. That is, until another young woman is found murdered and posed in the same fashion.

Now, FBI agent Brandon Fisher and his team have been called in to catch the killer before another innocent life is taken. As Brandon begins to pull at every possible loose thread, the idea that the killer’s method of operation is all that connects the women begins to unravel. This serial killer isn’t just out for blood; this is a murderer on a mission.
Unfortunately the players are bad: Criminal Minds braniac meets NCIS lab/IT expert and the two other FBI BAU players dwell on their pitiful love lifes. The side stories waste too much time and is just plain sappy.

I am a huge fan of the show Criminal Minds and this book felt like a detailed episode straight out of that. One of the main things I love about this genre is profiling and behaviour analysis. The author does a stunning job of giving us a realistic look into police procedures & such.

Brandon Fisher is an interesting guy to get to know. The same goes for the rest of the FBI team members - Jack (the leader), Zack (the seniour profiler) & Paige (a very strong female character & also ex lover of Brandon).

Some criminals, especially serial killers keep doing crimes because they have their own justification. From their viewpoint, they are right. Getting to know what drives them is pretty intriguing. Overall, loved this story coz it offers everything I want in a good mystery.

I've read the earlier books in this series. This book could have been more exciting. We get to hear what Brandon is saying and thinking and it's just too much of his thoughts and too little action!

I tried to listen to the book but started thinking about other things and got lost. Eventually I read the last half of the book to get done!

Michael Murphy was the narrator and he made everyone sound crazy! That was also distracting...

The story was good if we cut out Brandon's thoughts...

I've already borrowed two more books in the series on hoopla so I really hope I like the next book more! The Kindle book is free at the moment if you have Kindle unlimited.

I give this book 3.5 stars.

Blue Baby - a review by Rosemary Kenny

FBI trainee Brandon Fisher is close to becoming a full Agent when he's assigned to work with one of his exes, Paige, as part of her team investigating what seems like a resurrected cold case, that could be named The Brides in the Bath Case, if it were an episode of Columbo.
However Carolyn Arnold, the Queen of Night Terrors is far too sophisticated a writer to be trite and tell a trivial tale. Instead Blue Baby, Book 4 in the Brandon Fisher FBI series is a riveting, edge-of -your-seat psychological thriller that you won't want to put down til you've finished it!!

Might as well be an old rerun of Criminal Justice

I gave this story a fair chance. Read thirty chapters. Went to sleep 4 times. At least you could come up with your own names for the BAU. There was no life in the characters. All a bunch of whiney losers. The two many characters are low life skanky slugs. One cheating on his wife the skank pretending she's a decent person. Passing judgment on everyone else while she's ????? a married man. He's just as bad a low life piece of poop. Very drolll, just words on paper. Nothing worth mentioning about them. Even the characters were taken from the TV show. Pretty pathetic.

They are pulled in so many directions yet will it all become clear

Four FBI agents in the trail of a “mercy killer” He thought he was helping make them find happiness well that’s was his excuse Jack the boss was a good leader but something was off, Paige the only woman on the team and Brandons ex and Zach the killer liked to pose his victims in a bathtub in a wedding dress and fully made up his trade mark was he cut off the ring finger? It’s a good mystery with twists and turns and with the stories of grit own personal lives in the mix it makes it a natural story I recommend this book which can lead you to other stories that might come along

Not a fan of this series. The main character, Brandon Fisher, is totally unlikeable. The case gets lost in his thoughts of sleeping with just about every woman he meets and constantly talking about Jack and his smoking. And that's another thing, why is Jack's smoking mentioned so often unless it is going to be a problem for him sometime. Four books in it's just annoying. I purchased all these books so I will read them but it's a struggle. The narrator is horrible too. His voice for Brandon is ok but every other character he puts on such an affectation it's off putting. Sometimes the men's voices sound like women and sometimes the women sound like valley girls. Ugh.

When characters have more than 1 identity, it makes the work for the FBI even more difficult.

This was a serial killer like no other story I have encountered. Carolyn Arnold uses the murders to build more personal details in her characters that make up this FBI BAU unit. It made you question whether the person was really who they say they are. It gave warnings to the dangers of dating in this time. Knock out drugs, gang rape, transgender, homosexuality. Social Media and dating sights that seems so innocent, yet secret snooping happens. Very well written.

FBI mayhem at it's best

I gave this novel 5 stars only because a higher rating isn't an option!
I'm hooked on Arnold,s uncanny ability to create literary excellence in everything she writes.
By the end of the first paragraph I new this was going to be another one of the many great creations skillfully crafted by this author, if you like a good FBI procedural novel you should give this author a look.
Warning don't start a novel by Arnold unless you're planning on staying up late reading, you'll won't want to put her books down!

An interesting story about a serial killer who believes in his wicked mind that he is bringing everlasting happiness to the women he believes are suffering. The plot is well constructed and the leads keep on growing and bringing the agents nearer to the discovery of the killer. The interesting part is that as FBI profilers this group should be able to better read their partners reactions, still all of them have a lot to learn regarding profiling people. Brandon´s sarcastic remarks keep on coming and putting a light edge on the book.

interesting

I’ve no idea why the book was called blue baby. None at all, no babies in this book. No blue bodies either. A good enough plot, a mentally ill person, all other characters seem a bit one dimensional, I liked the main narrator if you can call him that. Note some ‘f’ words and while their is talk of promiscuous relationship’s, it ends at the door.
I’m glad it was a freebie, if I’d paid for this I would have been disappointed as the story telling seems rushed.
I did not feel the suspense or the gripping part that the blurb describes.

I PRE-ORDERED THIS BECAUSE IT SOUNDED LIKE IT WOULD BE GOOD. NOT SO MUCH! WRITING STYLE WAS KIND OF CONFUSING TOO MANY CHARACTER’S THOUGHTS, JUMPS FROM ONE TO ANOTHER. IT DID SHOW THAT YOU CANNOT SEPARATE PERSONAL FROM PROFESSIONAL CAN’T BLURR THOSE LINES. I JUST DID NOT LIKE THAT IT HAD SO MANY PERSONAL PROBLEMS GOING ON, DISTRACTED FROM THE STORYLINE, WITH ALL THAT THE ENDING JUST FADED INTO THE BACKGROUND HAD LACK-LUSTER ENDING. :C

The premise of the "brides" being found dead in a bathtub with their finger severed is intriguing. The story led us on a merry chase of suspects and more killings. The characters are interesting. I haven't read #2,3 in the series so wonder what happened to Paige and Brandon's relationship. Jack is a a character that is hard to get to know or even to like, but the rest of the team is great. I enjoyed this story and have #5,6 in my queue. But obviously I am going to need to find #2 and 3!

Good book

The book was good, though I felt a better balance of the elements would have made it better. Most of the time is spent with the agents speculating about the killer; maybe he is this or that... Ironically, the profilers never actually develop a profile of the killer. Little time is given to the killings, and the ending is very quick. Still a good book, I'd give 3 1/2 to 4 stars.

Couldn't put it down!

This book is well written with the characters being appropriately developed. Although it is part of a series, it can stand alone. The sex was set up and then left to the imagination, for the most part, which is how I prefer it. I would have preferred a little more camaraderie within a team that works so closely together. Murder descriptions were graphic enough to say the reader should be mature.

Intelligent readers, don't waste your time. The actual crime wasn't bad. It was a pretty good plot, but the writing style was not for me. The author spelled out everything, to the point of repeating and summarizing what was just said. The characters were uninteresting and unlikable. I thought the author's name sounded familiar and discovered she writes the Madison Knight series that I found equally boring. I'm putting this author on my Do Not Read List.

Excellent mystery

The interaction among the team is an important factor in this book, the first I have read in a series. Personally I was occasionally put off by the switching of points of view from Brandon, the protagonist, to the perpetrator to third person. The story carried me past that quibble. The depiction of the action was exceptional, and if you like Law & Order, you’ll enjoy this.

The story idea is brilliant. I found the story intriguing, especially the killer’s point of view on life and the role he thinks he plays in the lives of his victims.

The Brandon character is annoying.

The team dynamics was disappointing, they do not gel and tip-toed around each other instead of focussing on the crimes and find the killer. The profilers solved the crime without developing a profile of the killer!

There is a terribly disturbed person murdering women and posing them as brides. There does not seem to be anything to connect these woman--but there must be and Special Agent Brandon Fisher and his team really have to find it before too many more woman are murdered.

Will they find it in time before the next woman is targeted? And how are they being targeted anyway? Nothing is easy in this murder mystery!!

I love all books by Carolyn Arnold. This was another great one about FBI agent Brandon. They are looking for a killer that dresses the victims in a wedding dress and cuts off their ring finger. Paige and Brandon have issues to work out regarding their past relationship. Jack is distracted by a personal matter. Let the hunt begin.

The story was actually good, but I was disappointed with the characters and their behaviour or better, how it was written. Members of such a special FBI team would never behave like Brandon or Paige did. Not as a private person and definately not as an agent. I thought it a bit childish how the story was told and the fact that it is often written from Brandons perspective brings some confusion.
