Previously unknown author [to me:]. Western. Writes very well. It's as good as any Zane Grey or L'amour I've ever read. mac, and Sam, a freed black, leave Independence to go to California even though they know they should have left several weeks earlier. They lead several families in wagon trains. Oxen, in poor shpae to begin with, die, food runs out, and one of the O'Bain's sons dies in a flash flood. In Santa Fe they get new animals and start again. They are attacked by bandits, and Mac, using a big six-gauge loaded with chains, plates, etc, loses his hearing. Five people die. The Apaches save them by killing the Mexicans. Five weeks later, in California, Mac marries Perl, the daughter of the Fraftons. Sam and Ditty marry, and Sam finally sees whales: "Look at 'em, Mac. Biggest damn fish I ever seen!" I think the writer comes to[o:] quickly to the point when Mac asks Ira if he (Mac) can marry Pearl.
