How could you know when you rescue someone that it would lead to a job?
Sloan arrived in town, got a room, bedded down his snowflake Appaloosa, had some dinner, and was on his way back to his room for some much-needed sleep, when he heard a woman scream, “Help!”. Now, most of the time he would walk on by but when he took a peek around the corner he saw that she was not alone, in fact, two men were holding her, and a third one was taunting her. Sloan’s raising would not allow that to happen to anyone, especially a young girl. When the smoke cleared, the girl ran to him, thanking him! Wouldn’t you know it, just then the Marshall comes around the corner, and of course, thinks the worse of things. The young girl, Miranda Platt, runs to the Marshall, and tells him that Sloan had just saved her from being, well you know!!! Looking at the three downed men, the Marshall, harrumphs, and still wanted to take Sloan into custody, charges to come later! Miranda would not hear of it, and she would make sure that her mother knew the Marshall did not take her word for what had happened. The Marshall gives in!!!
Miranda invites Sloan back to her house so that she can introduce him to her mother. He accepts, more to irate the Marshall than anything else. Arriving at the house, Miranda’s mother, Marcella Platt (certainly an attractive widow) hears the whole story, and while Miranda is changing for dinner, she offers Sloan a job as their bodyguard on their trip back to Phoenix. They were to catch the train there and then continue home to New York. With the money “$1,000 for the trip and an additional $1,000 if they run into any gun work.” that she offered Sloan just could not turn her down, so he accepts. They would be leaving the next morning.
And the story begins…
What did I like? This is the second book in the series, I had read the first book some time ago, and by chance, I received the sixth book. While reading it I realized that I had read the first book, I loved both books and decided that I would love to read the books in between. I downloaded books 2-5 and have indeed enjoyed every single one of them. Sloan is one of those men that lived his whole life on the edge. With the acceptance that if he died, he did his way. You would have to say that it was truly the definition of a true fatalist. His only true friend being his snowflake Appaloosa.
What will you like? This book, nor any of the others, lacks action! Sloan seems to turn around and head right into trouble of all kinds. The emotions run high with the women in the storyline, a widow, woman’s maid, governess, and the teenaged daughter, all unfamiliar with the lifestyle of the west, having lived all their lives in the east. The storyline is beautifully written and edited and is certainly amazing. The characters, when I think back through each incident that happens, from the attempted rape through their journey, each one is remarkable and make the storyline pop! Talk about the storyline, it is just short of astounding, but I have found that all the works that I have read of Michaels fall in this category! An excellent read, that I would highly recommend for the whole series. Would definitely be an excellent addition to your Western Library.
