Paul Tobin is the Eisner-award winning, New York Times-bestselling author of Bandette, Colder, and many other comic books and graphic series.

Bandette, drawn by Colleen Coover, was awarded the Eisner Award for Best Digital Series in 2013, 2016, and 2017; and was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award for Graphic Literature in 2016. His original graphic novel I Was the Cat was nominated for an Eisner in 2015.

Yet another one of Hoopla's COVID-19 free borrows that I wouldn't have looked at otherwise.

This was waaaay better than I thought it would be, but I've recently discovered that I'm just not really into the Witcher unless I'm watching the tv show with my kids. I think it's just that my personal excitement over these characters begins and ends with family fun time.

That said, I think that any real fan of Geralt & Co. would really get a kick out of this comic. The writing is good and the plot is solid. I'm not in love with the art, but it fits the story pretty well.


If you love the books/games/show, check this one out.
Recommended for Witcher watchers.

Soooo pretty much it was a replay from Sezon burz, but only the line of the fox lady got expanded. Well, it was really enjoyable and probably especially so if you read it for the first time, unlike me. Good enough to continue!

I know nothing about The Witcher game, but this works well on its own as a fantasy story. Geralt and his dwarven companion board a ship headed downriver and only later find out the party onboard are hunting a vulpess, part fox, part woman, world class illusionist. When they find out, they immediately want off the ship and find out they weren't told the whole truth. Now the vulpess is hunting them and has them soon lost in a swamp full of danger and illusions. These Witcher comics have actually been entertaining enough that I'm curious to check out the game.

The story meanders more than its fair bit in the middle parts, with too much illusion-induced padding and too little development of the plot or characters. How many times do we need someone to dive straight into water and get eaten by some bog monster? There's building up tension, and then there's just repeating yourself.

On the whole it's not terrible, but still rather forgettable in comparison to the better stories in the setting. Make it two and a half stars.

Just like in first volume storyline is far better than not state of the art drawings, but author totally nailed the Witcher character and setting so much that this comic book seems written by Sapkowski himself.

This is a pretty solid Witcher comic that sticks pretty close to the core ideas of the better Witcher stories/novels.



Geralt is still the world-weary, stoic man-with-a-code we've seen before, his sidekick Addario the dwarf does well to act as a foil and keep tongue planted firmly in cheek. We meet a bickering crew of (mostly) contemptible Mortal Men ill-advisedly sailing to "rescue" an abducted elf child in the possession of a "Vulpess" (this is kind of a shape-shifty, illusion-magic-casting Fox Lady, ergo the title) and before long ,and true to form, a reluctant Geralt is all that stands between them and certain destruction and/or madness, etc.





Is it even a spoiler to say that in this Witcher story it turns out to be the Monster who exhibits the most "Humanity" while the greedy and craven quarrelling of the crew of merchants and mercenaries reveals their baser instincts? Well, I'll tag is as such anyway since I suppose there's always the chance this will be at least one person's FIRST Witcher story. I feel it was well played out, however, and I did NOT see the final (happy) twist coming given how grim everything had been up till that point.

The story begins with The Witcher boarding a ship with his companion Adaggio in order to protect the crew as they rescue a royal family’s kidnapped elf daughter. When The Witcher discovers she’s been kidnapped by a Vulpess he deems the mission impossible and suggests they turn around. Of course, the crew hasn’t told The Witcher everything and he then is faced with a vengeful and powerful foe.

“The Vulpesses are part fox, part elf, but entirely female...so pretty hard to fathom. Mystery, whimsy, mischief – they’re at the core their nature.”

Similar to when I reviewed the The Witcher: House of Glass, I have not read The Witcher by Andrzej Sapkowski, seen the TV series The Hexer, or played the video games, so unlike many reviewers I have no comparison. I enjoyed this but I got into the House of Glass much faster and the suspense was much better in that one, in my opinion. It still is a great, creepy tale and I am excited to continue this series.

Mimo że może mniej polubiłam się z tym, co się działo w tym komiksie tak stwierdzam, że są one tak bardzo klimatyczne i pasujące do tego uniwersum, że nie sposób jest się zakochać nawet w takiej formie wiedźmina. Szczególnie jeżeli jest się fanem tego świata. Dużo słowiańskości, dużo demonów, wiedźmińskiego humoru - bardzo fajne.

Фанатство - тяжка доля. Бо рано чи пізно наступає момент, коли продовжуєш любити те, що а-може-ну-його-га? А й справді.

Мені подобається світ "Відьмака", мені дуже подобається те, яке втілення він отримав в ігровій серії (окей, в третій - найбільше), але мені дедалі менше подобається, що з цим світом роблять в коміксах. Власне, майже нічого - так, порохи здувають, ще й не дуже шанобливо. Намагаються зберегти атмосферу, фонтанують алюзіями, вигадують пригоди, от тільки на одних алюзіях та забронзовілих образах Плітка далеко не заїде. Сумніви підступно забрели до моє голови ще у "Домі зі скла", але там ситуацію рятувала історія - така... порівняно сапковська. З "Лисячими дітьми" все набагато гірше - герметичний сюжет створює не саспенс, а нудьгу, самоповторювана пригода, що невтомно гризе себе за хвіст, швидко набуває присмаку самопародії, характерів туди не поклали від слова взагалі, деяких героїв додали задля годиться (нє, я завжди рада приємним персонажкам, але коли автори не знають, куди їх приткнути - це ой), а здатність Геральта співчувати чудовиськам начебто вже обговорювати сенсу нема. Ну і луїзіанські болота поблизу Новіграда - це круто, звісно, але в грі вони якось інакше виглядали. Кароч, колишні сумніви вже остаточно отаборилися й розклали багаття. Їй-бо, у грі середній квест краще прописували, про першоджерело промовчу. І, так, я все ще люблю цей світ, але все менше - беззаперечно.

The fox child, is part of the story in the latest witcher book "Season of Storm". Where they add some, and cut some parts in the book to make a solid ending for this comic. Just like the previews witcher comic I've read I haven't had any liking to the artwork but still if you're into good geralt story I really recommend this.

But for plot convenient you should read the book first before reading this one.

У першому коміксі про відьмака «Дім зі скла» Пол Тобін розповів історію про загадковий будинок із примарами та про його страшну таємницю, яку потрібно розгадати головному герою. Мені подобається, як сценарист підійшов до створення коміксів про Ґеральта, де кожен том містить сюжетну арку, яка не пов’язана з іншими збірками. Тому сміливо можна купувати будь-який том і насолоджуватися історією.

Ті хто читав оригінальні романи Анджея Сапковського можуть помітити схожість назви коміксу «Лисячі діти» з однією історією із книги «Сезон гроз». І це, справді, так, тому декому може здатися, що це окрема історія нічого нового не принесе у враженнях від цього світу. Але змушений заперечити, бо тут ми маємо хорошого художника Джо Куеріо, який вміє створити проникливу атмосферу у відьмацькому світі. Та й сам Пол Тобін підготував сюжетні цікавинки та іншу розв’язку історії.

Через певні обставини, Ґеральт підписав контракт із людьми про захист корабля, який плив річкою в напрямку Новіґраду. Якщо б він знав справжні деталі цього контракту, то ніколи б не підписував його та узагалі тримався б від цих недоумків подалі. А в результаті йому прийдеться захищати бовдурів, злочинців та просто жадібних людей, які викрали дитину лисиці-матері.

Звісно, прості люди не знають міфології та небезпеки світу в якому вони живуть. Навіть пояснення відьмака не допомагають їм зрозуміти усю безвихідь ситуації. Адже лисиця-матір — це не перевертень, не людина, яка може перетворюватися на лицию. Вона древнє міфологічне та магічне створіння, яке срібним мечем не прикатрупиш. Це лисиця із задоволенням грається із розумом жертви, розмиваючи відчуття реальності та створюючи образи в голові смертних, які потрібні їй.

Тому тут тільки одне питання, чи зможуть вибратися із цієї складної ситуації герої. Цей комікс потрібно обов’язково мати в колекції фанам циклу книжок чи ігор. Тут будуть моменти, які вас здивують. Та й загалом іншим, які просто люблять читати цікаві, містичні та незвичні історії 😉

Είναι σπάνιο να βρεις σειρές βασισμένες σε κάποιο franchise που να πιάνουν την ουσία τους και να τη μεταφράζουν σε άλλο μέσο επιτυχημένα. Η συγκεκριμένη σειρά, τόσο σε αυτόν τον τόμο, όσο και στον πρώτο τόμο The Witcher: House of Glass πιάνει άψογα την ατμόσφαιρα και τους χαρακτήρες της σειράς παιχνιδιών στην οποία βασίζεται. Το συγκεκριμένο μάλιστα πλησιάζει αρκετά και στο The Last Wish, το πρώτο από τα βιβλία της σειράς στην οποία στηρίζεται το παιχνίδι.

Με ένα τέτοιο τρενάκι από franchises είναι θαύμα πώς το κόμικ δεν εκτροχιάζεται, πόσο μάλλον το πόσο καλά δουλεύει ως μεταφορά σε άλλο μέσο. Ο κεντρικός χαρακτήρας Geralt είναι πιστός στο ψηφιακό του ανάλογο, αν και εδώ, σε αντίθεση με τον πρώτο τόμο, η αφήγηση θυμίζει λιγότερο quest από το ηλεκτρονικό παιχνίδι και περισσότερο τις ιστορίες του χάρτινου Geralt.

Στο χαρτί μεταφέρεται εξαίσια μία ακόμα ιστορία που ο κακός δεν είναι κακός και δεν υπάρχουν καλοί, δυστυχώς όμως χάνει λίγο κάνοντας μία μικρή κοιλιά στη μέση και με το τέλος . Όμως υπάρχουν αρκετά δουλεμένοι χαρακτήρες, σφιχτή πλοκή και δυναμικό artwork που κρατάει το ενδιαφέρον μέχρι το τέλος

Скажу чесно, це перший том коміксу, до якого я відносився більш серйозно, аніж до того, що йде перед ним.

Купляв перші два томи серії мальописів з різницею у рік, а тепер через рік після купівлі другого тому читаю його. Ну, насправді, я почав читати цей комікс через те, що почав грати у "Відьмак 3: Дикий Гін". Мені настільки зайшов всесвіт, що вже було мало однієї гри. Хоча, сказати чесно, мені її вистачить ще на добрих 100-150 годин ґеймплею. Спокійно. Але ж є ще й книжкове першоджерело... Ну і як тепер це все осягнути?

Ех. Потрапив в кляту павутину "кльових франшиз/фандомів/тайтлів". Що тепер робити? Мабуть розслабитися та отримувати задоволення.

Історія не те щоб оригінальна, але атмосфера у ній є. Саме за це вона мені дуже сподобалась. Хоча малюнок її не те щоб рятує. Він не поганий, як на мене дуже пасує цим персонажам та всесвіту Сапковського. Проте, інколи мене напрягає "анатомічна еквілібристика" художника. Ну от не може людина мати такі кінцівки, ну не може й все тут. Але най буде.

Ah, Geralt. You are really quite a character when written by someone who both understands and respects the character. I've always maintained that the world of 'The Witcher' is at once one of the greatest creations inf modern fantasy, as well as THE most disappointing and underutilised of IP's to boot. Should Netflix have adapted these stories faithfully, then The Witcher TV show would be a roaring success. Henry Cavill wouldn't have walked away in disgust, and The Witcher could come to rival even Harry Potter for the current fantasy crown. But they don't faithfully adapt really good stories like Fox Children (even if the art again fails to truly encompass the breadth and scope of the story). Which is why the Witcher, especially once CDProjektRed release The Witcher 4 (seeing as how they're fully on board the DEI train), will be another terrific IP lost to the modern sands of time. Read Fox Children, children. 4/5

Adapted from a chapter of the Season of Storms book, Fox Children reads like another awesome "side mission" of Geralt of Rivia, this book sent me right back to the world of The Witcher: Wild Hunt, the way Paul Robin writes Geralt is spot on, and I loved all the new companions and the she-beast, the art style is also really cool. I feel relieved this comic book series is being published by Dark Horse, they know their stuff and The Witcher fits like a glove in their catalogue, if you're a fan of the Mignolaverse and similar titles, this is a easy pick for you, don't worry if you never played the game before, easy world to get into.

2.5* It's basically Season of Storms but as a graphic novel, so no wonder I didn't particularly like it. And I'm not sure why I didn't like the art here, because I think the artist is the same as in House of Glass(?), which I really liked.

Якщо перший том коміксів за "Відьмаком" є максимально подібним до перших оповідань Сапковського, другий є буквально адаптацією сюжету з "Сезону гроз". Із певними виправленнями, звісно, бо історія мала читатися й поза контекстом, ще й бути насиченіше екшоновою.

Nice story, great artwork. Geralt with a bunch of others against something they don't know much about, who steals young elves and turns them into what itself is, a Vulpess. Creatures that shapeshift and can create illusions. So Geralt is trying to save a bunch of idiots along the journey while protect innocent creatures as well and himself. A nice adventure overall.

I read Fox Children as the second story in The Witcher Omnibus.

*This will be a spoiler-free review.*

As stated in my review for the first story; House of Glass , this omnibus is my first experience with graphic novels, so I may not be the most qualified to judge their quality in that regard, but I have been following the adventures of Geralt and company for over a decade now via both Sapkowski's novels and CD Projekt Red's games.

In Fox Children we find Geralt and his Dwarven friend, Addario, looking for passage to Novigrad via the river Pontar. The ship they happen to catch a ride on is hiding a dangerous secret.

I thought this was an interesting story. It's a little lighter on action than the usual Witcher escapade, but it takes more of a phycological angle, whilst still maintaining a dark and sinister tone. Again it utilises the trademark morally-grey themes and decisions that Geralt is accustomed to facing, and it applies them to a story featuring a type of being that we haven't seen very much of in the Witcher universe, and I must say that I rather enjoyed it.

• Story: 4/5 - A tidy story that is of a different type to a lot of the others.
• Art: 4/5 - Good quality, featuring the same artist as in the previous story, Joe Querio.
• Colour: 3/5 - Nothing that particularly stands out. Less atmospheric than the previous title.

I shall definitely be continuing through this omnibus, and I look forward to seeing what the rest of these stories contain!

I bought this volume forgetting that I had read the first and was not a big fan. I am glad I did though. This second volume was an improvement. The story felt more cohesive and the art was less distracting. I enjoyed the stoicism of Geralt amidst the troubles around him, and the creatures were cool.

Ah, here we go. This is more in line with my normal opinion of the franchise. So many issues with this one, which is sad because there were some fairly cool ideas happening.
