Trinket’s life is on track to be fabulous...until the moment when her mother screws up yet another magic spell and gets them banished from Earth by a sexy mysterious agent of the A.S.S. (Abnormal and Supernatural Security).
Now she’s in Jagged Grove, a town that doesn’t actually exist, to serve out her sentence by teaching a young witch named Maggie how to be a healer. It could be a piece of cake, except for the fact that Trinket once killed somebody trying to heal them and she vowed to never practice her magic again.Oh, and when she gets there Maggie is dead, and it might be murder.
Now, with the help of a too-sexy werewolf, an elegant vampire and her sweet but unhelpful mother, Trinket has to figure out what happened to Maggie and find a way home before her real life crumbles away to nothing.
Genre: Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Length: 55,000 words
***This is the first novel in the new three-part Jagged Grove serial. It contains cliffhangers!***
The story started out nicely and was able to pull me in. That's about all the positive things I can say about the series.
• very bad editing/writing. The author apparently doesn't know when to use your/you're, which hurts me deeply. Neither did the editor catch this error, which happens throughout the whole series.
• missing words, leftover words from rewriting - another black mark for bad editing.
• the characters all turn out to be incredibly volatile, with an astounding level of immaturity. The back and forth between friendly and hostile nearly gave me whiplash.
• there's no red thread, no real storyline, all that happens just happened because it popped into the authors mind, not because she plotted it.
I could go on and on, but abovesaid should be enough to warn people. If I hadn't read the series on Kindle unlimited, I'd want a refund.
The premise was a bit thin - your mother has to go to a secret island "prison" in another dimension because she used magic in public and you have to go with her because?
I have no idea what is motivating any of the characters. I didn't really like Trinket as she was very wishy-washy.
It also looks like there might be a love triangle - which I hate.
CONVICTED WITCH is the first story in the Jagged Grove Magical Mystery series. Although the first story does end rather abruptly, it was still a full enough story to grab my attention throughout with a different view of "Paranormal Jail" for certain. There was some world building, I expect that but what I had to work beyond was Trinket. She comes across as such a spoiled brat for the majority of this story that I never found myself in her corner and was always waiting for her to get that "aha" moment. Which she didn't, not really.
While I did think CONVICTED WITCH was a good story (I read this story years after it's original release so I don't know what corrections have been made) - but the wrong word used in the wrong meaning took me out of this story's world far too often.
To be clear, I am not a fan of cliffhanger endings (or non-endings). I go out of my way to avoid them unless they slip by me as CONVICTED WITCH did recently. At the ending of this story, in the Author's Note, it is mentioned that the coming stories will have cliffhanger endings. At that moment I sighed and had to make a decision on continuing with the series. The answer surprised me. I'm tempted, and that does surprise me for there were characters and situations to be resolved that I do want to know more about. It's the cliffhanger aspect that has me so-so on whether I'll continue with the series.
I think CONVICTED WITCH is a good Paranormal Cozy Mystery. I liked it, didn't love it, but do want to know what happens to several secondary characters. I believe this is one of those that you simply have to read for yourself to decide. Right now, it is in Kindle Unlimited so it might be your chance to try it out. I'm still deciding on the rest of the series.
I read this title through my Kindle Unlimited subscription.
Witch stories are fun. They're the escapist entertainment of the Fantasy genre. This one had an especially good story with a lot of sprightly, entertaining characters (however, this is the third one in a row that I've read with a slick, charming, overly confident and gorgeous lover-boy...and I'm heartily sick of the stereotype). The big disappointment is that it is a serialized story...you're left hanging in the middle of the tale with a ton of loose ends. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is the only one I've ever read that had the quality to get away with that. I'm retired on a fixed income so I can't afford to buy books like I used to, and nobody ever offers the 2nd or 3rd volumes as freebies. They give out the first one to get you hooked but you have to buy the rest of them...it's OK if the first is a complete story, but I resent it when they only give you part of the story.
A great start to a new series. She hasn't used her power for healing since her last attempt, when the patient died. However a frantic call from her mother has her in a tizz. Her mother has been using power in front of non-magical humans and has been sentenced to an island (full of magical beings) for the rest of her life. As has she! An island in another dimension, a murder, a ghost on the rampage, her unknown father, a hunky cute jailer and learning to use her healing powers are all mixed into a great read with characters that come alive. This is a continuing story, so please be aware.
I can relate to this scenario in my own life. First the mother, who is also a witch is very immature and does exactly what she wants when she wants and this causes the daughter to constantly babysit her. The mother causes another problem in the community using her magic and as the result, the two of them must leave and go to another demention for a year. I enjoyed this mystery. The ending leaves you guessing what will happen next. Fun read, worth reading.
This was a fun and cozy series. I got quite frustrated with some of the editing, 4 sisters / 3 sisters and whether Louise existed or not as an aunt. Trinket was well written as was Jones and Angelo. Bilda was pretty frustrating to read and came accross as a bit bipolar, but Rain and Glade were fun and in the whole I really enjoyed the series. Happy to read more if it appears!
The plot is good, the characters are good, but it ends really abruptly and the next book doesn't seem to start where this one ended. Could use a good proofreader. You're/your, too/to, they're/their/there issues galore. Also some character confusion involving a dead character and a living character that causes momentary disorientation while reading.
Now this storyline is promising, but this book left me unsatisfied. You need the rest of series to really be happy. Right now I have a good foundation, but more questions than answers. And I need a physical description of the heroine witch.
Trinket finds herself transported to another dimension to live against her wishes. Trinket and her mom are witches and have been placed in Jagged Grove to protect the human population. A lot of questions need to be answered and the person who has the answers isn't talking.
I absolutely loved this book, could not put it down. The characters are written to be completely realm and the plot was fabulous. I got another new series to read!
What a great short paranormal short read! I found it to be unique and likable! I did find a couple type-o's and if I had to give any criticisms, I would say the MC is going to need to slow that drinking if she is going to be a healer but really I didn't mind it because I'd do the same thing if I had do . I loved the variety of creatures and the little town reminded me of Halloweentown. I'll definitely be reading on in the series!
Only problem with this book was the abrupt ending. Now I need the next one. But I hope the heroine cuts back on her drinking. Come on now, two bottles of Boones Farm and she is still standing? Can we say she may have a drinking issue?
I picked this book up on a recommendation from a friend. Really wasn't sure what to expect. I was delightfully surprised! It was quite good! There were a few places where I was a little confused, but I think that's the way this book is meant to be as it is part of a series. It definitely left me wanting more!!
The story line isn't bad, but the editing makes it difficult to follow. Be aware that since this is the first in the series, there is very little resolution to the plot. I will not continue the series.
This is my first book to read by this Author and am very excited to read more. She has a great style of writing, and her story us awesome with its twist and plot. Cant wait to get started on book 2 in this series.
