This engaging story is not for horse lovers alone but for all ages and all walks of life who have ever had dreams. It take you on one woman's journey from childhood to old age in a life of joy and passion. You will find her failures and her successes full of inspiration, motivation, laughter and tears.
The story of a keen devotion to an extremely challenging sport that requires incredibly close communication between man and beast. I'm prejudiced in favor of this biography, being an equestrian myself, and must confess a certain envy of her youthful ardor for riding, which I never had in my own youth and do not share at her level now in my 60's. That she was able to successfully raise 3 children and keep and strengthen a 60+ year marriage is a marvel, given her distraction over competition in 100-miles rides and the investment of time, energy and money this exacted.
A very enjoyable and admirable life story from the back of a horse.
Can I give this 6 stars??? Even if you don't love horses, you'll find this book inspirational. If you do love horses, the chapter titled "Pegasus," a story about the Tevis Cup ride (which Julie finished 22 times) will keep you spellbound. Julie's love and passion for horses and endurance riding gave her opportunities to ride around the world, and feel on top of the world. Her graciousness, humbleness, and appreciation of her life shines through in her writing. This book is worth a read, and a re-read. Incidentally, Julie donated all proceeds from this book to the AERC (American Endurance Riding Conference) Trails Committee, and the Western States (Tevis) Trail Foundation Trails Committee. Her stock of printed copies ran out, so you can probably only find this used, for big bucks, on Amazon. Big, borrow, or steal (well, please don't do that) from somebody!
As an enthusiastic hobby rider with a strong interest in endurance and competitive trail riding I couldn't wait to read this account of a woman who got hooked on endurance riding and her 30+ year journey on the back of different horses. I was not disappointed. Granted, Julie Suhr had all the financial resources to make her dream come true, but what shines through most of all is her true passion for horse and sport and her willingness to overcome many obstacles and just keep on going. Inspiring.
