Last year tragedy struck her family, destroying everything she loved. Now she’s trying desperately to pick up the pieces after her brother’s suicide, hiding her wounds behind piercings and a tough, aloof exterior. But she knows she’s fighting a losing battle.
Sawyer Ridley is lost.
After witnessing his teammate’s murder, he’s plagued by nightmares and panic attacks. With the nickname Riddles, Sawyer was always one for a joke, but he can’t find anything to laugh about anymore. He’s devastated, and not even football offers him comfort or solace.
On the outside, Addison and Sawyer have nothing in common. But when they meet in group counseling, their shared grief immediately bonds them. As their relationship grows, the walls they’ve built around themselves begin to come down.
But just as old wounds begin to heal, new, more painful ones emerge.
Can Addison and Sawyer save each other from the grief that threatens to destroy them both?
Amber Garza has had a passion for the written word since she was a child making books out of notebook paper and staples. Her hobbies include reading and singing. Coffee and wine are her drinks of choice (not necessarily in that order). She writes while blaring music, and talks about her characters like they're real people. She lives with her husband and two kids in Folsom, California, which is also home to another Amber Garza.
I wasn't sure about how this started. I didn't feel quite satisfied with how the last book ended, so this one kind of jumped right in but with different characters- which I also wasn't expecting. I wanted to know more about Addison when she was mentioned in the last book, so I was excited she was a main character. Same with Sawyer. I liked how he was the sweet one, I did feel like their relationship happened a bit too quickly based on the content of their issues. It felt like they could have used more time. Then the book kind of floats around for a while. Then the end just comes and slams into you out of almost nowhere. I think we could have used a bit more detail at the end before it concluded. But, as per usual, the epilogue made up for tons of that!
This is my 4th Playing for Keeps book and I have to say, I love that Garza picked up with characters from the last book. We get to check back in with Chloe and Holden, but Sawyer takes center stage. He is dealing with the aftermath of the school shooting by attending a support group. There he connects with Addison, who had lost her brother. Together, they help each other heal and find closure. I really enjoyed the tender moments Sawyer and Addie shared, and for real, the boy is a saint with the patience of Job. He dealt with Addie with love and kindness and understanding, with very few demands. But I have to say, it was all in the epilogue for me. Oh, how I love an epilogue. I NEED that closure and Garza gave it to us two-fold by including Holden and Chloe.
Every time I start to read one of Amber Garza’s books (and I’ve read several), I’m confident that I’m going to enjoy myself and always know that I’m in for a treat and usually some plot twists that blow my mind. For the Save was no exception. It took me beyond enjoyment. It is such a wonderful story and had me hooked right from the beginning. Amber’s Playing for Keeps series is one of her best. Choosing subjects that are not always nice or fun to talk about and sometimes painful, Amber has the ability to weave those subjects into her stories in such a way that they only enhance the reading experience and make the books impossible to put down. I highly recommend Amber Garza’s books for all ages.
Really enjoying this series. The books deal with tough topics in a tactful way. Some people might not agree with how everything turns out, but the theme of leaning on others to help you get through tough times is a truth that can't be denied. I like the depth of the characters and the journey their lives go through.
And now i know why i love this book so much, one of the best books that i read and always will be. This is the second time that i read this book cuz i was just needing a remember that even horrible thing can happen you can keep going. And love can cure anything. Thank you Amber Garza for this beautiful book.
