Overall, the plot was good - the story could have been better though. As a matter-of-fact, it could have received a much higher rating from me - a 3-star - if it wasn't for the way the sex scenes were written. It's hard to pinpoint it exactly, but they didn't work for me. I'm assuming that the author meant the scenes to come across as sexy and romantic, but they were crass to me. It seemed like an adult was writing most of the book, then allowed a horny teenaged couple to write the sex scenes. The use of the two c-words and the p and d-words ruined the reading experience for me as well...which was too bad, since the rest of the story was good. I loved the two-way narrative, and I liked the dynamics between the characters, and the bits of humor. 2.5 stars.
***A gifted copy was provided by the author for my honest review****
This is a really moving story about two people who meet under a unique situation. They didn’t even realize that would end up as step brother and sister until later. Cameron Watson came in to The Washington D.C. National Military Medical Center ICU, hurt due to a bomb blast that took place while he was overseas serving as a member of the armed forces. Milly Hamilton is his nurse and she took really good care of him-she found something about him called to her deep. She didn’t know what but she would just talked to him while he was in his coma about things and she could call him “hot stuff” and just speak from her heart. When he woke up, it was like a dream come true. But when he woke up, he was quickly transferred to rehab and away from her. Now during this time his father had visited and he is this big wig in the Joint Chiefs and he was so nasty to his son-didn’t seem to really care that his son survived while the other 6 men didn’t of the IED blast. Also, Milly’s mother who this senator had been nosing around –not to see her daughter but to make inroads with Cam’s father. You can tell both MC had horrible parents who didn’t care a whit about them, only about themselves and used the MC to do their bidding when it would get them something.
So during this time, Milly and Cam started seeing each other and then the parents ended up getting married and when the MC tell the parents they wanted to see each other- the “parents” put a guilt trip on them about how sinful that would be. Cam was dealing with the stress and guilt from the IED blast so he quits seeing Milly. There was a lot of anger on Milly’s side toward her mother and Cam’s father over how they just take over and make decisions when it’s not their life. I loved the play on the step brother theme when really they aren’t related and they didn’t even grow up together. There is more going on with Cam than what he is letting on. There is a slight twist toward the end. I liked how the story ended the author weaved a masterful story and I hope she continues to write more stories like this. I had even shed a few tears with this story-the HEA at the end was great. Milly and Cam are what I like my MC to be. Milly was a sweet, thoughtful, feisty girl who wanted to protect her man from harm; you have Cam who is a soulful, quiet, wounded man who is grieving for his lost friends well he had me from the moment he opened his eyes. Not to say he isn’t charming and sweet for he is but there is more beneath the surface. This story will be what you look to read after a long day and worth re-reading over and over.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Cameron is a marine, wounded in Baghdad. In a medically induced coma, he hears an angel's voice slowly drawing him back to consciousness, away from painful dreams. The "angel" is his nurse, Milly, who has become slightly enamored of him. Drawn to each other, they have one date, one night of passion before being informed by his father and he mother that they will soon be stepbrother and stepsister. What I like about this story is that unlike so many other "step" stories, they aren't tortured by the supposedly taboo nature of their relationship. Other factors cause bumps in the road however, mainly dealing with the trauma from what happened in Baghdad. This is a really sweet heart-warming romance with two very likable main characters who aren't afraid to fight for their happy ending.
Wow what a great read. This book was wonderfully written. Coming from a military background I found it to be very accurate as well as entertaining. Milly had me in the first few pages, she was just.an amazing girl who an amazing young but wounded marine needed. The way that Cameron eventually opened up and sought out help with the encouragement of Milly was just inspiring. This is a book that I will recomended to my friends. Thank you Ms. Fawkes for a very well written and beautiful love story.
I kept hoping they wouldn't get together once they were actually step siblings. "Icky" is not a good feeling to have when reading a book. The story would've been so much better had he returned to the military for a few years, giving the parents time to divorce. The time apart could've caused that angst I so love reading in a book. Milly and Cameron had great chemistry, but I just couldn't get past the step sibling issue. The ending felt incredibly rushed.
Loved the pace and story line of this book. What turned me off a little was how much Cam acted like he was 12 and not 28. I can't cause my father, no cause my father - everything revolves around his father over his own feelings. Loved Milly tho. She was great and melted my heart. Both have asshole parents, just couldn't overlook how Cam couldn't think for himself.
This book flies by. Easy read really enjoyed it but man do you want to slap sense into Cameron. They are to old to complain they way they do. F'ed up parents or not time to live life.
The story between them was very touching, with poignant lines relating to Cameron's experiences after the war and parental pressure. I'm glad they had a happy ending.
It starts off fairly strong with a nurse and wounded soldier that meet during his recovery and have an instant connection. Throw in some PTSD and manipulative parents, and this had the bones to be interesting.
Sadly, the plot never really climaxes or develops much after the initial third of the book. The nightmares, running, self loathing, and half ass attempts to stand up to the parents became repetitive and didn't carry the story anywhere but in circles.
Then, it just kinda slowly creeps it's way through sex scenes, breakfast making, and meeting the BFF ... STRAIGHT to insta-resolve of all the woes. I mean all it takes is the female mc to say "it's not your fault" and the male mc just forgets that he has LITERALLY cried and curled up into a ball over the source of his PTSD. Same with the relationship... It goes from non-existent -to- roommates -to- marriage HEA with nothing of moment to spur these progressions.
Basically, the storyline is dull... Uneventful... Mediocre. And, the few parts of moment that are there are written in completely bland, flat & emotionless manner. All the problems dissolve at warp speed with little to no action involved in the resolve.
Characters
The male MC isn't attractive. And, it's not because he has PTSD. It's not because he has a panic attack or cries several times.
No! It's because he alternated between boring as hell to a 28-year-old pushover that let his daddy control his every move and emotion. It's because he's supposed to be a Marine, but sounds more like baby kitten.
This father/son relationship was just horrid, and, like with the overall plot, it was anticlimactic, emotionless, and dull. He may eventually stand up to his father, but there's never really any moment where the father is told off or put in his place. There's never any consequences for how the father treated him. There's nothing to prevent me from thinking that the father will still very much control his son .
The female MC had more gumption to her than the male. At least she did tell her narcissistic mom to fuck off. Unfortunately, it felt more like a Pollyanna version of a chest puff to me.
The female MC might've verbally stood up to her mom, but they allowed these people to stay in their lives despite them proving over and over that they only care about themselves and their careers. There's no comeuppance, removal, resolve of the problems in the relationships... ie nothing to make me think these parents won't continue to do nothing but try to control them.
Overall
Mindless dribble to waste a few hours. 2 stars is generous. Recommend for readers that abhor any kind of angst, enjoy Pollyanna outcomes to complicated problems and relationships, and aren't looking for any depth within the plot and characters.
I actually love the taboo of step-siblings. It is a huge weakness of mine. This one was very heart warming, plus some real good steamy parts. *smile* Emma Fawkes done an amazing job.
I had to laugh at Milly. Milly is such a strong headed person and so funny and brave. Milly worked at The Washington D.C. National Military Medical Center in the neuro ICU. Here is was thinking people in coma could not hear what you were saying to them. So she made it a habit to talk to her patients that were in coma. So when Cameron Watson becomes her patient she could not help but flirt with him while he was in coma. You know stuff like “Hi hot stuff”. I just about feel out of my seat when I read that..LOL
Cameron who was 1st Lieutenant in the US Marine Corp and was station in Iraq was in an accident. An IED went off and killing 6 of his men. He survived. Now he could not understand why he could not move or open his eyes. He kept reliving this awful nightmare. But in this dream state he kept hearing this Angels voice, which he was drawn to.
Cameron does not only have to work on his physical but also his emotional health as well. Physical seems a little easy for him to except, but the emotional not so much. He is one to bottle things up because he believes emotion is a sign of weakness and at the moment he is bottling all the guilt, hurt, and anger. He feels like he is to blame for all that has gone wrong. He feels so broken and not worthy of love.
Cameron and Milly hit it off. They have a lot in common. Both have a worthless parent that are not worthy to have such wonderful children. I can only imagine the shock on Cameron and Milly’s face when their parents announced they were dating and getting married and for Cameron and Milly to end this relationship. What will they do? They feel deeply for each other. Will they meet their selfish worthless parents demands to end the relationship?
I really enjoyed this book. I truly love the storyline she went with in this book.

I am in love with this highly emotional tale of Cameron and his Milly. Cameron is a marine who is fighting to become physically, mentally, and emotionally whole following tragic events which occurred during his last deployment to Iraq, and he meets Milly while she is serving as his ICU nurse. The two share instant chemistry, and quickly fall for each other. Cameron is haunted by the events that led to his injury and feeling damaged. However, Milly is determined to show Cameron that he isn't as broken as he believes himself to be and to love him back to a place of potency. Their developing relationship is affected by their interactions with their mutually cold and self serving parents and by the marriage which occurs between the two; yet ultimately, Cameron and Milly find their set place in each other.
This story is beautifully written, and the storyline and characters are well crafted and completely fleshed out. They are developed to show both the strengths and the weaknesses found in true humans rather than the more static and one dimensional cast sometimes contained in books. The words on the page pull you in at the beginning, and they don't let you go even once the story ends. I highly recommend this book to all readers, not just to lovers of stepbrother romance!
An arc of this book was received from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This was a great story. From the moment you meet Milly and her giving heart to Cameron her super hero. There are several events that keep pulling you in and connecting to the characters. You will end up with a little book hangover. I know I didn't want this book to end. Would read again as well as other stories by this author. This was a full story with no cliffhangers. Overview. Millie works in the icu area at the military hospital in Washington D.C. a new patient comes in and is assigned to her. She is drawn to the soldier named Cameron who is in a coma. She stops by and talks to him a lot even though he can't respond. Cameron is in a coma from a IED explosion in Iraq. He hears an angel talking to him as he floats in and out. When the doctors wing him off the meds, he decides to respond to the angel, who has blond hair and blue eyes. The two developed a bond and later start dating. But all comes to a stop when their parents announce they are getting married. Even though they are both 28, the parents forbid them to see each other since it will cause public issues. But Millie is not going to give up, and she encourages Cameron to fight not just for his health but also for them.
a marine in a coma is her perfect person to unload her heart to but it's after he wakes up and lets on he heard every word that their attraction starts to build. the pressure his father is putting on him has him battling hard to get back on his feet and back to work. nothing goes easy but it's when his ICU nurse steps in that he gets an extra drive to do better, their relationship blossoms. that is until his father (a high ranking military man) and her mother (a state senator) drop a huge bomb on the both of them and demand they stop seeing each other. on top of all of this he's still battling PTSD, it isn't a good combination and he caves to the pressure and leaves her. luckily his nurse isn't such a pushover and fights for their love, standing up to her career driven mother and pointing out some facts to him. Will he be able to make the right choice? or will he keep his fathers words close to his heart? they didn't start as step siblings and you can see how all the relations work in this books. it's a nice read.
Milly and Cameron have an immediate connection. He is in a coma when they first meet and she as his nurse finds herself spending more and more time talking to him. They are so sweet together. He has had a severe brain injury and is struggling to recover and decide his future.
I love that the author alternates the point of view between the characters. It really let's you get close to both characters and understand their perspectives.
Their parents are a piece of work and the villains of the story. They are so incredibly selfish. They make a perfect couple. Luckily they have friends and Milly's sister to support their relationship.
I don't read a lot of the stepbrother taboo stories because they tend to just focus on a sexual relationship. This story encompasses all the parts of a relationship and is a truly satisfying read.
Wow just wow!! I started this book not knowing what is was about. All I knew was the title never before have I read from this author. So I opened my kindle app and started to read it. I was immediately pulled in with the story and enjoyed every bit of it. It was then I realized it was a "step brother" book and had a military man in in. Also this is only the 2nd book I've read about the military. I enjoyed it very much! I do not like to give spoilers but I will say sexy time was good not so much as make you wanna wiggle around but it was good you like you could see that happening. I would recommend this book to my friends a a good quick read.
I was given an ARC for my honest opinion and honest it is!!!
Milly is a nurse whose mother is a senator. Milly's mom is controlling and selfish. Cameron is a marine whose father is in a joint chief of staff position. His dad like Milly's mom is controlling.
Milly meets Cameron when he is brought into the ICU where she is charged to care for him. While he is in a coma, she begins to talk to him as if he was able to speak back. When he comes to, everything seems to change.
Will the two become friends or more? Will their parents keep them apart? I mean who wouldn't want a hot soldier?
I'm not one to give the story away but this is a great read. The author tries to take you into someone who is struggling with PTSD, controlling parents, find love and friendship. I guess you can my heart is warm when it comes to military romance novels.
ARC provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.
Finally, a stepbrother romance that I didn’t find totally obnoxious. Most of this type of book that I’ve read lately seem to mention, in about every other paragraph, the step-sibling relationship to the point that it becomes nauseating.
The books blurb is accurate. Milly and Cameron first meet when his is in ICU where she works as a nurse. Cameron has been injured in the line of duty. Both Milly and Cameron have issues with their parents; he with his father, her with her mother. I wanted to slap both parents as I read this story.
I liked that this story was told with alternating POVs. I look forward to reading more books by this author.

This is the first book I have read by Emma Fawkes, and it definitely won't be the last! In this book we have Milly, her mom the state senator, Cameron the Marine and his high ranking military father. Milly and Cameron meet in the ICU, where Milly is a nurse and Cameron, the patient, injured in an explosion overseas.
There is some drama between Milly and her mom, and some deep seeded issues between Cameron and his dad. I wanted to hurt her mom and his dad! They are freaking ruthless and egotistical SOB's!
I don't give spoilers, but I will say, this is one of the best stepbrother books I have read! Great job Emma!!
I was given an ARC for a honest review. I loved this book! I am very partial to Stepbrother romances, the forbidden just adds to the excitement if you ask me. This is by far one of the best Stepbrother books I have read so far. The storyline was unique and I had my poms poms out cheering for Millie and Cameron from the moment they were introduced. Besides I am a sucker for a military man, who doesn't like a man in uniform? Cameron was the perfect combination of sweet and pure sex appeal. Millie put Florence Nightingale to shame with nursing Cameron back to health. A must read for anyone who loves Stepbrother romances with well developed characters without the cheesy story lines.
Gifted a copy for review This was an amazing story that I just couldn’t put down. The title leads you to believe that there is some kinky stuff going on but when you read and get to the real story it is so beautiful. The traumas of a marine that occurs often in the realm of war, but lets the reader have insight that they wouldn’t normally have. The love story was so beautiful and attests to what real love of a person is no matter their hardship. Family can also the biggest problem you will ever have when trying to recover from an illness as well as start your life over and these two handle it pretty well. I can’t wait to read other works by this wonderful author.
