Over the years she has become the ultimate heroine and continues to be an inspiration to women of all ages around the world." Deidre Hall, MARLENA EVANS, Days of our Lives
About the age of six I've watched soaps or in my household "the stories" regularly. Just like many fans it was passed to me from the women in my family as we watched the CBS soaps. Entering my teens, I found the NBC soap Days of our Lives in late-1990s and at the height of its popularity with headwriter James Reilly helming. I was instantly hooked by the show's storytelling and its shining stars and fire-breathing-hellcat characters in Alison Sweeney's Samantha "Sami" Brady and Eileen Davidson's protrayal of Kristen Blake Dimera and her multiple personalities; my favorite supercouple in Bo and Hope played by Peter Reckell and Kristian Alfonso. Once I became a fan, I had to read the history and started watching all the older storylines via social media became hooked by the colorful and guilty pleasure characters.
Days of Our Lives 50 Years highlights history of Salemites first family The Hortons lead by the town's patriarch and matriarch Tom and Alice Horton and their five children: Tommy, Addie, Mickey, Bill and Marie. The 1980s gave us the blue collar, tight knit Bradys. The organized crime families in The Dimeras and Kiriakies clans to name a few who have given The Bradys and The Hortons decades worth of turmoil, conflict and problems. In the 368 page book, you're taken down memory lane with the best adventures (Jungle Madness, Cruise of Deception, Three Prisms), supercouples (Bill/Laura, Bo/Hope, Roman/Marlena, Patch/Kayla, John/Marlena, EJ/Sami) among the most popular, storylines (Marlena's possession, The Salem Strangler, The Salem Stalker), heartbreaking moments (Zach's death and Isabella Black loses her battle to cancer), and wedding interruptions (Let's say Sami and Kristen never fails to disappoint) and much more.
The coffee table book has beautiful photographs from black and white to colored photos with quotes from those who help create the magic behind the scenes and the actors who bring the characters to life on screen. This book is an excellent get for any old school and new school Days fan whether you're getting it for yourself or as a gift for someone else. Great book recapping of one television's greatest long running soap operas.
I have been watching Days for about 10 years now, my mom has watched it since the eighties, many members of my family have been viewers of the show for years. When my dad ordered this book for us, my mom and I were thrilled! Wikipedia is great for helping us connect the dots, but it doesn't have everything. This book is wonderful to read for new or old viewers alike. I knew everything that has happened in the last decade and anything I'd learned from my mom or the Internet, but I was no expert. I was worried the book would be confusing and wouldn't offer much more than a website like Soap Digest; But I was pleasantly surprised! I feel like quite the expert after reading this book! I wasn't able to digest all of the information I learned, but the next time I'm confused, I will open up this book and find my answer! My mom loves reading about her favorite characters and also got emotional reading about the death of Bo, Zack, and Isabella. The best experience I had with this book was showing my 85 year old great grandma. She is in assisted living now and I took the book with me to show her. She watched when the show was just beginning. She now has problems with her memory. Once we were a few pages in there were some photos from the beginning of the show, she pointed out people, saying she knew them. She talked about her black and white TV and her memories of watching "her stories." She made sure to point out Alice and Tom through out the book, even when Alice was much older, saying she knew her! She forgot that it was a show a few times, asking or saying things like, "How did they take so many pictures?" And "This could be a movie!" After seeing a picture of Maggie from the begging of the show and one from 40 years later, she couldn't believe she aged so much! We flipped through the book, which mostly consist of her debating the fashion choices and declaring when a picture was good. It was fun and I would explain photos to her and she would talk about how expensive a specific wedding dress must have been. No matter how drama filled the show may get, the core of the show is family. To update, my best friend and I read through the book and now she’s a fan of the show!
This was just a bit of light, fun, fluffy reading. As a fan of this show for a number of years I couldn't resist picking it up when I saw it in the library. It was fascinating to see how long the show had been going on for and how some of the original cast are still there!!! Some still even look the same. My favourites Bo and Hope are still there I think. A must look at for anyone who is or was a fan.
A fun stroll back in time. I just read the previously published book from the 35 years. This just complemented the story of this series i have watched since it began albeit on and off through the years. I had forgotten so many of the characters and wondered about others-Liz Chandler and her "Tonight we Celebrate our live"
It did not speak to the actor who now plays Roman originally being the character of Chris Cosacheck. Who owner a bar. Then became a lawyer. But that was long long ago- what happened to that character? And shat happened to Don Craig and Liz Chandler and Neil Curtiss?
The Anniversary edition - “Days of our Lives 50 Years” will be a real treat for all the fans of TV show that were growing up with this hugely popular series through its long history.
And though there were several books in the past that were released with the same goal, seems this newest one made by Greg Meng managed to do the best job so far - presenting the whole history of TV show in pictures, not focusing on particular period which was the biggest remark for all the previous editions.
Starting from the oldest black-and-white photos to the newest pictures, “Days of our Lives 50 Years” manages to confirm the sentence from its advertising - an in-depth photographic journey of the longest-running scripted program in NBC's history.
Therefore, if you consider yourself a DOOL fan, look no further - this is a kind of book you would like to have on your shelf, enabling you to preserve the part of your life within the covers of this nicely made edition.
Loved it! Beautifully done. Lots of pictures and insight into the characters and story lines from the last 50 years. I was reminded of story lines I had forgotten and was told of stories of favorite characters from before I started watching the show. It was awesome to see some story lines from when I was very young, that I remembered seeing when my mom watched the show. I had no clue that Hope's step-mom is also her sister, which explains why she calls her by her first name.-- This is just one of the many insights that all Days fans should know.
A great (but not entirely exhaustive) look back at the long-running soap opera. DOOL was a one-time obsession of mine--a shared habit that my mother and I enjoyed--and now I only peep an episode or two when I'm home sick or on vacation. What's funny is that so many of the characters from my childhood are still around and still played by the same actors. It's oddly comforting in a way. I'm sure that's why soaps have lasted as long as they have, even if the genre is on the decline.
For fans of this beloved soap opera, this is definitely a collectors item I'm sure gonna cherish! I've been a fan of this soap for 23/24 years now, and the stories and events that happen in this show I feel, like it's happening to my family and friends. I grew up with these sets of characters and so I feel like I know them and their stories and struggles.
My mom has been watching this show ever since before I was born. I have been paying attention to it on some level since I arrived! Great book celebrating the shows 50th year, lots of memories and fun storylines over the years.
