Just when I think that this series couldn’t possibly get any better, my pre-order of SHADOWS AT MIDNIGHT shows up on my Kindle. This was an installment of extremes; I’m talking maximum horrors, unbreakable romance, and mega revelations. The Padma story arc was pretty thrilling on its own, but Amanda Bonilla lobbed in so many extras that no matter what you’ve been craving more of, you’ll be one satisfied SHAEDE ASSASSIN customer.

Darian’s heinie has taken a beating for the bulk of the past four novels, and in this latest addition she gets to battle the madness that is the Realm of Illusion. Then it’s Xander’s turn. Ty, Asher, Julian, Myles & Louella get to experience it up close and personal as well during their rescue mission. The end product was some grade-A, dark Urban Fantasy coupled with imaginative world-building, and action that extended beyond the physical.

Bonilla has been sending her readers on a merry chase for answers ever since Ty’s character was introduced, and although she hasn’t kept us completely clueless, she hasn’t exactly been generous with the dets either. Well, the beans finally get spilled! Not completely of course, however we learn more about the Synod, Darian’s ring, and exactly how far-reaching Ty’s powers really are. This alone had me making room for this book on my keeper shelf.

SHAEDE ASSASSIN fans have witnessed Darian at her worst, and at her best, but in this installment she was kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place. On one side she has the family that she’s longed for all of her life while as on the other she has a bond that trumps time & space, and it’s starting to look like she can’t have both. But, then after that cliffhanger the choice may have been taken away from her altogether. Being left in limbo until #6 is going to KILL ME.

By the end of SHADOWS AT MIDNIGHT you’ll be seriously considering selling your soul to Amanda Bonilla for a taste of what’s to come.

Amanda Bonilla doesn’t pull back on her punches in the latest installment to the Shaede Assassin series. Picking up where the last book left off, Darian is in the hands of Padma after having killed off her son. She endures the worst torture possible, both of the physical and mental. Just as she reaches her breaking point, she is saved by Tyler.

But at what price? Now Darian wants to return to help and get Xander out but with the tricks Padma has put up for them, it may be impossible. SHADOWS AT MIDNIGHT is definitely the most action-packed and tightly-written of the books. Rife with thrills and chills, this book might actually be my favorite in the series so far. Darian is stronger than ever and the lengths she will go through to help her friend are amazing.

This time, the villain is bigger and badder, making the stakes that much more higher and more thrilling. Even as Bonilla continues to challenge her characters, they are getting better and as a result, the more multi-faceted they become.

I was really impressed by Bonilla’s writing on this one. Each scene wastes no time in pushing the book forward and each scene is better than the last. If the Shaede Assassin series sounds interesting to you, I would suggest reading the series in order. The author doesn’t spend too much time catching up new readers in this book so I think it’s best to start at the beginning. That’s where you’ll catch a glimpse of Darian before she grows into the person she is in this book.

Darian is back and better than ever! SHADOWS AT MIDNIGHT is everything readers have been waiting for!

I feel so many things right now. Angry. Sad. Frustrated.

Don't get me wrong. I loved this book. I fell back into the series like I never left. It moved so quickly and effortlessly, I blew through the pages. I fell in love with the characters all over again. And it all blew up at the 97% mark. Blew. Up. Hence ...the feelings.

The beginning of the book drew me in right away. Darian is in the clutches of the evil Padma. She is being brutally tortured, both mentally and physically. Amanda Bonilla does a great job juxtaposing the horrors with Darian's fond memories of Tyler. The flashbacks helped bring back how much I have longed for these two to have a happy ending. And it makes their reunion all the more sweet when it finally happens.

You know what else happens? That apology from Tyler I wanted so much in the last book. There's nothing like abject torture to bring priorities into focus, and when these two reunite, all the petty stuff is put aside. Their love is undeniable. Which should have been a warning that it was all going to go to hell. That and the fact that Tyler is twitchy and weird. But I digress.

I loved rolling around in their proclamations of love and devotion. I loved being reminded of the great chemistry between Darian and Rafe --and with Asher. These characters have such life to them. Their relationships have so much feeling. And then there is Xander. He makes the ultimate sacrifice for Darian. His feelings for her are more profound than I've given him credit for. There's so much happening with him and his relationship with Darian is so complex. It's getting harder not to like him.

It's all so engaging. The writing is so good! Then, BOOM. The ending. You'll notice none of those emotions I listed at the beginning of this review were good ones. I know there has to be conflict to continue the series, but (*rattles cage*) ... I can't make coherent words to express how I feel. I'll read the next book, absolutely, but I am to the point where I am needing a resolution, at least on the Ty and Darian front.. It's not that I want the books to be over, but I also don't want to feel this kind of frustration either.

So bottom line... I am glad I read the book. I still love these characters and this series and I do recommend it for fans of urban fantasy. But be prepared for a big cliffhanger and an array of emotions before you get to the last page.

I can't even begin to express the amount and variety of emotions that SHADOWS AT MIDNIGHT brought out in me. Have the tissues handy, make sure to keep sharp objects out of reach, and go to the bathroom before you start reading because with the amount of action going on you won't want to put SHADOWS AT MIDNIGHT down.

Book four, AGAINST THE DAWN, left Darian kidnapped and on her way to face the consequences of killing Azriel. The first few chapters of SHADOWS OF MIDNIGHT are really dark so be prepared. When Darian is released from the Rakshasa Queen, she jumps right back into danger to save Xander. I really loved that Asher was part of her team. He is one of my favorite secondary characters and I love the connection that they have and the way that they work together. I was a bit sad that my other fave secondary character, Rafe, was left out of the action this round.

If you're a Tyler fan, get ready for a book FILLED with him and information about him. I for one have had so many questions about him and the ring that he gave Darian. Not only do we get answers, we see a different side of him. I have not yet decided if I like that other side, but I sure enjoyed watching everything unfold. Now if you're a Xander fan, you might fall even more in love with him in SHADOWS AT MIDNIGHT. He makes a huge sacrifice to save Darian and I for one felt the love he has for her shining through every decision he made in book five. In past books I could never really tell if his feelings were real or if he was just chasing her because she didn't give into him like others would have. I have no doubts now that he is truly in love with her.

The ending of SHADOWS AT MIDNIGHT really throws out a curve ball and left me with a LOT of questions. Get ready for a cliff hanger that leaves you with a deep need to get your hands on the next book and maybe make you want to shake the author a little to find out what the heck is going on.

~ Book provided by Amanda Bonilla in exchange for my honest opinion. Thank you!

My first thought - or should I say cry out - after I finished Shadows At Midnight was: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Why would you do that, Amanda?! That is soooo mean of you. I can't believe you did that. My poor, poor feelings.

If you haven't guessed it so far - yes, Shadows At Midnight ends with such a mean cliffhanger. Just when you think life couldn't get any worse for Darian and Tyler, BAMM! This even worse thing happens. No, I won't tell you what "the thing" is. I will just tell you that it was mean and I want to read the next book immediately, but it's not out yet. *crying* I feel the need to hide in a corner and rock back and worth while saying over and over again: This can't be happening.

Ok, I'm calm now. Let's move on from that cliffhanger and start from the beginning.

Shadows at Midnight is just the second book of the series I read and while I was kind of confused when I read Against The Dawn, I had a much better grip about what was happening in Shadows At Midnight. And now I'm so sure I have to read the first three books of the series as well.

Shadows at Midnight started right of after where Against The Dawn ended. Darian is getting tortured and it hurt my little fragile heart so much. I felt so much for what Darian had to endure. I liked how Amanda Bonilla lessened the dark torture theme a little bit by injecting some harmless scenes about the beginnings of Darian's and Tyler's relationship.

Darian's and Tyler's relationship. Damn, it's messy, but so cute at the same time. I want them to finally have a happily ever after without other people constantly messing things up for them. One big thing I liked about Tyler in this book: He finally comes clean on some stuff, not all stuff, but hey, it's a beginning at least.

And poor Xander. He makes such a big sacrifice, but he's still a jerk though - at least in my opinion. I hope he finally stops pining for Darian. Get yourself someone else!

This book had so many feels. I can't even describe it. I need the next one know.

The one thing I'm sad about though was that Shadows at Midnight was rather short. Only around 180 pages. :(

Mon avis en Français

My English review

I love the Shaede Assassin series since I discovered it and each volume really carried me away. When the publishing house decided not to continue the series when we had so many questions left, I admit that I was really sad. But I recovered quickly enough when I learned that Amanda would try to publish her story herself. Admittedly, the adventures of Darian are always full of ideas and originality. Also, I was curious to know where her heart was really going to turn to.

The story starts out quite quickly with a time of terrible torture when Darian has to face the wrath of Padma who wants to make her pay for killing her son. It’s pretty horrible to see that the woman has an undeniable talent for combining physical but also mental torture! So when Tyler rescues her, leaving Xander instead, our heroine is determined to bring her friend home. But even helped by her friends and allies, it will be very difficult for our heroes to break the king Shaede free and they will all have to deal with the illusions that destabilize them completely. But Darian will have to manage the consequences of the torture either against her or on Xander, but also everything that is related to Tyler and this seems very complicated. Indeed, the Sinod is after them, and this time it could very difficult for our duo to stay safe whatever the Jinn can say.

I loved this novel once again but I admit that I was really carried away as soon as Darian managed her problems regarding Tyler and Xander. It was very interesting to finally understand what the ring meant for the young woman and to see what the Jinn had concealed until then. I admit that a lot of events are going on in this novel and we are carried away by the chapters and we see our heroine dealing with the problems arising. Of course, we still have many questions and even some new ones but I loved to know the answers to some of the long-awaited.

So I spent a great time again and I really hope the author will continue her series. The ideas are always excellent and I still enjoy the pen of the author.

*My Thoughts*

Shadows at Midnight is the FIFTH novel in the Shaede Assassin by Amanda Bonilla. If you haven't yet read this series, why not? I dare say that this series is one of the most underrated series that I have come to love dearly. I love the main character Darian. Darian is not only an assassin, but she is also the Guardian of the Faery Realm. Darian is cocky with reasons. She once had an almost perfect record of finishing missions without getting herself killed in the process. Darian once thought she was the last Shaede, one who is made of shadows and smoke, in the world, that since has been proven wrong.

Let me start by saying how much I love this series... I could read it over and over and not get bored....it truly in the top ten of my all time fave series. But Lets get back to Shadows at Midnight. After Dorian is kidnapped and left in the clutches of a psychotic b**ch, Xander does a noble thing and sacrifices himself for her but of course, our fave assassin can't let it lie and along with TY, Asher and the rest of her team, they set off the rescue Xander before his x's illusions break the king's mind.

I'm not gonna spoil anything for those who have yet to read but I loved the way the story developed and the build yup to the finale page will leave you screaming at your paperback or kindle (exactly like I did at 1am!) Full of twist and turns and exciting word building, Shadows at Midnight was so worth the wait ...and I look forward to reading the next book as I always do with Amanda Bonilla's works...

The Shaede Series is a must read for anyone who wants a little something extra from the supernatural stories and is one that you really must read! I insist :-)

Well, this one was full of drama. I hated what happened to Darian at the start. Not much better was what happened in the aftermath, but that was nothing compared what happened to Darian at the end. I don't know what to think, but either way it can't be good.

Okay, the story was actually just fine but I've looked everywhere and can't find any updated information indicating that a sixth book is coming. If it is, I apologize for my two-star rating and will increase the stars. If this is in fact the last book in the series, I stand by my low rating and add a WTH?! Instead of resolving all the myriad problems in the story as the author has done repeatedly in her other books, she chose the biggest, emptiest fantasy trope to make them all go away. It was so dissatisfying that I was certain another book was imminent but I can't find evidence to that at all. What a tragic disappointment.

HOLY FUCK, HOLY FUCK, HOLY FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!
WHY, WHY, WHYYYYYYYYYYYY????????

I read this book in two days without having time even for breathing because of classes and internship just for you to know how great it was!

This series is one of my UF favorites and Amanda didn't disappoint with this sequel.. just keeps getting better and better!

Fast pacing, so many feeeeeeeeeeeeels, and an ending that will break your heart!

I can't say who is better for Darian's life, because sometimes just love is not what you need... and in the end, to me, it doesn't even matter because I AM TEAM RAIF ALL THE WAY!

RAIF I LOVE YOU!

What. The. F*ck. This is a series that is trying to kill me with its drama and cliffhangers. I was surprised that the whole situation with Padma was resolved so quickly. But was that the meat of the issue? Of course not. The drama with Xander vs Tyler started up again. I felt like it dragged out a little longer than it should have, though we did get some answers. I might have given this another star, if not for the FREAKING ENDING!!! While it pretty much guarantees that I'll read the next book (and there better goddamn be one), I kind of felt like it was a cheat. Because really? REALLY? Things were starting to go kind of well! AAARRRGGG!!!

After the cliff hanger we were left on with book 4 I couldn't wait for this book. It didn't disappoint it was fast-paced and action filled. Ty get more and more mysterious in this book and I feel as though we get to know more about Xander in this book, his inter-emotions. The romance in this book is as good as ever, she seems to have made her mind up who she wants (not I agree with her choice...but!!)however choices always have consequences!
We get another heart-stopping ending to this book, it has got me imagining so many things that could happen in the next book. So want book six it can't come fast enough.

Loved, loved, loved it! This is one of my favourite series and I've been eagerly waiting for this book to come out so that I could catch up with Darian, Tyler, Raif and Xander. And I was not disappointed. It was dark at times, yet gripping, adrenaline-pumping and heart-stopping. Darian is so tough, yet so human in that all she wants is to love and protect her 'family'. I love Tyler, so I was delighted that we see so much of him and learn more about his powers and Darian's ring. And what an ending! Can't wait for the next instalment!

I absolutely love this series. Amanda Bonilla is a great author and I am so glad she decided to continue the Shaede Assassin series. The adventures in Goblin Valley had me on the edge of my seat. Padma, the Rakshasa queen, was a hard core sadist! Darian is such a strong heroine and I love her relationship with Tyler. We learned a lot about Tyler in this book and the end of the book will have you wishing for the next installment. I also have a soft spot for Xander and Raif. I highly recommend this book!

This book kept me reading. Each night, I couldn't wait to read more and even wanted to stay up later to keep going.

We start the book with Darian imprisoned and tortured because of someone she killed, for Xander. This was a tough moment to get through. The torture that she endured. Wow. This would truly be terrible to come back from. But there's one special person in her life that can help with his magic and their bond.

When Xander trades himself for Darian's freedom and his part in the killing, Darian can't take it. She pulls a team together and goes to get him. Along the way, Darian starts to see more of Tyler's power and what he can do. He could be frightful if she didn't know him so well.

Darian doesn't get much down time after the terrible labyrinth of traps and illusions. Xander needs help returning to the real world after his torture. And the Synod is present...

Darian has been one who's not had any friends or anyone close enough to be like family in centuries. She's now grown close to those around her. She's always there to help them any way she can. Darian and Tyler's bond grows stronger and they are closer and closer. But there's pieces that Tyler's still not ready to share just yet, which Darian fears could mean danger for her or them.

I liked seeing Tyler in action more here. And we do finally get to learn pieces about Tyler and the jinn. I loved Tyler but I wasn't sure he was always thinking to protect Darian in the first books. He seemed bossy and territorial. But now, he's more on the protective and loving side. I feel their relationship has grown into more and they are great together. (And I'm glad Darian has made a decision on which man's for her.)

The ending of this book.... it'll leave you wanting the next! So so glad I have it here because I have to know how things will go next.

Wow 🤩 Darian has grown on me as each of the stories in this series has rolled over me. The clear message she has given to Tyler and Zander about where she stands in their relationship is not well received by either. The Rakshawsa queen is exacting her revenge on Darian for killing her son and trading places for the torture is the plan that Zander and Tyler come up with to get her back putting Zander’s kingdom at risk. After asking too many questions about her ring she is now on the Jinn counsels radar in a very unpleasant way. Will she be allowed to live Tyler now that she has made her choice despite what the Shaede King’s opinion. Tragic cliff hanger for Darian at the end - got see what happens.

I just I'm so confused...about how I feel about the relationship aspect of this story.

This book is pretty much examining feelings and relationships with some little action in it.

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS BELOW:

So in the last book Lorik played Darian. Darian has been kidnapped and due to knowing Xander's pov from the end of the last book we have a pretty good idea that Darian is going to be rescued at some point, who knows when though. This scene reminds me a lot of what happened to Sam in Airhman's dungeon in the Imp series. So if you recall that similar scale, except that rather than Airhman rubbing against Sam's soul, Padma is taunting Darian with illusion that looks so real, and making Darian fearful. It's gross.

So what happens? Well a lot, but eventually Darian gets out. There is just so much here that I don't want to give away so I'll skip this.

Basically we find out what has been going on with Tyler, and at this point I couldn't tell you which team I'm for, Tyler or Xander. Originally I was team Tyler, then I was team Xander and now I'm not sure. I in some ways found Tyler being a plot device to keep Xander and Darian apart and now that I know the scope of what Xander felt, I feel like it also deserves to be tried. I feel like Tyler is trying to do what Azriel and Henry did to Darian, keep her isolated and all to himself. He called her need to be with Raif, Xander and Ash co-dependence and I just don't see it. Of course she's a bit codependent because she's been alone, but they are also her people, and they are her friends. It struck me as odd to him saying that, which colored my view on what he was doing. Plus the more he did his bizarre monotone talking, or absentmindedly talking, I got more and more irked. He demands Darian to be honest but tells nothing of himself until it's entirely too late. He is just as much at fault for the state of their relationship. I just idk, he isn't the same to me, and apparently Darian can't see it.

Anya has her baby, and something strikes Darian, can she have kids, does she want kids, Jinn can't reproduce right? So when she brings this up to Tyler I am not satisfied with his responses. They kind of bother me, and he continues to circumvent them. But eventually we do know and what I found out still doesn't make me sure of him.

I sort of want to explore her with Xander and see what happens there. What happened at the end (big spoiler) is super interesting and yes heartbreaking, but at this point since I'm so unsure I am not sure where I even stand with that spoiler. It could open up some doors so yea I'm at a loss which is why I rated it 4. I'm all over the scale on this one. I think #6 could make or break the series depending how it's done.
