Love, love, love, love, love!
It’s a new author. It’s their first book. I hesitatingly open/swipe to that first page, almost afraid of what I will find. In the back of my mind I always think of the work – the blood, sweat and tears – that go into the incredible achievement of publishing a story. What if it doesn’t strike a chord? What if I don’t connect with the characters? What if I just can’t explain it but I just don’t like it at all? Well, any thoughts like that were quickly, quickly laid to rest as I dove into this debut novel by Maria Macdonald.
Pearson Amberry has pulled away from almost everyone in her life. Unexplained tragedies has caused her to distance herself from most of her friends as she looks around and realizes her best friends are the only ones who have stuck by her. She can always count on the three closest people to her in the world but even they are going to lose patience with her eventually. She knows that. She just doesn’t seem to be able to do anything about it as her past refuses to let her go. Connor McKenna, her one true love once upon a time, remains a friend but even that is straining under the pressure of festering secrets. Soph, her childhood best friend, is always on her side ready to kick her and hug her as needed. Saul, the last of their tight quartet, understands her better than she knows herself. Dane, a newcomer in her life, strikes a chord instantly and provides a new perspective that sees Pearson trying to mend fences and reconciling the past. As the story unfolds, the past is slowly revealed and the relationships between all of them are tested to the breaking point. When all is said and done will she and Connor find that elusive happy ever after? Will they all still call each other friend?
The story started a bit slow but after the first chapter or so I knew this was going to be a “one sitting” read. Switching points of view between Pea and Con, the characters became so real to me that I couldn’t wait to read the next page, the next chapter quickly enough. What would be revealed next? Pea, at first, seemed to be fragile, requiring the cossetting that her friends were providing her. That first impression changed quickly as event after event showed how strong she actually was. The interaction between her and her friends was filled with emotion and love, even when they were at odds with each other. They were friends first but family by choice; and all the more precious for it. I felt the connection between them all, the author building their bonds effortlessly but so effectively by sharing the highs and the lows from their shared past. This book had me weeping and smiling with a feeling, at the end, of meeting new, lasting friends. While I don’t think I know near enough about Saul, Dean and Soph I do know I cannot wait for their stories. An incredible debut novel!
