The Creature of Gravesend Bay by Jim Donohue
THIS. This is how you write a short story.
Jim Donahue completely outdid himself with "The Creature of Gravesend Bay". I picked this up a few hours ago thinking I’d read for a little while and come back to it. Yeah...that didn’t happen. I could not put it down.
From the very beginning, little things start happening around the harbor that just don’t add up. Damage to the docks. Damage to the hulls of boats that doesn’t make sense. Carla Greer, the harbor master, and the detectives are trying to find logical explanations for things that very quickly stop feeling logical at all.
And you FEEL everything right along with them.
The stress. The confusion. The dread. The fear that slowly starts creeping in as they realize something is very, very wrong. Every emotion in this story feels tangible. You aren't just reading about Gravesend Bay—you can see it. I could picture the harbor, the boats sitting in their slips, the docks, the water, and everyone trying to figure out what the hell is happening beneath it.
And then there’s the creature.
The level of detail Jim puts into describing it makes it ridiculously easy to visualize—which may not actually be a good thing because this thing is TERRIFYING. But it isn’t just what the creature looks like that got me.
It learns. It remembers. It adapts.
Every time they think they’ve figured out a way to stop it, it learns from what they’ve done and adjusts. And it learns FAST. You can feel the danger escalating because every attempt to fight it only seems to make it more intelligent, more adaptable, and even harder to stop.
And I'm not touching the how or why because that is something you need to discover for yourself.
What makes the whole thing hit even harder is how important this harbor is to the town. It isn't just where something terrifying happens. *
It's their lifeline. Fishing, jobs, families, livelihoods—Gravesend Bay depends on that water. When something invades it and threatens not only their lives but everything the town depends on, the fear and desperation become that much more real.
I seriously don't know how Jim managed to pack this much atmosphere, tension, emotion, and absolute terror into a short story. I could see everything happening like a movie playing in my head, and once I started reading, there was no putting it down.
This is an absolute MUST-READ for creature-horror fans.
And that warning about staying away from the dock?
You don't have to tell me twice. I learn fast! WELL DONE!

This is the second book in the upcoming Echoes From Below series that I've gotten to read. Next up we got Jim Donohue with his entry, The Creature of Gravesend Bay. This starts off with a harbor master seeing damaged ships and missing people. Eventually the missing people become mutilated remains and Carla has to find out what these 'creatures' are.
The suspense in this one was enough to keep me turning the pages. Also, Jim does a great job keeping you wondering what these creature are. All we know is that their intelligence level is that of a human, which is scary enough on its own. To add in even more flavor, the characters realize that these creatures might never be defeated, only scared away for a period of time.
However, I wasn't ready for the ending where the truth about the creatures is revealed. All I can say is that Jim pulled the rug from under me. I thought I had the ending predicted, but nope. I can't reveal the ending, but be prepared to be surprised. Another great read from Jim!

September 16, 2026Carla is the harbor master of Gravesend Bay. Everything seems perfect until some damages occur that can't be explained. Now, Carla has discovered a creature that is always learning is extremely large and knows the bay better than anyone. Intriguing creature feature.
