Bethesda Softworks LLC is an American video game publisher based in Rockville, Maryland. The company was founded by Christopher Weaver in 1986 as a division of Media Technology Limited, and in 1999 became a subsidiary of ZeniMax Media. In its first fifteen years, it was a video game developer and self-published its titles. In 2001, Bethesda spun off its own in-house development team into Bethesda Game Studios, and Bethesda Softworks became a publisher only. It currently also publishes games by ZeniMax Online Studios, id Software, Arkane Studios, MachineGames, Tango Gameworks and Bethesda Game Studios Austin.
The Art of Fallout 4 is absolutely gorgeous. Full of beautiful and original art set in the Fallout world. Even if you've never played the game, but consider yourself a sci-fi fan then this is a great book. If you love Fallout..this is a no brainer.
I received a copy of this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. First, I will say that I am not a gamer. I am an avid reader and book reviewer. But I'm married to a gamer. Who LOVES Fallout 4. Just watching my husband play, I've come to love this game. I enjoy the details right down to the brand names of items and especially the music. It's right up there with finding a good book series with incredible world-building that you just want to spend more time in. I love the idea behind Fallout 4, and I especially love how intricate the personalization of this game is. You could literally spend days just designing and creating within this game without ever touching the story line. (My husband has pink yard flamingos manning his turret guns) This book is a must for any Fallout 4 fan - it's like getting a backstage pass to your favorite game. The art work is beautifully rendered. Most of the book is full-page artwork. But the book isn't just art, the team has included tons of sketch and concept pieces directly from the artists' notebooks along with descriptions of and reasons for modifications. It's really neat seeing the evolution of the characters and the world-building. The team Bethesda put an incredible amount of time into making this Fallout the best one yet. This book is the step-by-step documentation of how they arrived at the finished product.
In fairness I am a fan of the series. I have played 1, 2, Tactics, 3, New Vegas, and 4 an average of 10 times each, start to finish. I got into the series in the late 90's and have eagerly awaited each new installment along the way.
The first thing that strikes me about this book is the quality. So many video game books are poorly built, and clearly use the cheapest materials available. This book is built like a high end text book. The sheer size of it would have made cheap construction a recipe for it to fall apart in your hands. But this was avoided by using heavy hardback cover, and very heavy paper stock. I can't tell you how many times while reading this, I thought I had 2 pages stuck together when I went to turn the page. This book is built to last.
As for the content - it is without equal in my experience. TONNES of vivid full color artwork, with an intro to each section and notes on drawings where applicable. 366 pages of pleasure await inside. Stop reading this dumb review and GO GET A COPY!
As a fan of the Fallout videogame series, and a huge fan of the Apocalypse sub-genre of speculative fiction, I have always loved looking at Bethesda's artwork for the Fallout games. Fallout 4 is their most recent addition to this series of games (as of writing this), and the artwork sure delivers. This is an excellent and quick read for fans of the series and for those who love reading about the apocalypse.
I rarely play games, and have never bought accompanying books for the odd games I do play (it has always seemed to be reserved for die hard gamers) but I was quite impressed by the mood and tone set on the game 'Fallout 4', through the use of colour schemes, and many other little areas. The game itself is very detailed, yet rough and even unpolished, which helps to create all of the 'post nuclear' elements. This is a very detailed book complete with initial concepts, sketches as well as full art of scenery, characters, weapons and various environments throughout the wastelands of the game. In addition to that there are many designs that weren't published in the game and artwork of the adverts for the in-game products (like Nuka-cola) and other food / household items.
Great book to have if you are a fan of the game or even one to have if you simply have an interest in art itself. A quick flick through of the book immediately tells you the amount of skill and effort that goes into the visuals of the game and the art would even serve an aspiring artist to have this book among their collection for inspiration, even if they have no interest in the game or games themselves but are studying art for a career in a profitable sector. The gaming industry was one of a few not affected by the economic downturn in 2008, so would definitely be worth looking at various 'gaming art' books as a potential area of interest to show the various levels of concept to completion. There is commentary throughout the book and I have a better appreciation of the work that goes into the visuals of a game.
If you loved Fallout 4 or even have an interest in strange creatures, the post-apocalypse, retro-futuristic artwork then this is for you.
It's nicely divided into several sections, such as World, Characters, Creatures, Weapons and Vehicles, giving readers a nice cross section of topics.
There's some background information on the development on the game including the pre-production and alternate takes of what ended up in the game but as the name suggests it's mostly just art. Sketches, 3D renders, cross sections, schematics and full page spreads.
It's so easy to get lost in this book, it's currently sitting on my desk at work and whenever I need a break I'll flip it open and gaze at the amount of detail and love that went into this game.
I can't recommend it enough. War may never change but it certainly inspires some beautiful artwork.
This game has been eating away all of my time so I finally broke away to get some book reading done... about the game that is eating up all my time. This is a pretty pricey hardback but it's a beauty if you're a fan of the games. Pretty awesome stuff if you're a diehard.
From sketches to concept arts, I just want them all! I really appreciate all of the artworks from the Fallout 4 and how exquisitely very detailed in every each concept.
This is amazing, and that's putting it lightly. As a content creator myself, I understand the work that goes into completing projects. I loved Fallout 4, and I loved this book. To see the effort the creative team put into the 2015 video game, was just an incredible experience. I think what stood out the most was the chapter called "Illustrations". When the writers showed images of the in-game comic book art, it was so well done. It would be so cool to see Bethesda release future books based on books within the Fallout universe.
This is an impressive art book because it shows you so many different parts that went into Fallout 4. There isn't a lot read here but the art speaks for itself. It was interesting how the art varied from what appears in the game as well. Some art books show stuff that is mostly what you see in the movie or video game but there was quite a bit of variation here which I appreciated. Best of all, this book is meaty so you feel like you get a lot of content for your money.
Rating 2023: 5/5 - Fallout 4 is one of the best video games ever made. It is one of my favorites of all time!! I had to pick up this book because the art in Fallout is stunning. The amount of design and process they went through to create this game is phenomenal. The vastness of characters and setting is one of the many components of Fallout and when you play this game the detail is insane.
I cant believe the amount of detail the concept art covers, lost idea, extra details, and awesome ideas, I thoroughly love the work they put into convery the fall of civilization. That being said, atompunk is probably the least know version of the punk genre. I am quite happy fallout puts the effort they do to keep things alive.
While it makes me a little sad that a lot was cut from the final game, this book has some gorgeous art and ideas that I can see making it into other games. Whether you're a fan of Fallout or love looking at the art of video games, this one is a must read!
This was a beautiful book. I loved the game, though maybe not quite as much as New Vegas, and enjoyed seeing the concept art. The posters and magazine covers were amazing and hard to appreciate during the game so seeing them on their own and in full detail was great.
As a massive fan of the Fallout franchise, I loved getting to go behind the scenes and explore the art that led to this game! Even 9 years after the game came out, this book helped me to notice new details in the set pieces. I highly recommend it if you're a fan!
The art and concept art for this coffee table book are fantastic. Finishing the series on Amazon has made me go back and look at story, art, and I even started playing a new save file on the game. I love the world of Fallout pre and post bomb.
I love FO4, I love game design, I love the 50s and I love art. Almost one year after purchasing this, I still flip through it almost weekly and I keep being amazed. Incredibly inspiring and so much to find on every page. A must for fans of either one of the things mentioned above.
