Nearly a year and a half after the battle with The Professor where countless glowing fish filled the skies of Tokyo, 20% of the population in the Kanto region are now superhumans. As society grapples with the dramatic changes in the populace, a special ESP Academy is established so superhumans can attend school. Among the students is one Ren Jomaku, a girl who can create blocks of ice—and perhaps something much darker...
Continues to be fabulous! The art is fantastic. I just love this series. This volume begins a little confusing as it's over a year since the last book and we are introduced to new characters. These characters attend the Superhuman school and by the end of the book I'd fallen for all of them. A new bad guy has turned up following in the Professor's footsteps creating the Superhuman Defense front. They all wear masks so we don't know who they are. A few are revealed this volume. We have very brief glimpses of the White Girl and a hint at what she's been up to, but the ending suggests she'll be a part of the series again soon. This volume ends with all our new major characters in peril. Thank goodness Vol. 5 arrived in the mail this week.
This volume focuses on a new cast of characters with some of the old cast, but I feel it flounders here a bit. Suddenly it’s a bit more broken up than Rinka’s story is and feels like the manga author focused a bit more on fan service so I get a bit disappointed when we switch over to Ren’s story.
This volume had a slow start. I believe this resulted from the introduction of new characters at the beginning of a new story arc. By the end of this omnibus volume, the story and pace were back where I want them to be.
I have to get used to the new characters. I miss Rinka a LOT. Hopefully she's back in the next volume. They foreshadowed that at the end. *crosses fingers*
This is the second manga I've read in one week where the author has to start a new story arc after finally completing the storyline that drove the plot for six volumes. But whereas Prison School spent a volume dabbling in conventional school-life BS before starting a new storyline, this one jumps right into the next arc. Too bad the new arc is boring. The author introduces two new protagonists who are exactly like the original ones, only without any of the charisma. Meanwhile the actual protagonists are MIA, which is supposed to build suspense but just leaves me wanting to skip ahead. It doesn't help that the story follows an episodic villain-of-the-week format for way too long before getting focused on a new plot. Things do pick up towards the end, but I don't know why the author didn't just keep on keeping on.
It's interesting to see life in Tokyo with the crazy ESP powers through a different character's eyes. This time, we follow Ren Jomaku, a girl who until recently was a shut-in because of her powers. She's just trying to get through life controlling her crazy ice powers, but then the terrorists start targeting her!
That roughly sums up the two volumes included in this book without too much spoiler. We see some familiar faces, though mostly new ones. For the most part, I like the new cast and look forward to seeing how they eventually react with all those I liked so much from previous volumes.
warning: for those that love the series but hate change. this 4th omnibus may make your eye twitch. don't give up. give it a shot. I ended up.having new characters to obsess over
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this knowing that Rinka was missing but I did. I like the main characters and look forward to the rest of the series
