Steve Cole is the slightly crazy, highly frantic, millions-selling, non-stop author of Astrosaurs, Cows In Action, Astrosaurs Academy, The Slime Squad, Z. Rex and many other books (including several original Doctor Who stories).
He used to edit magazines and books but prefers the job of a writer where you can wear pyjamas and eat chocolate all day.
Steve just can't stop writing - if he does, strange robots appear and jostle him vigorously until he starts again.
In his spare time he loves making music, reading old comics, thinking up ideas for new books and slumping in front of a warm TV.

I enjoyed this more than I didn't enjoy it.
I don't think it is a spoiler to say that this book contains monsters. It is in the title. Some of them are quite imaginative where others feel a little clichéd. The balance between these isn't always level and some are a lot more interesting than others.
The story was never boring but also lacked edge of the seat excitement. There were moments that felt surprising but also some others that were telegraphed so much that even a blind monster could see them. It is a book I have read and I feel others should read too. It just never got above a level of "good" in any regards.

I am a lot older than the intended audience but I just liked the idea of the book so grabbed a copy. Giving it 3.5 stars. Good idea in the story but struggled a bit with it and think the target audience would also.
I liked the idea of monsterland and the main monsters that Bob befriends are likeable although Alfie's narrative does get a bit annoying with his 'catchphrase'. A likeable book but not amazing.

This book is frequently cross with crazy goings on, and entirely hilarious. I hate snakes, so Zola's hair-do freaked me out no end but even I had to laugh at her snake's reactions to what happens in the story. If this had been written by any other author I would have passed because Bob is the main character (prefer girls who I at least can relate to more easily), and there are snakes in, but I am a bit of a Steve Cole fangirl, I love Steve's humour so had no hesitation in wanting to see where his imagination took Bob and friends.
I loved the sheer volume of pages which had me giggling away at Bob's adventure. He ends up in lots of hot water, sometimes because of his ignorance of the monster world, and frequently because of mishaps (both of his own making and others). I liked the similarities and differences between the monster and human world (most being gross, some being rather logical). The concept of different levels to the monster world leaves plenty of room for exploration in future stories, and let my own mind wonder as to what Zola and the other monsters' lives must be like pre-Bob.
The illustrations are numerous, funny, although most of them weirded me out (I'm very particular with the style I like), and some I had to cover the page, they help make the amazing story more amazing. I have to say that I partly brought the grade down because if reading the book on a hot day in one sitting you will end up with blackened hands from holding the heavily inked book. The problem can be solved by a) wearing gloves b) reading it on a cold day c) reading the ebook version. However you read this book rest assured you will love the zaney characters all of who have secrets to reveal to you (and Bob). I suspect there'll be significant time before the next monster book (I think there will be one) for me to get over the ickier parts of the tale and enjoy Bob's misadventures in monster world.
I received a copy from the publisher for an honest review on my blog Nayu's Reading Corner http://nayusreadingcorner.blogspot.co...

So what did I think?
A must for fans of Astrosaurs and Cows in Action and other crazy reads!
Monster mayhem erupts when Bob has a ‘brown trouser moment’ and falls, wait-no, CRASHES into something rancid and rotten (while farting all the way). Turns out he’s landed in Terra Monstra. He’s 32% afraid, 36% excited and 32% full of wonder. With his head about to explode with questions, it’s a good job he makes friends with Verity, Alfie and Zola. As he seeks a way to return home he meets all kinds of weirdness, and calamities keep curve balling at him.
This is a whoosh along theme park ride of a book, so pay attention. And you’ll be brilliant at percentages by the end of it.
Jim Field‘s brilliant illustrations boost the monstrous humour. Although a discreet warning for grown-ups: this book contains arguably the most disturbing picture of a bottom in the entire history of children’s literature. It’s 100 % likely to induce the “ewwww!” reaction.
I think this book would suit kids who love getting The Phoenix comic. My eight year old was so keen to finish the book that he read the last couple of chapters independently, which was a first!
Happy reading!
