Deep Into the Night is book 2 in the Hartz Island series, and picks up a few months after book 1 ended.
The H/h in this book is actress Cassie Ryan and ICE agent Jack Wyatt, and they continue the search to break a crime ring dealing in human trafficking on the west coast. We also get a new twist in the suspense with Cassie's ex-boyfriend, a ruthless Russian mobster.
We met Jack in book 1, but Cassie is new in town. She used to live there, but moved away years ago to become an actress. After much physical abuse, she escapes her Russian mobster boyfriend and hides out in Hartz Island. She soon crosses paths with Jack, her childhood crush, and now the sparks are back.
The story unfolds slowly and with a lot of detail, but it does provide enough background so you could jump into this story without reading book 1. However, I would recommend reading these books in order, as there is a lot of back story that gets re-introduced.
Jack and Cassie work together spying on potential suspects, and using her acting ability to get closer to the truth about the human trafficking crime ring. It was quite interesting and well plotted out, but it made me question how easily he recruited her for these dangerous missions. I had to suspend my disbelief a bit and just go with it.
Overall, I enjoyed this one, but not as much as book 1. The angst level was low, and the story gets bogged down in a lot of details that simply didn't seem relevant to the story. The romance was also just 'tepid', and took a backseat to the suspense and intrigue. Unfortunately, I didn't 'feel' the connection with these two, and the HEA wasn't the satisfying ending I prefer in reading romances. It was realistic, but fell a bit flat for my tastes.
I like how this author tells a story. This is the second one in this series. This is Jack and Cassie's story and a continuation of the mystery of what is happening on the island.
Deep into the Night was a page turner. The characters described in this book were genuine and I felt like I knew them personally. The story held your interest until the very end. This is a book you wish would not end. I also enjoyed learning more about the Northwest Territory of the US. The author is very witty and can't wait to read her next book. JoAnn
You don't need to read the first book (Slip into the Night) but I wholly recommend it so you know who some of the characters are (Although you certainly could read as a standalone).
Cassie and Jack are a fantastic couple and there are so many facets to the story, including lots of ferry trips, some money laundering, an account in the Cayman Islands and human trafficking. Terrific PNW scenery and environment, well developed characters and a great story/plot.
I loved this book! I had read Slip into the Night by Ms. Loy and was thrilled when I saw that the sequel was released. The setting was great and the characters very hot! Ms. Loy's writing rivals Sandra Brown!
