It's been five years since Adelaide Harper broke Chris Johansen's heart—and their long-distance engagement. But when she steps off a train in Peppin, Texas, and strolls back into Chris's life, he can't help but panic. Because to avoid his parents' plan to arrange a marriage for him, he's let his family believe he and Adelaide are still engaged.
Adelaide is facing her own troubles with a matchmaking mama and a parade of aggravating suitors. So pretending to let Chris court her could help them both. And after five years, there's no need to worry that the time together will reignite their long-buried love…is there?
Bachelor List Matches: A handpicked bride for every bachelor in small-town Texas
Noelle Marchand's love of literature began as a child when she would spend hours reading beneath the covers long after she was supposed to be asleep. Over the years, God began prompting her to write. Eventually, those stories became like "fire shut up in her bones" leading her to complete her first novel at fifteen.
Noelle is a Houston-native who graduated from Houston Baptist University in May 2012. She received bachelors degree in Mass Communication with a focus in journalism and Speech Communication.
Second time reading a book of Merchand’s! I read this slower than I usually do because I was in the middle of moving! I was so busy. Anyhoo, I enjoyed this story!
There were many good lines and is Marchand a pleasant author! ☺️
However, I don’t see how “the bachelor list” has ANY IMPORTANCE! It’s a silly plot thing that got blown up. The book says that some random chick named Ellie (still don’t know who she is) created a list with peoples’ names on it, matched in pairs, and that it’s now “town lore” and is 1000% accurate. Firstly, this is silly. Secondly, “lore”? Sounds too ungodly for this christian book line. Strange, y’know?
This book would’ve been a 5/5 for me if there was more real romance that felt nice. Adelaide was stupid and annoying 98% of the time and Chris never did anything wrong. 🙄
This book was all over the place and was barely about Chris and Adelaide.
Adelaide’s mom is an idiotic hypocrite that ruined anything and everything that she got her hands on. (Her favorite things to ruin being her own daughter’s life and love life)
Everett was kind, but was in the way of the whole story. There wasn’t enough content between Chris and Adelaide. Every single time they started having a good conversation, they got interrupted or one of them walked away! 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️SMH
Chris was so perfect and always did the right thing. This book is barely about Texas. They mention the city Houston a few times, but that’s it. That’s a tad disappointing.
This book wasn’t amazing for me, honestly. But I don’t regret reading it! ☺️
I've read several of Noelle Marchand's books. I've enjoyed them so much. This book was never boring. Chris and Adelaide had to come to terms with their pasts before they finally could become a couple. The other characters in the book definitely helped to move the story forward in both fun and serious ways. It was a well written story and I rooted for Adelaide and Chris to ultimately come together. I enjoy the Love Inspired Historical books that are a part of a series. It's fun to revisit characters you read about in earlier books in the series. I wish Harlequin would release these books every month like they used to. I appreciate the religious element in these books, too!
“The Texan’s Engagement Agreement” by Noelle Marchand – Book Review
1 star
This is about a father with a supposedly weak heart who wants his son to get married and have a son, so he can hold his grandson before he supposedly dies.
The father has sent away to the old country for a bride for the son (without the son’s permission or knowledge), even though the son is already engaged, and if the son does not come up with his own bride in short measure, he will be stuck with his father’s choice.
Prior to the woman’s arrival from the old country, the son is ambushed by a wedding (which he knows nothing about), set up for him and his supposed already longtime fiancée by his father.
When a man is engaged, he should not be dating someone else at the same time; yet this son has proposed to countless women in town during his fiancée’s years-long absence (another plot twist), who all turn him down.
This book is filled with confusion and stops and starts, people manipulating other people in order to get what they each want, and that seems to be the acceptable code of behavior.
There are several twists in the plotline, and among them, one where the father’s ‘heart’ problem turns out to be anxiety, and the whole family has been manipulated for years as a result of this fabricated health problem and nondisclosure by the father.
His heart is actually healthier than other men his age. The son has to finally disclose this to the mother, when the father refuses to. That’s when she finds out that he was not only not dying but is healthy as a horse and has been all along. The father wouldn’t allow his family doctor to say anything to his wife.
Typical ending ensues, along with all the other garbage swept under the rug.
I found this volume disrespectful to the reader’s time and intelligence and didn’t enjoy the manipulation of the main female character nor her subservience.

This historical novel reads more like a sweet, more modern novel. I had a hard time remembering as I read that it takes place in the late 1800s. Chris Johansen wants to get married to a girl of his choosing in the worst way. Originally from Norway, Chris's parent want him to marry a Norwegian girl and have gone so far as to correspond back to the home country for a mail-order bride for their son. Chris admits to his parents that he has been already engaged for five years to his high school girlfriend but neglects to tell them she broke the engagement one year later after moving to the big city with her mother. The harder the parents argue for the mail-order bride, the more Chris tries to find another girl in town willing to say "I do" without admitting his original engagement is over.
The story that ensues is a laughable tale as Adelaide, the non-fiancé, is brought back to town as her stepfather chases a news story, sees Chris and finds out that broken promises just may not be so broken after all. Then the mail-order bride arrives! This could play out in so many different ways, but the best part is finding out for yourself exactly how that happens. Read this novel; you will be smiling before the end.
The Texan's Engagement Agreement by Noelle Marchand a Bachelor List Matches series. Five years ago Adelaide Harper and Chris Johansen got married. Adelaide told her mother and she said it wasn't legal since she was only 17. Adelaide left town with her mother. Adelaide wrote to Chris saying they weren't married because she wasn't of age to marry. For five years Chris told everyone they were engaged. Chris's dad got a mail order bride from Norway to marry Chris. Chris didn't want to get married, because he still had feeling for Adelaide. After five years of being away Adelaide and her mother and stepdad moved back to town. Adelaide doesn't trust men because of her real dad. She pushes Chris away. There are threats on Adelaide's life. They have to figure out who was doing it. A great read.
I always enjoy the stories that Noelle writes about characters in Peppin, Texas! This story focuses on Adelaide and Chris. As in previous stories in this series, there is a Bachelor List that someone made up that matches men in the town to ladies in the town and it's been very successful so far! when Chris sees his match is Adelaide, he can't believe it because they were previously engaged 5 years ago and Adelaide left town and hasn't been back. She broke up with him and he doesn't see how they can possibly be a match! Then, all of the sudden, there is Adelaide, back in his town again and things take off from there! This story has a little bit of mystery, a lot of romance, family issues, and former characters from previous books! I enjoyed it a lot. I would recommend it!
Adelaide and Chris were engaged five years ago. Then her mother moved her out of town and convinced her that Chris was like her father. No good.
When she returns to Peppin, she finds that Chris has never told his family about their broken engagement. As they spend time together, Chris realizes that he has always loved her and he will always continue to love her. Adelaide takes a lot of convincing though. And it doesn't help when his mail-order arranged bride shows up.
I loved that every time they were torn apart, something happened to make them decide to keep up the charade to keep them protected. And in the end, it took forgiveness and understanding and being able to admit to that long lasting love.
I completely understand Adelaide's going back and forth with Chris, but I really started to feel for him after some time. It's like she had 2 sets of gut feelings and it began to drive me crazy just as she started realizing things. I guess it just felt so real, I couldn't stand feeling like that for any longer... I'm way too empathetic for my own good apparently:/
Very well-written and I eagerly await the next book in the series:)
Goodreads Giveaway: I love this author! I'm so blessed be be chosen to receive this free book! It was beautifully written and I was unable to put it down! The love story is one I will never forget and will draw from for my own personal marriage. You can tell the author is a Christian & has a desire to share that with others. I highly recommend this book & can't wait to read ALL of her other books!
The famous tale of how you should not just a book by it's cover. A woman comes from a prestigious family, man comes from one "beneath her," and they happen to fall in love. Time and distance can't keep them apart, and God does not work by man's standards. Beautiful tale on how God will always have the last say.
I really like Ms Marchands books! They are fun and faith-filled with nice twists and turns. This book wasn't an exception. The author´s humorous yet insightful writing is a delight to read and I´m eagerly awaiting her next book!
