After reading the blurb I didn't realize that the book had 2 timelines so I was surprised to find myself in 1867 shortly after starting the story. In the 1867 story we meet Thaddeus, a former Union soldier with more than his share of tragedy in his past, moving to Tennessee to help his friend and cousin run a mill. But after that first chapter we're back in modern day meeting the thriller writer Hayden Winters who is rummaging about the kitchen of the Peach Orchard Inn in desperate search for coffee and soon after Carrie appears to save the day.
Normally in books with dual timelines one really interests me and the other is kind of taking up space but that wasn't the case in this book. Both timelines hooked me though I did read the 1867 story with growing dread as more and more modern hints indicated that things weren't going to end well. The modern story was a little less intense but I loved the characters. Carrie and Hayden were really interesting people and I loved them together. I liked that Hayden wanted to be around Carrie for who she was and just genuinely enjoyed spending time with her. Carrie was insecure but not over-angsty and mostly just wanted to do her own thing quietly.
This book really reminded me of a Robyn Carr book with the community building and the feel that you're getting a peek into day to day life for the characters and not just the love story. There's a lot going on but it all felt very natural and didn't get overwhelming. I really liked Brody's character and liked that his situation and his feelings were complicated. His relationship with Hayden was especially nice.
This is one of those books I could talk about for ages. There's so many different relationships and challenges and bits of happiness and the characters are well developed and complex. I was immediately pulled into the world of Honey Ridge both present and past and I just couldn't wait to find out what happened next. This was my first book by Linda Goodnight but it definitely won't be my last.
This is actually billed as the 2nd in the Honey Ridge series but it doesn't read like a series book at all. I had absolutely no problem jumping in on this book.

Hayden adalah seorang penulis crime fiction bestseller. Utk mendapatkan inspirasi bahan cerita novelnya, Hayden pergi ke Honey Ridge. Disanalah dia bertemu pustakawan yg bernama Carrie.

Pelajaran moralnya bagus tanpa menggurui.

Staying at the Peach Orchard B&B in Honey Ridge, TN, Hayden Winters, a thriller writer, is getting ready to begin working on his newest book. When he meets Carrie Riley, he introduces himself, “I kill people.” Immediately, she began to back away. He quickly adds that he is a writer and kills people on the pages of his novels. Once he told her his name, she immediately remembered his books from the library where she works. But, there’s a lot she won’t know about Hayden Winters. For one thing, it’s not his real name. It’s not even his pen name. It’s a name he’s given himself so people will never, ever connect him with his past.

The night adds to the mystery with intensive thunder and lightning. Hayden notices some movement on the porch. When he checks it out, he realizes it’s just a boy, drenched from the rain. Both Hayden and Carrie work to get him dry and fed. They begin to put it together that the boy is not lost as he claimed. He doesn’t want to go home. But, there’s much more going on with these three lives. They knew each other differently many years ago … back in 1867. Hayden begins dreaming about himself as Thaddeus, a Yankee after the Civil War.

This is a book about the secrets we are afraid to face, and the secrets we keep from one another. It’s also a book about the character’s present lives mingled with their past lives, and those unresolved conflicts. Finally, it’s a sweet romance budding between Hayden and Carrie. The way the book flowed into 1867 from the present was a bit disorderly and confusing. There was no header to suggest the change. The author developed strong, likable characters that the reader comes to care about. We want them to find ‘happily ever after’. Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Author Hayden Winters is staying in Honey Ridge, Tennessee doing research for his next book. The bed and breakfast where he’s staying, is known to help those having problems and for having a magical quality to it.

While there, he meets Carrie the local librarian who is afraid of just about everything … including the thunderstorm that’s currently happening around them. Their paths bring them to finding a young boy, wet, frightened and afraid to go home. They come to find that he’s from an abusive home and lives with an alcoholic father.

Shortly after checking into the B&B Hayden begins to have dreams about a couple who lived around the time of the Civil War; Thad a Union soldier and Josie a Confederate. It’s when the dreams start to mirror his life that he begins to think that the dreams are trying to tell him something.

This is an emotionally charged story that deals with real-life issues and abuse. I enjoyed how the author brought two different eras and seamlessly entwined them into the story. Although this is the second book in the Honey Ridge series, and I didn’t read the first book, I didn’t have any problems following along with the story. I now want to get the first book and see how that one ties into this story. Overall an intriguing book that I would definitely recommend.

Intriguing two stories, twined together by history and the dream world.
The story is like a long stroll in the southern countryside, with warm sunny days, and families enjoying the lazy days in the garden. It is warm, and cozy, with a loving family, and life as we know it. Or so it seems at the first glance.

But there's lots of undercurrents even in the small town, and Carrie, with her kind heart and loving nature, is ready to step in, and take care of the situation, in whatever capacity is needed.
I liked Carrie, she has a huge heart, she sees the people around her, and takes care of them. She has been hurt in the past, she doesn't feel like she is anything special, quite the opposite, but when Hayden comes to town, a new Carrie comes to light, the Carrie Hayden sees.
The beauty, grace, and loving nature that Hayden sees in her, gets behind the walls he has built. Soon they are sharing stories, life, and memories, even adventures, like with no one else before.
They are rather adorable together, the way they care about Brody, look after him, and befriend him, is sweet. But for Hayden, it also brings back painful memories.
Memories he has to keep hidden, to survive.

Since arriving in town, Hayden has strange dreams, that seems to be connected to the history of the town he is visiting. Oddly, the two tales, one in present time, and the other in the past and in Hayden's dreams, fold out parallel to each other.

This charming book about life in small, southern town, is filled with the healing powers of love, how the worst kind of abuse and neglect can be healed in the heart, how hope and joy will brighten the day, and the scariest night will feel peaceful and calm, when you have someone you love by your side. It made me long for the summer to come sooner...

The Rain Sparrow is an incredibly sweet love story involving two people who learn to let go of fears and look toward a future of happiness. Hayden Winters is a famous author who comes to Honey Ridge to do research for his next book. He never thought he would meet someone as interesting as Carrie Riley. She is the local librarian and is afraid of rainstorms and taking chances. Hayden begins to dream of another couple who lived right after the Civil War. When their story starts to resemble his own, he begins to figure out that the dreams are trying to tell him something.

I really enjoyed this clean romance. It was so fun watching Hayden and Carrie fall in love. I definitely found myself rooting for this couple. Through the dreams, the reader is treated to a second romance as well. I also loved the message that this story conveyed. Your DNA and birth family are not in your control. It's what you do during your life that matters. The story is also rounded out nicely with secondary characters. Carrie's family was great and one I look forward to visiting with again.

This is the second book in the Honey Ridge series. It does very well as a stand alone. I didn't read the first one, but I know I will be looking for it to read Jayne and Eli's story.

The second of the Honey Ridge series, I again enjoyed this work of historical fiction. Alternating between present day and the Civil War era, the narrative unveils important character and plot details gradually and effectively.

Review
Carrie is a librarian in Honey Ridge. She is scared of storms and pretty much everything else. Hayden is a writer who comes to stay at the local inn as a way to draw inspiration for his next novel. He is someone who is ashamed of his past and tries to avoid it at all costs. Still a different kind of past keeps haunting him in his dreams. When the two find a small boy hiding from a storm they take an interest in him and his well being. They both need to face their pasts, things they are scared of  and open up to the possibility of something more than friendship.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Here are the top 5 things I liked about The Rain Sparrow.

Hayden and Carrie. The two main characters in this were great. They were both so kind, loving and sweet. While they both had their issues and kept some stuff back from each other they were able to work through all the obstacles. They were a very easy couple to root for.

Historical Chapters. During his time at the inn, Hayden has dreams about the inn and it's owners right after the civil war. He doesn't understand why he is having these dreams and how he knows so much about these people and their story. These dream chapters tell the story of a Northerner man who comes to work at the inn and its mill and the Southern woman who lives there. I enjoyed them so much I wish there was a whole book around them and that time. I may have to search out some more civil war fiction!

Heavy Book References. Pretty much this will happen if your two main characters are a librarian and writer. I always love a heavy dose of book references in my stories and this was no different.

Southern Charm. This book made me want to go stay at a beautiful inn down in the south. It seemed picturesque, the small town was charming and the people seemed so interesting and, well, for lack of a better word, southern!

Happy Ending. I am always happy when books like this end happily. All story lines seemed to wrap up nicely and put a smile on my face.

I thought the pacing was done well and always kept me interested in what would happen next. My only thing is it was written in the third person and that isn't my favorite. Still it was done well and it didn't bother me too much. If you enjoy southern, small town stories with some historical fiction interlaced this would be for you. While this is the second book in the Honey Ridge series it reads as a stand alone.I am very excited to check out the first book in this series now!

When Hayden Winters, a renowned author of thrillers, arrives at the Peach Tree Inn in Honey Ridge, Tennessee, his expectation is for some quiet solitude to complete his latest novel. Hayden, though charming, keeps people at a distance, not wanting anyone to know the secrets and torments of his . past. But when Hayden encounters the timid local librarian, Carrie Riley, in the middle of a stormy night, something sparks in Hayden's heart. Carrie is afraid of storms, flying and life in general, but in Hayden sees new possibilities for her future. When the two discover a wayward boy hiding at the Inn, it awakens in both of them a desire to protect and care for the child, drawing them closer together. But can they let go of the hurts of the past, and allow love to bring them healing?
Interspersed into the story, through Hayden's dreams, is a historical account of the original owners of the Inn just following the Civil War. Can a Yankee soldier find welcome in a southern town still reeling from the war?
Both stories are well developed, and difficult issues were handled with sensitivity.
This is the second book in the Honey Ridge series, but could be read as a standalone.

Just as good as the first book (The Memory House), if not better! I loved the interconnecting love stories, both historical and contemporary. Loved the characters. The ending was deeply satisfying. I would have loved an epilogue for the Thad and Josie though!

I enjoyed this sequel to The Memory House. It's the love, understanding and vulnerabilities that give these two stories (century apart) meaning and bravery in the characters thoughts and actions. Overcoming the past.

Hayden Winters is a thriller writer who comes to Honey Ridge, Tennessee to work on his latest novel. Carrie Riley is one of the town librarians, and Hayden is drawn to her sweetness. They get to know each other when the two of them help Brody, a boy with an alcoholic father who's out in a thunderstorm in order to evade another bad Friday night.
At the same time, Hayden is having dreams about the previous residents of the Inn where he's staying. Josie is a Southern woman who's lost her fiance in the Civil War, but she's both attracted and repelled by the Yankee widower, Thaddeus, who comes to work the family grist mill.
The book switches back and forth between the two stories in a manner that reminded me of Nora Roberts' Boonsboro Inn books. Ms. Goodnight is a lovely writer and does a wonderful job in both the contemporary and historical sections with lyrical descriptions that evoke Tennessee for the reader.
Her characters feel very real; each has their own little quirks that bring them to life. It's also a sweet story though both parts have their moments of cruelty. The two sections come together in a very satisfying manner with the past helping those in the present to understand themselves better. I enjoyed this book very much and would recommend it to my friends.

I loved this one more than the first one in this series!

If you admire strong female characters, this is for you. Josie becomes the hero in the end when she sees the family mill on fire and goes to help with it, and she discovers her true feelings for Thad.

The writer in this story reveals his true background and discovers that is not an issue with his library girlfriend. She sees the true person he has become after growing up in a dysfunctional home. Her opinion is the same after she meets the fake mother that raised him. They go on to celebrate their love and share their interests in stories.

The innkeeper gets married. The first book ends with this couple being together. We still have unanswered questions about her son, and if he will return. Her sister is still there helping out but also struggling with her drinking. Julia has a son by marriage and he adores the dog. The orchard is a focal point at the bed and breakfast where peaches are a gift.

The dreams of Josie and Thad relate to the inn, the mill, and objects found while repairing the inn and the buildings around the peach trees. The sweet tea, scones, and other baked goods keep the guests coming back. The southern history keeps the dreams coming and revealing the history of the land.

Are the ghosts louder at the B&B or does criminal novelist Hayden Winters just have an active imagination? Perhaps he’s just going crazy. Either way, it’s a ride that will take Hayden along with it. Hopefully giving him more thrilling ways to kill off characters as he explores the colourful world and residents of Honey Ridge.

With a parallel storyline; Thad and his love stories of civil war past era & present day occupants it was interesting how both tales unfolded and meshed. Sadly the world of 2024 still has men who hold tight to idiotic ideas on who is to be seen as more righteous; willing to destroy their own communities (setting fires/vandalism) for the sake of hateful thinking.

I’m glad the marbles didn’t just stop with Eli and Julia & got a tiny mention in this 2nd book. Perhaps now others will start believing in the Peach Orchard ghosts too. Hoping my predictions for book 3 (joint guilt felt from selling Tandy and reason for Mikey going missing) aren’t accurate.

Another nice entry in this series about the residents of Honey Ridge, Tennessee. It somewhat revolves around an old Victorian B&B, Peach Orchard Inn and the sisters (Julia and Valerie) who run it. This second book, though, features a guest of the Inn, Hayden, who is famous writer of thrillers as well as the town librarian, Carrie, who still hasn't recover the betrayal of a former love. They become involved in helping a young boy who has an unpleasant home. As they seek to help him and well as each other, we learn of cruelty & abandonment and what that can do to a person as well as love, forgiveness and recovery.

There is also the continued story of the prior residents of the Inn -- now just after the Civil War. As they try to move on, we learn of their struggles and their lives.

No profanity, no sex and mild Christian theme. A very enjoyable and ultimately uplifting book.

This is the first romance novel I have read in a long time and I was delighted with my choice. It had enough mystique to keep me interested and wanting to read more. The main characters were believable and doubly so, in the dreams the handsome writer, was having as flashbacks in time.

Brody was the lost soul that brought Carrie, the librarian, and Hayden, the famous author, together and gave them a reason to fight to free him. All entangled in lies and deceit they don't know how to find the truth.

Carrie's never quit attitude and Hayden's search for the truth will land them in situations they never dreamed they would encounter. The ride is endearing and thrilling.

This is a story with two time lines that come together so well. Hayden Winters
Is a writer who comes to the Peach Orchard Inn in Honey Ridge, Tennessee
to write a book. Here he meets librarian Carrie Riley who is afraid of
everything. On a stormy night they meet a young boy who they help and who helps change their lives. The tale is about abuse, love, grief, and
Learning to forgive and leaving the past behind. One time line is the present
and the other is people in 1867 that haunt Hayden's dreams. As Hayden
and Carrie heal in mind and spirit, they learn to accept life and day to day
living. An enjoyable, warmhearted story.

Second in the Honey Ridge series, and containing two tales in one: one historical and one contemporary, connected to one another via the mind and heart of a thriller writer when he visits a Tennessee town to do research for his next thriller. Little does he know that afraid of thunderstorms, Librarian Carrie Riley will steal his heart when he least expects it or wants her to.

But Hayden Winters is also captured by dreams of a post-Civil War trauma that he doesn't fully understand and one he can't seem to escape.

How this all works it way out is worthy of a reader's careful examination of details easy to miss but a disappointment if not retrieved. I loved it!

Famous author Hayden Winters is staying at Peach Orchard Inn where he can hopefully focus on writing his next bestseller. He plans to research background information in small town Tennessee. Soon after his arrival he meets Carrie Riley the local librarian who is afraid of thunder storms, big cities, flying and lots of other things. Hayden begins dreaming of events that took place on the Inn's property in 1867 to the point where it all feels real. When relics discovered in the Inn's renovation appear in Hayden's dream adventures he questions his sanity.
This is an entertaining read with family drama, forgiving, as well as love lost and found.

I truly liked it. The post civil war was one of my favorite setting. Hayden and Carrie also Thad and Josie were also perfect to each other
However, both stories were too simple, only revolved around Hayden, Carrie, Thad and Josie. Julia, Eli, Valery, Charlotte and Will all made appearance but they all hardly mattered, and only mentioned in hindsight. I realized that creating two stories in one book was not easy but I wished it could be more complicated
This is a good book to curl up in leisure time, not something to think about too hard

This is the second book in the Honey Ridge series and absolutely as good as the first (The Memory House)! I love how the author intertwines the past storyline with the present one and brings aspects of the historical situation in to help the characters in the present deal with their problems and issues. Linda Goodnight definitely weaves a great story and I can't wait to read the third book in the series.

This was a very good book. It was coupled with a book by Debbie Macomber which I had already read. I usually pass on books that are either co-authored or two authors in the same jacket. But, this book was given to me so what do ya do? It was so good! I loved the back and forth between 1800’s and present day. Also, the storyline was very very good.

A rainy atmospheric love story of a thriller writer ashamed of his past and of sharing it with a tender hearted, scared woman. While staying at an inn in Tennessee, he has dreams of real people from the Civil War and tries to decide whether or not to write their story instead of his usual thriller.

Love this series
Romance. Historical fiction. I love the parallel stories. One in present times and the other in the same location but at a previous time in history. The author makes the stories intertwine in a truly believable way. Looking forward to the next book in this series.

The Rain Sparrow drew me in from the very first page. Filled with humor, twists and turns of the characters’ lives kept me unable to stop reading. The movement back and forth between present day and 1865 was easy to follow. I always know when I pick up a book by Linda Goodnight it will be good.

Captivating Story

The author weaves past and present with skill. A complex plot with one focus being child abuse and neglect, handled with delicacy. The characters have enough depth to capture the reader's interest and empathy.
