I was raised in Alabama, so I know we Southerners don't hide our crazy people—we showcase them. Eccentric people make for the best stories, and we Southerners do love our stories. The need to tell stories has been a driving force in my life from childhood.

As a girl, my favorite books were mysteries and romances. When I realized there were books that featured both romance and mystery, I knew I'd found my calling. Now I get to play both matchmaker and murderer and get paid for it. Could there be a better job anywhere?

Very good book with excellent suspense and a second chance at love for Cade and Olivia. Cade has been on the run for two years after surviving a setup by a fellow agent and then being taken captive by a local militia/terrorist group. After escaping from them and going into hiding, he's decided to contact the one person he thinks he can trust. Olivia was his partner before all the trouble, and also the woman he had loved.

Olivia is stunned when he appears at her house in the middle of a blizzard, and even more so when she finds out what brought him out of hiding. Cade discovered that Olivia has become the target of the BRI, and he is determined to protect her. Neither expected the attraction that still burned between them. There are big trust issues that have them wary about believing in each other. I liked the way that they were upfront about those feelings and found the time to talk about them. Each of them had things in their past that made trusting others difficult, and worked against them in their previous relationship. I loved how both agreed that picking up where they left off would be a mistake, because of how much they had changed, but starting over, with better communication and sharing could be possible. It was great to see them getting to know each other all over again, and learn to open up more than they had before.

The suspense of the story was fantastic. The team at The Gates is still working on bringing down the BRI. When Cade disappeared he was suspected of working with them and proving his innocence would be difficult since he didn't know who in the FBI could be trusted. Their flight during the storm was intense as they battled the elements to get to safety. The support they got from Olivia's fellow agents was fantastic, with some pretty amusing encounters with them. As both BRI and the FBI started closing in on Cade and Olivia, they had to make some decisions on what they were going to do. Their plan was intense, with some pretty interesting results. While Cade's problem was solved, opening up a new future for him and Olivia, there are still questions to be answered. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

This is where I would normally put a plot synopsis, but to be honest, I'm not sure I really know what the plot was! Cade Landry was an FBI agent, but he's been on the run for two years ever since, I think, since a solo undercover mission he undertook to bring down the Blue Ridge Infantry went wrong and he was taken captive. It was never clear to me when Cade was in the FBI and when he was undercover with Blue Ridge Infantry. Although this is apparently the first book in a mini-series, everything in it is linked to previous books by Paula Graves, who is quickly becoming my least favourite Intrigue author!

Cade gets help from Olivia Sharp, his former partner in the FBI, as well as his former lover. Their relationship broke apart after the events of, I think, Killshadow Road, when an operation went wrong. Once again, I got confused about the timeline! I think the title of this one relates to Cade being the one who went against orders and made that operation go wrong. It could be linked to as high up as the FBI's assistant director. There may also be people in the FBI and the private firm Olivia works for who sympathise with the Blue Ridge Infantry.

Oh, I don't know! I'm not sure I really care. This was a pile of shit!

It's basically the same as Killshadow Road. Cade and Olivia trek about the place to various hideout locations, all the while discussing their failed relationship. The dialogue and tension between them is actually believable, but I couldn't connect to it, because it's all related to events that happened outside of this book and on which I couldn't get my head around the chronology. There's a very brief sequence of action towards the end, and then it finishes without resolving anything. And if this militia group is just made up of hillbillies, as is often told to us throughout the book, why is it so easy for them to capture FBI agents and private agents, and avoid capture? They're clearly the smarter people here!

Rubbish.

I read this. I probably won't read another one. It's just not really my bag I guess. Curiosity of Harlequin books now squelched.

I am in the minority on this one. I was underwhelmed. I found the story to be wordy, overly descriptive (The toaster took four slices at once. He put bread in the slots and pushed down the lever., repetitive in the use of a few phrases (snow is mentioned 76 times). It was geared more for suspense than romance but I found the end anticlimactic. Cade also had a few whiney moments but there were a couple really romantic declarations as well. There are many characters mentioned and at times you may feel you need a cast of characters bigger than the one in the front of the book. (“Rigsby’s here,” Dennison drawled. “You know Darcy—never leaves home without her. Brand is up with Quinn at his office.” “Delilah’s working the storm shift?” Olivia asked. “Along with Sara and Ivy.” “Sara’s Dennison’s wife—Ridge County sheriff’s deputy,” Olivia told Landry. “Delilah and Ivy are married to Brand and Calhoun, respectively.” “They’re both local cops over in Bitterwood.” “Y’all have some sort of law-enforcement dating service going on the side?” Landry asked softly as Olivia led him to the winding stairway leading to the second floor while the other men headed out of sight, shedding their outerwear as they went.)

Sample quotes:
They called you Bombshell Barbie.

“I know I drove you away. To this day, I don’t know how to trust you again, but I have missed you every single moment. The smell of you haunts my dreams. I can close my eyes and conjure up a vivid memory of the sun glinting off your hair that long weekend we spent on Assateague Island. I can feel the thunder of horse hooves beneath my feet when that wild herd ran past us on the beach. I can remember the way your laugh rang in my ears like music.” He hadn’t moved an inch closer, hadn’t reached out across the distance between them, but his voice caressed her, seduced her, until she felt a throb of desire pulsing low in her belly. “I didn’t come here to get you back. Or ask for another chance,” he said in a deep growl that made her think of long, hot summer nights naked in his arms. “But I don’t know if I could keep on living if you weren’t.

Others will enjoy it, but it was kind of a miss for me. I still think Paula Graves is a good author. I have enjoyed many of her other stories.

FBI agent Cade Landry had been captured, and tortured for 31 days before he was able to escape. He knows someone at the FBI set him up. He has been on the run for two years. He knows he is marked as a trader. Cade is tired of running, and wants to clear his name. There is only one person he can trust. Olivia Sharp was once his partner, and the one he loved. They had been in a relationship, sharing everything from work, to the bank account they had together. After running for so long, his funds were low. He had to hope that Olivia never closed that bank account. He was able to withdraw funds, and find out where Olivia lived. I loved Olivia. She never backed down from a fight, she could hold her own. Olivia was a really good agent. She was known to the bad guys, as well as the good guys as, bomb shell Barbie.

Throughout the story Olivia worked with Landry to find out who was behind the leak. They both wanted to clear his name. Olivia Sharp worked for the Gates. I loved how close the team of agents were, and how they supported one another. I loved the suspense, action, and romance.
