At minimum, 27 million Americans have thyroid disease. Despite being the majority of thyroid sufferers, women rarely know that thyroid problems increase their risk of pregnancy complications, including infertility, preeclampsia, miscarriage, premature delivery, and low birth weight. This awareness gap affects patients and doctors, who know little about the ramifications of an undiagnosed or under-treated thyroid condition on a mother and her unborn baby.
Founder of HypothyroidMom.com Dana Trentini and thyroid health advocate and bestselling author Mary Shomon have both endured challenges with pregnancies due to thyroid disorders. In Your Healthy Pregnancy with Thyroid Disease , they team up to give readers the answers they need. With personal stories and cutting-edge medical advice from leading health practitioners, the book explains how to recognize thyroid symptoms, get properly diagnosed/treated, manage thyroid problems during pregnancy, overcome thyroid-related infertility, and deal with postpartum challenges.
I have Hashimoto's Disease, and I learned so much valuable information from this book! I learned of so many things that are harmful to my thyroid, but also of many available treatments - even natural ones! I was actually surprised to know that my doctor was already practicing some of these things; I'm definitely thankful for her! I will definitely read this book again when I'm ready to have a baby since there is A LOT to be aware of, but I'm glad to know there's plenty of treatment options!
Super important book for any and all women wanting to conceive! It's about thyroid disease and thyroid dysfunction, but it really lays out how essential it is for ALL women to have regular testing done of their thyroid hormones before, during, and after pregnancy because of the variety of health issues -- including miscarriage, developmental issues, and more -- that can (and often do) happen when thyroid hormones are not monitored and adjusted right away, if needed.
There is so much in here that endocrinologists really don't tell you (and seems like they don't know). There's a lot to the human body we don't yet understand fully and the thyroid and everything it affects is one of them. This is a good book for those looking to take charge of their health if they feel their doctors just aren't listening.
