Sunshine Griffith can communicate with ghosts. Even more amazing, she recently discovered—with the help of her would-be boyfriend, Nolan—that she’s a luiseach, one of an ancient race of creatures who have lived among humans for centuries, protecting them from dark spirits and helping them move on to the afterlife. Now, Sunshine’s powers are awakening and she feels spirits everywhere—intense and sometimes overwhelming.
Eager to get her supernatural abilities under control, Sunshine agrees to begin training with her mentor, her estranged father Aidan. He takes her to an abandoned compound deep in the Mexican jungle. But what she learns there about her powers, and her family history, turns out to be more terrifying than Sunshine could have imagined. Can anything—Aidan’s experiments, her friendship with another luiseach named Lucio, even Nolan’s research—prepare Sunshine to face the frightening woman who haunts her dreams, and to finally learn the truth about the rift that threatens the future of the luiseach and all of humankind?
The stakes grow ever higher in this sequel to The Haunting of Sunshine Girl, revealing that Sunshine has to protect more than her own friends and family—she may be the key to saving the entire human race.

Sixth-period biology isn't where most people expect to see a ghost, but I'm not like most people. After making a note about the genetic similarities of rhesus monkeys to humans, I look up to see the old lady standing in the corner of our classroom who clearly doesn't belong there. She's short and at least ninety years old. Or maybe, I should say, she was at least ninety. She's wearing a pink terrycloth robe with embroidered flowers along the neckline. Her eyes are intense, small and sunken into her skull. She doesn't blink as she stares at me, and it sends shivers along my spine. Quickly I glance around the room to reassure myself I'm the only one who sees this. No on is acting like we have a sudden, oddly dressed guest lecturer, so I know she's a ghost. I'm the only one who can see her, and she needs my help.
Sunshine is a Luiseach, which means she helps spirits pass on and she can fight some of the demons that try to take them as well. She has a protector named Nolan, but he's not the fight em' kind of protector, he basically finds out things for her to try to help her along.
In this book, Sunshine meets her absentee father Aidan, but there is a very good reason he left her at birth with the wonderful mother that adopted her. <--- Read the book.
Sunshine seems to be having some trouble with ghosts and she's in danger from a woman, so her dad comes in to whisk her away. Seeing as how they are not human, he shows Sunshine's mom some of the things that have happened through his touch so she lets her go with him. He's going to train Sunshine in being able to handle more ghosts and try to keep her safe from the person that wants to harm her. They find out that Sunshine has more powers than they originally thought which I thought was cool.
There is two sightings of this creepy man in the book that reminded me of the dude in Poltergeist 2. He doesn't say anything, he just gives evil looks so I'm not sure what's up with him and maybe he will come out in another book. I think there is a third book coming out. I hope!
There are a few creepy things that go on in the book. I found the book to be interesting and I'm hoping to learn more about Sunshine and some of the other characters.
"Luiseach," I say quietly. "Luiseach." I repeat the word, louder this time. "It's an ancient species of guardians who've been around as long as humans have been living and dying. It's their job to help spirits move on after people die. And to exorcise spirits who've gone dark."
It can be hard for an author when writing a series to make latter books in the series as engaging and enjoyable as book 1. That's why I am glad to say that book two is even better.
At the end of The Haunting of Sunshine Girl, Sunshine had battled against a dark demon and come face to face with her mentor, her biological dad, Aidan. Reluctant to get into a relationship with the man that abandoned her sixteen years ago, Sunshine tries to ignore Aidan. But after a scary night at the hospital, Sunshine concedes that maybe she cannot tackle the spirit world alone. So, she marches off to Mexico to train with Aidan and his only luiseach ally, Lucio. As Sunshine delves deeper into her family background, it is unveiled to her just as big her role is. But back home, a mysterious woman is watching in the shadows and her eyes are set on Nolan. Will Sunshine be able to save him before it is too late?
I absolutely enjoyed learning more about the world that Sunshine is a part of and her evolving relationship with Aidan. If I had to roll my eyes at any part, it's that Lucio is also attracted to Sunshine. *Sigh* Why must every book targeted at a YA audience involve a love triangle? I'm Team Nolan all the way, so Ms. McKenzie, leave these kids alone!! I recall as a teenager just being happy if ONE guy looked my way.
The book ended on a cliffhanger and so I am really hoping that book three arrives in early 2017!
First, I have to say thank you to the author for sending me the ARC of this to review. I really enjoyed the first one, which I had received an ARC of from the publisher without even requesting. When I heard this was out, but I hadn't seen an ARC yet, I tweeted #booksfortrade asking if anyone had one. I was lucky enough to have the author see my tweet and offer to send me one. Have I mentioned before that authors are my rock stars? :-)
I've always loved ghost stories and going to haunted places. You can read more about this as well as my review of the first book, The Haunting of Sunshine Girl, HERE. The first story had a really spooky plot. But we also learned some things about the main character, Sunshine, that are what really drive the story in this sequel. If you haven't read the first one, and still plan to, you should do two things: click on the link above to go read that review, and then come back and scroll quickly to the bottom of this post, so you don't read any spoilers for the first book, and then enter the giveaway! Now, on with my review of the second book.
We left off the last book with Sunshine finding out that the man she's met named Aidan is someone from her past. He is actually her birth father. He's come to teach her about what she is, a luiseach, someone who is able to help spirits move on, to keep them from becoming dark spirits, and if they do become dark, they can help protect humans from them. In fact that is part of what Sunshine had to do in the first book, work with a spirit that had not been moved on. In fact Aidan had kept the spirit there to give her the test. At the beginning of this book Sunshine is overwhelmed by the spirits from a car wreck that has just happened. They cause her to get so cold that it is a good thing she was at the hospital where her mother worked so that they could take her in and help her. It is at this point that Aidan steps in and introduces himself to Sunshine's mother and tells her what is going on. He proposes that in order to help Sunshine learn to deal with this type of situation she needs to go to one of the luiseach training centers located in Mexico. There's no one else there, as all of the other luiseach don't agree with Aidan, and they want Sunshine gotten rid of.
While in the compound which is located in a jungle area, Sunshine will remember things about her mother, and find that her mother is on the other side of the fight. she has had to leave her friend/protector Nolan behind. Which on the one hand is a good thing, because she has had to tell him that whenever they get close, something about him repels her. Even though the two of them definitely have an attraction to each other. But it isn't just Sunshine and her father at the training center, there is also an attractive boy about her age named Lucia, another luiseach. He is being trained by Aidan, and is on Aidan's side because of what happened to his family. During the training time it will come out that Aidan may be actually working on something else, and that all his training may not be quite as straight-forward and normal of training for a luiseach. She will miss Nolan, who will be dealing with his own findings back home, as he tries to help Sunshine in the only way he knows how, the thing he is best at, research. The ending will leave Sunshine at a crossroads of how to go on. Is what Aidan was working on something that she needs to help him with? Or is the other group, the ones that want her gone, do they really know what is best?
While this really wasn't the same ghost story as the first one, it still had some parts with ghosts that were definitely creepy as you read the details of those ghosts. The main house of the training compound did have a definite creepiness to it, especially the room with the baby bed where Sunshine had been when she was a baby. I really enjoyed learning more about the background of the luiseach, and exactly what the story was behind Sunshine's birth, and why she'd been given up for adoption. I like all the characters, even the new ones, and by like, I mean the ones you are supposed to hate or dislike, I really did! I will definitely be purchasing this title for my school library to give to those students who have read the first one, also in my library.
I've got a giveaway for this book, or the first one on my blog, Lisa Loves Literature
3.5 stars actually. Nice book to read in an off day from work , if you loved the first one In this trilogy , you'll love this one as well, there is everything: romance, ghosts, demons , crazy mothers that try to kill you, mentors and did I mention ... ghost !! Recommend it if you are looking for a fast read and are interested in the supernatural.
The second installment in Sunshine Girl series moves at a thrilling pace with more twists than a foggy back alley—and ends poised on the edge of a cliff. A potent tale of a 16-year old girl with intriguing powers and a big heart who falls in love against all odds while defeating enemies and setting trapped souls free. The chapters bound forward at breakneck speed, but don’t be alarmed—that dizzy, pleasurable sensation that you’re experiencing is just your brain slowly expanding and exploding from all the wild, magnificent surging suspense that is actually an invocation to everything that is hidden, haunted and forgotten. A cutting-edge gem in the oversaturated genre of YA ghost story/paranormal/horror fiction. Highly recommend.

THE REVIEW
Why this book?
I enjoyed the first book in the series
What I thought
I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't as good as the first ,but it still had me flipping though the pages like crazy woman. In this one Sunshine has come more fully into her powers which I found interesting. I was also scared there for a bit that there was going to be a love triangle, I was like "oh no not again" but it thankfully that wasn't the case. With that said we needed less Lucio and more Nolan. It was nice though to find out more about Sunshines birth parents. The ending though OMG I need the next book! Overall an enjoyable read.
I won this from Goodreads/author in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed the sequel of following our beloved Sunshine Girl! This book was just as good as the first for me and usually the first books are always the best, but this one might have been better. Sunshine makes a very adult decision at the age of sixteen to go off with her father and strengthen her powers. She could've chosen to stay behind and not learn anything. But she knew the right thing to do was to learn to control her powers after a few near death experiences. It was a wake up call for her and her loved ones. There seems to be a barrier between Sunshine and Nolan. At first she decides that there's no way she can like a boy who makes her feel sick. But perhaps she feels this way because she does have feelings for him. Butterflies in the tummy? Sunshine is not the best person when it comes to romance even after reading her Jane Austen novels. So she leaves Nolan feeling crushed although he doesn't show it to her. Sunshine finally meets her father and just like anyone would Sunshine feels like she would ask him a million questions. But I feel that she has so much anger built up that she doesn't know exactly what to do with it. Plus I feel that Sunshine is quite a mature character despite her awkwardness and she knows how to handle her own feelings. Everyone says that Sunshine is very emotional and sensitive, but I don't feel that way about her character at all. With the spirits she is sensitive, but I feel that she has a good grip on her emotions for a sixteen year old. And actually I like that better than trying to make us believe she's an emotional teenage girl. Near the end of the book Sunshine tells everyone all the things she needs to before her big sacrifice. She and Nolan finally confess their feelings (yay!), but she still feels sick around him. I still think it's just the butterflies. Sunshine makes an ultimate sacrifice to save everyone and by everyone I mean EVERYONE! Her family, friends, the spirits, etc. She just knows in her heart it's the right thing to do. The cover is also very well done and it's just so perfect for the book. If someone reads this they'll get the idea and I just love the haunting yet beautiful look of it! Now I have to wait until next year for the final book! I'm very excited for it and I will be looking for that one! I'm so happy I got the chance to read this book and I look forward to the final book of our heroines story. Also I think Sunshine may be one of my favorite literary characters.
The Haunting of Sunshine Girl series is a fun, entertaining series that's a breath of fresh air. In a market flooded with true to life contemporaries and heavy fantasy novels, paranormal young adult reads feel as though they are too few and far between and Sunshine Girl brilliantly bridges that gap. In the same vain as Anna Dressed in Blood, The Awakening of Sunshine Girl follows the story of Sunshine who is still coming to terms with being branded a Luiseach, a role in which she sees spirits of those who have passed and has the ability to guide them from our world. But unlike her fellow Luiseach, Sunshine's abilities to feel each spirit and their lives is not only what sets her apart. She is the last Luiseach to have been born, on the day of her birth women miscarried and have been unable to conceive in the past sixteen years, dividing the Luiseach community and igniting a war between the segregated factions.
We also see Sunshine taken away from her mother to be cared for and trained, leaving Nolan behind. I enjoyed the lack of romance, not that Nolan and Sunshine are officially together as she cannot touch him without experiencing excruciating pain. But the separation element allowed Sunshine to grow as a character and also establish why she was abandoned as a newborn child.
Where The Haunting of Sunshine Girl was all about establishing Sunshine as a character and learning about her abilities. Sunshine is a girl who is still unsure of herself, often lacking in confidence but while making her relatable despite her abilities. It also felt like a more mature installment in the series, which I really enjoyed. I missed Nolan's character, as he is absent from the main storyline but readers still see glimpses of their separation through Sunshine's dreamscape, a new development with her abilities.
The Haunting of Sunshine Girl series is captivating, entertaining and has invigorated the young adult paranormal genre. With the emphasis on Sunshine, her place in the world and not reliant on romance, it's a breath of fresh air. The Awakening of Sunshine Girl is often brutal and fierce, introducing a horror type suspense to the young and young at heart. Really enjoyed it.
The Awakening of Sunshine Girl is the second book in The Haunting of Sunshine Girl series, and picks up shortly after the first book finished. If you have yet to read the first book, turn back now – to really understand and appreciate this one, you need to have read the first book in the series.
Much like the first book, The Awakening of Sunshine Girl gives you exactly what you would expect from a young adult horror novel. It is not a terrifying read, but it does have the constant vibe of there being something more. The supernatural world is ever present, and we get to experience the good and the bad of it.
What I really liked about this second book was how much the world grew. We were given basic details in the first book, we got to see glimpses of limited aspects, and things grew a lot in this second book. The supernatural world was expanded in this one, along with the characters. Things I was interested in with the first book became bigger, things I was curious about were explained. As a second book, this one takes what we already know and develops into something more.
Then it leaves us hanging for the third book.
Many things were introduced to us that left us wanting more, left us desiring answers, but it was the final chapter that really leaves you desperate for the next book. It’s quite the cliff-hanger, leaving you curious as to how everything will come together, and you’ll quickly grab the third book.
A fun second book, well worth reading if you enjoyed the first.
I loved seeing where this story is going. At places it was a lot of info dumping and got a little slow, something that can happen with middle books. This also threw off the pacing a bit, specially has the chapter kept starting and stoping.
I can't wait to read where all of this is leading us to.
I loved this book and the only reason that it doesn’t have five stars is because towards the end the book seemed to really slow down. I’m not sure if it was just because I didn’t have as much time to read or if it was the story itself but I struggled picking this book back up towards the end! I do know I loved the story being told, I adore Sunshine and the characters that have developed in this middle book of the trilogy, and I cannot wait to read the third and final book in the trilogy!
I love the fact that this book didn’t suffer from middle book syndrome. Book 1 in the series “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl” was a fun and suspenseful read. Now finishing the second book in the series “The Awakening of Sunshine Girl” I have to say, still has me hooked to read the final book. What an ending! 😊 I recommend it for anyone who likes quirky ghost stories that will leave you with a cliffhanger almost every time.
Originally posted here: https://heatherreviews.wordpress.com/... _________________ The second instalment of the Sunshine Girl series, The Awakening of Sunshine Girl picks up where the first book left off. Based on the popular YouTube series, Sunshine Girl is a thrilling paranormal ride for young adult readers with plenty of ghosts, demons, and teenage drama.
After passing her test to prove her luiseach powers, Sunshine must make the choice between trying to work through things on her own – with a little help from Nolan – or accept the help of her estranged father, who just happens to be her mentor and the orchestrator of her test. When she finds herself overwhelmed by the ghosts that are now a constant presence in her life, Sunshine reluctantly accepts Aiden’s help and suddenly finds herself far away from everything she’s come to know since her move to Washington.
I was thoroughly scared and enthralled by the first book in this series and the cliffhanger ending left me almost screaming at the book because I wanted – and needed – more. I was super excited when I saw that this book was coming out and jumped at the chance to read it as soon as possible.
The thing that I found the most interesting with this book was the new relationships that we were able to discover. The characters that were very prominent in the first book – Nolan and Kat, Sunshine’s mom – feature very little in this one, whereas her father, Aiden, features very prominently. Going from Sunshine’s strong bond with her mom in the first book to her non-existent relationship with her father was a bit strange, but it helped to build the unfamiliar feeling of everything that is going on.
Digging deeper into the history of the luiseach, and Sunshine herself, there’s some shocking revelations that were like bombs going off. Poor Sunshine takes some hits as she realises that perhaps she has a bigger part to play in what’s happening between the luiseach and demons and everything else that’s going wrong in the world right now than she had originally thought.
I love the lore that we learn in this book. Finding out how the luiseach used to work and what they were trying to accomplish made me feel really sorry that it had all gone so wrong. I wish that we were able to see what it had been like in the golden age of luiseach.
Once again, the ending had me wishing for more and I can’t believe we’re going to have to wait another year or so at least to find out what happens next. This book was like a deep breath before a storm: it was exciting and nerve-wrecking throughout but exploded at the end.
Big things are in store for the next book and I, for one, can not wait to see how things go next.
I received an arc copy through Goodreads giveaways.
The sequel to The Haunting of Sunshine Girl picks up soon after the end of the first book. Sunshine is still learning how to handle being a luiseach and how to help spirits move on. When Sunshine learns that her father is her mentor he convinces her to let him help her learn how to control her abilities.
There are not as many creepy moments in this book as there were in the first book, but there are a lot of interesting interactions that Sunshine has with spirits that are seeking help to move on. There are a lot of revelations about who Sunshines parents are and why she was abandoned by them. Not everything is what it seemed in the first book. When Sunshine learns that the luiseach population is going extinct she finds out that many people believe she is the cause for the dwindling population. As a result many people would like to see Sunshine dead so it's hard to know who to trust. There are some interesting chapters from a character who would like nothing more than to kill Sunshine and will stop at nothing to do it, even using Nolan as leverage.
This was a quick enjoyable read. The ending leaves you on a cliffhanger that I am interested to see where it leads to.
Based on the Youtube series, which I still have to watch is Book #2 in the series about Sunshine Griffiths. Sunshine was abandoned as a baby on the footsteps of the local hospital, and now she is sixteen she is experiencing new and weird things. She has now learned that she is part of a rare race called luseach and that she is the last one of the line. Her biological father has returned to collect Sunshine so that she can start learning how to fight and expand her skills. While doing so on the complex he owns, Sunshine will learn about the awful events that happened sixteen years ago and caused a massive rift in the luseach community and why she is now the most hunted one and why a lot of people including her biological mother want her dead. While training, though, it seems that someone in Sunshine's life has been playing as a double agent and Sunshine's best friend and mentor Nolan is in trouble. Can Sunshine save her protector and guardian or will that put her in more danger than she could ever anticipate? Of course, with all this happening in her life Sunshine is still a sixteen-year-old girl and with that comes hormones, and boy crushes and Sunshine's is directed at her protector - but every time she touches him she burns? Can she be with the one she loves or is there a reason they can never be a couple? If you love paranormal romance and ghost stories with mythology chucked in the mix, then check out Book #2 The Awakening of Sunshine Girl by Paige McKenzie.
I think with this one, I wanted to love it more than I actually did. It wasn't as good as the first one. I think this was a case of second book syndrome though and I believe the third and final book will be better. Here is to hoping!!
When I saw The Awakening of Sunshine Girl on NetGalley I knew I had to read this, I was eager to find out what happens next for Sunshine in her personal life, as well as her new powers. The Awakening of Sunshine Girl picks up after the events in the previous book, Sunshine is still learning how to be a Luiseach, how to deal with everything that comes with it, as well as going to school and being a 'normal' teenager. Her dad, Aidan, is still trying to persuade Sunshine to train with him, for him to be her mentor, and he goes about it in sneaky ways to ensure she says yes. It was at this point that I made the decision that I did not like him at all.
The Awakening of Sunshine Girl was an interesting read. We get to see what Sunshine is really capable of when she is taken to Llevar la Luz to train. Llevar la Luz is a sanctuary for all Luiseach to live, and train, but it now stands deserted and alone, it is here where Aidan lives with Nola, a fellow Luiseach. We also learn about the history of Luiseach a bit more, and learn why Sunshine was abandoned as a baby. Underneath the main plot of Sunshine learning about her inheritance, there is also someone after Sunshine, wanting to kill her. We get glimpses into thier side of the story and what they are doing to get closer to Sunshine. For me it was quite obvious who this person was so I wasn't too surprised when it was revealed but I did like how it was done.
I really enjoyed the previous book in this series, but for me The Awakening of Sunshine Girl just didn't have the spark of the previous one. I wanted to see more ghosts and hauntings mixed in with Sunshine learning about her powers, and although we do get to see an aspect of that, it just wasn't enough for me. However I loved getting to see what she was capable of and how powerful she is, the ending was one of the best and worst endings of all time. I loved how it all fell into place and ended, I just don't like the cliffhanger we have been left on.
Final Verdict Although there wasn't as much hauntings as I'd hoped for, there was enough of the paranormal aspect to keep me entertained. I just need to find out what happens next.
I don't remember when I first saw The Haunting of Sunshine Girl, maybe on Barnes and Noble's website or even their shelves. All I knew was, the cover was unique, off in a way and the girl was lovely. I tend to gravitate towards pretty things... as marketing is supposed to incite, especially if there's a hideous creature, I'd have probably wanted it even more! LOL Then as the book sat on my shelf, in queue, I found out The Awakening of Sunshine Girl was on the way. So I pre-ordered it and waited. While waiting, I conducted research on Paige McKenzie and discovered: I live under a rock - she's so famous! (an internet sensation!)
Since I finished the first book so fast, I knew I'd run through this one just as quick. The Awakening of Sunshine Girl picked up where book one left off. Well, right after the holiday. It didn't move as well as the first; it was rather slow but I held on, knowing the ending would be so worth it. It's also obvious, there will be another book before this story is over. In the second book, Sunshine gains a lot of knowledge and experience. There's an odd plot going on in this book and I almost lost interest. This one just didn't keep me riveted to the pages as book one, but there was a lot to take in. I also didn't understand why they had to go across the world to 'train'.
*For the full review and review of book one: http://tinyurl.com/zk3x9ju **Books are from my personal library for review.
I'm giving this a 3.5 even though I really wanted to give it a 5.
There were just so many things that didn't make sense to me. There were some things that were also very repetitive and at times even predictable. It was definitely a lot better than the first one. The first one was anticlimactic for me, this one was a LITTLE better. Keyword: little. It didn't put me in awe as I expected it to.
I also wish the ending made a little bit more sense. It ended off on a cliffhanger (I'll give the author a point for a well done cliffhanger), but instead of making the book strong, it made it seem a little unprofessional, for lack of a better word, to me. Usually, cliffhangers are good because they sometimes answer the questions you had while reading the book AND THEN give you new questions that you'll hope to find the answers to in the NEXT book. This cliffhanger, though, just made the entire book feel unfinished.
I wasn't satisfied with how it ended at all. I'm by no means averse to cliffhangers that leave you wanting more or even sad endings. I just honestly closed this book and found that a lot of things were just unresolved. I don't understand why the author ended this book the way she ended it. But despite all of that, I will still be picking up the third book. I do want to find out what happens next. I just really hope it doesn't leave me even more confused.
“The Awakening of Sunshine Girl” is a great follow-up to “The Haunting of Sunshine Girl.” It has all of the humor and chills of the original, while furthering the story of how Sunshine came to be.
The plot breezes along at an easy to read pace that doesn’t slow down. All of the favorite characters from the first book are back, just as enjoyable as before, along with the addition of some new ones. All of the history of the Luiseach was fascinating and made me want to learn more.
I wish I could say more but almost everything I can add would spoil the story in some way. I’ll leave you with this: you’ll probably wish you had the next book already in your hands when you turn the last page.
“The Awakening of Sunshine Girl” is a good choice for all of those who enjoy a good ghost story that, while it includes disturbing imagery, actually falls into the clean category. Only minor language and a few kisses are involved. It’s also perfect for reluctant readers, though be sure they begin with the first in the series!
This review is based upon a complimentary copy provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I liked this book even better than the first one! Now I have to wait a year until the last one. Ugh. So, in this book, Sunshine goes with Aiden to Mexico to learn how to control her powers. While she is there, she learns more about her past. Who is the bad guy? Can Sunshine actually be and do what they want and hope she can do? More ghosts and demons and drama abound in this second book in the Sunshine girl series. This is another fun story to read. I received this book free to review from Netgalley and I highly recommend it!
I love these books! I ordered it the day it came out! This book is filled with mystery, and surprise and love and action and most importantly it is filled with plain awesomeness. I finished this book seconds ago and I can't really find the right words to describe it because of the reverberating shock given off by that unbelievable cliff-hanger!!!! Ahhh! I don't know how I'm going to wait an entire year for the next book. It will be a struggle.
I took my time getting to and starting this book because I knew once I started it would be hard to stop and I was right! Book two was excellent and I enjoyed every minute of it. I can't believe we have to wait a whole year until the next book comes out!
