Kyle Henry has a new name, a new school, and a new life -- one without the shadow of the Bonebreaker hanging over him. It's been a year since his serial killer father's execution, and it finally looks like things are turning around for Kyle.

Until he recognizes the girl sitting in the back row in homeroom.

Naomi Steadman is immediately intrigued by Killdeer Academy's newcomer. She does not know he is the son of the man who murdered her mother. What she does know is she and Kyle have a connection with each other -- and a spark that Kyle continues to back away from.

Soon after Kyle's arrival, the death count on campus starts to rise. Someone is set on finishing what the Bonebreaker started, and murdering ghosts from the past may be the only thing that can stop the spree.

Told in alternating viewpoints, Kat Ellis's tale of mystery and horror is full of broken bonds and new beginnings.

This book had SO. MUCH. POTENTIAL. But it let so many opportunities pass it by.

The synopsis was super enticing—Kyle, the son of notorious serial killer The Bonebreaker, is uprooted and sent to a boarding school (that used to be an asylum, thank you) after his father's execution. There, he meets and falls for Naomi, the daughter of his father's last victim, but it can't be a coincidence that they're both at this school, could it?

Kyle tries to keep his true identity a secret as he falls in love with Naomi, but suddenly people around the school are dying wherever Kyle and Naomi go. Could it be that someone wants to finish what The Bonebreaker started?

I mean... come on, that sounds pretty good. Oh, but the letdown is real. This is a pretty flat pancake given that it's marketed with some pretty lofty "horror" and "mystery" tag phrases.

It was lacking in terms of clues or big events, relying mostly on very specific scenes meant to explore the romance aspect instead. And the history of The Bonebreaker and Kyle's experience of his father were almost nonexistent. This wasn't the boarding school horror I hoped it would be. It was too heavy on the fluff and the romance and far too weak on the thrills.

This is not a horror novel. It is a romance set against a mildly mysterious backdrop. Obviously we're not expecting adult horror, but a little flavour would have been nice.

Let me tell you something about this book: I had an actual nightmare the evening after I read it. This is the kind of amazing story where the characters are still in your head a week later. And the concept is completely fresh--different than anything I've ever come across. The characters are so authentic and the plot so intricate, that you'll feel all the worry and and intensity that the characters do. I cannot recommend it enough. It goes down in my collection as a forever-favorite.

This book caught my attention as soon as I saw that it was about the son of a serial killer. I loved the Jasper Dent (I Hunt Killers) series, and was hoping to explore the whole issue of genetics vs. free will vs. how you were raised. This wasn't exactly that type of book, it was more of a mystery book, but I was okay with that-- because I love mysteries!!

We get off to a slow start when we learn that Kyle is going to start a new life in a Pennsylvania boarding school. Then, dun dun dun, the daughter of his father's final victim is in his first class. This cannot be a coincidence, right?? Of course, Kyle doesn't think it's a good idea to say "Hey Naomi, I'm the Bonebreaker's only son. Wanna be BF4E?" So he doesn't tell her at all. Since they have a mutual attraction thing going on, it gets harder and harder for him to keep the secret. And when bodies start turning up, Kyle knows his identity won't be secret for long...

I didn't LOVE this book. I liked it. It felt a lot like a 90's thriller, which I'm a big fan of (and totally think we need books like that always), but I kind of had higher hopes for this book. I wanted less mystery and more psychological. There were a lot of characters and I have to say I was a fan of all of them but one. Addison was all types of terrible. She was mean girl/frenemy on steroids and I think the book would have been better if she was removed all-together.

OVERALL: A cool YA Mystery with an even cooler setting-- boarding school that used to be an asylum. It involves generations of people dealing with evil and tragedy which I found super interesting. While I wished there was MORE on the psychological side, I enjoyed reading the book and would recommend for someone who just wants to read a mystery.

This book kept me guessing and was just perfect! The romance thread within the story was brilliantly done, with high stakes all around. I love this book!

Can we just stare at the cover in awe for a moment?
Ok, I'll get on to the review.
I have had this on my bookshelf for a long while along with a mile-high pile of other books I've still been meaning to read. Trust me, I've tried telling myself to read the books I have before adding more, but my brain and my googly eyes and grubby hands never can refuse more books. Indeed I'll be the old broad in a creepy looking house with mazes of bookshelves and books drinking wine in ice wearing hufflepuff attire.
Oops, sorry, rambling again. I tend to do that during lack of sleep.
I must say this read was worth a sleepless night. Tried to get some shut-eye but couldn't get this book off of my mind, so couldn't help staying up to read what happened next.
This book kept me at the edge of my seat. I felt for the characters. I enjoyed the parts of humor and the realism in the story.
This is one of those books where you can't wait to see what happens to the end, yet you want it to keep going.
I really enjoyed Breaker and will be putting this on my book favorites shelf.

I really liked this one. There was a pretty decent story with just enough background, the characters were developed, and it moved along quickly. Naomi's mother was murdered ten years previously. She lived with her grandparents and attended boarding school. Kyle and his mother Olive have just moved to town and Kyle is enrolled in the same school. When he meets Naomi in class, he realizes she is the daughter of his father's final victim. He tries to stay away from her, but they end up falling for each other. Some tense moments and great suspense!

This is a young adult mystery and horror book for ages thirteen and up. Kyle Henry has a new life. His serial killer father has been executed. He is attracted to Naomi Steadman and recognizes her as the daughter of the woman his father murdered. There is the past to be dealt with and new beginnings. This is not a book that I could recommend for young adults. I received this book free through Goodreads Giveaways for an honest review.

This book had a lot of potential but unfortunately didn’t really deliver on it. I loved the set up in the beginning but I feel along the way it just lost depth and became a little too far fetched. The ending was also not my favorite. But an easy read with decent pacing.

It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of Kat’s work. Blackfin Sky was fantastic and Purge left me craving more (read both ASAP). The same can definitely be said for Breaker.

A guessing game from start to finish, Breaker is full of suspense and atmospheric tension. The story centres on Kyle, whose mother drops him off at a new boarding school with a new name. Why? Because his father was a very well-known, vicious serial killer, and let’s face it, who wants to carry that bag around with them. But if he thinks simply changing his name and moving across the country will give him some kind of peace, yeah… Not going to happen. Especially not when his father’s only surviving victim happens to attend his new school. The guy doesn’t get the chance to take a proper breath before things start taking a turn for the weird and then pretty soon, the dangerous.

The thing I loved the most about Breaker was the characters. They were so layered and well-developed, and I appreciated that Kyle had so much depth and inner conflict. The same can be said for Naomi, and she’s definitely the type of person I’d hang out with, had she been real of course. I loved Naomi and Kyle together and their chemistry and interactions were definitely a highlight for me. Kat did such great justice to the alternating POVs and it elevated the story and its conflicts. The two were so obviously different that you couldn’t help but fall straight into the current POV the second you reached the start of a new chapter.

I can’t wait for more from Kat, and luckily we don’t have to wait too long. Her next short story, Twins of Blackfin, will be a part of the Three Strikes Anthology released pretty soon. I’m so freaking excited. Can’t wait.

- I received a copy of this book from the publisher via the Goodreads giveaway

"Breaker" is a highly entertaining, addictive book told in alternating POVs. Our first narrator, Kyle, has just moved from his hometown in North Carolina, to a boarding school in Pennsylvania, one year after his serial killer father has been executed. Eager to use this chance as a fresh start, Kyle thinks that he'll be able to put his past behind him, until he meets Naomi, our second narrator. Naomi's grandparents have worked at the boarding school for years, and were able to take her in when her mother was murdered by the serial killer Bonebreaker- aka Kyle's father. Kyle quickly begins to learn that this seemingly random meeting was anything but, as two people are killed in exactly the same way his dad treated his victims.

While the plot had some overall flaws and believability issues, I was hooked pretty much from the first page. The writing was easy to read and there was never really a good part to take a break at; I ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting.

The author did a really good job at keeping each POV separate and distinct, and both main characters were given such interesting back stories. I was particularly intrigued by Kyle's relationship with his mom, and wish that had been explored more. The relationship between the main characters (while obviously implausible) was fairly well developed, and the twist at the end was predictable but satisfying. Finally, I enjoyed the way the author interspersed aspects of the original crime in between chapters (newspaper articles, 911 transcripts, etc).

With an fast paced plot and characters I liked, this book was addictive from the beginning. On the other hand, I would have liked if it went a little deeper on the psychological thriller side (Kyle and Naomi's past trauma, as well as the killer's thoughts at the end) were touched upon but could have been explored a bit more to add a bit more complexity.

In all, I'm really glad that I had a chance to read this book, as YA mysteries aren't really a genre that I would think to pick up on my own. This was an unexpectedly good book, and I would highly recommend reading it.

A solid 3.5 stars. I got this book at BookCon this year and I'm glad I did. I enjoyed it as a fun mystery with just enough creepiness. Naomi wasn't the most believable character, and the bit about the grandpa didn't really need to be in there? It made me more sad than anything. A quick read and I appreciate getting it for free! (I have to say that I hate the cover though. I would never have picked this off the shelf).

I received an ARC from Netgalley.

I enjoyed the book, but the changing points of view was constantly confusing to me. I finally noticed that at the beginning of a chapter, it would tell you whose point of view that chapter would be focused on. However, I rarely notice chapters when I'm reading, so it would take me a bit to catch up.

overall a good young adult book.

I won this Advanced Reader's edition uncorrected proof in a Goodreads giveaway.

This is a fiction story about high school kids, with sort of scary and sort of mystery tones about it. Although it is an easy read, I have to admit that there were some parts that went over my head. The main characters are likeable. Kyle Henry and Naomi Steadman alternate telling their stories in alternating chapters which keeps the action moving. And there are some unusual [weird?] people in the plot to keep the reader guessing what will happen next.

The author appears to have written a previous book which I would be interested in reading also as she writes well and can keep one involved in the action.

A very engaging YA novel. I liked the switching POVs and the unfolding mystery. Some stuff was a bit obvious and there were a couple of very small loose threads but on the whole I enjoyed the premise and how it unfolded. The concept of a young man trying to get out from underneath his murderer father’s shadow only to fall for the last victim’s daughter? Gotta love it. Because when do you tell her? How hard to do you try to stay away? And now death is according and some Deja vu crap is popping up? Is it a copy cat? Does someone know his secret? It did not end how I thought it would but that’s good in the way that it wasn’t too predictable. Definitely kept me wanting to read more the whole way through.

Foo Fighters - Walk

Kyle Henry, our main character, had a tough life. From an early age he learnt to not trust and to hide. Living with the stigma due to his father identity. His father was a serial killer .A year after his dad's execution, Kyle sees an opportunity to start over, with a new name. His life is now his to control. Or so he believes it to be.
description

But life never gives you anything just like that. Soon after his moving away from his past life he meets with Naomi. he recognizes her. Sitting in the back rooom in class, it's his destiny and his past. All found in the face of a girl.
Naomi Steadman is a person whose life was stolen. Her mother was murdered a year ago by Kyle's father...while she had to witness it all happening...
description

And even though the perpetrator has been executed, she still cannot go past that event.
When Kyle moves and founds himself in Naomi's high school, the teens are immediately intrigued by one another.
They want to know each other but that is not easy. It is not easy at all.
Kyle being the son of the man who murdered Naomi's mother is not a small issue to deal with.(At least for the boy)
Caught up between desire and their past, Naomi and Kyle try to let the past begone and seek to create a future where they are allowed to live freely.
description

Kyle knows better than approaching the girl who can upturn once again his life but he cannot refuse the undeniable connection between them. Naomi on the other hand knows nothing and that single fact might change that boy's life...for better or for worse. that is for you to find out.
Perplex relationship problems aside, there are murders starting to happen around the two teens. Someone wants to finish what the Bonebreaker started and causes Kyle and Naomi to work together to find the criminal that is set to make them relive the worst time of their short life. The murders occur but it is hard to tell who is behind it and more importantly why.
description

Breaker is a book about the past. You cannot run from it. it will always catch up on you whether you want it or not. And whether you run from it or stand and face it, it is all up to you. You can let it command and control every aspect of your life, crush you down by reliving your guilt and your past mistakes. Or you can accept that you are human. that bad things happen to everyone with no criteria or logic. the moment you accept that weakness that is the time you will be set free. But being free is not the end. No, it is the weapon you shall yeild to anyone who wishes to bring you down. Defeat is not necesserily a bad thing is you learn to learn from it.
description

This book is kind of a dark read.
Kyle, Naomi, the students of the Killdeer Academy and a murderer on the loose will grab your attention from page one. You shall feel fear, angst, confusion, anger and a bit of sadness about how cruel of a game, life can play at some points.
description

Nevertheless, i had some issues with the Breaker. Especially conserning Naomi. She is an idiot. a kindhearted idiot but an idiot still. The forbidden "romance" was pleasing but let's face it. If there was a tiny possibility of this happening in real life, the outcome would NOT be the same. As for Kyle's family...man that was a different kind of crazy but you know, family is family no matter what. There are times you want to break free and convince yourself that you are adopted or have absolutely no relationship with them but believe it or not, that doesn't happen.
Nonetheless, family in the end of the day doesn't define your whole self/identity. It influences it. It causes it to change both in a good and bad way. You cannot erase the bond but that doesn't mean you cannot be different.
description

All in all Breaker is an interesting read, especially for fans of ya mystery and detective books. I, for once, am not a great fan of the genre but still enjoyed a great part of the book.

I see a lot of negativity but, I personally enjoyed this book! First off I love mysteries and this really kept my attention. I just wanted to read more and more and now I'm finished, sadly. I liked everything about the book; the plot, the characters, the twist. You also need a really imaginative brain because this adds to the spookiness. And it got a bit spicy a few times 👀 I would recommend!! 👍🏾

A really good book to pick up. I think this was possibly the fastest I have read a book of its size. All of the foreshadowing throughout the book really links together the story and finding out who was behind the killings really shocked me. Definitely the best book I have picked up from the library so far.
