Mysterious, thought-provoking, and romantic!

A Million Times Goodnight is a young adult novel that reminds us that every choice has a consequence and sometimes those consequences have far-reaching ramifications.

The characters are young, fearless, and at times irresponsible. The writing style is unique and delves into the idea of parallel universes by utilizing alternating chapters to present the different "what if" scenarios. And the plot is a fast-paced, twisty thrill ride full of adventure, heartbreak, and surprises.

It is, ultimately, a story about life, love, secrets, deception, betrayal, teenage drama, and friendship.

A Million Times Goodnight is a very intriguing novel that at times is quite moving. And although I didn't connect with the characters as much as I would have liked to I think teens, the target demographic, would definitely be able to identify and relate to their behaviour, mindset, and choices more readily.

“We’re with you, Hadley,” Mia said. “No matter what.”



This was an okay story, but I found it confusing and slow.

Hadley came across as quite determined in this story, but she also did some really stupid things. Stealing your boyfriend’s car is never a good idea, no matter how many naked pictures of you he’s posted on facebook.

“You are going to get in my car and drive it back to Oak Grove. You hear me?”



The storyline in this was a bit jumpy. We kept getting chapters where Hadley was driving to Florida with Josh, interspersed with chapters where Hadley was still at home in Ohio, and it wasn’t possible for both of those scenarios to be true, which left me wondering what the heck was going on! I also really wanted to know what had happened to Penny, and the events that led to her death, but the pace just seemed too slow, and the answers weren’t coming anytime fast!

“No one in this town will ever forgive you, Josh Lane. You killed her. What else do you expect?”



There was a little bit of romance in this, but not a lot, and I have to say that I much preferred Josh to Ben.

“You let a murderer get into my car, Hadley.”

The ending to this was okay, and it did answer the question of which of the two stories we’d been reading was right, I can’t say I was overly impressed by the explanation though.

A Million Times Goodnight is one of those reads that is hard to review, simply because it is hard to describe. At times, hard to tell if it was a great read, a hard read, or maybe even an indifferent read.

If you have ever watched the movie Sliding Doors with Gwenyth Paltrow then you might have a feel for this read in the aspect of parallel universes and the what ifs'.

Throw in a mystery, a death, and one wild night (instead of days of events) and in a nut shell, you have this book.

I think what makes this story so very hard to review is the fact that while I liked it, I never really felt anything for it, as in, I never completely cared for the characters. That connection that most of us, as readers crave, was never there for me. But the mystery aspect of it, wanting to know all the secrets that lead up to the night in question and one exactly a year previous, that part is what really had me turning the pages.

In short, this story piqued my curiosity more than anything and if the mystery aspect hadn't been there, I don't think I would have enjoyed this story anywhere near as much as I did without it. But it was there, and it was interesting and while some of it was predictable, it all wasn't.

Overall this was a read that kept me interested and engaged and was a quick read that I did enjoy.

I'm not really sure how to rate or even begin to talk about this book. I really liked it, that's for sure. I did have some minor problems with it, but nothing that I couldn't handle.

I, personally, have never read a book quite like this one. This book is written in a very peculiar and distinctive way. It is told from the main character's point of view, but there are two different realities. Meaning that each chapter alternates between the two. It might sound a little bit confusing-or at least it did to me before reading it- but it is easier to read and get used to than you think. To be honest, I think that the writing style is a great part of what made this book such a compelling read. I don't know about you guys, but I'm the type of person that tends to over think every situation and decision. And I always wonder 'what if" too much and in what other ways things could turn out. So the idea of this book sounded extremely appealing to say the least. In a nutshell, this is like reading to different stories in one book. And it was awesome and I loved this writing technique.

Right off the bat, you can sense a feeling of suspense in the book. There's a mix of very complicated and serious things going on and we get very little and vague explanation as to why they are happening at first. I liked that about the book because it kept me wanting to find out more. What I didn't like was the way in which the main character, Hadley, handled most of the situation. As a matter of fact, I didn't really like her at all. It's not like she was the worst main character out there, not at all. I just found her to be a tad naive at times. Her lack of judgement really radiated a vibe of immaturity. To the point where I found myself saying "DO SOMETHING, WOMAN!". She wasn't the only one, though. Which leads me to believe that these character's flaws came hand-in-hand. I'm reffering to Hadley's boyfriend, Ben. He's the a-hole of the story. And I get that, of course, he had to be unlikable, I just think that he could have been a better villain, if that makes any sense. He, like Hadley, seemed very immature. Although, a bit more obnoxious than Hadley. I mean, the guy posted a pornographic picture of Hadley and then brushed it off like it was nothing! And I think Hadley didn't stand up for herself as well as she should have. Perhaps what I'm saying is that this aspect of the book could have used a little more attention. Also, these two characters had the potential of being stronger, for different reasons of course.

Here's the good news: there was some character development. So that kind of makes up for everything. Which brings me to say that the second half of the book was definitely better. I think the story felt more consistent throughout that second half and altogether more intriguing.

On another note, the rest of the character's where amazing. Especially Hadley's best friends. I really liked them. They brought some funny elements to the story and they were always there for her. Truly amiable characters overall. And Josh, OMG Josh. I couldn't help but love him. He was sweet and dark and swoon-worthy.

As for the author's writing, I think it was truly great! Maybe even breath-taking at times. I really liked how the story shows how every decision, no matte how irrelevant it seems, can have such a big toll on your life.

Overall, the problems I had with the book were minor enough that they didn't affect my enjoyment of the book in a significant way. I think that if the synopsis really catches your attention, give this book a try.

I was pretty excited about this book. I loved the premise and was hoping for some excellent mindfuckery.

Hadley wasn't the best character. She's impulsive {which isn't bad}, but she comes across as shallow and really self-centered. I didn't care for her BFFs or boyfriend either. The only seemingly redeeming character was Josh.

Of course there's a girl's death/maybe murder and a huge secret revolving around that event. My main problem was how it was revealed. It wasn't until about 40% in that we started getting some sort of idea of what was going on. And once it was implied that someone was drugging girls and taking naked photos and/or raping them, I was done.

It had a lot of potential, but ultimately it moved too slowly for me and involved some plot points that I didn't care to read about.

I loved how intricate the plot was, and the gradual revelation of all the secrets (and there are lots). The odometer reading at the beginning of each chapter was a great way to distinguish timelines.

Favorite line: "My feelings were nothing more than ripples from the past." (p. 135)

I also liked that the action took place in a 24-hour period. It kept thing tense and moving fast. And all the minor characters had a role to play.

Satisfying and unexpected ending-- I liked not knowing exactly how it would end. And the cover is great! Perfect summer reading.

Hadley was an okay character, and I understood why she was so determined to get the revealing pictures of her off the internet. I did think she went about it the wrong way at times though.

This wasn't an awful read, but it didn't hold my attention well. The story felt quite jumpy, so I found it hard to concentrate on at points.

Overall, An okay read.

Spulciando tra i nuovi arrivi ci è caduto l’occhio su una una cover non appariscente ma che con la sua semplicità cattura. Nonostante non abbia fantasmagorici manzi in primo piano, la copertina con il suo titolo evocativo ci ha incuriosite tanto da spingerci a leggere, la trama e a restarne catturate e super curiose di leggerlo!
E così ci siamo tuffate a leggerlo la storia fin quasi dal principio corre su due binari, due svincoli, due possibilità che può percorrere la nostra protagonista Hadley. Nonostante la protagonista indiscussa sia lei gli attori sono molteplici le sue due migliori amiche Mia e Brooklyn, il suo ex Josh, il suo fidanzato Ben e un amica che nonostante non ci sia più risulta comunque una delle componenti della storia.
“Annuì con una strana sensazione di déjà-vu. Per un attimo, tutto mi sembrò rassicurante e familiare e il resto sparì: il mio passato con Josj, ben e le sue minacce, la morte di Penny…Ma il momento passò e tornai alla realtà. Niente di quello dhe riguardava Josh sarebbe mai potuto essere confortante. “
Un milione di volte buonanotte è sicuramente un libro sull’amicizia, quell’amicizia che rimane immutata, anzi si rafforza nei momenti di difficoltà. La perdita di un’amica, la morte, i pericoli che quella notte non fanno altro che spuntar fuori da ogni dove rendono il legame tra Mia, Brooklyn e Hadley sempre più vera e solida. Una spalla su cui piangere e una lavata di capo, questo ci si aspetta da un’amica, e questo nel romanzo di certo non manca. Penny completava il gruppo ha segnato tutti inesorabilmente e ha portato la protagonista e le sue amiche proprio sulla torre quella notte dando inizio a una sequenza di eventi. In sostanza, un trio che sembra non perdere mai il coraggio di affidarsi l’una all’altra anche quando la situazione diventa disperata e decisioni importanti devono essere prese.
“C’era qualcosa che mi aveva colpita nel suo sguardo e nel modo in cui aveva chiesto perdono a Tyler. E poi i sentivo vorticare dentro tutta una serie di sensazioni, perché i trovavo a questa festa esattamente un anno dopo la mia ultima sera con Penny. E, ovviamente c’era il ricordo di quella bugia, vecchia di dodici mesi a impossibile da dimenticare.”
Ma cominciamo dall’inizio, cosa scatena tutto? Qual è la famosa farfalla che mette in moto l'uragano vi chiederete voi. Ebbene tutto inizia con un auto presa in prestito forzatamente questo è l'innesco che porta il fidanzato a fare una cosa immonda come esporre il corpo della sua fidanzata su un noto social e da qui si dividono le storie. Destra o sinistra? Restare o allontanarsi? Ritornare alla festa e affrontare la situazione subito o meglio andare lontano per prepararsi alla battaglia? Entrambe decisioni legittime, che vedremo applicate in uno sliding doors atipico. A cosa porteranno le due diverse decisioni? Questa non è propriamente una storia d'amore ma piuttosto un grido d'aiuto e un dito puntato su un argomento così forte e distruttore come il Cyber bullismo, o comunque il bullismo in sé che crea danni immensi allo spirito, che dilania, fa sentire la vittima immonda, sbagliata, inadeguata e spesso immeritevole di vivere. Con un taglio suspense e un po’ di paranormal si svela a noi un intricatissima ragnatela che si rivela a colpi di scena. È un romanzo che nonostante la trama lievemente fuorviante e una difficoltà iniziale dovuta al doppio binario ci ha conquistato pagina dopo pagina tenendomi avvinta al libro fino all'ultimo, ma, eh già, purtroppo c'è un ma non siamo riuscite a comprendere pienamente il messaggio finale dell'autrice che ci ha un po’ rovinato l'insieme della lettura lasciandoci perplesse e disorientate.
In conclusione, non possiamo far altro che consigliarvi di leggere questa storia, pronte a lasciarvi trascinare pagina dopo pagina, decisione dopo decisione, senza “E se..” da dover temere.

Salve a tutti.
La lettura di cui vi parlerò oggi ha un tempo un po' alla "Sliding doors", che ci terrà in un continuo stato di curiosità.
Si tratta di "Un milione di volte buonanotte" di Kristina McBride, edito Newton Compton editore, che ringrazio per l'invio del file in anteprima.

È una notte particolare per Hadley, che durante una festa tra liceali decide di prendere in prestito la macchina del suo ragazzo, Ben, per andare con le sue amiche, Mia e Brooklyn, alla Torre degli Spettri, luogo in cui proprio un anno prima è morta la sua più cara amica Penny, investita accidentalmente da Josh, ex ragazzo di Hadley.
Quando arrivano alla Torre per rendere omaggio a Penny, Hadley riceva la telefonata di Ben, che arrabbiato le intima di portare la sua auto indietro e per punirla mette una foto di lei, mezza nuda, su Facebook. Hadley, arrabbiata e intristita per questa mossa poco cavalleresca di Ben, sale sulla Torre per riflettere e lì trova Josh, con cui non parla da quasi un anno ormai, perché lui, dopo l'incidente, ha deciso di allontanarla.
Hadley decide di tornare indietro alla festa per affrontare Ben e, per smacco, convince Josh ad andare con lei.
I quattro salgono in macchina e, arrivati al bivio che porta in autostrada, o verso la loro cittadina e quindi alla festa, cominciano due storie diverse.
In una leggeremo che cosa succederà a Josh, Hadley, Mia e Brooklyn, se decidono di andare fuori città e fare infuriare ancora di più Ben per quello che ha fatto alla sua ragazza, e nell'altra leggeremo cosa accadrà loro se decideranno di tornare alla festa.
In entrambi i casi, nulla è come sembra all'inizio, molti segreti sono rimasti per molto tempo nascosti e tutti portano alla morte di Penny.

Il titolo e la trama di questo romanzo non lasciano trapelare nulla di quello che accade veramente in questa storia.
La trama doppia mantiene il lettore in uno stato di curiosità continua e, grazie alla scrittura fluida e senza fronzoli, la lettura risulta veloce e scorrevole.
Una volta capito il meccanismo di narrazione, che salta da una parte all'altra a capitoli alterni, non si riscontra nemmeno la difficoltà di capire se ci troviamo a leggere della fuga in autostrada o del ritorno alla festa.
La storia è molto più complessa di quello che sembra e tratta argomenti importanti e delicati.
Hadley è una ragazza coraggiosa e, attraverso le sue scelte, che definisce sbagliate, arriva a fare giustizia per sé e per tutti gli altri coinvolti nella storia.
Molta tenerezza provoca il personaggio di Josh, che si trova emarginato e reietto dalla comunità per aver investito Penny. Nonostante lui sappia qualcosa che potrebbe migliorare la sua situazione, mantiene il segreto per non continuare a ferire persone che hanno già troppo sofferto.
Forte e senza vacillamenti è l'amicizia che lega Hadley, Mia e Brooklyn, che non esiteranno a coprirsi le spalle anche in situazioni di estrema pericolosità.
Ben è il personaggio che mi ha lasciato combattuta e non posso dirvi perché, dovrete leggere il romanzo.
Vi consiglio questa lettura, sebbene l'unica pecca che io abbia trovato risiede nei dialoghi, a volte poco incisivi, il resto è altamente godibile e pieno di sorprese.

I was provided an ARC of A Million Times Goodnight in exchange for an honest review. I had the privilege, like I’ve said before, of taking a writing class from Kristina McBride, and it was such an amazing experience. Let’s get this review started!

A Million Times Goodnight starts with three best friends—Hadley, Brooklyn, and Mia—visiting a spot where their late best friend, Penny Rawlins, loved to go: The Witches’ Tower.

“’That’s exactly why we’re out here.’ Strands of hair whipped my face. ‘To remember her as she was.’ ‘Loud. Wild. And totally free.’”

I’m kind of sad that Penny wasn’t alive during this novel because I definitely think she would’ve approved of all of the drama that was happening. She seemed like she would’ve lived for it.

Anyway, what gets the ball rolling is that to get to The Witches’ Tower, Hadley, our protagonist, stole her boyfriend’s car. And because she stole her boyfriend’s car, he leaked nude pictures of her online. The thing is, she didn’t steal it out of malicious intent… she did it because she wanted to pay homage to her best friend on the anniversary of her death. And if your boyfriend doesn’t understand that, DUMP HIS ASS! Of course, things are never actually as they seem…

I loved Hadley. Her character is so level-headed and badass. I mean, jeez, she stole her boyfriend’s car! I can only dream of doing something that inspiring. I absolutely loved her voice, and even when she was making reckless decisions, she normally did them to save other people before she would save herself. Her selflessness, but also her awareness that she deserved better than her scumbag boyfriend, was truly inspiring.

“I knew it was over then. Not just the discussion. Us. All the history had sizzled away any thread of hope that we might actually be finding our way back to each other.”

Everyone knows I’m a sucker for romance, and trust me, I was a sucker for Hadley’s old friend and flame, Josh. He was the quiet, broody type and he just made me melt. Because even though things with him and Hadley were rocky before, he still cared about her. And those kinds of stories just… they wreck me.

“When he pulled back, he tipped his forehead against mine. Looked me right in the eyes. ‘A million times yes.’”

But, in essence, that’s what A Million Times Goodnight is about. It’s a novel that proves to us that everything happens for a reason, no matter what choices you make—that some people are meant to be in our lives, some actions are meant to be taken, and that love will always find us. And that's exactly why this novel is so incredible. The plot is extremely uplifting and touches on so many important issues.

Kristina McBride has crafted an excellent novel that will leave you breathless and utterly in love. Pick it up when it’s released on July 5!!!

I wanted to read A Million Times Goodnight because I love the concept of parallel universe or alternate stories based on the effects of one choice versus another. I loved Pivot Point as well, so the comparison there also helped.

Hadley, our main character, starts out the story with two of her friends, they've borrowed her boyfriend's car to go to a place where a girl they were friends with died a year ago. And I use the term borrowed lightly, because as we find out he is not aware that she's taken it, and they are also not on the best terms. Not that that gives him any right for the picture of her half nude and posting on facebook. I get that teens do ridiculous things without thinking, but it was hard for me to accept that he made such an extreme choice.

Her choices: take the car back and in doing so bring a boy )that has a history that is hinted at with Hadley but we obviously don't know the whole story) with her to make him jealous or going on a road trip with said stolen/borrowed car. Now, of course neither of these are wonderful choices, but they are the two that the story focuses on and the two different paths that are played out.

The story line with the pictures went much deeper than I thought and it exposed Ben as even more of a jerk than you would think at first. There was also a lot to untangle with the history and current tension between her and Josh. A Million Times Goodnight is well paced, and the mysteries kept me reading.

I liked the friendship story line with her and Mia and Brooklyn. Also you could tell that she used to be good friends with the girl who died penny. And for even more more suspense, everyone blames Josh and I was wrapped up in the reason why and why Hadley blamed herself.

I had to take off half a star though because of the ending. It felt a little rushed to me. It did answer the questions that I had, and also brought justice to those needing it. And I also did like the way that the two parallel "universes" were brought together, making it feel more like a contemporary than sci-fi. There was so much build up though that it just felt like the ending pieces needed more fleshing out to me.

Bottom Line: Good exploration of two possible what ifs.

I, however, got bored about 25% through the story.
I didn't like any of the characters.
At times I got confused.
And this frustrates me as I normally love parallel lives books like Pivot Point.
Unfortunately this book wasn't for me, but it may be for you.

Oh, scusate. La febbre del Festival mi ha contagiata.
Ma torniamo a quello per cui siamo qui.

Premetto che ho letto molti pareri contrastanti su questo romanzo. C'è chi lo ha amato, chi lo ha odiato, chi non ne è stato pienamente convinto. Beh, per me è un sì, MA.
Ma arriviamoci per gradi.
Se vi è piaciuto il film Sliding Doors allora è un libro per voi. Mi è sempre piaciuto questo tema di “cosa sarebbe potuto accadere se”.

Siamo in una sperduta cittadina dell'Ohio e Hadley e le sue amiche hanno preso in prestito la macchina di Ben (senza che lui lo sappia ovviamente), il ragazzo della nostra protagonista, per recarsi nel bosco. Devono rendere omaggio a Penny, la loro migliore amica che è morta un anno prima, investita da una macchina.
Qui però Hadley scopre che il suo ragazzo ha postato su Facebook una foto di lei senza vestiti, una foto di cui lei non si ricorda nulla. Ora ha due possibili opzioni: tornare alla festa e affrontare Ben o prendere la sua auto e guidare il più lontano possibile da lui, accompagnata da Josh, il suo ex ragazzo.
E qui la McBride, attraverso l'alternarsi dei capitoli, ci fa vedere cosa sarebbe accaduto in entrambe le scelte, un rapporto causa-effetto molto interessante, che ho apprezzato molto.
Come ho apprezzato che abbia affrontato il tema delle foto hard, quello della droga, dello stupro, della guida con il telefono in mano. Ha analizzato bene queste situazioni e mostrando anche cosa comportassero dopo.

Quello che mi ha fatto storcere un po' il naso è stata, in primis, la caratterizzazione dei personaggi. Hadley mi è piaciuta tantissimo, un carattere forte dall'inizio alla fine, una ragazza che non si lascia mettere i piedi in testa da nessuno e che non vuole essere considerata una vittima.
Anche il personaggio di Josh è interessante, ma lo scopriamo lentamente, in ogni capitolo c'è un tassello del puzzle che torna al suo posto.
Sono gli altri personaggi, le amiche di Hadley, il fratello di Penny, che rimangono un po' come sagome sullo sfondo. Non sono caratterizzati bene come è invece la stessa Penny, che, anche se è morta ormai da un anno, sembra essere sempre presente, attraverso le parole e i pensieri delle ragazze.

Un altro elemento un po' negativo è la velocità con cui è stato affrontato il finale. Troppo veloce, appunto. Avrei preferito qualche approfondimento in più.
Ma ora parliamo degli ultimi capitoli. Anche qui, ho letto interpretazioni diverse. Senza fare spoiler, per come la vedo io, in entrambi i finali era necessario quell'esito, in modo che i due mondi paralleli si potessero riunire. O almeno, è così che ho inteso rileggendo il battibecco finale tra Josh e Hadley. Infatti entrambi ricordano cose diverse.

Comunque, è un romanzo scorrevole da leggere e interessante, con un paio di colpi di scena ben piazzati, quindi ve lo consiglio.
La McBride si colloca nella zona gialla!
Ehm, scusate, non siamo a Sanremo. Non mi rimane che augurarvi una buona lettura.

Hadley borrows her boyfriend's car on the night of the one year anniversary of her best friend's death. He then posts a naked picture of her on Facebook, and when Hadley runs up into the tower to think, she runs into her ex-boyfriend Josh.

She then invites him to go to the party with her and as they are leaving an accident almost occurs and the path diverges. In one path Hadley, Brooklyn, Josh and Mia all head to Cincinnati to plan the ultimate revenge on Ben for posting that picture, in the other they all go to the party.

So in different paths, the same things unfold in a different timeframe. Hadley finds that her boyfriend is upset about more than the car, and then secrets start coming to light.

So I know I was vague but spoilers, come on now you know me by now. What I will say is I loved this, I admit I was intrigued when I saw that it was compared to Sliding Doors, which I love. It is the only movie I love with what's her name in it. I wasn't sure that I would love this, and I admit when it goes to different paths you have to be paying attention it took me two chapters to catch on. So just so you know it starts off all on one timeline when it seems like they are going to hit a car it then switches between paths.

I loved the friendships in this book, loved them! Hadley was okay she grew on me as the book went on. I wasn't sure about Josh he was frustrating in both paths, and Ben was just well I can't say too much about him, but yeah..

I couldn't stop reading this, I had to see how it would end I was on the edge of my seat until the very end.

I’ve started this book three times, the first two times I gave up around 10-15% and this time I made it all the way to 48% before I just couldnt take it anymore.

This book was so hard to start because I didn’t really like any of the characters. Hadley made me really mad at times, she is very self-centred and shallow. Her and her friends do a lot of stupid things and make really dumb decisions that I could just not understand.

I thought the way the author wrote the book was very creative, the parallel story with alternating chapters was interesting, although it could get a bit confusing at times.

I really wish I could have enjoyed the book more, this one just wasn’t for me

I was expecting something dark and edgy and this book did not deliver.

Basically, Hadley borrows her boyfriend's car without telling him so he posts a naked picture of her on Facebook. Then Ben, the asshole boyfriend, calls her up and announces that he'll take down the picture if she returns his car. At this point, the storyline diverges because Hadley (the main character) has two choices: return the car or steal it and go for a joy-ride. What's a girl to do right? Well apparently we get to find out the pros and cons of each of these options because both of these possibilities are explored in alternating chapters. (Don't bother asking me why this is the case because I have absolutely no clue..especially as it doesn't really go anywhere!)

Then there's the fact that the main character seriously pissed me off. I just did not get the skewed logic behind half of her decisions...and while she was all determined to do something, nothing actually happens. (I mean I don't even understand why she thinks committing a crime is the best way to take revenge..and her naked photo is still floating around the internet! It's like Hadley thinks avoiding her problems will make them go away.) I kept anticipating drama but got nothing. To be honest, her friends didn't really interest me that much either.

So somewhere along the way, I decided not to finish this book. It wasn't for me but if you're interested, you should still give it a go!

This book was definitely different due to the fact there were two scenarios going on. In one scenario, Hadley "borrows" her boyfriend's BMW. He puts up a semi nude picture of her on FB and demands the car back. She decides to really show him and goes on a road trip. In the other scenario, Hadley borrows the car and brings it back to the party they were at, only something is missing from the car.

Sometimes this got a little confusing for me because I would forget which scenario was what while I was reading it. But I think that had to do with the fact the chapter headings were mixed up since it was unedited.

However, this one really got the juices going for me and I sped right through it. Car chase, bike chase, running chase, just all kinds of chases going on in this book and it will keep your heart pounding! While I believe this is a YA ( and a good one at that), I believe adults will get into it as well. While it is about teenagers, there's none of that usual teeny bopper stuff going on. This is a thriller. I highly recommend it.

Have you seen the movie Sliding Doors? Did you like it? If so you will enjoy A Million Times Goodnight by Kristina McBride. Hadley and her boyfriend Ben are the quintessential cute high school couple. Until Hadley borrows Ben's car and he posts nude shots of her online. There is where our tale really opens up. Hadley can return the car and confront Ben or she can keep going and take an epic road trip. Well, she does both. Told in alternating chapters, each version of the story is fleshed out.

Kristina McBride was able to mesh two very different stories into one engrossing tale. The alternation brought the tension to both storylines as you had to wait for the payoff. It did take a few chapters for me to be able to follow each story and be able to separate them as individual entities. I also enjoyed that the tale took place over just one night as it made the read seem to fly by. All in all I enjoyed this read once I was able to get into the flow.

Overall I enjoyed this book. I love the movie Sliding Doors and the idea of this was fun. I had an advanced copy so the final might be different, but it took me a bit to figure out which timeline was which. I don't know if the chapter headings in the final copy are clearer or more distinguished, or maybe I just didn't pay much attention early on. The story kept me hooked, and trying to figure out which timeline was the real one. In the end, that wasn't really how it worked, but I still enjoyed both of them. There were some ridiculous parts, and the resolution wasn't great, but it was an interesting read. I liked the characters, mostly. It was fun watching Josh and Hadley find their way back to each other.

Un milione di volte buonanotte è la storia di Hadley, una liceale dalla vita perfetta, con amiche stupende al suo fianco che farebbero di tutto per lei, un fidanzato Josh che ama con tutto il cuore, e una vita piena di feste e divertimento. Ma non fatevi ingannare, perchè questo non è il solito young adult! Infatti tutto cambia quando una notte la sua migliore amica Penny muore in circostanze non del tutto chiare, in un incidente nel quale è coinvolto Josh e l’intero mondo di Hadley inizia a crollare: mollata e pervasa dal senso di colpa per non essere stata affianco all’amica quella fatidica sera, la ragazza riesce solo dopo diversi mesi a colmare il vuoto che sentiva dentro e a ritrovare un po’ di felicità tra le braccia di Ben, il ragazzo bello e popolare, il sogno di ogni ragazza della scuola.

Quello che però Hadley non si sarebbe mai aspettata è che dietro il bel faccino di Ben si cela un ragazzo viziato e vendicativo, abituato ad avere ogni persona ai suoi comandi e ad ottenere sempre tutto ciò che vuole. Così dopo che la ragazza prende una sera la sua preziosa macchina senza permesso, Ben decide di postare per ripicca su Facebook una foto di lei nuda, foto che la ragazza nemmeno si ricorda di essersi fatta scattare. A questo punto ad Hadley si prospettano due alternative: cedere al ricatto, riportando la macchina a Ben con la coda fra le gambe per convincerlo a togliere la foto, oppure vendicarsi, decidendo di partire con l’ex fidanzato per un viaggio on the road senza meta.

«Non credo ci siano risposte giuste a questo punto. Ma di una cosa sono certa: Josh deve venire con noi».
Lui si schiarii la gola. «Io non devo fare nulla».
«Ho bisogno di te», dissi decisa. «Me lo devi».
«Hadley», continuò Brooklyn, «pensaci per un attimo e capirai. È… una pazzia».
Alzai le spalle. «Forse. Ma è il tipo di pazzia perfetto». Guardai il ragazzo negli occhi. «Ci stai?».

Ed è qui che comincia Un milione di volte buonanotte, con una scelta da prendere e la possibilità per il lettore di scoprire quale delle due alternative avrebbe portato, a conti fatti, maggior guadagno alla protagonista. I capitoli si alternano quindi tra una e l’altra scelta, portando alla luce sempre maggiori dettagli di un passato oscuro e misterioso che non ci si immaginerebbe mai all’inizio del romanzo. E dalla vendetta tra due liceali, il tutto si trasforma in una corsa per aver salva la pelle, in un clima da thriller, dove saltano fuori segreti pericolosi sul quale sarebbe stato meglio non indagare.

“Avrei voluto dirle che mi dispiaceva. Che mi ero sbagliata su ogni singola scelta che avevo fatto in quella notte folle.
Avrei voluto dire un milione di cose in quel momento.
Ma potevo solo rimanere ferma lì.
In silenzio.
In attesa.”

Ma da questa struttura così particolare di romanzo, abbiamo anche la possibilità di conoscere meglio i caratteri dei protagonisti, nelle scelte che intraprendono in entrambi gli scenari. Troviamo quindi Hadley, che, qualunque sia la sua scelta, resta forte e combattiva, non si fa fermare da niente e da nessuno una volta individuato il suo obiettivo. Ha deciso di fargliela pagare a Ben per la foto, ma non sa che ha tra le mani un vaso di Pandora pronto ad esplodere, che le rifarà anche rivivere sotto una luce nuova la fatidica sera della morte di Penny.

“«Non essere sorpresa. Hai visto che macchina ha. Ben ha quello che vuole, quando vuole. Senza eccezioni».
«Tranne stanotte», disse Mia sorridendo.
«Esatto».”

E poi c’è Josh, che dal momento dell’incidente ha visto la sua vita frantumarsi in mille pezzi: ha perso gli amici, la ragazza, persino i genitori lo guardano con orrore. Ci sono mille voci che girano su di lui e sull’incidente, anche se nessuno conosce davvero la verità, e la sua reputazione è distrutta, tutti lo odiano. Il senso di colpa lo devasta, crede di meritarsi tutte le conseguenze che ne sono derivate, ma allo stesso tempo non desidera altro che poter essere perdonato, per poter tornare finalmente a respirare e a vivere una vita normale.

La storia tra i due è finita a causa dell’allontanamento di lui che non la voleva coinvolgere nel casino che era diventata la sua vita, ed è chiaro che c’è dell’irrisolto in sospeso. Il romanzo presenta infatti, anche se in maniera non preponderante, un lato romance molto dolce e tutto da scoprire. L’unica cosa che non mi ha convinta appieno è stata come nello scenario in cui i due sono meno insieme, il loro legame sia più forte ed immediato, rispetto a quello in cui sono più vicini per tutto il tempo; ma resta comunque una parte secondaria e l’attenzione non riuscirà per questo ad essere sviata dalla trama di segreti e di rivelazioni bomba del romanzo.

La struttura a Sliding Doors trovo sia stata molto ben sfruttata, andando a trasformare una storia carina e con del potenziale in un romanzo assolutamente godibile ed originale. Ho apprezzato come le rivelazioni avvengano parallelamente in situazioni e tempistiche differenti, ma come tutto alla fine converga e si sovrapponga in un finale super adrenalinico ed emozionante, dove la tensione sale e non si riesce a capire fino alla fine se una delle due strade (e quale delle due) riuscirà ad avere l’atteso lieto fine.

La conclusione è il vero punto che mi ha lasciato un po’ perplessa. Quasi fantascientifica rispetto all’andamento generale del romanzo, non mi è chiaro al 100% l’andamento dei fatti, anche se in realtà credo sia proprio l’intento dell’autrice, il poter lasciare ancora qualche domanda irrisolta nel lettore, in un romanzo caratterizzato da un senso di mistero così forte.

Un milione di volte buonanotte si dimostra quindi essere un’interessantissima scoperta: scorrevole e ben impostato, ricco di segreti e di rivelazioni inaspettate, in un clima ad alta tensione con un pizzico di romanticismo adolescenziale e un’amara riflessione sul potere dei social al giorno d’oggi, all’interno di una struttura così originale da rendere il romanzo assolutamente da leggere e da scoprire!

Può uno scherzo innocente, stravolgere delle vite, e trasformarsi in una notte da incubo? Care dame, risponderò a questa domanda parlandovi di Un milione di volte buonanotte di Kristina McBride.

Per tenere in vita il ricordo di una delle sue più care amiche, Hadley prende in "prestito" l'auto del suo ragazzo Ben, senza avvisarlo, e invece di andare alla festa di fine anno del college, insieme ad altre due amiche, si reca sul luogo dell'incidente che un anno prima stroncò  la vita della giovane Penny.

"Mi sembrò bello - incredibilmente bello- essere viva, alla guida di quell'auto con le mie migliori amiche. Avvolta dalla musica, dall'aria fresca e dalla luce della luna, era uno di quei momenti che non avrei mai dimenticato."

Per sua sfortuna Ben non prende molto bene la cosa, e per vendicarsi decide di mettere in rete una foto compromettente della fidanzata, taggando i compagni di scuola.

"Dopo pochi secondi, una foto apparve sullo schermo. Era l'immagine di un adolescente nuda. Mi sembrava stranamente familiare, ma non sapevo perché. Poi vidi il mio nome e il panico mi invase il petto, spandendosi in onde che facevano eco al battito agitato del mio cuore.
Non ero io, non era possibile, non poteva essere vero."

Ancora sotto shock dopo aver visto la foto, e non riuscendo a ricordare in che momento possa essere stata scattata, Hadley chiama il fidanzato per fargli eliminare il post.

"Hai rubato la mia macchina, Hadley. Pensavi  che non mi sarei vendicato?
- L'ho presa in prestito, per dimostrare qualcosa. Non è che...
- Che coincidenza, anche io ho caricato la foto per dimostrare qualcosa. Ha funzionato?
- Non puoi paragonare le due cose, Ben. Rimuovi l'immagine. Ora.
- Potrei farlo. Ma prima rivoglio la mia auto."

A questo punto Hadley ha due scelte. Tornare alla festa e riportare la macchina a Ben, facendogli togliere la foto da Facebook. Oppure, vendicarsi a sua volta portando la macchina il più lontano possibile dal suo legittimo proprietario. Nel secondo caso però, si troverebbe a dividere il viaggio con l'ex fidanzato, che si è offerto di aiutarla avendo a sua volta un conto da regolare con Ben. Ma affrontare il viaggio con Josh voleva anche dire rivivere gli errori del passato, comprese le dolorose cause della loro rottura.

"Continuava a guardarmi, e i suoi occhi erano una finestra sul passato, da cui emergevano ricordi che pensavo sepolti per sempre. Per esempio il modo in cui era solito guardarmi, con un sorriso pigro, come se ignorasse che il nostro tempo sarebbe finito da un momento all'altro; oppure la maniera in cui guidava, una mano sul volante e l'altra abbandonata sul mio ginocchio; o ancora come mi abbracciava e mi faceva volteggiare quanto arrivavamo a metà della nostra corsa preferita, in cima alla torre."

Hadley si ritrova a un bivio, può scegliere solo una delle due strade...o no? Mi fermo qua per non spoilerare.

Ammetto che ho fatto fatica a entrare nell'ottica dell'autrice nei primi capitoli, sono tornata indietro a rileggere perché non  riuscivo a capire dove mi ero persa o se avevano sbagliato impaginazione. Quando ho capito il senso di quello che stavo leggendo, sono rimasta piacevolmente colpita. Come dicevo all'inizio, tutto si svolge in una notte. Una lunga notte che cambia molte vite e illumina eventi in ombra. La lettura è scorrevole, ricca di suspence, colpi di scena e un pizzico di romanticismo. L'autrice affronta i problemi che purtroppo sono sempre più diffusi tra i giovani. Il bullismo mediatico, una volta guardavi in faccia le persone che bullizzavi, adesso basta una tastiera e non hai più quel "fastidio" mentre getti fango addosso alle persone. I ragazzi ormai vivono in un mondo virtuale, dove le persone non sembrano neanche reali, finché non succedono le tragedie che ormai sono sempre più frequenti. Ragazzi che pur di ottenere like e consensi non si fermano davanti a niente e nessuno, usando qualsiasi metodo per ottenerli.  La McBride è stata molto brava ad affrontare queste problematiche, senza essere pesante, ma tenendo viva l'attenzione in modo semplice. Sulla storia di Hadley  si dovrebbe riflettere, perché niente è come appare, tanto meno le persone che crediamo di conoscere bene. Oggi ci si fa selfie, e foto anche hot, non pensando che basta un click e tutto diventa pubblico. Molto d'effetto gli ultimi capitoli, una sincronia perfetta tra i vari periodi che si incrociano fino a creare un finale a sorpresa. Un romanzo in cui l'amicizia fa da collante all'intera storia. Il desiderio di mantenere vivo il ricordo di una cara amica, che porta la protagonista insieme alle amiche a ribellarsi alle ingiustizie e farsi paladine di chi non si può difendere, anche se questo può costare caro. Ma anche il desiderio di ricostruire un rapporto che si era rotto per cause di forza maggiore, perché la speranza non deve mai morire.
Lo consiglio, per riflettere.

Quante volte durante la lettura di un libro vi siete chiesti: ma se i protagonisti avessero fatto un’altra scelta o avessero detto un’altra frase nel momento cruciale, come si sarebbero svolti i fatti? La storia sarebbe cambiata? Ma soprattutto, il finale sarebbe stato lo stesso comunque?
Personalmente, in più di una lettura mi sono posta queste domande e lo avrei fatto sicuramente anche stavolta, se l’autrice non avesse provveduto, creando questo adrenalinico Sliding Doors.
Già dai primissimi capitoli si viene catapultati in un racconto accattivante e ricco di temi seri e terribilmente attuali, che interessano qualunque fascia d’età , nonostante i protagonisti siano degli adolescenti.
Hadley e le sue inseparabili amiche, Brooklyn e Mia, non volevano fare niente di male quella sera; anzi, con l’intento di ricordare tutte insieme l’anniversario della prematura scomparsa di Penny, hanno raggiunto il luogo in cui ha perso la vita un anno prima, reclamando il bisogno di dedicarle un pensiero speciale. Sarebbero bastate poche decine di minuti e Ben, il ragazzo di Hadley, non si sarebbe accorto della temporanea scomparsa della sua auto. Purtroppo, peró, il giovane lo ha scoperto e con una reazione eccessiva decide di vendicarsi della ragazza: posta su Facebook una sua foto senza veli, scattata durante un momento di intimità, e la ricatta, intimandole di riportare subito la macchina indietro, altrimenti non cancellerà la foto.
La minaccia, accompagnata alla vergogna del momento, scatenano in Hadley una rabbia immane e una delusione profonda, che la portano a volersi vendicare all’istante. Ma come? E soprattutto, perché una tale reazione per aver preso in prestito una macchina per un’ora?
Gli innumerevoli messaggi e le continue chiamate di Ben, per riaverla al più presto, insospettiscono Hadley e le ragazze, e l’astio cresce di minuto in minuto, finché lei non prende una decisione coraggiosa: non si arrenderà per prima e Ben non riavrà la sua auto, finché quella foto non sarà definitivamente cancellata dal WEB.
Ed è proprio qui che la nostra storia giunge a un bivio, in cui Hadley potrà scegliere se riportare la macchina a Ben e convincerlo a cancellare quella foto o se negargli il mezzo finché lui non si arrenderà. Ma sarà veramente obbligata a scegliere? E se potesse vivere entrambe le opzioni come due avventure parallele? Ma soprattutto che ruolo avrà Josh, il suo ex ragazzo, coinvolto ahimè nella morte di Penny e odiato da tutti?
Non posso svelarvi tutto, ma vi assicuro che seguire le loro avventure sarà come salire sulle montagne russe.
Questa lettura mi ha piacevolmente colpita e, man mano che mi addentravo nei suoi meandri, affascinata e rapita. L’adrenalina la fa da padrona, questo è poco ma sicuro!
Le tematiche trattate variano dal bullismo mediatico, alla dipendenza da internet, droghe, sesso, perdita della concezione della realtà fisica perché immersi in un mondo virtuale fino al punto di non ritorno; ma troviamo anche l’amicizia, la voglia di rivalsa, di ribellarsi contro le ingiustizie, il bisogno di tenere vivo il ricordo di un’amica speciale, anche se ormai scomparsa, e la voglia di ricostruire un sentimento bello e profondo, andato perso per cause di forza maggiore, ma non abbastanza potenti per cancellarlo del tutto.
L’autrice è riuscita a regalarci due storie in una, riuscendo perfettamente nell’intento di non far perdere il lettore in inutili congetture, permettendo di gustare a pieno una narrazione ricca di colpi di scena, suspance e un pizzico di romanticismo, senza mai slittare dal filo conduttore.
Una scrittura fluida e gradevolissima rendono la lettura appassionante ed eccitante.
Un finale col “BOTTO” e assolutamente inaspettato vi porterà a volerne di più, una volta chiusa l’ultima pagina.
Se lo consiglio? Assolutamente sì!

Un milione di volte buonanotte sembrerebbe, a una prima scorsa, un romanzo come tanti altri: pene d’amore, amicizia, feste con troppo alcol, i problemi dovuti all’adolescenza e ai primi ostacoli che la vita del liceo presenta. La sua struttura narrativa e un alone di ansia e di mistero, però, avvolgono il lettore già dalle prime pagine e poco per volta, almeno così è successo a me, si viene trasportati in questa storia, ma procediamo per gradi.

Hadley ha una vita fantastica, al limite del perfetto. È bella, benestante, ha delle amiche che la supportano e la seguono in tutto, con le quali condivide segreti e gran parte delle sue attività scolastiche e private e ha un ragazzo, insomma tutto sembra andare a gonfie vele fino a quando, una notte del tutto anonima, un evento sconvolgerà la sua vita. La perdita della sua migliore amica Penny, in circostanze del tutto sconosciute, arriva come una doccia gelata e, da quel giorno, per Hadley niente sarà più come prima. Viene lasciata dal suo ragazzo e mattone dopo mattone, tutto il suo mondo patinato, comincia a crollare. Il dolore della perdita si fa ogni giorno più pesante e la nostra protagonista verrà messa davanti a delle scelte imprescindibili.

Josh è l’ex ragazzo di Hadley e anche per lui, da un giorno all’altro, la vita è destinata ad avere un tracollo. I sospetti della morte di Penny, si ammassano sulla sua testa, allontanandolo da tutti i suoi affetti: amici, ragazza, persino i sui genitori non lo guarderanno più come prima. Si ritrova da solo, a fare i conti con il volto più amaro che la vita, a volte, ci mostra.

I due si rincontrano una sera. Hadley ha appena preso senza permesso la macchina del suo attuale ragazzo, Ben, un’adolescente tanto bello quanto viziato ed egocentrico che di tutta risposta si vendica nel peggiore dei modi.

Per Hadley, il gesto di Ben è la goccia che fa traboccare il vaso, il limite che non avrebbe mai dovuto superare; decide, quindi di rendergli pan per focaccia e di farsi aiutare da Josh per attuare il suo piano malefico… o piani malefici per vendicarsi a sua volta.

Josh non è più il ragazzo brillante di un tempo, il suo sguardo è spento e triste. La complicità che i due avevano, però, non tarda a riaffiorare… bastano poche battute, pochi sguardi che in Hadley riaffiorano i bei momenti passati con lui, piccole parentesi che, anche se per un breve momento, tornano a darle respiro.

Vi è mai capitato di trovarvi di fronte a un bivio, di fare la vostra scelta e di chiedervi: come sarebbe andata se avessi seguito l’altra strada?

A me sempre. Anche quando sono convinta del percorso che intraprendo.

In questo romanzo, con la struttura a Sliding Doors avrete la possibilità di vivere entrambi i percorsi che intraprende la protagonista, ma ricordatevi sempre che esistono infinite possibilità e infiniti sentieri che il destino traccia…

Un libro strutturato in questo modo non lo avevo mai letto e devo fare i miei complimenti all’autrice per assere riuscita a gestire un plot così complesso.

Lo stile è incalzante e tiene il lettore incollato alle pagine, nonostante alcune situazioni, a parere mio siano un tantino esagerate e appena credibili, è un romanzo sicuramente diverso e che consiglio assolutamente.

L’unico aspetto che proprio non mi convince che cambierei è la cover, tanto carina quanto fuorviante. Lascia presagire un romanzo leggero e spensierato quando, in realtà in Un milione di volte buonanotte vengono trattati temi che non sono propriamente “spensierati” e “leggeri”.

A MILLION TIMES GOODNIGHT by Kristina McBride is a young adult mystery thriller novel with a magical realism twist. The story begins when 17-year-old Hadley steals her boyfriend Ben's car to run to the gas station. But when Ben finds out his car is missing, he posts a naked picture of Hadley on Facebook for everyone to see. Hadley decides to get payback on Ben, and what follows is a split narrative that plays out two possible storylines. In the first, Hadley and her friends go to the big party in town, and then spend the night trying to escape Ben and his dangerous friends. In the second, Hadley goes on a road trip in Ben's car with her ex-boyfriend Josh.

This book has so much promise, but unfortunately it is not executed well. I payed careful attention to each storyline, as it seemed inevitable that at some point the details would be confused. It isn't until about 78% of the way through the Ebook that a mistake is made, but it is a major plot hole that has a big impact on the story. From there, the storylines devolve a bit, and the small details get muddled. It's a shame because if there was just a bit more tightening on each individual plot line, this book would be much stronger.

Moreover, I found it interesting that this book deals with so many serious topics. Drugs, rape, child sexual abuse material, bullying, suicide, and gun violence all play a role (just to name a few!). I feel like too many issues are tossed into the narrative, and the author can't focus on any one issue because so much is happening. While the nonstop action gives the book a fast-paced and exciting feel, I'm concerned that the true importance of these serious topics is being tossed away for entertainment value.

In the end, I found A MILLION TIMES GOODNIGHT to have the bones of a great thriller, but it falls a bit flat for me. I do recommend it for those looking for a quick read with a unique writing style. Of course, be prepared for a YA romance paired with the token best friend group to round out the story.
