Defiant Ones: Sybil Ludington: The American Revolution's Bravest Women - Patriots, Prophets, Poets & Spies
History remembers the soldiers. It's time to remember the women who fought for liberty alongside them.
Before the American Revolution changed a nation, sixteen-year-old Sybil Ludington was already discovering that courage means answering the call, even when the road ahead is dark.
Growing up in the shadow of war, Sybil is fearless in the saddle and fiercely devoted to her family. But as tensions rise across New York, the danger comes frighteningly close to home. Her father, Colonel Henry Ludington, has become such a threat to the British that a bounty is placed on his head, forcing Sybil to confront the reality that the fight for liberty may demand more from her than she ever imagined.
Then, on a storm-soaked April night, word arrives that British forces are burning Danbury and her father's scattered militia must be called back to arms. With no rider available and no time to lose, Sybil knows what she must do.
Mounting her beloved horse, Star, she rides into the darkness, battling torrential rain, treacherous roads, dangerous strangers, and her own fears as she races from home to home sounding the alarm. With every mile, Sybil clings to her faith and discovers that bravery isn't the absence of fear. It's trusting God enough to keep riding through it.
Inspired by true events, Defiant Sybil Ludington is a captivating historical novelette about faith, courage, sacrifice, and a young woman's determination to answer the call when her family, her community, and the cause of liberty need her most.

I write Christian Historical Western Romance. Yes, that often entails the use of firearms in a threatening manner. Sometimes there are fistfights. There may even be politically incorrect but historically accurate language. But also, there is always an inspirational message and strong allusions (at least) to the gospel.
A former journalist, I am an avid researcher and endeavor to skillfully weave truth in among fictional story lines. I love exploring the American West, especially ghost towns and museums. I have walked parts of the Oregon Trail, ridden horses through the Rockies, climbed to the top of Independence Rock, and even held an outlaw's note in my hand.
I grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina on a steady diet of Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and John Wayne Westerns. My most fond childhood memory is of sitting next to my daddy, munching on popcorn, and watching Lucas McCain unload that Winchester! My daddy also taught me to shoot and, trust me, I can sew buttons on with my rifle.

I am a proud member of Western Writers of America.
My novels are all Christian Western Romance because this is the genre that lets me write about strong, pioneer women and men who struggle to find God and then live out their faith in real ways. Like good old fashioned Westerns, there is always justice, a moral message, American values, lots of high adventure, unexpected plot twists, and more than a touch of suspense. Of course, romance is always a strong element in my stories because it is such a beautiful gift from God and a perfect reflection of how he loves us: sacrificially and lavishly. My stories aren’t preachy or cheesy, but I hope they are inspirational, heart-warming, realistic, illuminating, and glorifying to God.

5 stars! This is my favorite novelette, so far, in this series! I highly recommend you read this series and listen to the Defiant Ones podcast. You'll learn so much about women who helped during the American Revolution.
This was another story I hadn't heard before of the "female Paul Revere", 16 year old Sybil Ludington. She rode 40 miles on a horse in 10 hours, in the night, during a downpour, to help defend our country to get a group of militia together in 1777.
This is so well-written and draws you in from the beginning. I liked how courageous she was and that she could shoot better than a lot of the men, and she rode a horse better than most men. What an inspiration! So brave!
Highly, highly recommend this series!!
Thank you to the author for the eARC. All opinions are my own, and I was not required to give a certain rating.

Love history, strong women and want a quick read? Get to know Sybil Ludington who at the age of 16, in the spring of 1777 rode to rally patriots because the British were burning a nearby town. It's a pleasure to learn about her and her relationship with her family and neighbors, and about what a horsewoman she was at a time when women were only allowed to ride sidesaddle. Based on a true historical person. Engrossing short read!

Another inspiring story of courage in the time of danger. Sybil is a 16 year old girl who can ride better than most men and is devoted to her father and his belief in liberty. When faced with the threat of armed men coming to kill her father, she is the only one who can sound the alarm and rally the militia. She proves she is capable and became known as the female Paul Revere. Her bravery saved her family and earned her a place in history. I am still amazed at the number of women I was unaware of and their contribution to liberty in the time of the Revolution.

I really enjoyed reading this story. I loved learning about this courageous 16-year-old girl. After hearing that the British are burning a nearby town, and no one was available to call the patriot troops to arms, she volunteered to ride through the night to alert her father’s militia. I also loved that she depended on God to give her the strength to finish her mission.

I continue to be astounded at how a story so short can be as satisfying and fulfilling as a full length novel, but this author nails it with each installment in this series! Sybil gives new meaning to the strength and courage within a woman, the sheer determination and her God defies the insurmountable!

Heather Blanton does a great job of retelling a true story from history that I never knew. The courage and dedication of our forefathers during our war of independence from England is astounding. You will love this short novelette and feel the rain and storm around you on Sybil’s legendary ride! Don’t miss it!

Love love love! Sybil literally took the reigns and mustered troops. And she was only 16!
The writing is so descriptive, I could feel the rain as I rode along with her. Definitely worth the quick read!
