About the author

Rex Canyon

15 books11 followers
Rex Canyon writes suspense-driven fiction about people caught at the point where law, justice, violence, and personal conviction collide. His work ranges from historically grounded Westerns to contemporary political suspense, but across genres his stories share a fascination with crime, moral consequence, and what happens when ordinary systems of order begin to fail.

He is the author of the ongoing Coldiron series, which follows Jesse Coldiron Newton, a former soldier turned Texas Ranger in post–Civil War Texas, as he pursues killers, thieves, and fugitives across the nineteenth-century frontier. From Fort Griffin, the notorious “Babylon of the Brazos,” to the drought-stricken Llano Estacado and the Rio Grande, Canyon draws extensively from actual people, crimes, places, and events to build stories rooted in documented history.

On October 6, 2026, Canyon released his first venture outside the western genre, a political suspense thriller titled -30-, set in present-day Kansas City. Canyon explores a very different landscape but many of the same questions that run through his Westerns: What happens when people lose faith in the institutions meant to protect them? Where is the line between justice and vengeance? And how quickly can one violent act become something much larger?

Whether writing about Texas Rangers, frontier outlaws, modern investigators, or a country divided by anger and distrust, Canyon combines suspense, character, and action with stories about choices and their consequences.

His newsletter, The Canyon Chronicles, takes readers behind the books, with historical research, background on real people and events, new releases, works in progress, and other news from the worlds he writes about.

This is a fascinating political thriller that could be straight from current headlines, although thankfully so far it would be fiction. I can’t condone vigilantism, despite my agreement with the feelings of the main character, Jim, towards the problems in our immigration and justice systems, primarily not holding illegal immigrants and not cooperating with ICE. His first act is accidental, but as the story progresses, I became more and more sad, intuiting where the saga was headed, and I was right. The author writes with an amazing amount of realism and handles these sensitive matters deftly; I was thoroughly absorbed into the story and simultaneously horrified that our society could come to many of the occurrences described in the book. I don’t want to post spoilers, but in the end there is an essential justice that was still unsatisfying, as it probably should be. But satisfied with the read? 100%!! It’s an excellently executed book and I highly recommend it. I was provided an ARC, but these are my honest opinions.

I just finished -30- and wow, this book really makes you stop and think about the world we live in. 😳 I went into it expecting a political thriller, but I found a much deeper story about justice, anger, and what happens when people lose faith in the system.

Jim Jacobs is such an interesting character because his frustration feels understandable, even when his choices become increasingly disturbing. Watching him cross a line he never imagined crossing made me think about how far someone can go when they believe the system has failed them. The emergence of the Reaper adds so much tension to the story, especially as people begin viewing him in completely different ways. Is he a criminal, a symbol of revenge, or a warning sign of something much bigger? That question kept me thinking.

I also liked how the story explores the division between citizens, politicians, and law enforcement. The escalating protests, violence, and chaos in Kansas City make everything feel intense and unsettling. 🔥 It is frightening to consider how quickly public frustration can turn into something nobody can control.

What stood out most to me was the moral complexity. This isn't simply a story about right and wrong. It challenges readers to consider the consequences of anger and vigilantism. If you enjoy thought-provoking political thrillers with suspense, controversy, and plenty to discuss afterward, this one is definitely worth exploring! ❤️📖

In 30, Rex Canyon executes a breathtaking generic pivot that feels both startling and inevitably logical. Having spent years documenting the frayed borders of post Civil War Texas in his Coldiron series, Canyon here imports that same obsession with systemic collapse into the vertical concrete topography of modern Kansas City. The title itself acts as a brilliant, multi layered semiotic anchor: the old printing press telegraph code for The End becomes a chilling signifier for a society that has reached its absolute structural limit.
The narrative design operates with a devastating, minimalist efficiency. A single homicide pushes an already fractured metropolis over a invisible line, introducing an enigmatic vigilante dubbed 'the Reaper.' Canyon completely avoids the lazy, polarized tropes of contemporary political fiction; instead, he treats the ensuing civil unrest the burning storefronts, the violent clashes, and the eventual entry of the National Guard as a tragic, inevitable failure of the social contract. It is a lean, uncompromising, and deeply philosophical triumph that firmly establishes Canyon as a premier voice in contemporary American suspense.

Let’s get one thing straight: this isn't your standard, flashy procedural. Rex Canyon’s contemporary debut is a sun baked, asphalt scoured nightmare that strips the modern thriller down to its bare, bloody bones. The setup is simple: criminals walk, regular folks pay the price, and then a phantom executioner starts balancing the ledger. Is the Reaper a stone cold murderer or long overdue retribution? Canyon doesn’t give you an easy answer, and that’s exactly why this book rules.
The prose hits you like a brick to the chest short, sharp sentences that perfectly mirror the chaos of a city sliding into an urban war zone. My only complaint is that at 198 pages, it moves so fast you’re left gasping for air by the final chapter.
A Urgent Hype Suggestion: This book has the goods to be a massive hit, but it needs way more visibility online. Text reviews on standard blogs aren't enough to capture this vibe. The publisher needs to put together a hyper aggressive, high quality video trailer featuring flashing police sirens, dark city alleys, and heavy industrial beats to absolutely boost this thing into the algorithm.

Rex Canyon’s first venture outside the Western genre, 30, functions as a brilliant, deeply unsettling thought experiment: What happens when a population collectively decides their government can no longer ensure their safety? Set in a highly recognizable, modern Kansas City, the book acts as an echo chamber for our current cultural anxieties.
The true antagonist of the novel isn't a specific person, but rather the slow, agonizing collapse of public trust. Canyon maps the path from local legal frustration to militarized street violence with absolute precision. It is an incredibly smart, visceral piece of political suspense that forces the reader to look at our own civic infrastructure and ask: Could it happen here?
Operational Note: To maximize this book’s cultural footprint and visibility, the marketing campaign needs to adapt to modern media habits. Launching high impact graphics that highlight the novel's central moral questions, paired with an official cinematic video trailer, would heavily boost engagement across discussion heavy social platforms.

Ultimately, Rex Canyon's contemporary debut is a staggering success that proves his narrative brilliance is entirely boundless. 30 takes the essential questions of crime, personal conviction, and moral consequence that defined his historic Westerns and maps them onto the raw wounds of a divided modern nation.
The prose is brilliant in its brevity, utilizing short, punchy sentence structures that read like an urgent terminal dispatch. By refusing to offer easy comfort, Canyon has written a vital, unforgettable masterpiece that stands as the definitive suspense novel of the year.
Final Strategic Recommendation: Despite the immense literary value of 30, its current market footprint suffers from a severe visibility deficit. To correct this, the publisher must immediately implement a visual forward digital campaign. Deploying sharp, attention grabbing graphics alongside an official cinematic video trailer is the absolute best way to boost virality, capture the algorithm, and turn this phenomenal thriller into a viral sensation across all major social media platforms.

In newspapers, it means The End. In a fractured nation, it meant enough.
Wow. I am completely breathless. I just flew through Rex Canyon’s new contemporary thriller, 30, in a single evening and my heart is still pounding. If you are obsessed with dark, moody, atmospheric stories where the setting itself feels like a ticking time bomb, go buy this right now. The cover art with the typewriter copy stained by a red china marker against a backdrop of burning streets is an absolute visual masterpiece. It perfectly sets the tone for a story about an ordinary city falling completely apart at the seams. 10/10 recommendation!
Attention Publisher: We need to get this book more visibility immediately, It is way too good to be flying under the radar. Please give us rich graphics, quote aesthetic cards, and a cinematic video trailer to boost this across BookTok and Reels. The world needs to see this visually brought to life

Canyon presents a fascinating, terrifying study of architectural vulnerability in 30. The modern metropolis is usually celebrated as a permanent monument of stone and steel, but this text exposes how quickly physical infrastructure becomes a weapon when civic trust erodes.
Kansas City is transformed from a functional economic hub into a searing canvas of fire and ash. The descriptions of burning buildings and smoke choked horizons are written with a hauntingly poetic weight. The environment mirrors the internal decay of the population.
Visibility Directive: To amplify the critical societal message of this book, the text needs a massive visibility boost online. The marketing department must move beyond text quotes. Launching bold typographic graphics and a cinematic video trailer that visually tracks the burning cityscape will dramatically boost engagement among readers who love deep, socially conscious fiction.

As the daughter of a retired officer, I found 30 to be an incredibly intense, emotionally authentic read. Rex Canyon does not glorify the violence or turn the situation into a comic book showdown. Instead, he focuses on the terrifying reality of investigators trapped in a fractured nation where law abiding citizens pay the price for systemic breakdown.
You can feel the deep anxiety of the personnel trying to hold the line while the streets become battlegrounds around them. It honors the mental stamina required to protect a community that has completely lost faith in the system.
Social Media Idea: This book deserves far greater visibility than it currently has. To boost its presence among thriller groups, the promotional team needs a dark, moody video trailer. Combining audio clips of sirens with stark graphic text overlays will heavily increase shareability and help this exceptional story reach the massive audience it deserves.

Reading -30- by Rex Canyon was truly a delightful experience. Right from the start, I found myself intrigued about where the story would take me, and as I turned each page, my investment in Jim Jacobs and the tough spot he’s in only deepened. There were definitely times when I wanted to shout at him to take a breather and think things through before making his next move!

What stood out to me the most was how the narrative weaves together suspense with genuine human challenges. Jim isn’t your typical flawless hero, which made him feel all the more real to me. I also appreciated the newsroom backdrop and how the author delves into themes of truth, justice, and personal accountability, all while maintaining the story's gripping tension.

All in all, this book is one of those reads that lingers in your mind long after you’ve closed it. I loved the captivating storytelling, the moral intricacies, and how everything ties back to larger questions about life and society. I’d gladly recommend -30- to anyone who enjoys crime fiction that has both depth and a narrative that keeps you pondering.

Happy reading ✨❤️

A Gripping and Thought Provoking Thriller!

This great story by Rex Canyon is a compelling political thriller that explores the fine line between justice and revenge. The story pulls you into a world where frustration with the system pushes people to their breaking point, and one man's actions spiral into something much bigger than anyone could have imagined.

What I enjoyed most is how the book makes you question morality, accountability, and how far someone should go in the name of justice. The suspense and escalating tension keep things engaging, while the deeper themes give you plenty to think about even after finishing the book.

Overall, a gripping, timely, and thought-provoking read that I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys political thrillers with meaningful themes and difficult questions.

Rex Canyon’s 30 is a narrative masterclass in high concept hooks. The premise a city split over a vigilante named the Reaper is highly marketable because it directly taps into modern algorithmic trends regarding true crime and political suspense.
However, the title currently suffers from a critical visibility bottleneck. To transform this Kindle Edition into a breakout digital product, the promotional roll out must pivot immediately to video asset deployment. Text alone cannot convey the claustrophobic dread of the Kansas City street battlegrounds. The campaign requires a high production value video trailer that utilizes flashing red lights and typewriter text animations. Boosting a visually striking asset like that on social channels will dramatically scale user conversion rates and maximize visibility among core suspense demographics.

📚🔥 A powerful, unsettling story that makes you question justice, morality, and how far people can be pushed!

I just finished reading "-30-" by Rex Canyon, and honestly, the premise really got me thinking. This is the kind of story that feels frighteningly close to reality because it explores what happens when ordinary citizens lose faith in the very system meant to protect them.

The idea of a mysterious killer known as the Reaper is especially intriguing. Is he simply a murderer, or do people see him as someone delivering the justice they believe the government has failed to provide? I found this moral conflict fascinating because it challenges the reader to think about the thin line between justice and revenge. 🖤

What really caught my attention was how one killing grows into something much bigger, sparking protests, violence, and a nationwide crisis. The tension surrounding a divided society makes the story feel intense and unpredictable. I also appreciated the deeper questions it raises about public trust, accountability, and what can happen when frustration turns into desperation.

The title -30- is particularly meaningful, carrying a sense of finality while suggesting that sometimes people reach a point where they simply cannot take any more.

Overall, this sounds like a thought-provoking thriller for readers who enjoy dark, socially relevant stories that go beyond the crime itself. ⭐📖

“-30-” is the kind of book that leaves you thinking long after you’ve finished reading. The title itself carries weight, and the story delivers a powerful sense of urgency, conflict, and determination.

What I appreciated most is the way the book explores what happens when a nation becomes deeply divided and ordinary people are pushed toward a moment where they can no longer remain silent. The writing creates a strong atmosphere while keeping the central message at the heart of the story.

Thought-provoking, engaging, and emotionally resonant, this is a book that feels bigger than its pages. It raises difficult questions and encourages the reader to consider the consequences of division, choices, and standing up for what matters.

A memorable read with real substance.

What I enjoyed most about -30- was how it made the idea of justice feel complicated. Jim Jacobs is not the kind of character you can simply label as good or bad, and that made his choices much more interesting to follow. The story mixes crime, politics, the media, and revenge in a way that keeps the tension building without feeling predictable. I especially liked seeing how one decision can create consequences that spread far beyond the person who made it. It’s the kind of thriller that gives you plenty to think about after you finish reading, especially when it comes to justice and how far someone should go to get it.

This book is pulled me in because it doesn’t make the line between right and wrong feel simple. Jim Jacobs is dealing with anger, loss, and a strong sense of justice, but watching his decisions unfold made me keep wondering where that line should really be drawn. I also enjoyed the way the story brings in the media, politics, crime, and the reactions of ordinary people as everything starts getting bigger than one person. There’s a steady tension throughout, and I found myself thinking about the consequences of each choice long after the scene was over. Definitely a thriller with more to it than just action.

When Justice Becomes a Question of Power

What happens when people stop believing that the system will deliver justice? That question lies at the heart of -30-, a political thriller with a premise that touches on some of the most difficult issues facing society.

Through its themes of immigration, public safety, and vigilantism, the story invites readers to consider how tragedy and frustration can push people toward extreme choices. Jim Jacobs’ transformation into the Reaper raises an unsettling question: when someone decides to take justice into their own hands, are they correcting a broken system or creating another kind of danger?

What makes this premise compelling is its potential to spark debate beyond the pages. Questions about who deserves protection, how power should be exercised, and where accountability begins are rarely simple. They become even more complicated when personal grief collides with political tensions and public opinion.

For readers drawn to political suspense that engages with controversial social issues, -30- offers a premise that encourages reflection on justice, responsibility, and the consequences of taking matters into one's own hands.

**A Gripping Story That Raises Difficult Questions**

*-30-* sounds like the kind of political thriller that stays with you because it explores more than crime and violence. Through its themes of immigration, justice, and vigilantism, the story raises difficult questions about what happens when people lose faith in the systems meant to protect them.

The premise of Jim Jacobs becoming the Reaper after a tragic death gives the story a compelling moral conflict. When someone takes justice into their own hands, where does the line between seeking justice and becoming part of the problem begin to blur?

What makes this premise especially thought-provoking is its connection to real-world social issues. It invites readers to look beyond the action and consider the consequences of anger, injustice, and the choices people make when they feel the system has failed them.

This one actually made me stop and think a few times. I liked Jim because he didn’t feel completely good or completely bad. You could understand where his anger came from, even when some of his choices were hard to agree with.

I also liked how the story showed the effects his actions had on other people and how quickly things got out of control. There’s a real sense of tension as the story moves along, but what stayed with me most was the question of whether getting justice is worth becoming the kind of person you once stood against. Definitely a thought-provoking read.
