The recent past of the COVID-stricken year 2020 and the distant future of humanity’s space expansion move along parallel tracks in a story that fuses cyberpunk sci-fi with Russian "criminal gothic." At least, they do until the very end. In the finale, the storylines converge, and two women—who initially seem to have nothing in common—turn out to be mirror images of one another. But before that happens, Svetlana Chvertko puts both women through a series of life-threatening trials designed to keep the reader entertained.

Anna and her husband, Yevgeny, are spending the lockdown at his parents' country estate—though calling it a mere *dacha* is a bit of a stretch. It is a spacious country house that once belonged to his grandfather, a Soviet *nomenklatura* official; it features gas heating, underfloor heating, a housekeeper, and a host of outbuildings on the grounds. Sharing the space with the couple are Yevgeny’s father and grandfather, his widowed uncle and the uncle's son, and the aforementioned housekeeper. The men are educated and well-mannered, though each harbors his own peculiar quirks; the aunt is a shrew who behaves like a classic nightmare mother-in-law; and the boy, Misha, is frankly odd—displaying traits that could be Asperger’s or simply eccentricity.

It has all the makings of a *Decameron*-style quarantine: plenty of space, endless food, and respectable company. Yet Anna is far from happy. A perfectionist with a need for control, she is frustrated by the way remote work has made her colleagues slack off and overwhelmed by her own sudden abundance of free time. Channeling the spirit of Tom Sawyer and Misha Polyakov (from *The Bronze Bird*), she begins exploring the estate in search of trouble—and finds it. Add to this the fact that all the men are widowers, the housekeeper Zhanna is suspicious, and the boy regularly hides things and issues frightening warnings. Yvonne, the second protagonist, lives under a dome in a utopian colony on an Earth-like planet where disease and death have been conquered. The local hierarchy follows a standard pyramidal structure: the "Greys" (named for the color of their jumpsuits) occupy the outer rim, beyond which lies a lifeless wasteland; the "Whites" are at the center; and between them lies a vast stratum of "Middles." Yvonne belongs to the Middles and is married to Rob, a promising specialist; until recently, she worked as a caregiver, but a recent system update left her unemployed. She hasn't lost her "Middle" privileges—Rob is too valuable to the colony for them to demote his wife to "Grey" status—but her forced idleness drives her to spend all her free time in a virtual reality game.

Yvonne devotes the time not taken up by the game or socially significant projects to searching for Amelia, a friend and former colleague with whom she lost touch after being laid off. The most baffling aspect isn't the young woman's disappearance, or even the fact that all traces of her seem to have been wiped from the search system; it is that the people Yvonne questions about her friend have no memory of her either. Her search leads her into a troubled "Grey" district, brings her into contact with dangerous individuals, and forces her to make risky decisions.

"It Is Now Safe to Turn Off Your Computer" pretends to be a cohesive whole but is actually cobbled together haphazardly. It is a Frankenstein’s monster of a story, stitched together from the author’s COVID-era blog posts and a completely separate sci-fi tale about androids. The former is heavily influenced by Daphne du Maurier’s *Rebecca*, while the latter is a blend of *Brave New World* and *The Murderbot Diaries*. The logic falters and the motivations are bizarre: while Anna’s investigation might be explained by boredom, Yvonne’s sudden transformation from a mousy housewife into a kamikaze agent stretches credulity too far. The endings of both parts are sloppily cut off. And no, this isn't an open ending that leaves the reader with plenty to ponder. Open endings are rarely justified, and few authors pull them off well; an adventure-driven plot requires a proper resolution—something this story fails to deliver.
