Rupanya manga ni prekuel Barakamon, Mengisahkan tentang zaman persekolahan Handa-kun. Best jgk plotnya, penuh dengan salah faham. Bolehlah dibuat bacaan ringan...

Sometimes I pick up manga because I've heard good things, or seen interesting ads or reviews. And sometimes I pick up manga because I spy several volumes sitting on the library shelf and I have little impulse control. This is the latter.

So, going in with absolutely no knowledge of the series other than what's on the back cover, it's always a happy surprise when it's a fun read!

This is, truly, a comedy of errors. Teen boy is idolized for being a famous calligrapher, so his classmates keep a respectful distance--which makes him think everyone hates him. A girl asks him to meet her after school so she can confess her crush, while he thinks he's being called out to a fight. Classmates have someone else take over his cleaning duty, reasoning he has calligraphy practice and doesn't need to do dirty work, but all he sees is the group pushing him to leave and sounding happy when he's gone.

Each chapter in this first volume is just another event, each one slightly wackier than the previous, and it's just plain fun. The titular Handa-kun is enjoyable--the closest comparison I can come up with is Ranmaru from Bisco Hatori's Behind the Scenes!, but Handa is less anxious and over-reactive. Both characters assume that bad things or weird reactions are their fault, but Handa is more resigned to [what he thinks is] his fate, where Ranmaru was a high-strung nervous wreck.

(Of course, Handa's even-keeled appearance are what keeps his story going, since he seldom explains what he thinks is going on.)

Art was fabulous but the story didn’t quite make it.

This really had promise. I was super excited to read this when I picked it up from the library. One of the things I didn’t realize before I started it was the genre. This is a contemporary comedy. (And here I was thinking I stumbled onto a shojo.)

A lot of the time when the jokes were cracked or whatever, it wasn’t really funny. It was pushing the joke too far. The premise is great but the execution wasn’t.

I did enjoy the art. It’s more simplistic than the cover (another thing I didn’t realize) and leans more towards the satire manga art style.

All in all, it didn’t hit all my checkboxes, but it hit quite a few. Give it a shot!

I read through six volumes of this series in three days, and I'm giving it three stars overall, but mostly on the strength of the first and last volumes and the Barakamon series of which it is a spin-off. This series is actually pretty disappointing. The set-up seems humorous at first, with our hero believing himself to be the most hated person at his high school, while he is actually admired as the coolest. But the repetition of all the gags around this single theme stretches the limits of my patience by the end. I like the introduction of the side characters in the first few volumes, but then the creator flounders about, filling the latter volumes with high school manga cliches such as a class trip to Kyoto and a school festival. And having introduced the side characters, all the creator can think to do with them is pit them against a set of exact doppelgangers from another school for several volumes? Wasted potential.

Very cute comedy of errors type story. The mc is handsome and well regarded, but his internal pessimism means he takes everything poorly and the wrong way so his interpretation of events is always incorrect. I could see this being used to pretty good effect for awhile but it would get old eventually. Apparently this is a prequel series to Barakamon, so I'll have to check that out too. The art is appealing, pretty normal style for a school story I think, not quite like cutey shojo or fashionable or serious horror/action. More structured panels than most manga, 4 horizontal panels across each page, lots of simplified drawings since the panels get small, but it works. Reminds me a lot of Haven't You Heard, I'm Sakamoto. The more I read the more I was reminded of it! It has a bit of a surreal tone, in the differing interpretations of everything. It's like Sakamoto if you had insight into what he was thinking of stuff. Handa is very like him on the outside.

I've seen the anime and its origin series Barakamon, but it has been awhile. It was pleasant enough to revisit the characters and events through the manga.

As far as I could tell, the only new material was:
- 4 pages of comic strips, which included a funny unwitting chase scene and payback for Tsutsui, who returned to school and was now too big and strong to be bullied.
- 1 illustration and 1 page of comic strips featuring cute little Naru from Barakamon.
- Translators notes, which mentioned the Chinese tradition of calling brush, paper, ink and inkstone "the Four Treasures," elevating calligraphy/writing to a literal treasure.

There were 5 chapters, and I marked a LOL moment in 3 of them.

I don't plan on investing in more manga books from this series, but it was fun enough to read.

Read till Chapter 10.

This is my kind of manga, where the characters and plot are very silly, in a funny way. It wasn't what I was thinking, in fact, it was quite the contrary. It is true that Handa thinks everybody hates him (while in fact, everybody admires him), but his POV takes about 2 chapters or so. After that, it is the POV of all his classmates and rivals/admirers. For example, a student who wants to be the class representative, and who thinks Handa is his biggest competition. Handa doesn't want to be the representative, so it is all a bis misunderstanding. New characters keep coming, each one of them seeing Handa as a rival first, and then, as his hero. It is pretty funny, and I think it will work splendidly as a 12-episode anime.

I started out reading this book because of the cover and since it got really funny I continue reading. Handa-Kun has a unique kind of comedy, where the main character is very clueless and sorta dumb kind of comedy which is something I enjoy a lot. As I continue to read I saw that the plot wasn't really that interesting because no matter what the main character would stay clueless. Although I'm not sure if this continues in the next volume or not, if it does then I would really want to know how Satsuki Yoshino would make it interesting to read. I would recommend this book to whoever is bored and want to have a bit of joy to read this book, but other than that I would really recommend it for any serious reading.

This was good. Everything is the spitting image of Barakamon and that's great.

Some things I learned from this volume:

1. Not speaking up and assuming all the time will lead to misunderstandings of character and values.

2. Overthinking is a killer.

3. Stalking is not an ok thing to do.

😅...🤣

Although Barakamon, comparatively, has a more progressive storyline, I had some great laughs and overall enjoyment in here! I'd recommend this to someone if they're looking for something casual and easy to get through.

3.5

I loved Barakamon, and obviously was excited for a prequel series.

It is a very different vibe as this is a different Handa than we are used too, which is weird seeing he matures a lot from the first time we see him in that series to the end. I expected him to be more similar to when he arrived on the island. He's still a little the same, but I'm kinda shocked by the relationships he was with others.

So far I am enjoying it, but its not an instant love like the last series was for me.

3,5 stars actually

Loveable yet frustrating with all of his misunderstanding...

yuk lanjoottt....

*I kind of fainted by laughing too much don't mind me*
Not as diverse as Barakamon but that's expected because this is more of a self-indulgent, spin-off series having a bit of nonsensical fun with Seishhuu's character aye?
I loved it, so much
and the anime was even better!Using all the usual high school anime tropes and giving them the spin that is Handa's 'I'm so hated' COMEDYGOLD!!!! dnfrgfjrj Loved it <3

I loved the anime Barakamon, it was really cute, so when this series, about Handa the caligrapher, came out about his high school years I decided to give it a try. This first volume has me chuckling out loud many times at just the sheer silliness of some of the situations Handa-kun gets in. But if it continues in the same vein, the same gag over and over again, it's going to get stale real quick.

This was cute but a little more juvenile than I expected. The Three's Company/comedy of errors schtick that it relied on throughout got tiresome pretty early and lacked the heart that Barakamon has. I thought this would start to give more depth to Handa's character, but it did the exact opposite. Maybe it will get better.

Thought this would be a popular school story type of genre, I’m not wrong but with the Hanada-kun trying to survive high school of not being a popular boy?

His shyness is a fault from a good friend of his who’s is attending the same school as him. Many friends were made but… due to Hanada-kun obvious thinks that they hate him?? Oh boy.

Really funny read! Poor Handa only wants to be left alone but thinks everyone is out to get him. Secretly everyone admires him and wants to be his friend. Sure leaves you wondering what'll happen next!

2020 Read #622

There are better manga out there than this one about classmates revolving around someone who has questionable social skills. Read Komi Can’t Communicate or Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun for better characters and comedy.
