The Trilopods arrive, and no monster is safe! Will Godzilla be able to help save the planet? And which Kaiju will help or hinder him? Collects the conclusion of the series issues #21-25.
This is the end of this huge Godzilla tale. And, just as in the movies, they save the best for last; The final monster battle. All the threads come together as Godzilla and a pantheon of monsters fight off an alien invasion led by alien hybrid monsters. This final battle takes up most of the book so if you're looking for some emotional context or deep underlying meanings: Forget it. This is a Godzilla book and the big man doesn't do that kind of stuff. The action is plentiful and the panels are dynamic and vibrant but I did find them confusing. As one monster fought another I did find myself getting lost. I was not sure who was fighting whom and because the bad monsters were hybrid-clones of the good monsters I found myself having to give a lot of the images a second glance. Still, an enjoyable read and quick to get through this book was not a disappointment and the series as a whole was a winner. Finally, Godzilla has been given a storyline equal to his standing as the King of Monsters.
This features just about every monster, and I think that as I look back over it I will likely find some I've missed.
It is the culmination of the previous five volumes and we have a full blown alien invasion, where they are harvesting the DNA of the monsters to make their own copies and sending them out to destroy the Earth.
Great to see old school monsters like King Caesar turn up to help save the day. I won't say anymore, except that because the writers knew this was the end, they are able to give the story a nice satisfying ending (which can be rare in graphic novel series).
When the series has basically used all the monsters from land and space, mechs, and a couple of alien races, the only thing to do; is start making hybrids. In the last volume, aliens use creatures called Trilopods which can use the genetic material from monsters they bite to mutate into a hybrid monster. This volume is pretty much pure action, involving most of the entire lineup of monsters featuring across these volumes, and battling these Trilopods. With the amount of energy beams and explosions, and the similarity of many monsters, the action is often difficult to follow.
A pretty good ending to an decent comic, this series was not amazing but it was ok as a read. The final showdown was worth it though as you saw pretty much every monster fighting the big bad guy and the art was pretty good for it. But the human side of things was really not that interesting but it was still ok.
Every ten pages they throw another kaiju at us, never giving any time for development - and yes I know how ridiculous it is to expect 'character development' among giant punchy bitey monsters - which leaves the entire story without depth or suspense.
This was my second ever Godzilla book and being this was volume 6 I was at a complete loss because I didn't 't know anything that came before and I hardly am familiar with many of the monsters. I do know from my little knowledge of the old Godzilla movies that the asian girls that are fairy sized were in the story.
