first off, this is going to be long, so i am sorry about that.
i’m going to be so completely honest, this book is giving written by ChatGPT. i don’t want to go throwing accusations around, but it got to the point where i was like girl, you’re not even trying to hide it.
there’s a lot of, it’s not x, not y, but z moments. i started highlighting them because oh my god it was everywhere. here are some examples:
“Magic surges up—not into words, not into lyrics, but into the blade itself—Aurora drinking it in and amplifying it until the air tastes like ozone.”
“Not the onstage quiet. Not the interview quiet. A different kind—like she’s holding her breath so she doesn’t say the wrong thing and make me swing.”
things are also very commonly explained in threes. example:
“I feel it in my bones: the net tightening. The air changing. A pressure shift like the room exhales and decides to become a cage.”
“The construct’s edges flicker, briefly revealing wrongness beneath the sim’s skin: threads of compulsion, stitched loops of familiarity, the pattern trying to wear the shape of something comforting.”
the descriptions of people and almost everything except for places was basically non-existent. i am one of those people that when i read, i can basically see what’s happening inside my head like a movie. in this, i was just very confused on what i was supposed to be envisioning. what do the characters look like? i couldn’t tell you. i remember one of them being blonde and one of them having a bob or something. also, the first demon they encounter is literally just said to be a mass?? i will provide the example because it made me laugh:
“At first it looks like haze. Like smoke catching wrong light. Then it swirls, thickens, and the air itself becomes a knot of sound and memory as it drops into the warded area. The Chorus. Not one body. Not one mouth. A mass. A rotating storm of half-heard melodies—Harbor Lights jingles, fairground keyboard loops, old radio hooks that have lived in this town for decades. It doesn’t speak; it sings in fragments, trying to find our rhythm.”
and even in that example there is the part where it’s like, the chorus, not this, not that, but a mass. like are you seeing it now? it is everywhere in this book. i had almost 50 highlights and i only got about 40% of the way through this book.
let me just say i LOVED the idea of this book. i am a very big fan of kpop demon hunters and its obvious that’s where the idea of this came from. i am a sucker for yearning but every character felt so boring, i felt like i didn’t know what was happening a lot of the time because the lack of description, and the fact that i think its ai just really put me off.
a year or so ago i got into doing creative writing on ChatGPT and character ai. because of this, i felt like that’s why i noticed it immediately. am i proud of this? no. but that also showed me that a literal computer cannot write human experiences, because obviously it’s not a human, and when you try to make it do that, the writing it spits out comes out like this. it just feels soulless and confusing.
anyway, if i’m wrong, then i sincerely apologize. if it somehow was just genuinely written this way then i would be surprised, because ai and especially ChatGPT has a very distinct writing style. i don’t want to attack the author here but i haven’t seen anyone else talk about it in reviews, and wanted people to be aware i noticed it!
