Sophiel is trapped, kept hostage in Elijah’s castle by the courtesans who block her every move, the Magus who lurks in the shadows and the feelings she has for Elijah, the dark angel who saved her life. Lost within the war that she was sent from Heaven to fight, and pursued by sahrans and witches who threaten her life at every turn, she is the only one left to protect Joshua, the summoner child. Forced to choose between the allies of Heaven, and Elijah, with whom she is falling in love, can Sophiel complete her mission to rescue the lost souls of the dead? Or will she instead succumb to the human desires that consume her?
In the wars that rage between Heaven and Hell the greatest battles of all are waged within the heart…

This was much better than the first book in the series. Elijah is more involved in the story and more protective of Sophiel.
Sophiel is now 'owned' by Elijah, but she had to be branded for her safety. She also feels guilty for loving Elijah because it makes her feel like a traitor. How can she love the enemy?
Elijah makes changes in his home. He even gets rid of his courtesans. Because of Sophiel, he doesn't need anyone else.
"The Dark Angel was in love. After thousands of years of wars and struggle, he was at a loss for the first time in his life."
The story moves a lot faster than the first book (thank goodness). And the forest dwellers and fairies are excluded in book 2. There's no hanky panky, but lots of passionate kisses. If you read the first book, you know AO Esther ended with a cliff hanger. Don't be surprised to see the same thing here. :)
Okay...I just really had to get that out. So this book was a lot better than the first. The translation seemed to be done better and the story itself was just fantastic. Probably mostly because we got a lot of Elijah this time. Gawd, I love that guy (and his weapon! That thing is awesome!)...he may be a dark angel but he is such a sweet guy and clearly devoted to Sophiel in his own way. They both freely admit the feelings they have for the other and each experience such a sense of peace and happiness that they don't want to lose it. But neither can go to the other side.
We pick up as if there is no break between this book and the last with Sophiel going to be branded as Elijah's. There's no getting around it, even though Elijah doesn't want it for her. Still, when the Magus goes too far with his desire to inflict pain on her (because that guy is seriously demented), Elijah will stand for none of that. After that whole ceremony is done, a lot of the book is about the two of them together and Sophiel learning more about so many different things. She finds out not only more about Elijah and the reason for his fall, but also that things perhaps are not quite as black and white between the sides as she had thought. She gets first hand experience of just how cruel humans can be, and conversely, how kind the dark angels can be. She definitely finds herself and her faith wavering.
When Elijah's castle is destroyed and the survivors seek shelter at Baldo's, Sophiel's conflictions come to a head and she is faced with the hardest decision she has ever had to make. Does she follow thru with what her original mission was on Earth, or does she follow her heart? And her decision nearly destroys so much despite the good that came of it.
We end with Sophiel pretty much being banished and treated as a traitor by her own people before going on a trip with Joshua. Though not spoken at first, they both know where they are going to end up. It seemed rather easy for them to reach their final destination, but perhaps they just had incredibly good luck with it all. Didn't really matter...after Elijah and Sophiel parted ways with each other, my addiction to the story also seemed to part ways a bit.... Anyway...After finding what they were searching for, all ends well. Until Sophiel turns around. Oh, she's in so much trouble now...
One thing I didn't mention with the last book was that with the translation, there was an absurd amount of exclamation points. This time around, it doesn't seem as bad but there still were a lot of them. And so many of them just seem completely out of place.

Sophiel is trapped, kept hostage in Elijah’s castle treated as one of his many women by everyone but Elijah. Her every move is watched and now she has been branded and is Elijah's property. However Elijah does not treat her like property and has only been soft and kind to her, except for letting them brand her. Sophiel is confused by Elijah but she has larger problems, mainly the Magus, whom she is sure is up to something.
Now Sophiel is torn between her feelings for Elijah and the duty she knows she must fullfill. Her fellow angels need her help but she has to decide if she is willing to lose Elijah in order to do her duty.
Sophiel is torn in this installment about the love and attraction she feels for Elijah and doing what she knows is right. The one who really starts to change in this book is Elijah for he begins to see there is a much larger area of grey and that maybe his love for Sophiel is the only really goodness he has ever really known.
