I didn't like this. It was gross in a way that, as Carmen might say, will put you off men.

Kitty Thomas leaves me with the same feeling every time I finish reading one of her books - craving. I know that there are a lot of dark and erotic novels out there now, but back when I first started "exploring", her wicked storytelling was my complete undoing.

Why?

description

Because she doesn't usually do anything half way. Some of her stories are kind of "romanticized", but in the end (no matter if they are paranormal or realistic), Kitty Thomas is the queen of master/slave erotica.

5 twisted, mind-fuckery stars!

What a book! I bought this book today (release day), read it immediately and finished it in one sitting. I don't know why I'm surprised really. Kitty Thomas is a one click author for me. I've read (and loved) everything she's written to date and this book is another I can add to the list of beautifully written, mind fucks. If you're not convinced there is such a thing, there is, trust me. Kitty's writing just makes me feel so much. She really is the queen of dark and twisted stories and they appeal to my twisted brain.

While this didn't beat Comfort Food or Tender Mercies for me (both are beloved and have had many re-reads), it's a very close third and I will definitely re-read.

First of all, it was completely unique. Despite being part dystopian/ part fantasy, I enjoyed it just as much as her contemporary dark fiction. It's also completely different to her other supernatural/ fantasy books too. I have no idea where Kitty gets her ideas from but I'd love to steal her brain... In a non creepy way.

I don't really want to say too much about this book as it really was unique and I don't want to spoil anything.

I'll say that long time fans of Kitty Thomas will likely love this. As usual the story is dark, twisted and leaves your brain and heart a confused mess while you curse it for ending.

"I looked into your eyes, and I saw my own reflection."
A classic Kitty Thomas-style read. It was DARK, off-beat, and not run-of-the-mill. If you're feeling the need for a PNR/vampire read coming on, I recommend!

3.5 STARS

I was going between 3 and four stars for this book. It had an original take on the vampire storyline, mixing it up with a dystopian background. I really liked it, but not as much as Comfort Food and The Last Girl.

KT always delivers highly entertaining and absorbing erotica. Her plots aren't solely sex-based, which I'm so thankful for. She actually incorporates a real story into her work. This was a tamer version of stuff I've read by her. Big Sky was the most disturbing, though! That book really pushed the envelope into WTF territory, but at least it was original.

I loved the whole concept of 1000 hours for day and night in this book. Gabriel was a different yet compassionate vampire and I liked how Helene never cowered to him. This was not a romance since this is master/slave erotica, but it still hovers in that general direction with undercurrents of emotion and possession. If you've read Kitty Thomas before you'll know what I mean. Overall, this was good. I have nothing negative to say, just an enjoyable read.

3.5 Night Stars :D

“Death seemed to me like a welcome breath of crisp fresh air. And I wasn’t sure if I could feel pain anymore. It would have to penetrate the layers and layers of numbness that had wrapped around me hour by hour as the countdown clocks ticked relentlessly on. Toward day or toward night, it didn’t matter anymore. The point was that they ticked, and as long as they did, any freedom was an illusion.”
- Helene

“I’ve never met a human who, in the end, didn’t beg for their life to be spared. I could never relate to clinging to a world of suffering like they did. I’ve felt the same as you. I’ve struggled with why I should go on at all. I looked into your eyes, and I saw my own reflection. I thought if I could make you want to be here in the world, I could make myself want to be here. But that isn’t what happened. I don’t want to be here because I somehow fixed you and believe there’s hope for me. I just want to be here with you. You make me want to get through day to get back to you.”
- Gabriel

“There is a balance in even the most extreme worlds. It’s my turn to be in the cage and your turn to be free for a while. Enjoy your freedom and your time in the sun while it lasts. I’ll see you tonight. I promise.”

This author is a little hit or miss for me. This one is strange--it starts out reading like dystopian scifi but is really paranormal. Super creative world building, but I had difficulty caring about the heroine.

This world alternated between 1000 hours of darkness (night) and 1000 hours of light (day). People must be civil and obey the law during the day, but at night anything is fair game. Being caught outside at night was dangerous. Helene wasn't able to make it home before night and was captured.

I didn't like either of the main characters. At the beginning Helene was severely depressed. Although I understood why she felt the way she did, I couldn't empathize with her. About halfway through her emotional state changed. I really couldn't connect with her at that point. Her feelings just weren't believable. Gabriel liked to be in control. The only thing to like about him was that he could have been worse and wasn't.

The paranormal aspect was downplayed. Gabriel was a vampire. He drank blood, could alter people's thoughts, and was weakened during the day. The paranormal stuff could have been taken out and the story would have been pretty much the same.

Gabriel's behavior wasn't any different than most powerful men in dark romances. Romance isn't really the right word to define this story. There weren't any love or heartfelt feelings. Helene was Gabriel's captive until morning came. It annoyed me that Helene was special in Gabriel's eyes; he treated her differently than the average captive. There were several sex scenes, which were consensual, but they were more clinical than erotic.

Okay, this is a strange book, but what else would you expect from Kitty Thomas. Kitty is one of my favorite authors, and a new book by her is always an event I look forward to. She does not disappoint with Dark Night of the Soul.

Imagine a dystopian novel, crossed with vampire erotica, and you might have a little idea what it's about. Helene lives in a horrific world, a future earth where a single day and night takes 2000 hours to complete, 1000 daylight hours and 1000 hours in the dark. During the day, life is pleasant enough, as violence is forbidden, but once the night comes, all bets are off. The daylight rules go out the window, and it's a violent free-for-all.

Helene is tired of living. Tired of the struggle to make it through the long nights. Wracked with guilt, she would have just ended it all if it wasn't for her sister. Her sister depends on her, and Helene does not want to let her down.

Trying to get emergency medicine for her sister, she finds herself caught outside when the sun goes down, and her chances are not looking good to get home to her sister in one piece. Suddenly, she finds herself kidnapped by parties unknown and transported to a mysterious mansion.

There she meets Gabriel, the secretive ruler of the city. Can Gabriel give Helene something to live for? Can Helene give Gabriel a reason to keep on leading his people as he's continued to do for thousands of years?

Do not go into this book, or really any book by Kitty Thomas, looking for a typical romance. You won't find it, and it's certainly not in this book either. But in spite of that, there is eroticism in the book, and a message about the value of life and death. It's a dark book, but it's not gratuitously dark. The darkness has a purpose. Go into the book prepared to have your mind blown, and you won't be disappointed.

"I felt that if his hand stayed there long enough, surely he could melt the block of ice around me, and I would awaken some new creature that saw the world in full color."

The Queen of Dark Erotica has written a different take on the vampire legend, where there are a 1,000 hours of day and night.

Helene is tired of the endless hours of feeling nothing...of being lost in a darkness within herself and just wants it to end. The only thing that keeps her going is not wanting to leave her sister alone to fend for herself.

Gabriel is the King of the Darkness, and when Helene is taken captive, he sees her as a kindred spirit and spares her if she agrees to call him "Master" and serve him for the 1,000 hours of night. He vows to care for her sister during this time if Helene behaves.

During their time together, Helene and Gabriel fight, love, and discover that there is still hope for something more than just existing.

Loved this story!!

This was an interesting story. Well, the premise was interesting. Kind of "The Purge" meets a paranormal romance by way of vampires. I was drawn in immediately, and remained engaged throughout the entire book. I did the audiobook version, and that too was well done. There was BDSM and a slave theme going on, and while those are far from my favorite tropes, they didn't bother me too much. And neither did the blood play. What didn't work for me, was the ending.

Dark Night of the Soul by Kitty Thomas Kitty Thomas you have done it again!! Another fabulous story, I didn't want Gabriel and Helene story to end (I felt like the dreaded countdown clock was against me as I got closer to the end of the story).

I love the way Kitty wrapped up the story in the end, providing an insight of how life is for the both of them; how they lived and experienced the day and the night when separate. Remember, the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side (of day or night).

This story was so riveting! A unique twist to the Vampire history. It is both a dark yet emotional story of two characters finding each other and giving each other what they need to continue living in a dangerous world. Bravo Kitty Thomas on another fascinating tale!

Kitty is a incredible author her imagination and storytelling skills are beyond expectations. Whenever I watch a movie or read books with vampires in it. I have always felt sympathy to vampires and there existence. But I could never truly empathize with them because to empathize you would have to be in their shoes and feel what they experience.

This is where this book comes it gives readers to genuinely feel pain, misery and sadness the way vampire's feel in the form of the whole time concept in the book. Its a tricky concept to go along paranormal which could have gone wrong but Kitty did a brilliant job to keep it equal standards.

Beware some folk might think the heroine situation is too gruesome in a depressive since. But if you look at a vampire existence without looking at the superficial things like, power, beauty and immortality. There is also a reality that you might choose not to see living immortal when your loved ones die , the price of power comes from the price of murdering innocent life, having that crime on your consciousness, price of pain and being stuck with emotions that hurt you, anger, grief and depression for immortally is a huge burden. I know some people like to read to forget real life and so do not like anything depressing or bad . i'm not saying the book is depressing its also a emotion Helena expresses including a number of other's.

So why 4stars although I loved the book and would probably read it again . This book never felt like it was written by Kitty. I have read her books and her eroticais are raw, savage, hononst , animalistic not for the soft hearted or clean romance readers. But this book cannot be classified as a erotica. The scenes were like watching a gynecologist check up all clinical. Your gynecologist will touch you intimate places but there is no intimacy in the act. That is only way I can explain it usually I could read her books and get mesmerized into the characters but here it felt like a out of body experience each time there was a sex scene. You would be all mesmerize and into the story and then a sex scene come , then your sucked right out . It was quite off putting.

One thing I liked about this book is Kitty made you think , well that was the effect on me. * Mini Spoiler Alert* at some point in the story Helena says to Gabriel your a Monster after viewing a gruesome act. But isn't she also a monster she is sick of her life and hates the feeling of being trap in a timescale that she would rather end it with no thought of her sister. She even resented her sister. Isn't that's also attributes of a monster not caring of another being even though you know your actions will directly cause them pain. In a way we are all monsters and angels due to how we behave and our action.

Another thing is ironic Gabriel name itself means angel but really he's suppose to Bea monster. You need to look closely into kitty books.

As I see them.

Wow, wow, wow, wow ,wow - every time, every book, I am simply blown away.....

This is a Kitty Thomas world, and it stands alone. She always warns people, but sometimes people forget or don't take the warnings. She writes dark and twisted stories, and if you like or love those, she is a master of them, so devour this as all of us who crave that genre do!

In this world, night and day are not on 24 hours, they are on days long. The fairy tales for children explain why, but most just accept it as their reality. During the day, there is law and order and everything is always safe. 40 days of no worries, travelling out in public and enjoying the days. Night is another story, anything goes and lawlessness rules. These 40 days balance the scale

Helene craves neither night or day, but she has to care for her sister Simone since her parents have died. Even after being caught out at night and taken, she doesn't worry what will happen to her, she wants it all done

Gabriel has never seen anything like this, many people say they don't care, but they beg in the end. Helene didn't and he is fascinated. This begins the twisted and painful journey for them both

It is wow, you can't review it without telling the story. There are so many pieces, so many parts, it isn't a story line, it is a story kaleidoscope, there are so many facets and they all shine

Needless to say, the faint of heart need to stay away, but those who are thrilled by the dark and twisted, dive in and you will wallow in this decadence

“Dark Night of the Soul” was my first Kitty Thomas story and I will confess to already reading it three times. There are so many aspects to the story that clicked for me. 1) I always enjoy dystopian-type stories. 2) As someone who had a healthy fear of the dark as a child, the idea that you needed to be locked inside, away from the dark, resonated with me; especially since Helene didn’t make it. 3) That same fear the characters had of the things that go bump in the night even though they had no idea what those things are. 4) Finding out what those things are and being unsure whether their fear is justified or insufficient.

Helene has a death wish. Given her circumstances, I can’t say I blame her. When she’s brought to Gabriel, he promises to set her free but his idea of free and Helene’s are vastly different. What ensues is a battle of wills that was both hard fought and won but as to who is truly the victor depends on point of view.

Gods or monsters? Either way, there’s a symbiotic relationship that exists between them where one cannot exist without the other.

Finally….we get a book that is back to the Kitty Thomas we all know and love.
I absolutely loved this story! And I love her vampires. They’re dark, sexy, dominant, beautiful, and honest.
This is a first dystopian type book for me. I thought it was clever and very well thought out. The only reason it took me forever to read this was because I’ve been traveling and busy with life. But I couldn’t wait to curl up and finish this treat.

I felt like this book was trying too hard. It had picked so many cliched themes common to erotica and just tried to cram them all together, that it left me feeling as if the book were not only incredibly unrealistic but tedious and boring. Toned down a little I feel this good have been better, but as it, it's not one that I'll be recommending to others.
