John Griffith Chaney, better known as Jack London, was an American novelist, journalist and activist. A pioneer of commercial fiction and American magazines, he was one of the first American authors to become an international celebrity and earn a large fortune from writing. He was also an innovator in the genre that would later become known as science fiction.

London was part of the radical literary group "The Crowd" in San Francisco and a passionate advocate of animal rights, workers’ rights and socialism. London wrote several works dealing with these topics, such as his dystopian novel The Iron Heel, his non-fiction exposé The People of the Abyss, War of the Classes, and Before Adam.

His most famous works include The Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in Alaska and the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life". He also wrote about the South Pacific in stories such as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen".

'The Heathen' is one of the greatest stories of friendship that I've ever read. The bond shared by the two characters was as powerful as the storm that prompted their friendship. I'm pretty sure this is my favorite short story. It brings my head closer to my heart, and I always feel better when that happens.

'The Strength of the Strong' offers London's take on early human settlement. Through simple linear storytelling, London not only challenges what we take for granted as the structure of family and community, but brings us to acknowledge how our economy works in some ways on a smaller scale. I think this story would make a good companion to 'The Human Drift.'

📚¡Vamos a leer! 📚

Written a decade before the formation of the Soviet Union and 80 years before its dissolution, short story "The Strength of the Strong" is scarily accurate and prophetic in its depicition of the whole ordeal of USSR: comraderie-driven foundation which quickly morphed into an incredibly cynical system of exploitation (99% of the population - all poor - feeding the nomenclature to its brim; poisionous"engineers of human souls" (bards, writers, etc) that fuel propaganda to the masses; assylums for "inakomyslie" - People who go against the ruling party or advocate peace; the inevitable dissolution of the system due to bankrupt resources and exhausted population.

London called it all right on. Way, way ahead of his time. Chillingly prophetic.

A collection of seven short stories that all involve Socialist party ideals (London was a Socialist). These range in approach. One is from the view point of the speculative history of a pre-historical tribe’s development from a family based social structure (not “strong” because not united) to a pre-capitalist communitarian social structure (“Strong” because united for the common good) to an emergent capitalist-based advanced society (not “Strong” due to extractive economic practices and the casual misuse/abuse of the common member of society). Some are set in the contemporary age, the most notable being “South of the Slot” which not only highlights the economic divide between social classes but also features a man of dual character, living as a welcome member of the society of the haves in his role of university professor of sociology, while covertly disguising himself as a laborer amount the working class in the area “South of the Slot” (the cable car slots that divide the city, like railroad tracks divide areas of town in the more contemporary usage). [Note: I use this one in my American Literature classes with a focus on dual natures and the emergence of suppressed aspects of character in Naturalism]. Other stories range into the future, the most problematic being “The Unparalleled Invasion,” a future history of the threat to the world from the Chinese population bomb, and the eventual crushing of the yellow peril through biological warfare. London’s racial prejudices seemed more focused on Asisans than Blacks or Hispanics, and were always possible of being tempered by his many sympathetic writings about the same Asiatic ethnic groups, but the denunciations of his critics are impossible to refute when confronted with material like this. As for the book, over all it would be possible to write about each story and to wind up with a decent book on London’s socialist beliefs as presented in this one collection.

That was a powerful story. I'm sure it was a parable about the events of the day, back in 1911, but it's equally appropriate for right now. I guess that kind of quality writing is what get labelled "timeless" — when a story can still work its magic literally a century after it was written.
It's really hard to put a label on this one. In most respects it is a fantasy slash parable, but in some ways it's like the original corporate dystopia. Like a very early version of 1984. "Work, do what you're told, defiance equals death." That's a mantra that I've seen in so many SF stories, but I think this has got to be the earliest iteration of it that I've seen.
It's funny. I've read a lot ABOUT Jack London, but this was the first of his fiction that I've actually read, and I was not disappointed.

Purtroppo.

Entertaining listening 🎶🔰

Six will written very short stories by Jack London each story line, interesting characters, and conclusion is different. As with all box 📦 sets some are better than others but I would recommend this novella to anyone looking for a quick read. Enjoy the adventure of reading 👓 or listening 🎶 to Alexa as I do because of eye damage and health issues from shingles. Stay safe 2022

Communist cavemen? Yes, as stupid as that sounds it is what this historically inaccurate heap of horse 💩 is about. But it is revealing in that what communists criminals like London really hate and want to destroy is independent thought, other than their own, of course... Latter day communist criminals call this independent thought “misinformation” and “hate speech”.

While I'm a genuine fan of Jack London, I found this series of short stories to be quite uneven in quality, ranging from hard hitting to elementary.

I'm not particularly a huge fan of Jack London and this anthropological fable seems somewhat naive at times, but at the same time his writing feels raw and truthful. And ultimately this is a story all about 'message' and his is a relevant one.

This particular edition has some truly outstanding artwork by Spanish Illustrator Mar del Valle which makes the book even more worth it. Her 'black and white and blood' style pairs perfectly with London's pen.

M A R A V I L L A😍

gracias al #clubclásicosjuveniles #clubclasicosjuveniles (de IG) me estreno, por fin, con este autor; he elegido este título por una sencilla razón: como yo no tenía en casa ningún libro de Jack London, una amiga me ha prestado el que tenía {por cierto, qué complicado leer un libro prestado, ¡con lo que yo pintorreo los míos!}

erratas encontradas: 2 {🤦🏻‍♀️ ¡psicoanalista ven a mí!}

FRASES SUBRAYADAS:
