Michelle Styles is at her best in the Viking era. Except maybe when she writes ancient Romans...

Lady Edith´s husband rebelled, against her better judgement, and now a group of Vikings is at her estate, claiming ownership of everything. How is Edith to save her people, and herself, or protect her heart against the warrior Brand who manages to get close to her.
Medieval Romance, smutty fluff and Viking Warriors in a great combo.

This was a free book from the goodreads FirstReads program. There isn't much to this book. It is a romance novel with the thin trappings of the Vikings in Northumbria. Just not much to it. Luckily it was a short read.

It ended way too abruptly....and was a little too predictable. But it suited round the pool reading

This was not a well written book. It was choppy and the characters were flat. The author used the phrase "lighten up". I didn't research this fact but I am pretty sure that phrase did not emerge until the 20th century.

Lady Edith of Breckon's husband led an illegal rebellion against the Vikings and died in battle. Now, the much-feared Brand Bjornson has come to claim her lands and home for himself. Lady Edith won't go easily though and refuses to cede to Brand but finally agrees to be his concubine for a year in order to save her people from the Viking invaders. Brand knows that Lady Edith knows where all the treasure is hidden and he intends to find out where. As they begin their dance of victor/vanquished, feelings begin to grow in spite of the situation. Convinced that she's unattractive to men, Lady Edith can not believe her feelings for Brand are returned. When one of the rebels who survived presents a threat to their growing relationship, will Edith risk her people or heart?

The book was well-written, the characters were believable and I love the timeframe. Enjoyable!

This was a disappointing 2.5 star read. There was no world building or real feeling of being tied to the historical era and the hero's actions and reactions just seemed contrived and unrealistic. He tells the heroine repeatedly that she is no more than a mistress for one year and he will marry someone else after that (which given the circumstances in which they are placed together makes some sense initially), but it is his careless repetition of that same statement after they formed a bond that seemed to be contrived to me and only used as a plot point to drive conflict.
