Breaking Faith

Rate this book
Faith made the mistake of giving her heart to someone who didn’t deserve her. After making the decision to leave, she sought refuge at a bar full of misfits. They accepted Faith without question, and now they protect her as if she's family.

While putting the pieces of her life back together, she fights to keep her broken heart from falling for the moody lead singer of the JackholeS.

A man named Kill.

Killian has his own demons to battle, yet Faith brings out his protective side: a side he thought he’d buried long ago.

Can Faith and Kill trust each other long enough to leave their pasts behind and find love? Or is the past too overpowering to allow anyone a chance at happiness?

I live in sunny southern California, and unless I am pulled out of here kicking and screaming (or I am offered an obscene amount of money) I don't ever see myself leaving.
When I am not enjoying the weather, I am stuck in a dark little room rubbing a naked person, and only to be let out every hour on the hour (or if you prefer a simpler term, I am a massage therapist.)
I have had many jobs from working at AT&T, a casino, and even Microsoft, before I started massage. I enjoy talking to people, and love listening to their stories as I feel everyone has a story to tell (some I could live without ever hearing, but who am I to judge.) Massage also allows me time to get my stories in order. When a client falls asleep, my mind will wander creating scenes that I quickly jot down on any available surface until I am able to get in front of my handy dandy laptop.
I live in a chaotic house full of love, and I wouldn't want it any other way. I do enjoy the quiet time when everyone is asleep, and I am able to write with Rock'n'Roll blaring in my ears of course. When I am not touching naked people, or stuck in front of my laptop I love to read. Reading is what inspired me into actually leashing myself to my laptop in order to create my books. I love getting lost in a book, and have been known to fall in love with characters, and hope to invoke that same emotion for my readers.
Other tidbits you may want to know . . . I workout with my niece three times a week where she makes me flip tractor tires, and beat up ship rope (she may be evil.) My favorite color is green, and my favorite number is 8. I love music, especially anything from the rock persuasion, from classic rock like Pink Floyd to my new favorite Halestorm.

Killer Characterization

I met author Joy Eileen on Twitter, where she seems fun and passionate. I'm not surprised her debut novel shares the same qualities.

Faith attends college and works at a coffee shop on campus when she meets hunky Jason, her "knight in coffee justice". Despite the niggling discomfort she feels in Jason's presence, they end up moving in together, and his control over her becomes complete. She tiptoes around trying to avoid his wrath, but he is the one responsible for cutting her down with his words and fists.

When she can't take it anymore, she escapes to meet her friends at a bar where a local band, The Jackholes, plays. Faith feels drawn to the lead singer, Killian. She jumps into help the harried waitress, in the process revealing her bruised arms (to her friends' horror). Kill gets Faith a job as server and a home at his place, to keep her safe from Jason.

Most of the time I dislike scruffy, tatted heroes, but Kill is a dream man. He's not a boorish alpha by any means. His reputation as a man ho goes out the window once he meets Faith. Faith can't deny her attraction to him, but is wary of getting hurt again. He had a sweet, vulnerable side to him he kept hidden. It was because of that side, I needed to avoid him. I already determined he would break my heart if I didn't stay away.

Their banter is hilarious.

We walked to a huge monstrous black truck. I had to practically pole vault into the cab. "Nice truck. Overcompensating?" I asked, glancing at the juncture between his legs.

Kill's laugh was amazing. The rumbling in his chest made my traitorous nipples harden.

Kill is spot on when he tells Faith:

"As your friend I have to say you have an uncanny knack for attracting the biggest poseurs, douche bags, and tools. You're like a beacon." Kill looked up to the ceiling as if he was praying for patience. "You know you look hot. It's like you added an extra strength light bulb to your douche beacon. Every douche for miles will be lined up."

The unresolved sexual tension between Faith and Kill about killed me. I grew to care about Faith and want good things for her.

I did have some quibbles about this book. It needs tightening of the plot and exposition. For how long it is, I expected more resolution of major plot lines. I don't mind cliffhangers but I think it would work better to include the excerpt of the next book as the ending of this one, to give readers some relief from the UST.

A fun, readable debut romance!

I absolutely love this book. I was able to relate to Faith a lot. This book is so well-written and had me giggling all the way through it. Joy has such a unique writing style that you fall in love with all of the characters immediately.
Kill (Killian) is a reason enough to read this book. He is every woman's fantasy and I absolutely loved him. His protective and playful sides combine a great leading man.
This is Joy's break-through novel and it is one I won't be forgetting EVER!! I can't wait to see what happens in the next books, and I am excited to find out. Faith is a great character and I absolutely want to be her friend and hang out with her!!!
I am so excited for Joy and hope everyone will enjoy this book as much as I have. A DEFINITE MUST READ!!!! Love it, Love it , Love it!!!!

For a debut novel, Joy Eileen spares no punches with BREAKING FAITH, the first book in her JackholeS Series. She dives right into the harsh shit, the violent shit, the scary shit and comes out on the other side, leaving her readers with a glimmer of hope, a ray of light, a hint of promise.

Right there, some of you who have read the book might say, hold up, Madhuri, you’ve got it all wrong, the book is full of hope and light and promise because Faith escaped, but that escape was only the beginning.

For those of you who have not read the book, I’m sad for you and also kind of laughing…because I’m a snarky bitch like that and kind of love the fact that I have an ARC and you don’t.

And even though I hate giving recaps of a book in my reviews, since BREAKING FAITH hasn’t released yet, I’ll go against my nature this one time and be kind of nice and give you enough background on it so you know what is the what. Here goes:

Faith meets Jason, who’s gorgeous and charming and knocks her off her feet. They start dating, he turns into a raging asshole with some serious violence issues, she suffers his abuse until she says enough is enough and escapes. She stumbles into a bar and a crew of up-and-coming rock stars and Kill and begins the process of healing herself.

Of course there’s more to the story, so much more, but you’re going to have to grab the book to get all the poignant, sometimes funny, sometimes sexy details.

What I will say is this: Joy does a great job of taking us through the destruction of a young woman by the man she thought loved her, having us live through her heartache and stress and fear. And let me tell you, that stress and fear is palpable – you cringe and your pulse races as you wait for Jason’s next explosion. She then walks us through Faith’s slow and purposeful and determined reclamation of herself and this is what I was talking about earlier – for me that healing process is the glimmer of hope Joy sows in tiny pieces here and there throughout her novel. It’s long and bumpy and just when you think Faith will move forward, she takes a couple of steps backwards, but I loved that about her and found her journey to be refreshingly realistic.

Because we all know what we really wanted to have happen. We wanted Hollywood, lights, camera, sex.

We wanted Kill.

We wanted that moody, sensitive, caring rocker with the sexy, dirty mouth ALL over Faith. We wanted Faith all over him. We wanted them together in the most basic of terms, fucking each others’ brains out every night after work…because we’re all filthy bitches like that.

Instead, Joy teases us, toys with us, makes us all tingly and hot because even though we all love Kill, and we especially love Kill loving all up on Faith, Joy knows that first and foremost, Faith needs to love herself. She needs to heal and put herself back together, slowly and carefully, and once she’s done that, then maybe Faith and Kill will have a future of loving each other.

Unfortunately for us, we’ll have to wait for book II in the series to see if that finally happens.

I hope you’re somewhere right now, furiously writing, Joy. And I hope whatever you’re writing includes lots of Faith and lots of Kill doing lots of deliciously dirty things to each other.

Because I’m a raunchy bitch like that and I know you are, too, girlfriend.

Wow. I love my rock star books, and this one totally surprised me… in a very very very GOOD way! Remember the feeling you got from reading Thoughtless or The Mighty Storm? I never thought I’d find that again (or, if I did it would be a long time coming), but Joy Eileen did it. She gave me that feeling again!

OMG. I can’t even tell you how crazy happy giddy this book had me because of how it made me feel. It’s been while since I’ve been this wrapped-up-with-in-mad-love-with-over-the-moon for a book. This book gave me a serious case of “just one more chapter”. If I didn’t need to sleep and do all the other "life stuff", I swear I would have done this in one sitting.

I loved the slow burn… The chemistry between Faith and Killian is sizzling hot with sexual tension that will drive you mad. The back and forth verbal sparring between the pair to combat the sexual tension is fabulous and witty. This girl certainly goes toe-to-toe with the big bad and super sexy rock God. Killian may be the brooding larger than life rocker with an ego bigger than the stage he sings on, but his bark is most definitely worse than his bite when it comes to Faith. He has a heart of gold when it comes to that girl.

I REALLY LOVED THIS BOOK.

That being said, I did have a few issues with this book. The relationship between Faith and the boys is the cornerstone of the story, but the way in which they are thrown together literally comes out of nowhere. How it happens serves the purpose of mixing their lives together, but it felt a bit a strange. I just wish it was woven in a bit better and felt more natural instead forced.

There is such a thing as too much…. When the hot rock star sees the heroine checking him out and says “see something you like?” yes, it’s definitely hot and cocky but after extensive use the line loses its punch and becomes…. well, repetitive. Also, taking about one’s vagina like it’s a person is definitely a turn off for me. I might have been less bothered by it had it not come up as often as it did.

Considering the page count of this book, I expected more closure on some plot lines. I didn’t expect to totally wrap things up, but a lot of things are no more on their way to wrapping up then when I first opened the book.

And the ending?!?!?!? What the heck was that? I’m the first to admit, I kind of like a good cliffhanger. But THIS???? THIS is more than just a cliffhanger. It sort of just ended. We did get the first chapter of the next book, but I’m not sure how I feel about that. If I can’t get the entire book, I don’t read breadcrumb chapters authors tease with. I don’t see the point. If you’re giving me the next chapter, why not just make it part of the book?

At any rate, I hope I don’t need to wait too long for more Killian, Faith, and the rest of the crew because I REALLY NEED THE NEXT BOOK NOW.

In what world did live in, not to have read this book sooner?!?

I can't explain how much I fell in love with EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER!! It wasn't Kill and Faith that had my attention, but everyone else! So much detail and emotion went into every relationship and all the stories among the characters..

The story was one of a kind.

The writing was beyond words.

The banter??? Omg.. no words can explain how stunning the banter between all the couples were. I honesty have no words.

I laughed far too much - tears of joy are an understatement.

I cried liked a baby for Faith and I wish I could show Jason the gates to hell.

Most of all? I was connected to the story as if it was real life. THAT'S how good this author is!!

Once my thoughts are all gathered together, or at least you know, they try to, a more detailed review will be up! Though I have no idea how i'll restrain myself from posting every single highlighted quote.. or book.. oops? lol

No time to breathe though - onto book 2 - ekkkkk

Breaking Faith Part 1 completely consumed me less than 24 hours ago. I only managed 4 hours of sleep as I stayed up until 3am devouring the book. The suspense of Faith's accumulation a whacked out admirers had me turning each page with anticipation to find out which would strike first. Kill's intentions remained a mystery throughout the book and wasn't confirmed until the sneak peak at the next book. I was on edge wondering if he was secretly only caring for her because of his past and felt sorry for her or if he truly was falling for her. It was like I was experiencing the same confusion as Faith. I love the relationships in this group. The girls are all so different, but Faith and Jessie can't seem to find the confidence in themselves as Amy must have which leads them in a tug of war between their insecurities and letting it go to find the true love that could be sitting in front of them on a platter. The guys of JackholeS are so protective of their family and it is so endearing as they progress in their career. I can't wait to read Part 2!

The opening of this story is the moment that Faith finally broke away from her abusive boyfriend, Jason. She's sitting outside a bar with a restraining order in her hand, at a true crossroads in life. The meager amount of belongings she managed to grab are stuffed in the trunk of her car and she has nowhere to stay that night. She's meeting some friends and hopes one of them will let her crash at their place, but she's covered in bruises and hasn't even shared her dark secret with them yet. The secret that Jason wasn't the perfect boyfriend. In fact, it was an illusion that was so twisted that even Jason believed he was the perfect boyfriend. But the reality of Faith's bruises, fractures, and scars prove the illusion a lie. And stepping into the bar to expose her bruises will be her first step into breaking that illusion to her friends.

This story gives a raw, unadulterated view into the mind of a young woman with low self-esteem who ignores many red flags and gets sucked into a relationship with an abusive man. This woman, like so many women in this situation, is intelligent and kind, but she has been a loner most of her life and has never dealt with a situation like this before. Her nature is so giving, she doesn't have practice with putting herself first. She has finally managed to break free, but she is not, in any way, whole.

The beginning of the story alternates between Faith's first days of freedom and flashbacks of her relationship, so you get a good idea of how truly twisted Jason's mind is. Physical abuse is never just physical. It's emotional and mind bending. Jason built a fairytale facade of their relationship that he shared with the world and he, in fact, wouldn't even allow himself to see the true reality of the relationship. Jason's sickness was so deep-rooted, he hid his abuse of Faith even from his own mind.

But this story isn't about Jason. This story is about Faith, broken and bruised, who steps through the door of Ray's bar and meets a new circle of friends, including the gorgeous Rock and Roll singer, Killian (Kill). This story is about how Faith starts to pull all the shattered pieces of herself together again, still tentatively glued in places, so full of holes if she were a vase, water would flow out of it like a sieve. But she does it, by sheer force of will. She doesn't even really believe she's worthy of love because of how terribly she has allowed herself to be treated by Jason, but slowly, she begins to remember that maybe she might be worth something.

Now this story isn't all dark drama. In fact, Faith has a sense of humor and has an ongoing monologue with her vagina who seems to have different opinions about the sexy Kill than her broken soul does. Part of Faith's healing is her insistence and success at denying her vagina its way because she knows she's not ready to delve into any sort of relationship until she has a better grasp of herself. Through the eyes of her new circle of friends and Kill, who actually adores her, she begins to shape a new and better self-image.

I recommend this story to contemporary romance lovers, lovers of truth, people who can quirk a smile in the face of great pain, and people who are brave enough to stand by the side of a not-so-perfect heroine and watch the sometimes agonizing and sometimes comedic process of her rebirth.

I totally loved this story. Great combination of heart in mouth moments and also laugh out loud moments.

Faith is running from her past. She's running from her ex to save her life. When fate introduces her to a local band her life is about to change in more ways than one. All the band members are protective of Faith. They will do anything to protect her. They are all alpha males. Kill has his eyes set on Faith. She's heard the stories of the main band members history with women. She doesn't want to get hurt so asks Kill to be friends. Will it work?

Great chemistry between these characters. I loved the conversations going on between them.

What an ending! I'd normally be screaming. However the author gave us chapter one of the next book so all is forgiven. Hope we don't have to wait too long for book two.

Brilliant debut novel.

Awesome story! When Faith finally found the courage to run fast and far away from Jason, her psycho, woman-beating boyfriend, she never expected that her safety net would be a bar named Ray's. There she meets a rock band, The JackholeS, and some really supportive people who protect her like she is family. Only one thing, Jason is not the only danger to Faith. *Warning- The story ends abruptly but if you search the end, the first chapter of the sequel is included!

Breaking Faith had me at my knees. The sexual tension throughout the book between Kill and Faith got me frustrated - but in a good way. It's an intense roller coaster of a story with a great cast, great plot and a gripping storyline. Job well done Joy! Cannot wait for the next Rocker Story!!! I need more KILLER!

OH EM GEE! I just finished one of the best books I have read all year!! It's hard to believe that Breaking Faith is Joy Eileen's debut novel because it sure doesn't read like it was written by a first time author, but an amazing, experienced one! OMG! I just cannot tell you how extraspectordinary this book or how I'm excited I am about it!! I loved it as much as I love chocolate - and let me tell you - I loooooove my chocolate!!

I absolutely loved Faith and I would definitely want her as my friend! I loved that despite Faith having been dealt a couple of really crap hands, she's not a bitter, negative, jaded person with a bad attitude. For sure, she has trust issues, but she's kind and warm and it's not hard to understand why almost everyone adores her. I don't always like everything she does, but I completely understand and couldn't really fault her for most of them. Faith is an amazing, strong heroine and I can't wait to see how much she grows before this tale is over!

Well, I love all of my JackholeS boys, but I especially love Mr. Moody or Kill, as most people call him! I love how protective he is of Faith and how in love with her he is, even if most of the characters refuse to see it. It's true that he was a manwhore before he met Faith and he can be a real jerk sometimes, but he's really wonderful! He's sweet, he pays attention, he's honest, playful, and funny. Kill totally stole my heart and I have a feeling that if we get his POV, I will love him even more!

Breaking Faith might only be the first part to this story, but that doesn't mean that it's one of those short 50 to 150 page books - it's not at all, in fact, it's a quite a good length novel. This was one of those books that I wanted to finish it and see where it would leave off, but at the same time, I never wanted to stop reading it because I didn't want to leave Faith or Killer. There was no part of me that wasn't invested in this story - I got angry, I laughed, I wanted to cry, I got a broken heart, and I also got a happy, melted one too. I more than thoroughly enjoyed Breaking Faith, it was truly magnificent, and I NEED Surviving Faith like NOW!

Breaking Faith is only told from Faith's POV and it does end in a cliffhanger, but there is a preview of the next book which I highly recommend reading because even though you'll still want to keep reading on, it should ease your mind about where Breaking Faith leaves off!

Five stars!

I loved this book, the interactions between the guys and the girls amongst each other was really great, just like friends are supposed to be. Also, the relationship between killian and Faith is funny and loving at the same time. However, I wish I had Killian's point of view throughout the book too, and it didn't end on a cliffhanger. Still going to read the next one!

I loved this book! It's not a fluffy rockstar romance. It's about a girl fighting to escape her past and find out who she is. Faith is broken and there is a long road ahead of her but she finds strength and family with a band of misfits. There is a cliffie but the second book is already written :-)

This was an amazing book. It grabs you from the beginning to the end. Faith comes to realize that she is living in a relationship where she has to leave before she is killed at the hands of the one that claims to love her, Jason.
She meets the Jackholes, a band that plays at Rays, while with her friends from school while hanging out at Rays. When she meets the year everyone wants to be Faith’s protector when they find out about Jason. Faith then moves in with the band because she has left Jason and has no where to live. Killian, aka; Kill has an instant attraction to Faith and they become friends. Faith is growing to depend on Kill. She trust him.
It seems every guy that meets or sees Faith has some type of an attraction to her, they have to have her.
This is definitely a page turner and will keep you wanting more. I am already starting book two, because I need to know what happens next.
I recommend this as a must read. It’s full of drama, romance and it deals with the reality about domestic violence. Great job Joy Eileen.

This book was just super boring. It's also a slow burn, cliffhanger. 424 pages and the two MC's don't ever even kiss. They do flirt and they do have a super weird insta-unrequited-love relaionship with a bunch of keep-us-apart-misunderstandings-or-assumptions but it's all superficial. He barely knows her, she has no clue about him and can't even figure out context clues in his songs. She is very annoying to me. Worse, her friends are superficial and annoying as well.

Oh! Basically every man she meets becomes meanly obsessed with her and every non-friend woman in this book is jealous of her and mean to her over it. Everywhere she goes with Hunky Singer Man, the women are impossibly catty and backstabby. I couldn't roll my eyes harder. No thanks.

I'm not going to go to the next book.

I was given a copy of this book to review by Voracious readers. Talk about a book hangover!!

There are some definite dark moments in this book as Faith relives her past with Jason. Joy did an amazing job of writing humour into the story to help relieve those tense moments.

I could not put this book down. I needed to know what was going to happen to these two. Would Faith finally see Kill for who he was and not who she hears he was? Even the sub characters drew you in and made you want to understand more about their lives

I cannot wait to read the next book to find out what happens with Faith and Kill as well as Jesse and Van and the rest of the band

Who does not love a hot Rocker? This book had me from Chapter 1. Faith is on the run from an abusive ex boyfriend that is just beyond creepy and a tad crazy. She meets a group of rockers a about to hit the big time. Thus begins a friendship between Faith and Killer. I absolutely loved Kill. He was the most caring friend, and really had patience for Faith. I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

Holy Crap Batman!

First time I read a Joy Eileen book and definitely not the last. This book cannot be described in words how I felt. Everything that happened to Faith broke my heart. And her chemistry with all the Jackholes made me feel apart of the family. Each person brought a uniqueness to the story and I can't wait to find out what happens for the rest of Faith's new journey.

Fantastic series!

I did enjoy the overall concept of this book but I felt like it was lacking substance. Throughout the whole book there were a lot of words that were overused for example when faith kept saying “my vagina”. This book also kept going in circles with the relationship between Faith and Kill. Overall I would say this book is ok but it was not great.

There is so much to love about Breaking Faith, I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book. The biggest compliment I can give this author is that she hooked me, pretty much from the start . . . she also frustrated the hell out of me. You know you’ve written a great book when you can evoke emotions from your readers, to the point they want to reach into the pages and strangle the characters for their decisions/actions.

Faith is an interesting character, to the point I found her to be believable and totally adorable. She’s suffered an abusive relationship, one that she finds the strength to leave, setting up the story so that we immediately root for Faith and her continued fight for independence. I, for one, desperately wanted Faith to quit depreciating herself to the point of destruction. She struggles with her self-worth throughout the entire book but I do see subtle changes in her as she gains strength with the help of her “new family”. Obviously, this is only the first part of the series, so I look forward to more growth to come here!

The JackholeS! I still don’t understand why the “S” is capitalized. I think I may have missed something, but it doesn’t even matter. Eileen knows how to develop characters. I want to be friends with this entire group, especially Kill . . . as long as that “friendship” is defined the same way Faith and Kill define it. For me, there’s nothing better than the “exception to the rule” relationship. Kill is the ultimate bad boy, rocker. He’s hot, has a dirty mouth, and all the ladies want him . . . but he just wants Faith. As frustrating as the relationship can get between Faith and Kill, it’s so much fun to read!

There are so many memorable moments, my favorite being much of the clever dialogue woven throughout the story. Jet and his cocky one-liners every time he busted into the bar had me chuckling every time. Kill and Faith’s banter was great. Even some of the sideline drama was intriguing, and again, I’m looking forward for more.

Breaking Faith ends at a cliffhanger but luckily we don’t have to wait too much longer for the next one!!! And we are awarded with a sneak peek into the second book of the series, Surviving Faith. Can’t wait!

Highly recommend to readers of New Adult, Rocker Romances, Contemporary Romances, and Romantic Comedies.

Fantastic read, absolutely loaded with sexual tension, affection, friendship, and humour, as well as touching on the darker side of some relationships.

Faith finally reaches breaking point and finds the courage to leave her abusive fiancé, seeking refuge in a bar with her best friends, where she meets a local band, the JackholeS, who immediately stand up for her when her ex comes looking for her. She ends up leaving the bar with a new job, a new ‘family’, and a new place to live.

One member of the band, in particular, sends a jolt of awareness through her, but she is wary of getting involved with someone so soon after escaping her previous relationship, as well as the fact that he is a known womaniser.

Kill wants Faith from the moment he sees her but restrains himself from pushing her into something more than friendship. She makes him want to change and his behaviour towards her tells the reader that he definitely wants more than one night with her.

Throughout the novel, they both do their damnedest to keep to their ‘just friends’ policy, but the lines gets a little blurred with a few lapses in their behaviour. It makes for a very charged atmosphere between them!

I loved this story! I loved the characters – Faith’s two best girlfriends, the band, and the bar staff. I enjoyed this author’s style and, honestly, cannot wait for the follow up book. I need it soon!!!

I received a free copy of this book through the GoodReads First Reads giveaways.

I enjoyed Breaking Faith by Joy Eileen. I felt this book was a light hearted read even though it also carried deeper and powerful messages: that one needs to be true to oneself, that everyone has value and no one should take that knowledge away from you. I believe the book was well balanced in these aspects. I enjoyed the banter and playfulness between Faith and Kill. I did get quite annoyed with all of the men falling at Faith’s feet, but that’s another story….you would think that there were no other women around for these men to fawn at. However, perhaps the author was trying to make a point at how Faith is “worth” more than she thought and by having these men attracted to her, it was a way to portray this. I did feel that the book was a tad long and I was getting ready for another Jason and Faith confrontation and I was disappointed when this did not occur. I guess now I will have to read the second book to find out if that confrontation ever takes place. I hope this book gives at least one reader, who may be in an abusive relationship, the strength to walk away from it and to take one’s life back because no one should have to go through what Faith went through.
