About the author

Cynthia Rutledge started writing after taking a class at a local community college. But her interest in the written word started years earlier when she was in her teens. At sixteen she wrote in her diary, "I don't know what I would do if I couldn't be a writer."

It took Cindy years to return to her first love---writing. Unlike some writers, Cindy wasn't interested in shorter works of fiction. She jumped feet first into book length fiction. She loves reading and writing romance because she believes in the power of love and in happily ever after. An incurable romantic, Cindy loves seeing her characters grow and learn from their mistakes and, in the process, achieve a happy ending.

Cindy hopes that once you read her books you'll be able to tell she is an eternal optimist, one who truly believes in the power of love. She invites you to kick off your shoes, pick up one of her books and get to know her.

I love sweet stories with family and kids and finding love in unexpected places. Lori has plans that don't include a ready-made family, but she can't help loving widower Drew's daughters. Drew is still grieving his wife's death a couple years ago, but there's just something about Lori that attracts him. There are obstacles, including Drew's teenage daughter who doesn't want her father involved with anyone, and they slowly work through them. Lori's work as an advice columnist for a teen magazine adds a bit of fun with the questions and answers. It's heart-warming and satisfying.

Normally I love Love Inspired books by Harlequin but this one was a miss for me.

The romance seemed a little...I don't know how to put it...unrealistic, maybe? For one, I'm not that fond of young women falling in love and marrying older men but that's a personal opinion of mine. I also didn't like Nicole's attitude toward Lori even though I completely understood her situation.

But the real put me off of this story was the sexual content. Now, I know the Love Inspired series doesn't allow sex scenes...which I will be forever grateful for...but this book came dangerously close to crossing that line.

My verdict is that this book was simply okay and recommended for ages 13 and up.

“When You Came Along” by Cindy Kirk is a love story about a young woman who wants to find her forever love and a man who wants to have a second chance at love. This book is part of the Seriously Sweet St. Louis series. Lorelei Loveland moves to St. Louis for a temporary position as nanny to Nicole and Molly. She also writes a column for American Teen Magazine as “Lorelei Love”. Drew McCashlin is a very busy and successful businessman who tragically lost his wife two years ago and needs help with the care of his two daughters. His son is married to Lori’s good friend. So, this is how Lori found out about the Nanny position and moved away from home to take this temporary job.

Nicole, as a 16 year old, is not happy about having a Nanny. She feels that Lori is a predator that has her sights on her rich employer. Although both Lori and Drew are seeing other people, they feel this attraction and chemistry toward each other that they try to ignore and deny. This is a relationship that seems doomed. They have much to consider. Drew, who had the wife he loved taken too soon and he has three children. He is 43 and Lori is 30. The oldest daughter wants Lori gone and makes life miserable for her. Molly was in the accident that killed her mother and since the accident, she has not spoken. Unlike her older sister, she warms to Lori and enjoys having Lori care for her and they become close.

Life often takes us down paths that we never anticipated. I loved reading how Lori opens herself to new possibilities. The romance was heart melting and I loved the HEA. This story was an enjoyable read and a really nice summer escape.

When You Came Along is Book 7 in the Seriously Sweet St Louise books & can be read on its own but would definitely help to read Make Room for Love (Book 6) first as the characters follow on.

This book tells the story of Lori & Drew. Lori is Kaitlyn's best friend from Book 6 & Drew is Andrew McCashlin, Clay's father & owner of McCashlin Enterprises. Much like the previous book, this book also grabbed me from page one & was completed in a day as well.

Lori worked in the office with Kaitlyn at McCashlin Enterprises but has left there to take on a temporary nanny job for Drew's two daughters as well as write her teen advice column. Drew & his wife had Clay when they were teenagers hence Clay's sisters being much younger than Clay. Drew is now a widower as his wife died two years ago in a car accident. Due to working so much, Drew has hired Lori to help look after the girls over the summer. Nicole is 16 & claims she doesn't need a nanny. Molly is 7 & although previously an outgoing child, hasn't spoken since the accident with her mother.

Lori & Drew are instantly drawn to each other but as they are dating other people, don't act on their feelings until later in the book. Nicole tries to sabotage any relationship that might be happening whereas Molly flourishes with Lori & even begins to talk.

Will Lori & Drew get their HEA despite several obstacles? You'll have to read the book to fins out but I can assure you that you won't be disappointed!

This novella is the 7th book in the Seriously Sweet St Louis series and follows the story of Lori and Drew. Despite the age difference of around 13 years the attraction was there from the moment they met. Lori had agreed to be a nanny for Drew’s younger children for six months to earn some extra money to supplement her income from being a agony aunt for a teen magazine. Really enjoyed the extracts incorporated into the book from the agony aunt column. Lori having bought up her younger siblings was looking forward to a child free life following her stint as a nanny and Drew having lost his wife two years earlier was not looking to replace her. Falling in love with each other, neither one could admit it so both thought their love was unrequited. Throw in Drew’s daughters, a seven year old who falls in love with Lori and a sixteen year old who sees Lori as a threat and does her best to get rid her and the relationship looks doomed to never get off the ground. I loved that the oldest daughter Nicole confided in Lori’s alter ego agony aunt and they spent time communicating with each other without realising who each other was. Definitely recommend reading this HEA story.

A Return to Hot Cocoa in St. Louis

For the 7th and final book in the Seriously Sweet St. Louis series we return to St. Louis and few characters even make surprise appearances.

Drew has always been known as a shrewd businessman, but is it time for that to change? One thing that this book will make you do, is think about important family events that you may have missed for a job & reevaluate your work/life balance. Take a second look and give your life a real try.

Lori who we met in the previous book, takes a job as a nanny for Drew. She is also an advice columnist for American Teen magazine.

Talk about a book that brings you back to your troubled high school years and wondering what you should do about them! This might just be my favorite love/hate book yet of Cindy's (and I’ve never thought that about a single book of hers) for simple fact that it can relate to both a teen and an adult. I grew up reading Seventeen Magazine, Teen Vogue, Teen Bop and the like and this book really took me back to those teenage angsty trouble days BUT without so much angst (which is nice).

True to Cindy form, this is a good-hearted Christian romance to believe in.

When You Came Along is seventh in the Seriously Sweet St Louis series but can be read as a stand alone story but I highly recommend reading Make Room for Love which is the sixth. This is Lori and Drew's story of finding the right person in the right time. Lori helped raise her siblings after her father died and her mother had to go to work, and now that they are grown she can live her life as she sees fit. She takes a temporary nanny job to help her finances but when she meets the family, she realizes that they are the family she always wanted. Drew McCashlin needs a nanny for his two daughters and hires Lori on the recommendation of his son Clay, who happens to be friends with Lori. Drew expected an older, grandmother type of nanny but when he meets Lori he realizes she is perfect for the job and his family. The story that follows is filled with a little bit of angst, a little bit of wonder and a beautifully sweet love story with amazing characters. This is a story that you won't want to put down but also one that you won't want to see end.

When Lori moves to St. Louis to start as a nanny to her friend Kaitlyn's father in law, Lori does not expect to find love. Drew is older and widowed with two daughters still at home. His oldest daughter, Nicole, is a teenager still trying to find her way and his youngest, Molly, has not spoken since her mother was killed in a car crash.

Nicole is against this romance, but Lori and Drew find themselves drawn to each other. Lori tries to help the girls, who are still grieving the loss of their mother. She tries to be a friend to them and be a mother figure, but not their mom. Lori and Drew do fall in love, but must figure out how to help his girls and their expectations to make this romance and family work.

A great story by Ms. Kirk. While reading the book, you want to root for happy endings for each of the characters. It is a great conclusion to her previous Seriously Sweet St. Louis book, which introduces us to Drew, Lori and Kaitlyn.

Lori is best friends with Kaitlyn who is with Clay. Drew is Clay's father, and hires Lori as a nanny for his two other children, daughters, 7 year old Molly and 16 year old Nicole. Their Mother passed 2 years ago in a car accident. Molly was with her but unharmed, she hasn't talked since the accident. Nicole is jealous of Lori, she tries to sabotage them. She overhears a conversation Lori had with Tom, a man she was seeing. It was a misunderstanding, than Lori tries to fix. Nicole tells her Grandma, her Mom's Mom her worries, and Grandma agrees to find out what is realloy going on. Lori is Lorelei Loveland, she writes a teen q and a column. Nicole writes her, and Lorelei answers back, they email back and forth. At the end of the book Nicole finds out Lori is Lorelei. She realizes that she has misjudged Lori this entire time.
Drew and Lori say 3 important words to each other, and Lori answers an important question with a yes, after the girls give their blessing.

I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher and am voluntarily reviewing it. When You Came Along is a story of finding love in all the wrong places. Lori was just looking for a short term job as she continued to develop her teen advice column. Taking a job as a nanny for six months was just a stop to having control over her life, after helping to raise her younger siblings. What she didn’t count for was an instant attraction to her employer! Even more, was that the attraction was reciprocated. Whilst I was not super keen on the dad falling in the love with the nanny storyline, I did appreciate how Ms. Kirk kept their relationship appropriate around the children, how Lori helped the youngest daughter to open up, and how the advice column assisted with the eldest daughter to see things in a new light. I enjoyed the story of Drew and Lori and wished the novella to continue following the end of the book. If you’re looking for a book where love finds you even when you’re not looking, than be sure to pick up this story.

Lori needs a new way of life, after helping raise her siblings she decides she needs to start HER life. When Clay (Kaitlyns new husband) recommends her as a nanny to his father. Lori decides to move to St Louis to help him with Clay's 2 sisters. What she doesn't know, shocks her once she meets Drew, she always thought of him as an older gentleman, one who isn't this sexy, slightly older man.

Can Lori resist his confused advances?

Drew needs help with is 2 young daughters, his wife died 2 years previously and his youngest doesn't speak due to the shock of the accident. His eldest daughter is a typical teenager. So when Lori arrives his eldest is shocked that there is "something " going on between her father and Lori. But she doesn't exactly know the extent of their feeling.

Find out how love can confuse your "set in stone" future plans and helps changed your heart. We may lose a loved one but as the saying says, "the heart wants what the heart wants".

This book honestly was seriously sweet. I'm not sure how much older Drew was than Lori, but they seemed to have an instant connection.

Neither of the people Drew and Lori were dating (Susan and Tom) were very pleasant people. Susan seemed mean spirited, and Tom was creepy. Tom seemed especially creepy to me, especially after the way he behaving when they ran into Nicole.

Nicole was the typical teenage obstacle in a parent's potential new relationship. She never seemed to be able to talk to her father, but I guess that's a teenage thing.

I think it's interesting how faith is interspersed throughout the book, but it is never shoved down a reader's throat.

This is a quick read about second chances. A second chance romance for Drew, as well as a second chance at life for Lori. All ending in a sweet HEA. A 3.5 star read.

It’s been said if you want to make God laugh, tell him YOUR plans. For us humans, it’s always a hard lesson to learn that His plans are always best, we just need to trust. Lori Loveland, aka Lorelei Love to the teens who follow her column, thought she had it all figured out: Drew, Clay’s dad, only needed a nanny for his wo younger girls for six months. Six months, earn a nice salary, then on to bigger and better things. What she hadn’t planned on was her attraction to the younger-than-she-thought employer and her growing love for him and his girls the longer she stayed. Sometimes God really does know best when he brings together two people who need each other more than they realize and need him even more. Sit back, relax, and enjoy this very heartwarming story; you won’t be disappointed!

My initial thought when I began this book was that I had read a similar story about a nanny and the attraction to her employer. This story took shape and a life of its own. I absolutely love a second chance love story and to add the complexity of Drew losing his wife, with Lori inserted to assist in caring for his 2 daughters really added depth to the story. I realized when Molly was mentioned as not speaking for 2 years that she probably needed a connection with a female that could love her similarly to the love she received from her Mother. I’m so glad the book ending positively for Molly. The connection with Nicole writing Lorelei Love was also a nice touch and I enjoyed that plot. What a job… being an advise columnist to teens! Really enjoyed this book and would love to see more storyline on these characters.

Widower Drew McCashin needs a nanny for his two daughters 16 year old Nicole and Molly who hasn't spoken since her mother's death 2 years ago. Drew's son Clay (who we met in Make Room for Love) recommended he hire Lorelei Loveland, a friend of Clay's wife. Lori (aka Lorelei Love) needs a short term job until her Teen Advice column really takes off. Lori knows all about children as she had to help raise her siblings when their father died. Now that they are grown she has decided she doesn't want children. Whilst neither Drew or Lori are looking for a relationship, their attraction is instant. But 16 year old Nicole has other plans.......will their love conquer all? This is another clean romance which I loved! I was rooting for Drew and Lori and.....I wasn't disappointed.

I had an Advanced Reader copy of this book. This book was truly delightful. Like the other Seriously Sweet books they can stand on their own, but they are much better when you have read them all, especially Number 6, Make Room for Love. I accidentally started reading this one before that one and stopped so I could understand the story a bit better.

Drew and Lori make a very nice couple, even if she is the temporary nanny. You will fall in love with both Drew and Lori. The girls Nicole and Molly are typical girls, especially Nicole who is a teenager.

Like I have said previously, I enjoy this series, because I like St. Louis and can relate to the places talked about and also I like the subtle Christian theme in the books.

You will enjoy this book, it was a great read for a rainy Saturday.

A very lovely quick read about finding love a second time around and love where you least expect it.
Lori Loveland(who we met in book 6) has come to take a nanny position with the McCashlin family. Both hero and heroine was intrigued by their first meeting not expecting the visual of each other. Lori has signed on to be Drew children temporary nanny. We find out he has two daughters one in high school and one in elementary who has stopped talking since her mother has passed away. During several events both Drew and Lori find themselves drawn to each although both felt the other would not be interested. As time goes back and Lori get's closer to his girls and to him he realizes she might be his second love after mourning his wife for several years. Was giving an arc by the author for an honest review.

The Seriously Sweet St. Louis series is exactly that...seriously sweet, and this installment doesn't disappoint.

We have Lori and Drew, two people who think they know exactly what they want (or don't want) in a life parenter and for their future. I loved the overall theme of what you *think* you want, isn't what is always what you need.

Drew is a widow with 3 children. The middle and youngest daughters each had trauma they were working through, and I loved watching them grow and overcome what was holding them back.

Lori had to grow up fast and was looking to live for herself and have nothing hold her back. I loved watching her learn that being her own person doesn't mean you have to be alone.

Lori gets her man!!!

Lori gets her man!!! This is about Lori and Drew. Lori as we met her in Make Room for Love is a writer or advisor, but she is one to look for change and want to live a little. She is young but not too young, so she thinks this is her time to shine. Drew is Clay’s dad although he is not that old as he married very young and had three kids from his first marriage until his wife died in a car accident. He has two daughters at home and a teen, Nicole, and a little one around 6-7 years old, Molly. Molly does not talk but when she does, it is great! This is a heart-warming book where a teen learns to trust and a small child fills the hole in her heart! The only thing I desired from this book was an epilogue – what happened in a couple of years – was there a big wedding, more children, etc….

If you have read "Make Room for Love" and loved Lori like I did, you are going to LOVE "When You Came Along." This story picks up shortly after Kaitlyn leaves Shelby and Lori wants to leave as well. Just like Kaitlyn, Lori dreams of a place bigger than Shelby and the plant. When Kaitlyn tells her that Clay's dad is looking for a nanny, she realizes this is a perfect fit for her. Lori loves kids and practically raised her siblings. Lori is also looking for a job that will allow her to continue her work writing as a teen advice column. Doesn't hurt that this job is going to give her a place to live and pay her.
Drew McCashlin made his two daughters his life after his wife was killed in a car accident. He doesn't have time for real love or a relationship. He has girlfriend, but she is mostly there for events and a plus one when needed. Drew doesn't see love in his future. He had his one true love and God took her. Drew and his daughters are grieving. His youngest daughter, Molly, doesn't speak. His older daughter Nicole seems like she is okay, but she is a teen without her mom when she needs her most.
When Drew decides to hire another nanny, Nicole is not happy. She doesn't need a nanny and doesn't want any other woman in her house.
Lori and Drew can feel the sparks right away. They try to ignore them, but seem to pulled together the hard they try to stay a part. Nicole over hears Lori joking about having a fling with her dad and freaks out. I can totally relate to this. My dad passed away when I was 14 and I made my mom's dating life almost impossible. While Nicole might be a bit over the top she is very well developed as a character and feels so real to me.
Can Drew and Lori over come what seems like insurmountable obstacles? Is it true love or just a fling? Can Drew find a way to forgive God and see that he is still able to love and be loved?
I would say taking take a change on "When you came along" and enjoy a lovely written story with all the feels. And of course if you want to see a bit more of Kaitlyn and Clay and maybe a few other of our St Louis friends keep a keen eye out, you never know who you might run into. While this book dove takes into the other books it can also be read as a stand alone book, which is nice.

Lori Loveland needed a change in her life. She helped raise her family after her dad died and her mom had to work so they could survive. Now she doesn't want to do it again. A job offer as a nanny comes up and it's an offer she can't refuse if she want to start a new life in a new city.

When Drew McCashlin needs a new nanny for his two daughters, Clay suggests Lori. Drew had no idea that she wasn't a matronly older lady, but in fact was a beautiful young woman. His attraction for her is instantaneous, but because she works for him, and he's so much older than she is, he wants to keep his distance.

Would age and the children be enough to keep them apart?

Although it could be read as as a standalone, I recommend reading Make Room for Love (book 6) first - this is where we are first introduced to both of this stories main characters. As with all books in this series, it is a quick clean read. The overall theme is finding love a second time around and love where you least expect it. The story is filled with a little bit of angst, a little bit of wonder, and a beautifully sweet love story with amazing characters. This is a story that you won't want to put down but also one that you won't want to see end so quickly.

Lori needs a short term gig to tide her over until her Teen Advice column takes off. Lori had to help raise her siblings when her father died, so she doesn’t want to get involved with anyone with children. Neither Drew or Lori are looking for a relationship, but of course, they cannot fight their attraction to each other. This is a nice, clean, Christian based romance. Lori takes a temporary nanny job to help her transition moving to St. Louis. The children's mother died a few years ago, and Lori is very competent since she raised her siblings. But of course they have issues - Nicole is a teenager - which is hard at any time, and Molly hasn't spoken since her mother died. The children also have a sexy father, who needs to learn more how to relate to and help his kids.

I really enjoyed watching Drew and Lori's relationship develop, but I especially enjoyed seeing the children and how Lori helped them. This was a sweet romance and stands well by itself.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher but I am reviewing it voluntarily. This is the story of Lori and Drew. Lori needed a new surrounding and got a job as Drew’s nanny in St. Louis. Just the fresh start she was looking for. What she wasn’t looking for was a husband and being tied down.

Drew is a successful business man older than Lori by several years and has two children. A teenage daughter and a younger daughter. Busy with work he sometimes looses sight of what’s most important. Family.

Lori helps Drew see what is important and in the process they develop feelings for each other. There is a twist in this story too but I won’t spoil it for you.

Another great story by Cindy Kirk. I really enjoyed this book. It is a clean romance with a focus on God and family. Restoring ones faith and healing from grief.

I think what I really liked about this book was how Cindy dealt with the age gap between the two lead characters. I've read a lot of age gap books and it's not really addressed or it's pushed to the extreme. In this book, they focused more on how the age gap didn't matter as much because of the friendship and what they built. I enjoyed seeing how the relationship grew between the characters as well as the children in the book and liked how there was a conflict in that area. It was nice to see it connected to the previous book as well. Another great read from Cindy Kirk.

I have a soft spot for stories with children and enjoy it even more when there are teenagers.

I enjoyed getting to know Lori better and also liked the other characters. The story development was pretty good and while I had an idea about some of the things that would happen, the author did a good job at writing those things in unexpected places in the book to still manage to surprise me.

The resolution was different from the author's usual style but I enjoyed it nonetheless and was left satisfied with how the book ended.

If you read this book, you will understand why Cindy Kirk is my favorite contemporary romance author. I loved the characters so much, I felt invested in the happenings of the story so much that I was upset when the story ended. But, Ms. Kirk is also an artist, creating pictures of what the world should be like: People helping people, and having a community spirit with love conquering all. Thank you, Ms. Kirk! I can't wait to read the next one. I received an advanced reader's copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Such a great love story!
I’m so glad to be given the insight for Lori! After coming to know her in “Make Room For Love.”
Watching Lori come into her own, growing, stepping out of her comfort zone, realizing what she wanted in life wasn’t actually what she wanted after all.
Caring for two girls as a nanny, writing her column advise, falling for her employer...what else could we throw in?!
Very interesting dynamics and insight were given the whole way through.
