Oud maar niet verouderd: Een inleiding tot de studie van het Oude Testament

Zowel in het jodendom, het christendom als de islam speelt het Oude Testament een centrale rol. Tegen deze achtergrond behandelt dit boek de belangrijkste kwesties die betrekking hebben op een adequate interpretatie ervan.Het eerste deel onderzoekt de oorsprong van de term ‘Oude Testament’ en belicht waarom sommige boeken er wel deel van uitmaken, terwijl andere geschriften te licht werden bevonden. In het tweede deel maakt de lezer kennis met het ‘land van de bijbel’. Daarnaast komt de heikele kwestie van de historiciteit van de oudtestamentische verhalen uitgebreid aan bod. Hebben Abraham of Mozes echt bestaan of zijn ze slechts personages in fraaie verhalen? Het derde deel bespreekt de geschiedenis van de interpretatie van het Oude Testament in het joden- en christendom. Tot slot wordt aandacht besteed aan het actuele veelvoud van benaderingen van de oudtestamentische literatuur.

[Sense of History]

This is the written text in Dutch of an academic course at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. It offers an introduction to the context and redaction history of the Old Testament, with the emphasis, of course, on the Hebrew Bible. What interested me most here is the position Hans Ausloos takes in the ongoing discussion about the historical value of the biblical texts. This is a fierce debate, roughly between minimalists, who are very skeptical and argue that these texts are hardly useful for finding out what really happened, and maximalists who emphasize the historical core of the biblical stories and believe that everything that cannot be unequivocally refuted by archaeology and the study of non-biblical texts is by definition plausible or even true.

In his treatment of the subject, Ausloos seems to take an intermediate position: “everything that is told in the Old Testament can in principle be historically reliable, but these are texts that are primarily literary creations with a religious intention.” At first glance, this seems arguable, but if you read this study, it turns out that there is little that is really useful in the Bible about the earliest history of Ancient Israel. Of course, this differs from book to book. In his final chapter, Ausloos also keeps the church in the middle (pun intended): “a balanced and complementary approach to the text takes the final text seriously (synchronously), but does not lose sight of the fact that this concerns a developed text with its own history of origin and historical context (diachronically), which also influenced the final meaning to a considerable extent.” I am of course in favor of caution and nuance, but this position seems so vague to me that it does not really contribute much.
Disclaimer: This review is only about the Bible as a historical source, not about the theological value of the texts; these are two very different things.

Dit boek biedt wat de ondertitel suggereert: een inleiding tot de studie van het Oude Testament. Hans Ausloos, prof aan de Franstalige Université catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve, overloopt de belangrijkste aspecten, zoals de (vermoedelijke) geschiedenis van het vroege Israël, de opbouw en redactiegeschiedenis van de Hebreeuwse Bijbel en andere geschriften, en vervolgens de kritische studie ervan. Dit is grondig en degelijk, erg informatief, maar ook wel een beetje academisch. Het boek is intussen bijna 20 jaar oud, weliswaar regelmatig herdrukt, maar ik heb de indruk dat de tekst niet meer bijgewerkt is, alvast niet de literatuurlijst.
