Burning Proof picks up almost where Drawing Fire left off and, while it’s not quite as action-packed as its predecessor, there are still plenty of edge-of-your-seat moments! Both cold cases are riveting – the current one that Luke and Woody are researching for beautiful blogger Faye (woeful sigh) and the ongoing arc of the murder of Abby’s parents’ and Luke’s uncle. The latter case keeps gaining new layers to peel back, new aspects to investigate, and a stunning development or five that I thought were really well done. Cantore’s history as a law enforcement officer is reflected in the plot construction, the characters, the action, and the procedures. All of these elements combine to make a really entertaining suspense read. The high-stakes action is so well-crafted that it often feels as though you’re watching it all play out on the TNT channel instead of on the page in front of you.

The message of faith is the novel’s foundation, and “foundation” plays a key role in that message. The author weaves the faith threads naturally throughout the story, and it provides a reprieve of peace from the tension and suspense. Themes of trusting God’s justice and finding the solid foundation He’s given you are sure to resonate with readers at many different stages of faith.

Overall, Burning Proof is entertaining, well-written, suspenseful, and intriguing. It will also twist your heart if you’re prone to attach yourself to romantic pairings, and it will leave you waiting eagerly for the next book in the series!

Abby’s faith and confidence are shaken when flashbacks and nightmares plague her after she faces a devastating incident. The turmoil and anxiety produce a more authentic character. Abby struggles as she reexamines the very foundation of her faith and her career. Her introspection and soul-searching reveal a deeply vulnerable side of her personality.

Luke continues investigating the cold case that intertwines his life and career with Abby’s. He reluctantly withholds new information in an effort to protect her from false hope. Luke has good intentions but he knows better than to pull that stunt on a gal like Abby! The intense investigations and new revelations in the murder of Abby’s parents and Luke’s uncle kept me on the edge of my seat. Emotional and spiritual elements anchor this series and keep me coming back for more!

I requested the opportunity to read and review this book through The Book Club Network. The opinions expressed are my own.

BURNING PROOF is book two in the Cold Case Justice series and another winner from Janice Cantore.

Detective Abby Hart is devastated when her latest case ends tragically. Taking a leave of absence, she spends time with her fiancée, doing what he loves, hoping his passion will become hers. Instead, Abby finds herself struggling with the relationship. With extra time on her hands and needing a distraction, she gets involved with a case Luke Murphy is working on. Abby knows she shouldn’t spend more time with Luke but wants to do something useful, especially if she can help the girl involved.

Private Investigator, Luke Murphy is haunted by Asa Foster’s dying words. Asa is Abby’s previous partner and whispers to Luke, “There is proof.” Knowing Asa is talking about the Triple Seven fire that took Abby’s parents and Luke’s uncle, he’s afraid to share the information with Abby because she’s already dealing with so much. He keeps the evidence from her and does some investigating of his own. In the meantime, he and his partner Woody, also a friend of Abby’s, works on a ten-year-old child abduction case. Feeling Abby will be better able to help the girl involved, Luke asks for her help, even as he tries to ignore his attraction to her. As the case winds down, new evidence in the Triple Seven fire is uncovered.

BURNING PROOF picks up where DRAWING FIRE leaves off. Even though Abby tries to put the Triple Seven fire and the death of her parents behind her, she can’t. It will always be in the back of her mind until she finds out the truth. She questions her feelings for both her fiancée and for Luke, while Luke tries to move on. Ms. Cantore does a superb job of building the suspense in this series. Even though the reader knows more than the characters, we still don’t know the conclusion. Hopefully, CATCHING HEAT, the third book in the series, will hold all the answers.

Burning Proof was a great follow-up to Drawing Fire! It continued the story of finding out what really happened when Abby's parents were murdered and who the guilty party was. While this book did answer some questions, it also left me wondering about other things and anticipating the next installment!

The story had several different subplots going at once, but in the end they all kind of fit together and made the story interesting. I did get a little confused when the POV would change to someone new in the beginning, but after reading more I got how everything connected.

I loved how the relationship between Abby and Luke is progressing, although the ending has me anxious to read the next book, just because I'm not sure how everything will turn out.

All in all, a great read. I really liked it and if you enjoy mysteries, especially dealing with cold cases, I recommend Burning Proof. I think you need to read book one first, as this continues the story.

Burning Proof is the second book in the Cold Case Justice series. I loved the first book and the second book did not disappoint. Janice Cantore has a way of bringing the characters into your heart. Abby and Luke continue to try to solve the 27 year old cold case in which her parents and Luke's Uncle were murdered and also another cold case as well. Many twists throughout the book that will keep you literally on the edge of your seat. Cantore also includes spiritually and faith struggles in her characters, as Molly asked Abby; ...Why has He deserted me? Why doesn't He care? These characters will get down where you live and make you examine your own self.

There is a third book in the series coming in September 2016. I can hardly wait to see how everything works out. I won this book in a drawing with no requirement for a review. All views stated are my own.

Non-stop action, case drama, clues and twists provide the perfect suspense for this utterly addictive book. With hints of romance and a solid basis in faith, this second book in the Cold Case Justice series continues all the excitement from book one with likeable characters and heart-wrenching cases.

With the cold case of the Triple Seven fire and murders having settled down somewhat, Detective Abby Hart has continued with other investigations, most recently the homicide of a young girl. But when the arrest goes horribly wrong Abby starts to question her future in the police force. Luke Murphy is continuing to solve cases in his PI business but can't help following up the words Asa said before he died 'there is proof'. When both new cases and cold cases throw up new clues and complications, Abby and Luke find themselves working together and unraveling more of the mystery around the fire that killed their family members.

The prologue helps to reorientate the reader, picking up where book one left off with the chasing of clues to the governor's door where Gavin Kent kills himself before he can give a complete confession about his role in the Triple Seven restaurant fire that killed Abby Hart's parents and Luke Murphy's uncle. It didn't take me long to remember what had transpired in Drawing Fire and get my head around the continuing story. This is the second book in the series, and so readers should start with book one as the storyline is continuous.

The crimes and case work is the focus of this book, and it's certainly non-stop. It feels both realistic and exciting. This is one part of a series-long investigation of a cold-case, with a fair bit of action in between. There are a variety of cases investigated, from the Triple Seven fire, active cases and other cold cases. I enjoyed the mix of high-tension action and good old crime-fighting leg work. There is one seriously creepy perp who I couldn't wait to see get arrested. Janice Cantore certainly knows what she is writing about and it makes for a very believable story. The last quarter really amps up the action and suspense, and everything gets a bit more complicated when the cases become entwined.

Faith is a fundamental aspect in the story, providing a nice background to the harsh reality of police work. While there are little hints of romance, it's not a focus of the book. When the book starts, Abby is still engaged to Ethan and plans to ignore any feelings she may have for Luke. And by the end, I have to admit, that not a whole lot has changed. However, it's nice to have a book that takes its time with the romance. I think I know what the final outcome will be, but it's enjoyable to see the characters take each step seriously and not rush into anything. On the other hand, I did think certain characters were a bit slow on the uptake regarding their love lives, and I have to admit to wanting to sort it all out NOW for them. It will be great to see what happens in the next book.

The end of the book supplies a nice set of answers, some of which Abby and Luke have been desperately wanting regarding the Triple Seven case. But there is stil more work to do, and the events are set up to provide a great third book, with plenty more action and suspense, and hopefully that romantic development we've all been waiting for.

This is a great second book in an engaging series. It is highly recommended for readers who love serious crime along with their suspense. Can't wait for book three.

Riveting suspense with a bit of romance

Burning Proof by Janice Cantore opens with Long Beach Detective Abby Hart and her new partner Bill Roper wrapping up a homicide case. Unfortunately an individual involved in the case is shot by Abby (not a spoiler, but you need to read the story for the details). Abby has to work through the emotions resulting from the shooting, and a major theme of the story is that process. During her time away from the police department, she re-evaluates many areas of her life, including looking at the foundation on which she has built her life. I loved following her search, seeing the truths she uncovered, and watching her use what she learned to help others. Also while on leave, she returns to her hometown where her fiancé Ethan is helping build a church. Both are Christians, but they don’t have much in common and, in my opinion, are totally wrong for each other.

Luke Murphy is a private investigator who has been invited by the FBI to join a task force investigating cold cases. While waiting for the task force to become official, he takes on a cold case involving a serial rapist and killer who seems to have disappeared. His contact person is Faye Fallon who happens to be beautiful, intelligent, and genuinely nice. Although Luke is attracted to Abby, he also knows Abby is engaged to Ethan so Luke works hard to keep the right thoughts about and attitude with Abby. When Faye indicates an interest in Luke beyond the case, Luke decides he should explore the relationship. While I sincerely appreciate Luke honoring Abby’s commitment to Ethan, I was frustrated when he agreed to go out with Faye.

Burning Proof picks up a couple of months after the end of Drawing Fire (book one), so I would highly recommend you read the stories in order if you plan to read both. Within the first 50 or so pages of the second book is a brief summary of events in book one and includes spoilers. The common thread running through both books is the cold case surrounding the death of Abby’s parents 27 years ago. Although that case is still unsolved at the end of book two, more has been uncovered than was revealed in book one. Both are fabulous books, but I do believe you could read either book without it being necessary to read the other. The prominent mystery in Burning Proof is resolved satisfactorily. I loved this story and would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys suspense with a bit of romantic undertones. This one is going on my keeper shelf.

I enjoy watching crime solving shows at television and lean toward that genre when reading books. I love the thrill of hunting along with the characters to find out what happened and who did the murder, the abduction, or the terrorist threat. Suspense and mysteries are my chosen genre. Janice Cantore newest addition to her Cold Case Justice Series Burning Proof truly shows the inner workings of the police force with reoccurring characters from the previous book.

One aspect of a book series that I have actually personally blogged about was why writers can’t allow a romance or mystery to cover more than one book. It appears Cantore is doing exactly that in her Cold Case Justice Series. Yes, there is a mystery that is solved in each individual book to intentially satisfy the readers, but there is an overall mystery that stretches over all three books. Even the romance has obstacles. Abby is engaged to a man with a heart to travel overseas to do mission work. Luke can’t stop thinking of Abby, and neither can she stop thinking about him. The romance between Luke and Abby doesn’t completely have them married by the end of this book.

True to her roots, Cantore writes with such authenticity that I never for once doubt any terms or procedure that she writes on the page. Cantore grabs my attention on the first page and fills my ultimate desire to see the inside of the police force with her novels. It is why I enjoy shows like Castle and CSI. I enjoy the method behind solving the case, even if I, personally, cannot stand science classes in school.

Cantore has created a completely original and unpredictable realistic crime novel showing the affect of shooting a person has on a police officer. Even though shooting is part of their job, Cantore allows me to understand and empathize with the struggles an officer has after shooting someone.

I really enjoyed returning to Abby and Luke as I learned more about them and watch them as they grow closer in their feelings for each other. As I already said, I enjoyed how Cantore shows how PTSD affects officers.

Creating a realistic drama sprinkled with romance, Janice Cantore’s Burning Proof is a realistic look at the world of solving cold cases, showing the grisly side of the affects on the personal officers. The story doesn’t move fast or have a lot of tension, but I didn’t feel like I had to put the book down from boredom.

A strong follow up to the first book, Drawing Fire. The action continues as Abby continues working with her new partner and Luke joins a cold case task force as well as continues his work as a PI. In my opinion, you'll want to read the first book before this one. There's some background and action that takes place in the first book that relates to and explains some of what happens in this book.

Abby's character is well developed and complex. I liked the authenticity of her character in this book as she struggles with an action she takes during an arrest that goes horribly wrong. She ends up questioning the path her life is taking and after pretty much hitting rock bottom, the only thing that saves her is her family, friends, and faith. She also thinks that she has a hit a brick wall in the investigation to her parents death and has pretty much made peace with the fact that she may never get the full truth. What will she do when Luke uncovers another clue?

Luke continues working PI cases and looks forward to joining a cold case task force. His current case takes him into some sticky situations and leads him to a stone cold killer. Meanwhile, as he teams up with Woody, a new clue surfaces about the Triple Seven murder. Woody and Luke decide to keep Abby in the dark about it until they find out if it's another dead end. In the end, will this break the trust that he had built up with Abby?

Luke and Abby are still fighting their attraction to one another. Luke knows that Abby and Ethan are still working on their relationship but he can't help feeling the attraction every time he sees her. Meanwhile, a new case brings him into contact with a beautiful blogger who also catches his attention. I must admit I'm not a fan of this at all! I'm still in the Luke and Abby camp and don't want to see the misunderstandings and hurt feelings that invariably come from this kind of "triangle". Ah well, maybe it will all be fixed in the third book! :D

All in all, a very well written, fast paced story with edge of your seat suspense and plenty of action to keep you turning pages! I'm looking forward to the conclusion of the series with book 3, Catching Heat.

Following on from Drawing Fire, which you should read first, this continues the story of Abby Hart. There's less of her personal story, though a very thought-provoking scene should cause most readers a few searching moments and the idea that justice is for *all*, not just those we *like* provides an ongoing thread, perhaps causing some doubt amongst the previously morally-certain. Forgiveness, too, is for everyone.

Again, the Christian angle is very light, more explaining Abby's distress at the choice she was forced into than anything else, but it will give those who worry about crime victims a longer-term view.

So why the average rating? Because, despite some scenes that made me wonder what I would do, say, or think, the rest of the book was lukewarm. I didn't feel any strong connection to any of the characters, or any drive to keep reading. It was an okay read, but nothing more, and I won't look for any more in the series.

"Burning Proof" is a Christian detective novel. It's the second book in a series, and it continues the story of the previous book. I'd recommend reading these books in order (starting with "Drawing Fire"). The story contained an ongoing case and a new case. These cases were the focus of the second half of the book. There were suspenseful moments as the bad guys plotted to kill our main characters.

Much of the first half of the book was about Abby dealing with a fresh trauma on top of everything else. She questions if she's really called to be a detective and why God allows bad guys to go unpunished for so long while allowing innocent people to get hurt. Once she finds her answers, she's able to help a victim in the new case who's going through a similar crisis of faith. This Christian element was worked into the natural flow of the story and wasn't "preachy."

There was no sex. The author used "he cursed" to indicate bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this thoughtful, interesting series.

This was a really good book! Now, I do want to preface this review a little bit by saying that it has been a while since I read the first book in this series, so there were a few things that slipped my mind. I did get back into the world and my thoughts got organized, but I was slightly confused in the beginning. I still really liked the characters. Abby went through a lot in this book, and I think that the author did a nice job of exploring how Abby was affected by different events in her life. I thought that her journey felt fairly realistic and relatable. I also liked the exploration into her relationship with Ethan. I'm glad that he didn't end up being painted as a good guy for the sake of the novel and the budding romance. Speaking of the romance, there wasn't really a ton of it in this novel. The two characters are kind of caught in different situations, and they both kind of suck at communicating, in my opinion. My point is that, while I sort of expected them to already be together, not much happened in this novel. I still like Luke. I think that he is a good guy, and I liked seeing how he has been interacting with more people in the world. He is kind of creating a space for himself in the world of cops, and I think that is a great direction for his character to be going in. The plot in this book was pretty good. I was intrigued by how the "new" case intertwined with the original cold case from the first novel. However, things got very twisted and confusing at times. That may have been a choice by the author to convey how confused and lost the characters are right now. Overall, I was pretty intrigued by most of the novel. I did enjoy myself while I was reading this novel, but this book did move a little slower than I wanted it to. I had just expected to fly through this novel faster than I did. The ending was solid. I liked how the author wrapped everything up while still leaving some loose ends to be explored in the final novel. There wasn't any cursing in this novel, and there wasn't any explicit sexual content. This novel did involve the investigation of two separate rapes, but the author never went into detail about what occurred. There was violence, but it wasn't anything excessive. This book may be a little too mature for younger readers, because of the rape, but it's fine for anyone who is around the YA reading age or older. I do recommend this novel. I really enjoyed it, and I think that Janice Cantore is a great author. Having said that, I did enjoy her Pacific Coast Justice Series more than I am enjoying this one. I will be continuing on to finish this trilogy, and I am excited to do so.

Another great novel in the sitting-on-the-edge-of-your-seat-thrilled series!

Abby Hart and Luke are continuing the search in the cold case concerning their relatives being murdered. Is it possible that there is a proof to the one who gave the order to kill? And what about the shocking revelation that Abby´s father might be alive?

And while investigating that, the life is not stopping at the door. And when one of the Abby´s cases turns into an ugly ordeal, she is shaken and so is her faith. Is she really cut out to be a policewoman?
There is also a cold case of kidnapping and rape - and Luke and woody have been invited to try to solve it, as the stazute of limitations is approaching fast.

And can a certain beautiful blogger make to turn Luke´s eyes off the engaged detective?

This novel is a force to be reckoned with. I love the lightning-fast speed! This one is packed with thrill - and ugliness of the evil. And I truly get why Abby gets shaken. But it is exactly the foundation on which we build our lives that can make us to live the life, even with the possibility we can never have the answers to our (sometimes cutting and painful) questions.
I also love Abby´s fieriness, her fire - and the authoress for respecting that. Abby is both strong and just, just the girl I want behind my back when it rains. And Luke and Woody, too.
Also I love the new addition into the love triangle - just when Abby starts to realize that she and her fiance might go their separate ways, Luke starts to fight his heart in giving the chance to date another woman. Fresh and interesting angle!

And I love the justice for Molly, and Molly finding her own footing. My heart goes out for her.

While the original cold case might get too illogical and B-movie-like now, I am still compelled with the series. I love the toughness and the freshness, and the heroes different from the usual trope!

The second book in the Cold Case Justice series picks right up where the first one left off with more power-packed action and suspense. Unless you are a reader who turns to the end of the book to see how things turn out before reading the rest of the book, I definitely recommend you read this series in sequence. Still struggling with the lack of complete resolution regarding the murder of her parents years earlier, Detective Abby Hart is thrown into a serious crisis that almost knocks her out of the game early in the story. I love the elements of faith and tough love that have such an impact on Abby and how she learns from her own experiences to help others. Luke and Woody have teamed up to look for missing girls and to work a few cold cases. All three of them are seeking in their own way to bring closure to families suffering from devastating losses caused by the death of loved ones or other traumatic crimes involving them or family members. Romance lies just below the surface much like real life when handsome men encounter beautiful women. I appreciate that the author keeps it all clean and above board. The big question continues to revolve around the death of Abby’s parents and Luke’s uncle. Will they ever find out who is the mastermind behind these deaths? While helping others find closure, will Abby finally get the answers she is seeking? And is she going to marry Ethan or not?

I am so intrigued by this series!! It's so different from others I've read. Firstly, the MCs are not really in mortal danger ever (i.e. kidnapping, hostage, etc). Secondly, all three books are the same storyline and characters, making for a longer story arch. It's very fun.

With partial answers to the murders of her parents, Abby Hart is trying to accept that this is a solved as the case is likely to get. But... her dad. So she's not giving up completely but she's also not doggedly going after answers and evidence.

On top of the non-answers, Abby is going through a rough patch. Does she even want to still be a homicide detective anymore? What about her future with Ethan? Her aunt helps her out of the fog of doubts and her faith becomes stronger.

I like that angle of the book that wrestles with evil and justice and God's timing verses ours. It's real and honest and relatable to so many people who have similar struggles.

I was anxiously awaiting this sequel to "Drawing Fire" and it did not disappoint. Mrs. Cantore's writing has the right amount of suspense, mystery, romance and faith all rolled into a great story that will keep you up to the wee hours and then leave you desperately wanting more when you reach the end. Abby Hart's re-thinking her "foundation" after a traumatic experience was an honest and revealing look at her faith when things go horribly wrong. Seeing her go back to her beginning and review the basics of her faith and how she was able to help a young victim in similar circumstances was fantastically written and believable without being trite. The romantic tension between Luke and Abby is a painful yet enjoyable journey and fingers crossed that they'll get their happily ever after - no matter how that looks.

I am not sure how I missed the Cold Case Justice series from Janice Cantore, but I am so glad I found them and am now 2/3 of the way through. Set again in the Long Beach area, with a homicide detective, Abby Hart, Cantore writes what she knows, and writes it well. This was a fast paced book, and drew heavily on the previous book, so you absolutely must read these in order. And for me, with as many books as I read, it's much better to read them close together, so I don't forget any of the details. Most of the same characters are back, we have a tertiary story line to figure out, but still the overarching storyline is in place, and I cannot wait for book 3 (Catching Heat), so I can get the full scoop and resolution on both the murder of Abby's parents and Luke's uncle, as well as the relationship between Abby and Luke.

Burning Proof is the second law enforcement story in the Cold Case Justice series with non-stop action and a lot of mystery. Homicide detective Abby Hart and PI Luke Murphy make great leading characters with their childhood history and different relationships which add complexity to the story. Cantore’s history as a police officer of 22 years has given her an inside understanding that has transferred to her writing an exciting and complex plotline. At the same time she has complex character development and brings scenes to life with her descriptive writing. Fantastic 5 star book!

Just when you think the mystery has been solved, another twist comes in to keep the case going. This is the continuing story of Abby and Luke trying to solve the Triple Seven murders that are very personal to each of them for different reasons.

I enjoyed this book and how the characters kept the story interesting. There were a couple of developments that I didn’t particularly like, but in writing a great story you have to have those twists to keep interest up.

There was one phrase that Abby’s Aunt Dede said that stuck with me. “Stop using today’s strength for tomorrow’s trials.” I liked that.

I’ll be starting the final book in this series and I’m looking forward to a great ending!

Stop using today’s strength for tomorrow’s trials. -Burning Proof

This is the second book in this series and I’m really into the story as a whole! There is so much going on in each of the characters lives individually and together. I’m especially glad that the author has spread the overall story out between three books because I feel like a lot would have been lost had she not and I think it’s perfect just the way it is!

I already started reading the third book and I’m about halfway through. I’ve been sick lately and can’t focus on much because of the pain and discomfort but I’ve thankfully gotten into this series and can not wait to see how it plays out!

Five stars for Jantore and Burning proof.

This store line in three parts is a must-read. Her books cover a lot of needed detail which can seen slow for about one chapter. But... From then on you can barely put the book down. Many twists in this story line will keep you reading. But you must hurray because some serious question need to be settled in her final conclusion.
Sorry gotta go. Ready to get to the finality. 😊

This is book 2 of the Cold Case Justice series. I would definitely recommend reading this trilogy of books in order to get the most from the full story. Intermixed in the ongoing cold case involving Abby’s parents and Luke’s uncle is another cold case they are hired to look into. Add in personal trauma, lots of twists and turns, and romantic tension, and I was hooked! Now on to book 3 to see how it all resolves!

I don't know if I liked it has much as the first book in this series, but it was still really good. I'm glad we got to see more of Woody and that he and Luke are now working together. But, I hate that Abby and Luke are still not together. She's finally available and he's not...Ugh! As far and their common cold case, it will be interesting to see how it all wraps up in the next book.

While the reader learns more about the series mystery, Janice treats us to other cases that are just as intriguing. The romance is slowly building, which is my style, and while not the focus, the fact that Abby and Luke have a real connection draws the reader firmly in place.

WOW!!!!!

A great beginning to another fantastic series by this author!! She is fast becoming a favorite author of mine. She grabs and keeps your attention from the get-go. And She keeps you guessing as to what's going to happen next, and that makes it hard to put the book down.

Clean Romantic Suspense

I have enjoyed reading this story and the previous one in this engrossing series. I look forward to reading more in the series about a young woman detective who is searching for the truth about the fire that killed her parents when she was a child.
